Tom Tyler

PANHANDLE - Tom Tyler, 73, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church in Panhandle with the Rev. Joe Zimmerman, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Panhandle Cemetery by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors.

Tom, born Nov. 18, 1934, in Quanah, was a farmer and rancher and worked for Dauer Herefords. He had been a resident of Panhandle since 1955, and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Tom loved cowboying, helping people, being a mechanic and spending time with his family, and he also loved to talk. He married Phyllis Dickey July 12, 1974, in Panhandle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Lee and Dulce Tyler.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Ann Tyler; a son, Taff Wayne Tyler and wife Stephanie of Gruver; two daughters, Darla Jo Paquette and husband Dennis and Donna Sue Hatfield and husband Roger, all of Claude; a sister, Mary Lee Gabriele of Raton, N.M.; six grandchildren, Angela Mae Paquette, Dustin Alan Chambliss, Roger Shawn Hatfield, Russell Wayne Hatfield, Alexes "Ali" Marie Tyler and Tate Wayne Tyler; and eight great-grandchildren.

Willie Clement

SPEARMAN - Willie Clement, 85, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2008.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Medley and Brent Womble officiating. Private burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Mrs. Clement was born Oct. 1, 1922, in Pampa to William and Hattie Mackie. She married Deacon Clement on Feb. 7, 1945.

Survivors include two sons, Dave Clement of Perryton and Joe Clement of Spearman; a brother, Glen Mackie of Spearman; three sisters, Geneva Ogle of Borger and Joan Roberts and Elsie Womble, both of Norman, Okla.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity.

Joslyn Olivia Beck

Joslyn Olivia Beck, 1, died on Thursday, September 18, 2008 in Amarillo.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 22, 2008 in the Trinity Fellowship Church North Auditorium with Pastor El Cantu officiating. Burial was held at the Hansford Cemetery in Spearman. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.

Joslyn was born June 28, 2007 in Amarillo. She was a bright light in our lives. Her short life impacted so many people. She filled the room with love and peace. She was a beautiful child with big brown eyes, and had a spunky, fighting spirit. The family would like to thank the Pediatric ICU team from NWTH for their compassion and care of Joslyn.

She is survived by her parents Barry & Kelli Beck; her siblings, Krissy Frost, Hailey Thompson, Victoria Wallace, Abby Helton, Zakary Beck, Travis Thompson, all of Amarillo; and her grandparents, Larry and DeAnne White of Amarillo, and Verlin and Audene Beck of Spearman.

The family asks that memorials be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 1501 Streit Drive, Amarillo, Texas 79106.

Georgia I. McLeod

Georgia I. McLeod, 88, died on Friday, September 19, 2008.

Funeral services were held on Monday, September 22, 2008 at 10 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Neely Landrum officiating. Interment was in Hansford Cemetery under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Georgia was born in Pampa, TX on January 12, 1920 to B.J. and Ada Lomax.

Georgia married Rock McLeod in 1941 in Spearman and raised six children. She ran Cattleman's Cafe and many others through the years.

Georgia, or Granny, as most knew her, lived life to the fullest. She served more eggs in Hansford County than chicken can lay. When she was in the cafe window, her favorite saying was 'If you can't haul 'em, don't call 'em.

She was quick to laugh, loved to shop, and a shark at WAHOO - sometimes even counting a few extra dots on the dice in her favor. She was crowned Ms. Heritage Days and served Spearman proud as the parade Grand Marshall.

Granny will live on in a legacy of her grand, great and great-great grandchildren who will always have 'granny' stories to tell forever and make all who hear them laugh and laugh. Her humor, spunk and love of family will never be forgotten.

She was preceded in death by her parents, B.J. and Ada Lomax; her husband, Rock McLeod in 1963; and a daughter, Reba Kay Hamilton.

She is survived by four daughters, Roxie Evans of Spearman, Rita Faye Underwood of Spearman, Reva Jean Hand of Spearman, Edna Sue Holloway of Justin, TX; one son, Jimmy Glenn McLeod of Spearman; two sisters, Bety Davis of Granbury, TX and Wanda Terrell of Abilene, TX; 16 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

The family requests memorials be to Hansford Hospice, 707 S. Roland, Spearman TX 79081 or Hansford Cemetery Association, 707 E. 2nd, Spearman TX 79081.

Smokey Mayfield

SPEARMAN - Smokey Mayfield, 84, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Church of Christ with Windell Taylor, Pete Curtis and Larry McOllum officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.
Smokey was born June 20, 1924, in Dawn to W.F. and Penelope Mayfield and died at home surrounded by family. He moved to Dimmitt in 1931 and attended school there. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II, participating in the Battle of the Bulge.
In 1951, he married Mary K. Keenum in Cleburne. He came from a strong musical background, where all his family played musical instruments. Smokey and brothers Ed and Herb traveled all around playing bluegrass music and opening for Tennessee Ernie Ford, Maddox Brothers and Rose and many other outstanding bluegrass bands. Eventually Ed dropped out of the family band and signed on with Bill Monroe for 10 years. Smokey and Herb continued to play for area bluegrass festivals.
Smokey devoted 51 years of his life to Turkey Track Ranch as a ranch supervisor. He proved himself to be the best cowboy they ever had. Smokey and Herb were honored by South Plains College in Levelland as being Pioneers of Bluegrass Music in the South Plains. They were presented plaques and as a special honor they received belt buckles recognizing them as Honorary Bill Monroe Bluegrass Boys.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Mayfield; two sons, James Clinton and wife Eileen of Amarillo and Freddie Calvin and wife Janice of Spearman; three daughters, Cynthia Arlece and husband Ted of Stinnett, Loretta Diane and husband Roy of Chickaloon, Alaska, and Harriett Palmer and husband Charlie of Pleasanton; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jim Mayfield of Playas, N.M.
The family suggests memorials be to Mayfield Bluegrass Scholarship, South Plains College, 1401 S. College Ave., Levelland, TX 79336.

Martha Ann Mans

SPEARMAN - Martha Ann Mans, 75, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008.

Services were at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, 2008 in Union Church with Mark Murray officiating. Arrangements were by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Mrs. Mans was born Aug. 12, 1933, in San Pedro, Calif., to Bert and Mildred Ottinger. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Tony Mans of Gruver; a daughter, Melissa Mans of Sydney; a brother, Marshall Ottinger of El Dorado, KS; and two grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to Hansford Hospice, 707 S. Roland St., Spearman, TX 79081.

Mae Hargis

HENRIETTA, TX- Mae Hargis, 73, passed away Thursday, September 4, 2008 in Spearman, TX.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 6, 2008, at Davis Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mark Little, pastor of the Grandview Assembly of God Church in Elk City, OK officiating. Burial followed at Hope Cemetery in Henrietta under the direction of the Davis Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hargis was born February 12, 1935 in Jay, OK to Clayburn F. and Alice (Harrington) Kirby. She married James Hargis on October 14, 1954 in Clayton, NM. She was a homemaker and a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She was a loving mother, devoted granny and loved garage and estate sales.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James August 25, 2000 and her sister June Tucker June 6, 2008.

Survivors include one daughter, Charla Harrison and husband Larry of Fairfield, CA; three sons, Randy Hargis and wife Michele of Elk City, OK, Kent Hargis and wife Robin of Morse, TX and Kirby Hargis and wife Jane of Katy, TX; one sister, Frances Dorn of Las Vegas, NV; four brothers, Frank Kirby of Chicago, IL, Don Kirby of Drumwright, OK, Lonnie Kirby of Ironton, MO and Mark Kirby of Enid, OK; ten grandchildren: Christa, Clint, Kacee, Callie, Connor, Brady, Bryce, Dean, Mary Beth and Stephen; and three great-grandchildren: Halee, Addison and Cadence.

Zephry (Z.Q.) Quay Bingham

Zephry (Z.Q.) Quay Bingham, of Plattsburg, Missouri, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, September 7, 2008 at the age of 73. Graveside services will be held at Old Hansford Cemetery, Spearman, Texas on Thursday, September 11, 2008 at 10:00 am. Mr. Bingham was a graduate of Silverton Texas High School and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Upon completion of his service he returned to the Texas Panhandle and began a law enforcement career that would span the next thirty years. During those years he served as a Police Officer, Police Sergeant, Deputy Sheriff, Chief of Police and Chief Deputy Sheriff in several communities including Herford, Tulia, Spearman, Sunray and Dumas. He is survived by his sister, Merriman Sims, Blue Springs, Missouri, brother Frank Bingham, Kansas City, Missouri, daughter, Rhoda Trussell, Burleson, Texas, son Chief Zephry M. Bingham, Plattsburg, Missouri and five grandchildren.

William Don Hudson

William Don Hudson, 93, of Gruver died Sunday, September 7, 2008.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 11, at the Gruver First Christian Church with the Rev. Gary Gumfory officiating. Burial will be in the Gruver Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home.

Don Hudson was born October 21, 1914, in Sarcoxie, Missouri, to Edward and Hattie Turk Hudson. When he was 14 he moved to Gruver where his father was the townsite manager. He graduated from Gruver High School in 1932.

Mr. Hudson served in the Army from July 1941 until February 1946. While in Germany he was in the famed Hell on Wheels 2nd Armored Division. After returning to Gruver, he resumed his work as operator of the Phillips 66 station and began farming with his brother Turk. Later he became a full time farmer and rancher.

On May 8, 1948, he married Dorothy Hart. They recently celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary with their four daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mr. Hudson was known for his wit and story telling ability. He served as mayor of Gruver from 1959 to 1965 and on the boards of the Hansford County Hospital and Gruver Cemetery Association. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Gruver.

Mr. Hudson was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Max, Turk, and Lee.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; four daughters: Dr. Jackie Hudson of Chico, California, Nancy Hudson Sambaiew and husband Vlad of Muscatine, Iowa, Judy Hudson Buchanan and husband Glen of Perry, Oklahoma, Jean Hudson Harris and husband Kenneth of Gruver; 13 grandchildren: Ben Harris and wife Tandalee, Caleb, Micah, Amy, Daniel, Anna, and Angela Harris, Clay Buchanan and wife Jaretta, Cara Buchanan MacDonald and husband Errol, Cassie, and Carly Buchanan, Eric Sambaiew and Peter Sambaiew and wife Kim; 3 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mr. Hudson is also survived by his sister-in-law Mary Hudson of Sarcoxie, Missouri, and brothers-in-law Jack Hart and wife Bobbie of Amarillo, and Don Hart and wife Donna of Sierra Vista, Arizona.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to the Hansford Hospice, 707 S. Roland St., Spearman, Texas 79081 or the Gruver Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 947, Gruver, Texas 79040.

Tang Qian Jun

SPEARMAN - Tang Qian Jun, 48, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Christian Church with the Rev. Beverly Cook officiating. Burial will be in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Mr. Jun was born in Guangzhou, China, and married Hui Zhu Pang in 1985 in China. He owned and operated Tang's Chinese Restaurant for seven years.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Si Li Tang of Spearman; a son, Jerry Tang of Spearman; two brothers, Tang Siu Ming of China and Jun Tang of Oklahoma; and a sister, Jin Ping of China.

Ilma Beryldine Broaddus Lynn – June 8, 2011

Ilma Beryldine Broaddus Lynn, 94, formerly of Amarillo and lately of Houston has met her savior Jesus Christ face to face and has heard Him say, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” Like the homecoming scene in the movie “Antwone Fisher,” friends and relatives gone before have greeted her with cheers, shouts of joy and outstretched hands as she walked into the Heavenly Realms. She no doubt replied with delight, “So good to see you.” She made this journey on Wednesday, June 8, 2011.

Beryldine will be buried in a private service at Llano Cemetery in Amarillo on June 13, 2011. Afterwards, there will be a memorial service at 11:00 A.M. at First Christian Church of Amarillo with Dr. John Bridwell, minister emeritus, officiating. The family will receive visitors afterwards in the parlor of the Church. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Beryldine was born on January 15, 1917 in Mexico, Missouri. She lived there with her parents and two siblings until about age three when the family moved to the Amarillo area. She grew up either in Amarillo or on family farms in the area and graduated from Amarillo High School in 1935. She married and continued to live in Amarillo until she moved to Houston in 1994 to be near her daughter, Cindy, and son in law and two grandchildren. Beryldine was the Senior Minister’s secretary at First Christian Church for over thirty years, where she performed outstanding service for several ministers including Dr. Newton J. Robinson and Dr. John Bridwell. Upon moving to Houston in her late 70’s, she continued to work by helping Cindy with her photography business until 2005. She never retired from wanting to help others. She was a humble and selfless servant that liked to make life easier for others.

Beryldine was the daughter of Mabel Faye Davis Broaddus and Thomas Martin Broaddus. Her siblings were Glenn Davis Broaddus and Evelyn Louise Broaddus Sheldon. She married Thomas Jackson Lynn on Easter Sunday, April 13, 1941 at 8:00 a.m. at First Christian Church in Amarillo. Their only child, Cynthia Ann Lynn, was born in 1949 and Tom and Beryldine were happily married until Tom’s death in 1988.

Survivors include her daughter, Cynthia Ann Lynn Crofford, and husband, Gary Lynn Crofford, of Houston; grandson, Curtis Lynn Crofford, and wife, Margaret Elaine Bandy Crofford, of Dallas; granddaughter, Kristen Lynn Crofford McGee, and husband, Samuel Sean McGee, of Dallas and four great grandchildren. Her great grandchildren are, in order of age: Jackson Bailey Crofford (7), Sarah Margaret Crofford (5), Isabella Rose McGee (almost 24 months) and Leah Elizabeth Crofford (almost 20 months). When shown a picture of one of her great grandchildren very recently, she said, “It is one of OUR little ones.” She loved her family.

The family requests that memorials in Beryldine’s honor be made to First Christian Church of Amarillo for their endowment fund or to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Margie E. “Haws” Kinsey – June 9, 2011

Margie E. “Haws” Kinsey, 75, of Carthage passed away at 6:15 a.m. Thursday June 9, 2011.

Graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday in Memorial Park Cemetery at Vega. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers at Vega, 110 S. Main St., Vega, Texas.

Margie was born April 9, 1936 in Friona, Texas. She had lived in Carthage since 1999, moving from Glenwood, Arkansas. Margie was the daughter of Leonard Haws and Helen “Cogdill” Haws. Margie graduated from Friona, Texas in 1954 and West Texas State University Bachelors of Science Degree in 1958. She went to college on a basketball scholarship playing at Wayland Baptist College for 2 years. She then attended Eastern New Mexico University and the University of Colorado to work on her Masters Degree. She also taught school and coached for 11 years. Margie trained and raced horses from 1959 to 1985. She was employed at Precious Moments Hotel for the past 10 years.

Margie was united in marriage to Ronald Gene Kinsey on August 8, 1963 in Raton, New Mexico. He preceded her in death on April 12, 1998.

Margie is survived by several nieces and nephews, brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws and one aunt. She is preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Walter Haws.

Contributions may be made to the Joplin Relief Fund in care of the Ulmer Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Juanita “Nita” Riner-June 8, 2011

Juanita “Nita” Riner, 95, of Amarillo died on Wednesday, June 8, 2011.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at Llano Cemetery with Jeff Collins officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Juanita Riner known as Nita by her friends and Nonie by her family was born December 27, 1915 in Sherman, Texas. She graduated from Amarillo High School. She married Woodrow Wilson Riner in 1934. She has been a member of First Baptist Church for many years. Nita was the first woman realtor for Hugo Loewenstern Realtors and later worked as a sales clerk at Dunlaps until 1999.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Woody Riner, her son, Dub Riner, two of her daughters, Phyllis Faughnan and Brenda Scheffel and a grandson, Mark Bertovich.

Survivors include her daughter, Sally Stephens of Lubbock; two granddaughters, Leslie Worley and husband Jim of Midland and Darcy Collins and husband Jeff of Lubbock; four grandsons, Robert Faughnan of Amarillo, Mike Bertovich of San Antonio, PJ Scheffel of Dallas and Willie Riner of Amarillo; five great grandsons, Jesse and Benji Worley of Midland and Christian, Beau and Colby Collins of Lubbock. She is also survived by her special friends, Gaines Brown and Pat Lawson.

The family suggests memorials be made to BSA Hospice, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79105.

Jewell Elizabeth Vessels-June 7, 2011

Jewell Elizabeth Vessels, 88, of Amarillo died on Tuesday, June 7, 2011.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 10, 2011 at the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd. with Dean Whaley, Minister at Bell Avenue Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Mrs. Vessels was born on June 24, 1922 in Crowell, Texas to Jim and Rosa Lee Gray. She was raised in Crowell and was a longtime resident of Amarillo. Mrs. Vessels retired from Maywood after twenty years and also sold Avon. She loved her family, sewing, crafts, cooking and teaching Sunday school at her church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Loyd L. “Jack” Vessels in 1987, a son, Red Vessels and two daughters, Tara Billington and Patricia Richardson.

Survivors include a son, Gayland “Rusty” Vessels and a daughter, Karen Ratliff, both of Amarillo; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
