Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2009 in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd., with the Rev. Jo Roberts Mann officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Virginia Wilmeth Pauwels was born June 17, 1924, in Gruver to George Kennon Wilmeth and Gladys Sarah Wilmeth. She was the granddaughter of some of the first settlers of Hansford County and was imbued with their pioneer spirit. She pursued all areas of her life with determination, and was always proud of her Texas roots.

After her parents' divorce she, her sisters, Louise and Winifred, and mother moved to Tulia, and then later to Amarillo. She graduated from Amarillo High School.

Virginia became a telegraph operator for Western Union during World War II and lived in New York City with her good friend "Tubby" and was quite proud of her part-time position with the Arthur Murray Dance Studio.

Virginia met and married Francis Marion Thompson, a fighter pilot who died during a training exercise over the Pacific. She adopted Frank Allen Thompson, his son from a previous marriage, after his death. Virginia returned to Amarillo after his death to be near family and went to work for the Amarillo Public Library.

Virginia enrolled in courses at the Amarillo Community College, where she met and later married Edward Louis Pauwels, with whom she had two children, Steven Pauwels and Lynda Pauwels Osborn.

Children and work derailed her educational pursuits for a time, but dogged determination helped her return to college and pursue her dream to become a degreed librarian. She graduated with honors from Texas Woman's University with a B.A. in library science, and was then hired to become the head librarian for Hutchinson County. She won the John Cotton Dana award for library publicity two times during her tenure and established branch libraries in Stinnett and Fritch. It was during this time that she took her first European vacation and began a love affair with travel, contributing several articles to the local newspaper about her journey.

She resigned that position in order to seek her master's degree at the University of Kentucky. After graduation, again with honors, she became the head librarian for Foxboro, Mass. The climate there did not agree with her sunny disposition so she decided to seek a position in Carmel, Calif., as head librarian. She had lived there for a short time during her first marriage and had many fond memories of the area.

Virginia soon missed her Texas roots and returned to Amarillo in 1974. Upon her return, she was a branch librarian for Amarillo Public Libraries and was promoted to the Reference Collection Directorship. Virginia loved books and the knowledge within them, and was dedicated to expanding the reference collection for the Library System. During this time she became involved with the European Club and was later to become its newsletter editor.

Virginia retired early in order to care for her father and stepmother, Jamie Wilmeth, and their land holdings. After their death, she began to travel in earnest, always researching her destinations beforehand. She visited the United Kingdom, Spain, the Danish countries, Hong Kong, the Panama Canal, Russia, Germany, France, New Zealand, Australia and Tahiti, Canada, Mexico and Greece and traveled throughout the United States. In her retirement she pursued a "retirement career" in education getting a B.A., a real estate license and gardening hobby.

She taught us many things: To love family, pursue excellence in all that we do, integrity, and honesty. She taught us that to the "hard thing" was the most "loving thing" to do for someone you care for. She gave us the best that was within her.

Virginia was a bright and loving woman who spent many years living with the indignities of Alzheimer's disease. Even in that she taught us. We thank her for making us strong and loving individuals, to embrace our lives with all its challenges and rewards.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother; and a grandson, Keith Thompson.

Survivors include her sons, Frank Thompson and wife Jane, and Steven Pauwels and wife Kiki; a daughter, Lynda Osborn and husband Steven; and six grandchildren, Sharon Katzin, Susan Steele, Andrea Rodriguez, Adam Hendricks, Randi Ferris and McKenzie Pauwels; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
