Phyllis A. Askew – September 14, 2011

Phyllis Althea Askew was a remarkable woman, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who passed away just a week before her 94th birthday. She will long be remembered for her loving and adventurous spirit. She possessed an engaging persona and a positive, strong attitude which touched many lives.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 17, 2011, at the First Christian Church with Rev. Barry Loving officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Phyllis was born in Peoria, Illinois to Willis and Nellie Johnson. In 1945 she came to Amarillo with her husband, William Burke Cline who passed away unexpectedly. In 1950 she married Middleton L. Askew with whom she shared many wonderful years raising her daughters and enjoying their friends and relatives. Together, they delighted in numerous activities, including taking friends water skiing, traveling in their camper trailer to many marvelous places, meeting other Good Sam Travel Club members, and enjoying Rotary International events.

As a young woman she attended the Chicago Institute of Art as an interior design student yet found herself taking every drawing and painting class offered. She followed this passion her whole life. She was instrumental in bringing Tole painting to Amarillo. Finding her real talent and passion as an artist, she created exceptional oil paintings depicting Hill Country bluebonnets, New Mexico landscapes and adobes, floral still life arrangements and other works of art.

As a home maker, Phyllis became an expert seamstress, picking up one of the talents she learned while working in one the Chicago’s early department stores. She loved supporting her daughters’ activities by becoming a Girl Scout leader, poster maker, costume maker and all-round supporter of many school and church activities. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren had many opportunities to experience Phyllis.

Phyllis was a life-long member of the First Christian Church, joining when she first arrived in Amarillo. She was a member of the Rachael Group.

Survivors include her daughters, Suzy Zimmerman of Amarillo and Linda Askew and husband Scott Mathis of Albuquerque, New Mexico; granddaughter, Stacey Zimmerman and husband Sean Pittman of Fayetteville, Arkansas; grandson, Mark Askew Zimmerman of Katy, Texas; and great-grandchildren Colton Farley, Cade Zimmerman and Caitlin Zimmerman.

John Ishmael Rogers – October 20, 2011

John Ishmael Rogers, 87, of Amarillo died Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, in Memory Gardens Cemetery with Alan Burkhalter, pastor of Chaparral Hills Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

John Ishmael Rogers was born Feb. 18, 1924, in Paris, Ark., to Oscar and Lydia Rogers. He was the middle of 13 children — four brothers served in the military.

John I. met and married the love of his life, Patricia Louise, on Oct. 16, 1953, in Dumas. They started a family early — Jim was born in October 1955; Jody in July 1957; Oren in December 1958; Randy in December 1959; and Patrick in October 1963.

John I. always worked hard to support and make sure his family had the best of everything, but he also made sure they knew the value of hard work and honesty.

In the early 1950s, John I founded Rogers Truck Repair to support his family. Patricia was the bookkeeper and bill collector. His sons went to school, got their grades, played sports, then learned how to work on diesel trucks.

John I. enjoyed sponsoring all sports involving young people. When he was a teenager, he would walk to school, help his young teachers, light the school house stoves, get the school bus started, pick up the other kids, drive them to school, park the bus then he would go to class. He did this until he joined the U.S. Army in 1941.

He married Johnnie Keyes in Oklahoma. They had two children, Judy, who was born in August 1947, and John I. Jr., who was born in July 1949.

In 1989, Jody bought Rogers Truck Repair and continued to run the business by the same principles, “Treat a man fair and charge him fair.”

Even though John I. couldn’t work, he would get up early and go unlock the shop and make it ready for the workers.

John I. was raised in the Church of Christ, but later was baptized as a Baptist and joined his neighborhood church, Chaparral Hill Church. He and Patricia loved the fellowship they had there. He greatly missed attending church when he could no longer able to get out of the house.

John I. built his small shop on trust and integrity. Everyone who knew him, to anyone in the trucking business, “Rogers” was well-known.

John I. went home to his Lord, Jesus Christ on Oct., 20, 2011.

He was preceded in death by a son, Randy Rogers, on Oct. 8, 2009.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia; five sons, John I. Rogers Jr. and wife Connie of Fort Worth, and Jim Rogers and wife Denise, Jody Rogers and wife Rhonda, Oren Rogers and Patrick Rogers, all of Amarillo; a daughter, Judy Jester and husband Jackie of Fort Worth; grandson, Jason Rogers and wife Rachael; granddaughter, Stephanie Rogers-Jones and husband Josh and soon-to-be great-grandson, Laeyton Preston Jones; granddaughter, Sommer Rogers-Sims and husband Shane; twin granddaughters, Shelbie and Chelsie Rogers; granddaughter Courtney Rogers and great-grandson, Kyler Rogers; and great-granddaughter, Kadence Rogers, all from Amarillo.

“A man of many hats.”

Born March 17, 1914. He was 97 years old!

Roy wore many hats during his long life. He had many titles: Christian, Mr. B, brother, entrepreneur, father, grandfather, great grandfather, husband, sailor, patriot, cattleman, farmer, boss, city commissioner, grocerman, pore ole Roy, land developer, water utility operator, Rotarian, chief cook and bottle washer, investor, salesman, fisherman, realtor, trader, care giver, mentor, friend, and a great story teller. Roy had many titles during his life time, all of which he enjoyed. He did love to tell stories! You can read one of his Navy stories by Googling his name and finding “The Very Wet Sailor”.

Roy grew up on a black land cotton farm near Frost, Texas, a small town south of the Dallas / Ft. Worth metroplex. His parents, Phillip and Geneva Brinson had eight children. Roy is the last of the brothers and sisters to make their heavenly journey.

Roy grew up during the Great Depression and he never forgot it. He was frugal and loved a bargain. Oh how he loved to grocery shop!

He started his business career by working in a grocery store in Wellington, Tx. While in Wellington he met and married Evelyn Joy Burt. His business career was interrupted by World War II. He became a sailor and served aboard the USS Salt Lake City, a heavy cruiser. He wanted to be a store keeper on board, but because of his aptitude with math, he served as Fire Controlman. Roy never owned a gun during his lifetime but for those Navy years he was one of the trigger fingers for those massive guns on board his ship. His time was spent in the Pacific where he was in most of the great sea battles, and his stories began. He could tell you story after story with amazing recall of far away names. He missed his family but he, along with the Greatest Generations group, was a patriot and loved his country. He never really got rid of the “salt” in his blood.

Upon his return to the US, he opened his first grocery store in Amarillo and was very successful. The business prospered and grew, in 1953 he moved his family to Borger, Tx and purchased the Yoes Brothers grocery. During the late 1950’s he served as a city commissioner for the City of Borger.

In 1961 he along with his partner/son Burt, started a land development around the City of Fritch. It involved several thousand acres and is now home to over 4,500 people. He operated Hi Texas Water Company, a water utility, to service the developed areas. Some of the names of the developments are Arroyo Verde, Ponderosa, Sage Mesa, Antelope Mesa and many more.

Roy was married to Evelyn Joy Burt for 53 years. Joy preceded him in death in 1989. In 1990, Roy married Pauline Ellis of Amarillo. They were married for 21 years. Pauline survives him.

Roy is survived by two children, Burt Brinson of Houston and Beverly Brinson Fry and her husband David Fry of Amarillo , six grandchildren Brooks Brinson of Washington D.C. Bo Brinson of Houston, Tx, Branch Brinson of Katy, Texas, Bonner Brinson of Fulshear, Texas. Aaron Fry of Laguna, NM, and Raegan Fry King of Waco, Tx . Roy had eight great grandchildren.
