Jack Hefley

WHEELER - Jack Hefley, 78, died Wednesday, February 11, 2009.

Services were at 2 p.m. Friday, February 13, 2009 in Church of Christ with Dr. Shawn Johnson, minister, officiating. Burial was in Mobeetie Cemetery in Mobeetie by Wright Funeral Home.

Jack Hefley was born Sept. 27, 1930, in Gageby to Farmer and Opal Hefley. He attended school in Briscoe and Mobeetie and graduated from Mobeetie High School in 1950. Jack married Bernice Carter on Aug. 12, 1950. He served his country in the U.S. Army in 1954, stationed in El Paso and Germany. Jack and Bernice lived in Gruver and Wheeler before moving to Mobeetie in 1968. Jack owned a feed mill and the first feedlot in Wheeler County, and farmed and ranched until his retirement in 1992.

Jack was a member of Church of Christ in Wheeler, and he also served as a member of the Mobeetie school board for nine years. Jack received the first Pioneer Farmer and Rancher award of Wheeler County in 2008.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Farmer and Opal Hefley.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Hefley of Mobeetie; a son, Mark Hefley and wife Darla of Elk City, Okla.; a daughter, Melissa Rodgers and husband Timm of Miami; a brother, Richard Hefley and wife Dorothy of Brownwood; grandchildren, Tiffany and Bryan Johnson of Lubbock, Michael and Courtney Hall of Camp Lejeune, N.C., Justin and Brittney of Elk City, Dustin Hampton of Wheeler, Tamara and Chris Gallagher of Amarillo, Heather Hampton of Lubbock, Vanessa Trent and Randie Zims of Clinton, Okla., Jonathan Cornelsen of Weatherford, Okla., and Gabriel, Nikki and Allison Rodgers of Canadian; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

The family suggests memorials be to Mobeetie Cemetery, in care of First State Bank of Mobeetie, P.O. Box 8, Mobeetie, TX 79061; or Star Chapter, Alzheimer's Association, 415 West Eighth Ave., Amarillo, TX 79101-2215.

Dudley Hargrove

PERRYTON - Dudley Hargrove, 82, died Thursday, February 12, 2009.

Rosary was said at 7 p.m. Sunday, February 15, 2009 in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home. Services were at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 16, 2009 in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Monsignor Rex Nicholl officiating. Burial was in Ochiltree Cemetery.

Mr. Hargrove was born Dec. 23, 1926, in Farnsworth and was a lifetime Perryton resident. He married Rita Annn Hurter on Nov. 27, 1948, in Huntoon. She preceded him in death in 2003.

Mr. Hargrove was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II and the Korean conflict. He was a contract pumper and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Perryton.

Survivors include two sons, Mike Hargrove and wife Sharon of Richfield, Ohio, and Dennis Hargrove and wife Reiko of Perryton; two daughters, Cynthia Powell and husband Jim of Perryton and Paula Williams and husband Ty of Gruver; a brother, Lanny Hargrove and wife Nina Beth of Amarillo; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be "in memory of Dudley Hargrove," Perryton ISD Athletic Booster Club, P.O. Box 173, Perryton, TX 79070.

Reece William "Rusty" Taylor

PERRYTON - Reece William "Rusty" Taylor, 78, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Harvest Time First Assembly of God with the Rev. Scott Barton, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Ochiltree Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Perryton.

Rusty was born Aug. 13, 1930, in Perryton to Reece E. and Florence S. Taylor. He married Lois Reynolds on Dec. 29, 1948, in Spearman. He was a farmer and a rancher.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lois Taylor, in 2005; a sister, Laura Atchison; and two grandchildren, Donny White and Bradley Hensley.

Survivors include three daughters, Vicki T. Carpenter of Dallas, Sheri L. Kee of Perryton and Florence Hensley of Texhoma; two sons, William R. Taylor of Amarillo and Curtis R. Taylor of Perryton; two brothers, John Taylor and Gary Taylor, both of Perryton; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to Harvest Time First Assembly of God, P.O. Box 1243, Perryton, TX 79070; or Hospice Home Health, 3101 Garrett Drive, Perryton, TX 79070.

Howard Dean Kelly

AUSTIN - Howard Dean Kelly, 83, left this earth to be with his Heavenly Father on February 11, 2009.

Services were at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 14, 2009 in Cook-Walden Funeral Home Colonial Chapel with Dr. Bruce M. Murry and Dr. Jay Miller officiating. Burial was in Cook-Walden Memorial Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Kelly was born Dec. 27, 1925, in Spearman to Oran and Elmo Kelly.

Howard served his country in the Army Air Corps in the 40's. He was a graduate of Texas A&M University, class of 1950. He had a long career as a professional civil engineer. He was a deacon at River Road Baptist Church. He particularly loved church functions, high-school sports, and college football. He had a great sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. He was a good friend and was loved by many, and he will be missed by all.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy; son, Dennis and wife, Kathy; son, Timothy; daughter, Kathleen and husband Darrell Vrla. He leaves behind eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He is survived by one sister, Colleen and husband Grady Yeary, and many nieces and nephews.

William "Bill" Robinson

PAMPA - William "Bill" Robinson, 66, formerly of Amarillo, died Sunday, February 1, 2009.

Memorial graveside services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2009 in Lieb Cemetery in Morse by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.

Mr. Robinson was a plumber in Amarillo for more than 20 years, moving to Pampa in 1984. He was a plumber for several years and a pipe fitter for Phillips Petroleum for eight years.

Survivors include four sons, Charles Robinson, Jack Robinson, Allan Robinson and Gary Robinson, all of Pampa; three sisters, Dorothy Manning of Marietta, Okla., Elizabeth Farmer of Amarillo and Carol Davis of Lancaster, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to Alcoholics Anonymous Open Door Group, 910 W. Kentucky St., Pampa, TX 79065.

S.C. "Bant" Storrs

S.C. "Bant" Storrs, 90, of Amarillo died Wednesday, February 4, 2009.

Graveside services was be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Coulter Chapel, 8310 S. Coulter St.

Bant was born February 18, 1918, in Spearman to Ralph and Ethel Storrs. He married Roxie Storrs and lived in Amarillo most of his life. He worked for Plains Creamery for more than 35 years. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren, and was always there for his kids' and grandkids' sports. Bant enjoyed playing pool, fishing, horse racing and golf.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Roxie, in 1996.

Survivors include three sons, Gary Don Storrs and wife Judy, Wayne Storrs and wife Karla and Gene Storrs, all of Amarillo; five grandchildren, David Storrs and wife Alison, Holly Smith and husband Rusty, Sara Koen and husband Justin, Shane Storrs and wife Angel and Lincoln Storrs; and seven great-grandchildren, Troy, Garrett, Cody, Sam, Ethan, Willa and Triston.

Mattie Lucille Sorrels

BEAVER, Okla. - Mattie Lucille Sorrels, 78, died Wednesday, February 4, 2009.

Services were at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 6, 2009 in First Baptist Church with Dr. Don Hammer, Johnny Dean Merrell and Jeff Bradley officiating. Burial was at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Holliday Cemetery in Holliday, Texas, by Clark Funeral Service of Beaver.

Mrs. Sorrels was born August 31, 1930, in Graham to Clarence Eugene and Annie Mae Suttle Hammer. She married Dean Sorrels on December 5, 1947, in Gainesville, Texas.

Survivors include her husband; four daughters, Kay Sorrels and Sandi Flickinger, both of McPherson, Kan., Deanie Merrell of Norman and Terri Hansen of Spearman, Texas; a brother, Dr. Don Hammer of Sun City West, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Dr. Robert L. 'Bob' Cator, Jr.

Dr. Robert L. 'Bob' Cator, Jr. DVM, 69, died at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen on Friday, February 6, 2009. He was a veterinarian at his clinic at the Petsmart on McColl and Expressway 83 frontage road. He was born in Sunray, Texas and he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Texas A&M University in 1966 and has been practicing ever since.

How do you write about the death of the most honorable man you have ever met? For Robert Lee Cator, Jr., (mostly known as 'Bob') the most important thing he did in his life was the way he loved his family. He absolutely did everything for them. He was a man that you wanted to always be with; he made your life better by just being by your side. Words cannot describe this man who treated everyone with respect.

The family would like everyone to 'Maroon out' which is come to the service dressed in maroon to honor Bob and his love for Texas A&M. Bob is survived by his loving wife, Glee of Mission; his three sons: Kody (Serena) Cator of Pharr; Clint(Kristin) Cator of Mission; Kale Cator and daughter, Krystle Cator, both of Mission.

The visitation was from 12-6 PM on Monday, February 9, 2009 at Kreidler Funeral Home on N.10th with the family there to receive friends from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.. A funeral service was conducted at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at the funeral home. Burial followed at College Station, Texas at a later date.

Evelyn I. Burch

SPEARMAN - Evelyn I. Burch, 78, died Sunday, February 8, 2009.

Memorial services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Christian Church of Spearman with John Scott officiating. Arrangements were by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home in Spearman.

Evelyn was born February 3, 1931, in Angola, Ind., to Howard and Mildred Wagoner. She married Leon Burch on January 5, 1957.

Evelyn attended Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., to earn her LVN degree and was a former nurse for Hansford County Hospital District for 30 years. She was very generous and caring, and touched many lives.

Evelyn enjoyed reading, needlepoint, crosswords, watching sports and spending time with her family.

She loved watching her grandchildren grow up, but her true love was her great-grandchildren who knew her as "Ge-Ge."

She will never be far from our thoughts and will be in our hearts forever.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leon Burch; and a grandchild, Troy Allen Hughes.

Survivors include two daughters, Jan Ellsworth and Gary Ellsworth of Spearman and Jo Lynn Griffin and husband J.L. of Sheridan, Wyo.; two sons, James Burch and Bereice Schmidt of Spearman and Kelly Burch and wife Margarita of Happy; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Brenda Sanders and husband Dick and Gretchen Baker and husband Bob, all of Indiana; a brother, James Wagoner of California; numerous nieces and nephews; and good friends, Idella Randall and Caro Lee Frantz.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Hansford Hospice, 707 S. Roland St., Spearman, TX 79081.

Helen Irene Edwards

SPEARMAN - Helen Irene Edwards, 91, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2009.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in First Christian Church in Gruver with the Rev. Gary Gumfory officiating. Burial will be in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Helen Irene Edwards was born Dec. 12, 1917, in Texas County, Okla., to Henry and Bea Roper. She graduated from Gruver High School in 1937. She married Jess Edwards in 1949 in Cedar Vale, Kan. She was a homemaker.

The family expresses deep appreciation to the all the staff and residents of Hansford Manor in Spearman for their continuous love, care and affection.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jess Edwards, in 1992; her parents, Henry and Bea Roper; two brothers, Harland Roper and Emory Dee Roper; a sister Harlene Judkins; and a special niece, Rae Karr.

Survivors include two sons, Henry Lee "Hank" Stewart and wife Linda of Burleson and Jack Johnson and wife Julie of Pittsburg, Kan.; a stepdaughter, June Weant of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Flo Barnett of Amarillo; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation with family and friends will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church in Gruver.

Gerald Evans
KILLEEN - Gerald Evans, 58, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Calvary Baptist Church in Killeen with the Rev. Travis Sullivan, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home of Killeen.
Gerald was born Feb. 13, 1950, in Muleshoe to Joe and Nina Evans. He graduated from Gruver High School.
He married Frances Walker on April 20, 1974, in Spearman. He was a longtime cowboy and bull-hauler.
He loved the Lord and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He will be dearly missed as a husband, dad, granddad and friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Don Evans, Bill Evans and Gene Evans; and a sister, Mildred Schreur.
Survivors include his wife of 34 years; three children, Lynette Blum and husband Glenn of Nolanville, Chris Evans and wife Dana of Amarillo and Kelly Moyer of Killeen; seven grandchildren, Trey, Nick, Bailey, Justin, MaKayla, Trevor and Trent; a brother, Jerry Evans of Spearman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorials be to Calvary Baptist Church, 13341 State Highway 195, Killeen, TX 76542-4846.

Larry Porter

CANYON - Larry Porter, 73, died on January 28, 2009 in Canyon, TX.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at Dreamland Cemetery. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, January 31 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. David L. Lowrie, Jr., pastor, and Doug Moore, officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 30 at Brooks Chapel. Burial will be a Dreamland Cemetery under the direction of Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon, TX.
Larry Porter was born September 3, 1935 to Ervin and Leola House Porter in Canyon. Larry's career included 10 years of farming with his father-in-law, Ray Moore at Spearman, Texas. He was a claims adjuster for 15 years and office manager for 15 years in Amarillo and Ft. Worth, Texas. Larry was a member of the First Baptist Church of Canyon.
Survivors include his wife, Gayle Porter of Canyon; a daughter, Pamela Kay Porter of Amarillo; a son, Curt Porter and wife Teresa of Amarillo; and two grandchildren, Ashley and Kaylee Porter of Amarillo.

Leona "Daut" Harp
Leona "Daut" Harp, 90, of Amarillo died Tuesday, January 13, 2009.
Services were at 11 a.m. Friday, January 16, 2009 in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Martin Road Chapel, 1505 Martin Road, with Dale Moreland and Roger Smith of The Church at Quail Creek officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Leona "Daut" Harp was born Octtober 11, 1918, in Post to Rob and Ethel Stiles. She married John Harp on August 27, 1938, in Guymon, Okla. Nine years later, their son Johnny Bob was born. They worked on several area ranches during the early years of their marriage. She was a really good cowgirl. She wasn't afraid to get on any horse and did get bucked off a few times. She and her husband, John, moved in later years into Amarillo, where they made their home. Leona was a longtime member of San Jacinto Baptist Church and taught Sunday school to all ages. In recent years, she moved her membership to Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Johnny Bob and wife Miriam of Charleston, S.C.; two sisters, Elnora Gillaspie of Amarillo and Emma Gene Braden of Pahrump, Nev.; a grandson, Kevin Harp of Charleston; three nephews, Billy Don Gillaspie of Amarillo, Dick Gillaspie and wife Leann and their children, Laura, Mindee, Caleb and Collin of Spearman and Dr. Robert Braden of Las Vegas; three nieces, Betty Navarro and husband Rudy of Merritt Island, Fla., Cula Jo Trout and husband Bob of Clarendon and Billie Mae Lowrey and husband Buddy of Pampa; and a host of friends.

Leona 'Fern' Porter
SPEARMAN - Leona Fern Porter, 61, died Friday, January 16, 2009.
Memorial services weree at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2009 in Church of Christ with Larry McCollum officiating. Arrangements were by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.
Mrs. Porter was born December 5, 1947, in Ralston, Okla. She married Bill Porter on April 24, 1965, in Clovis, N.M. She was employed by Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Co. and DCP for 33 years.
She was a member of Spearman Church of Christ.
Survivors include her husband, Bill Porter; a son, Trey Porter of Amarillo; her father, John F. Wagner of Kingfisher, Okla.; six brothers, Gary Wagner and Clarence Wagner, both of Wheeler, Kenneth Wagner and Richard Wagner, both of Watonga, Okla., John Wagner of El Reno, Okla., and Bob Wagner of Bermuda; and three grandchildren.

Austin B. "Cap" Benson

AMARILLO - Austin B. "Cap" Benson, 91, of Amarillo died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008.

Memorial services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 10, 2008 in Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel, 2800 S. Osage St., with Jim Fox, chaplain of Vista Care Hospice, officiating. Burial was Dec. 27 in Gruver Cemetery in Gruver.

Cap was born in Hill County and graduated from Phillips High School. After high school, he worked as a welder in the shipyards of New Orleans during World War II. After the war, Cap moved back to Phillips, where he started a long career at Phillips Petroleum. During his career at Phillips, he worked in several towns in the Texas Panhandle. He retired after more than 40 years of dedicated service.

Cap moved to Amarillo in 1998 from Gruver. He was a member of the Gruver Masonic Lodge and First Christian Church in Gruver. He loved music and playing the guitar. Cap also loved attending dances at Amarillo Senior Citizens. Cap coached baseball teams for many years, where he touched the lives of many young men.

Cap married Bonnie Cook in 1940 in Borger. She passed away in 2001.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Mary Carrasco and the staff of MC's Private Care as well as Steve Kirkpatrick and the staff of Interim Healthcare and the Vista Care Hospice doctors and staff.

He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Stedje, in 1997; a son-in-law, Dennis Stedje, in 2001; and two great-grandchildren, Hayden Steinberger in 2002 and Gunner Stedje in 2008.

Survivors include a daughter, Cindy Holton and husband Jerry of Spearman; a son, Bob Benson and wife Gabriele of Lyons, Colo.; six grandchildren, Brett Benson, Shana Benson, Shelley Singleton, Shannon Steinberger, Jason Holton and Scott Stedje; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to MC's Private Care, 4807 S. Rusk St., Amarillo, TX 79110.
