Debbie Chisum

GRUVER - Debbie Chisum, 57, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Lieb Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Debbie was born March 19, 1952, in Borger to Veda and Reta Chisum. She attended Pringle School and later Gruver schools, where she graduated in 1970. She attended Texas Tech University, played basketball for the Lady Raiders and was trainer for the women's volleyball team. She earned a bachelor's degree in health, physical education and history. She coached in Phillips, Wellington and at Frank Phillips College until becoming disabled with a back injury.

She then spent her years helping kids through Little Dribblers youth basketball, All-Stars, AAU and basketball camps. She dedicated her life to teaching kids the basics of basketball and life also. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school. Debbie leaves many friends and several ex-players that she touched.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Janice.

Survivors include a sister, Teresa Chisum of Aledo; two nephews, Jeremy Bratcher and wife Sarah of Granbury and Jason Bratcher of Kentucky; three great-nephews, Ashton, Kaleb and Joshua Bratcher of Granbury; and two great-nieces, Emily and Shelly Klein of Granbury.

The family suggests memorials be to Kids, Inc., 2201 E. 27th Ave., Amarillo, TX 79103.

Kenneth Eugene Irwin

Kenneth Eugene Irwin, 82, of Gruver, died on Tuesday, September 8, 2009.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday in the Gruver United Methodist Church with Dr. Brad Reeves officiating. Private family burial will precede the service at the Gruver Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home in Spearman.

Kenneth was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on January 24, 1927, to Sedden Fleet Irwin and Clara Bort Irwin. He was raised in Iberia, Missouri on a small family farm and graduated from Iberia Academy in 1945. He served in the U. S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during WW II. After the war, he entered the University of Missouri and graduated in 1950 with a Finance degree. He married Janet Sutherland in Windsor, Missouri, on June 10, 1950.

Kenneth began a 60 year banking career in 1949 at the Lindell Trust Company in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1950, at the invitation of his uncle, Ralph Bort, Kenneth and Janet moved from Missouri to Gruver, Texas, where he went to work at the newly formed Gruver State Bank as an assistant cashier. In his younger days, Kenneth worked at the bank during the day and farmed for Uncle Ralph many evenings, while Janet taught music in the Gruver public schools. Kenneth graduated from the Institute for Financial Management at the Harvard Graduate School of Business in 1968. Kenneth and Janet bought controlling interest in the bank in 1982. Kenneth served as Chairman, President and CEO of the bank and GSB Bancshares, Inc. for many years. He continued to work at the bank and served as Chairman until his death.

Kenneth was active in many banking organizations and served on countless committees. He was an officer and director of the Texas Bankers Association, the Independent Bankers Association of Texas, and the North Panhandle Bankers Association. During his banking career, he was an advisor, mentor and friend to many bankers across the country who sought his advice and counsel. He also received many awards for his dedicated service to the banking profession, including the Distinguished Service Award at the Texas Tech Bankers Agricultural Credit Conference in 1987. In 2004, his friend Pat Hickman presented him with the Independent Bankers Association of Texas Chairman's Award. One of his proudest moments came in 1995, when he made a hole-in-one while playing in the IBAT convention golf tournament at the Hill Country Golf Club in San Antonio.

Kenneth was Mayor of Gruver, Texas, from 1965 to 1979. He and Janet were active members of the Gruver United Methodist Church for 59 years where he served on numerous committees. He chaired the church building committee charged with rebuilding the church after it burned in 1978.

In addition to banking, Kenneth was a farmer, rancher and cattleman. Kenneth and Janet owned a farm southwest of Gruver. In 1976, he was awarded Outstanding Conservation Farmer of the Year by the Hansford County Soil and Water Conservation District. He was a co-founder of Caprock Industries, Inc., which built two feed yards near Gruver, Texas, in 1969 and 1970. He loved his family, banking, agriculture, the Texas panhandle and its people. He was respected by his peers and was loved and admired by his family. He was one of those great men of that greatest generation.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Janet Sutherland Irwin; four children: a daughter, Debby Irwin Odom of Gruver and her children: Kenton Odom and wife, Jodi; Grant Odom; Jill Weller and husband, Ryan; and Dan Odom; a son, John S. Irwin and wife, Janie, of Amarillo and their children: Jase Irwin and wife, Lindsey; Jeff Irwin and wife, Carrie; and Mary Jane Neilson and husband, Chris; a son, Mark K. Irwin and wife, Pat of Gruver and their son Kyle Irwin and wife, Kimberly; a son, Clint J. Irwin and wife, Jody and their children: Brock Irwin and Tanner Irwin; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family wish to express their gratitude to the staff at BSA Hospice for the loving care Kenneth received from them in his last days.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Gruver EMS at P.O. Box 947, Gruver, Texas 79040, BSA Hospice at P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, Texas 79105, or a favorite charity.

Grover Taylor

GRUVER - Grover Taylor, 88, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009.

Services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 8, 2009 in First Baptist Church in Gruver with the Rev. Scott Curry officiating. Burial was in Gruver Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers of Spearman.

Grover was born Feb. 19, 1921, in Elkhart to W.F. and Ida Taylor. He was the sixth of 11 children.

He spent his early childhood in the Brownfield area, southwest of Lubbock, where the family was involved in farming. His teenage years were spent in Vinson, Okla., where he met and married Velma Nippert.

After serving in the U.S. Navy, the young couple settled in the Gruver area, where they raised two sons, Jay and Jim. After leaving the farm, Grover worked for Tillie Poston at Universal Oil Co., in Gruver, and eventually bought the business and ran it until his retirement.

Grover had many loyal customers and he was always proud of his business and loved serving his customers.

Grover was a deacon at First Baptist Church of Gruver and loved serving and witnessing for the Lord he loved.

Grover passed from this life on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, to be reunited with the love of his life, Velma, who preceded him in death in July 1975.

The family wishes to thank all the wonderful people from Gruver who have been so good about keeping watch over our loved one these past few years: Ted Harris and Glen Ward, who each stopped by almost daily to make sure he was OK; the Meals on Wheels people who provided him meals; and the nurses who provided needed care at his home. We love you all from the bottom of our hearts. Thanks also to the staff at Hansford Manor and Hansford hospital for your merciful loving care. May God bless you all.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include two sons, Jay of San Antonio and Jim and wife Lanae of Dallas; a granddaughter, Allison of Los Angeles; two grandsons, Travis of West Orange, N.J., and Chris of San Antonio; and two sisters, Sue Brownsworth of Enid, Okla., and Jewel Hays of Dayton.

Jack Wils Webster

DARROUZETT - Jack Wils Webster, 78, died Friday, Sept. 4, 2009.

Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Spetember 8, 2009 in Darrouzett High School Auditorium with the Rev. Gary McDonald, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Darrouzett Cemetery by Good Samaritan Funeral Service of Booker.

Jack was born Nov. 12, 1930, in Boulevard, Calif., to Newton and Elsie Webster. He went to school in California and Arizona before graduating from Mountain Park High School in Oklahoma.

Jack served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1952 through 1955 as a member of the Early Warning Group stationed in Hawaii and the Philippines. This was the first group of its kind in the Navy.

Mr. Webster then went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in social studies from Panhandle A&M College in May 1956 in Goodwell, Okla. Also, in the same year, Jack married Fern Hale in Amarillo.

Mr. Webster began his career in education in 1959 at Briscoe as a teacher, coach and bus driver. Jack and his family moved in 1963 to Hedley, where he added the responsibilities of being a principal to his list of duties.

Mr. Webster earned his master's degree in education in 1968 from West Texas State University and became the superintendent of Darrouzett ISD.

Jack took the job of coordinating special education programs in 1975 for Spearman, Perryton, Booker, Darrouzett, Follett and Waka school districts, a position he held until his retirement in 1990.

Jack was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Darrouzett. Over the years he was active in the community as a youth sports coach, a volunteer firefighter, Lions Club member, American Legion member and he was a member of the Senior Citizens Club.

Jack served several terms as mayor of Darrouzett and also as a member of the Darrouzett ISD school board.

Mr. Webster was preceded in death by his parents, Newton Webster and Elsie Barnhart; a sister, Mozelle Johnson; and two half brothers, Robert and George Mattox.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Fern; three daughters, Carol Barrett and husband Rusty of Hobbs, N.M., Linda Logan and husband Randy of Mesquite and Darlene Hardy and husband Hugh of Weatherford; a son, Mark Webster and wife Laurie of Amarillo; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to Gideons International, in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 341, Booker, TX 79005.

Brady Ray Pool

FAY, OK - Brady Ray Pool, 34, died Thursday, August 27, 2009, in Weatherford.

Graveside service were at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 30, 2009 in Gruver Cemetery in Gruver, Texas, with the Rev. Gary Gumfory officiating. Arrangements were by Lockstone Funeral Home of Thomas, Okla.

Brady was born to Teddy and Angie Cator Pool on May 18, 1975, in Canadian, Texas. Brady was raised in Gruver, graduating from high school in 1993. He moved to Weatherford and attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University, where he was on the rodeo team for three years. Brady attended Panhandle State University for a year. He married Brandy Preston on Aug. 20, 2005, in Thomas. They made their home in Turpin before moving in 2006 to Fay, where he worked for Dobbins Ranch.

Brady loved his wife and sons, riding horses, and roping. He enjoyed making people laugh.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Shannon.

Survivors include his wife, Brandy Pool; three sons, Spade Pool of Dodge City, Kan., and Treylon and Trew Pool, both of Fay; his parents, Teddy and Angie Pool of Guymon; a sister, Josie and husband Chris Todd of Emporia, Kan.; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Arlea and Randal Peck of Fay; a brother -in-law, Chizum Peck of Fay; two sisters-in-law, Sarah Foster of Clinton and Whitney Preston of Fay; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of friends.

The family suggests memorials be to Bank of the West in Thomas.

A. Nadine Drennan

BOISE CITY, OK - A. Nadine Drennan, 80, died Sunday, August 30, 2009.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 5, 2009 in Wheeless Cemetery in Wheeless with David Terry officiating. Arrangements are by Cimarron Mortuary.

Mrs. Drennan was born September 16, 1928, in Beaver County to the late Charlie and Hazel Fry May. She had worked as a telephone operator, at Kmart and lived as a housewife in her later years.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna Trantham of Spearman, Texas; a son, Nelson Drennan, of Fort Branch, Ind.; a sister, Rosetta Boatman of Dalhart, Texas; and four grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to VFW Women Auxillary, in care of the mortuary, P.O. Box 277, Boise City, OK 73933-0277.

Judy Thaten Walker

LUBBOCK - Judy Thaten Walker, 56, died Saturday, August 15, 2009, in Childress.

Services were at 2 p.m. Monday, August 17, 2009 in Central Christian Church in Childress with the Rev. John Givens, pastor of Community Christian Church in Lubbock, officiating and Roger Simmons assisting. Burial was in Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home of Childress.

Judy was born Nov. 14, 1952, in Childress to the late Harry and Nell Thaten. She married David Walker on Jan. 22, 1987, in Childress. They made their home at 610 N. Farm-to-Market Road 179 in Lubbock.

She loved her church very much and was an active member of Community Christian Church in Lubbock.

Survivors include her husband, David; a sister, Marsha Thaten Murphy of Spearman; two brothers, Steve Thaten of Wellington and J. Pat Thaten of Childress; four nieces; a nephew; and a host of other family and friends.

Judy's request was that memorials be to SPCA, Community Christian Church in Lubbock or CRMC Hospice.

George C. "Bud" Lowe

GRUVER - George C. "Bud" Lowe, 78, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2009.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Gruver Cemetery. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Gruver United Methodist Church with the Rev. George Price and the Rev. Brad Reeves officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home at Spearman.

George was born Oct. 11, 1930, on his parents' farm in Hansford County. He married Shirley Ann Keim on Feb. 1, 1953, in Perryton.

He was a rancher and farmer. He was a member of Gruver United Methodist Church, a 1948 graduate of Gruver High School, Wentworth Military Academy and a 1953 graduate of Texas Tech.

He was a member of Gruver Lions Club, Gruver Lodge No. 1326 A.F. and A.M., and was a Hanford County commissioner for 24 years.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Lowe; two sons, Buddy Lowe and wife Marsha and Randy Lowe, all of Gruver; a sister, Billie Jean McCutchen of Levelland; three granddaughters, Cori Cox and husband Chip of Fort Worth, Shea Lowe of Amarillo and Bryn Weller and husband Aaron of Gruver; four adopted children, Jackie Sparks and husband John of Dallas, Kim Gruver Lehr and husband Wayne of Texhoma and Lance Sparks and wife Lori and Slavin Sparks and wife Angie, all of Gruver; and three great-grandchildren, Chloe Cox and Campbell Cox, both of Fort Worth and Cooper Weller of Gruver.

The family suggests memorials be to Gruver EMS, P.O. Box 947, Gruver, TX 79040; Gruver Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 947, Gruver, TX 79040; or a favorite charity.

Don W. McLain

SPEARMAN - Don W. McLain, 78, died August 15, 2009. Graveside services will be Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 9:30 AM at Hansford Cemetery under the arrangement of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman. A Memorial Service will follow at 11:00 AM in the Spearman First Christian Church with Jim Reeves officiating.

Don was born October 10, 1930, in Spearman, Texas. He married Gwen Cator, December 29, 1949, at the Buster Cator Farm in Hansford County.

Don was a lifetime resident of Hansford County. After graduating from Spearman High School in 1948, he played football at the University of Denver for a year. He was a 1952 graduate of the University of Texas in Austin. He served as a former Director of Panhandle Bank & Trust in Borger, Texas, a founding partner of Hansford Feedyard, and a member of the First Christian Church. Some of his hobbies included: flying, ranching, and spending time with grandchildren. Don believed in working hard, being true to your word and when he said something - you knew he meant it.

Don W. McLain is survived by his wife, Gwen McLain of Spearman; son, Mike McLain and wife Diane of Gruver; daughter, Patrice Schneck and husband Gary of Borger; son, Mack McLain and wife Carrie of Gruver; daughter, Jill Patkunas and husband Mark of Highland Village; sister, Mary Brock and husband J.L. of Spearman; sister, Reva Money and husband Ron of Austin, Mona May and her husband Don of Austin TX.. He is also remembered by 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Ada McLain, and one sister, Polly McLain Harlan.

Fern Louise Jones

EUFAULA, OK - Fern Louise Jones, 67, of Eufaula, passed away Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at the Muskogee Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 7, 2009 at the Lindsey Chapel Baptist Church with Reverends Tim and Clay Turner officiating. Burial followed at Ash Creek Cemetery, under the direction of Hunn, Black and Merritt Funeral Home and Crematory.

Louise was born on October 20, 1941 in Denver, CO, to Carl Odell and Marjorie Emaline (Sparks) Turnage. She graduated from Crowder High School in 1959. On June 5, 1959, Louise married Ken Charlie Zachary in McAlester, OK. He preceded her in death on January 22, 1986. Louise worked for Tom's Delivery Service for over ten years.

On July 29, 1991, Louise married Billy John Jones. They were happily married for eighteen years. They lived in the Spearman area for several years. Louise was a member of the Holt Extension Club, and they were both active members of the First Baptist Church of Spearman and the Couples Sunday School Class.

Louise loved gospel singing and going to church. She also loved playing the piano for her church family. Louise loved spending time, eating and cooking with her family and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Billy, of the home; two sons, Rick Zachary of McAlester and Stacy Zachary and wife Kim of McAlester; two daughters, Vickie Duncan of Alderson and Sherry Young and husband Stephen of Carrolton, TX; one brother, Odell Turnage of Beggs; thirteen grandchildren; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Rosie Gulley

STINNETT - Rosie Gulley, 71, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, in Spearman.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Brown Funeral Directors Chapel in Stinnett with Marshall Ford officiating. Burial will be in Oklahoma Lane Cemetery between Bovina and Muleshoe.

Mrs. Gulley was born Mary Rosealean Redwine on March 7, 1938, to Glenn Earl and Beulah Mae Stanley Redwine in Fort Summer, N.M. She married Oral B. Gulley on Jan. 23, 1956, in Tucumcari, N.M.

Survivors include two daughters, Debra Hukill and Robin Stroud, both of Stinnett; two brothers, Kenneth Redwine of Gruver and Jimmy Redwine of Stinnett; two sisters, Wanda Redwine of Spearman and Gale "Minnie" Rutledge of Roswell, N.M.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Darrel Jean Harvey

BROWNSDALE Darrel Jean Harvey, age 73, died Tuesday morning, July 28, 2009, at his home in Brownsdale.

Darrel was born on April 11, 1936, to Clifford and Blanche (Rabine) Harvey in Brownsdale, where he grew up. On April 14, 1956, he married Janice A. Grant. As a young adult, he worked for Frank Lickteig, and Ralph Grant Construction, his father-in-law. The couple moved to Northwood, Iowa, in 1957, and Darrel worked for Alfred Swensrud. In 1963, they moved to Gruver, Texas, and he worked on a ranch for Don McLain, Fred Meyer Inc., and Attebury Grain out of Amarillo, Texas.

Darrel retired in 2000, and the couple moved to Weslaco, Texas. In 2005, they moved back to Brownsdale to enjoy family and friends.

Darrel is survived by his lovely wife, Janice Grant of Brownsdale; four children, Dena (Leonard) Dickmeyer of Valley, Neb., Rick (Sandy) Harvey of Valparaiso, Ind., Gina (Rodney) McDowell of Gruver and Todd (LaFonda) Harvey of Taylor, Texas; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; four brothers, Wayne (Marlys) Harvey of Blooming Prairie, Delmar (Shirley) Harvey of Ocala, Fla., Fred (Helen) Harvey of Taopi and Dick (Carol) Harvey of Shepherdsville, Ky.; two sisters, Lois Oleson of Kensett, Iowa, and Linda (Ken) Thomas of Byron; mother-in-law, Eldora Grant of Brownsdale; two sisters-in-law, Mavis Harvey of Blooming Prairie and Nancy Grant of Renville, Minn.; three brothers-in-law, Jim Grant of Renville, Den Grant of Chaska, Minn., and Wes Grant of Holmen, Wis. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Kenneth and Raymond Harvey; one sister, Mary Jane Harvey; father-in-law, Ralph Grant; two sisters-in-law, Sandra and Debra Kay Grant; and one brother-in-law, Fred Oleson.

Family and friends will gather for a memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at the residence of Eldora Grant, 311 North Mill St. in Brownsdale, with the Rev. Jeffrey Sage officiating. Lunch will follow the service.
