Jessie West

Jessie West, 70, of Gonzales, died Thursday, November 6, 2003. He was born January 5, 1933 in Leesville to the late Henry Robert and Erith Dee Ivy West. He was a maintenance technician.

Survivors include his wife, Jo Kathryn West of Gonzales; one son, Jessie West Jr. and wife Mary Ann of Gonzales; five sisters, Dorothy Fagan, Adaline Gordan and husband Nathan, Susie Hicks and husband Doug, Dora Worton and husband Harry, all of Gonzales, and Gillis Yaws of West Columbia; four brothers, Ferd West and wife Audrey, Alvin West and wife Debbie, all of Gonzales, Ernest West and wife Patsy, C. R. West and wife Katie, all of Leesville; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and in-laws; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ed West, Leonard West and David West.

Funeral services were held Sunday, November 9, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Memorial Heights Baptist Church with Rev. Clint Lowrey officiating. Burial followed at Gonzales Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were Joey Clack, Travis Clack, Fred Clack Jr., David Clack, Anthony Polk and Ronald Ramos.

Buffington Funeral Home of Gonzales was in charge of arrangements.

Henrietta Butschek Meneley

Henrietta Butschek Meneley was born March 28, 1920, the third child of Henry and Susanna Kubena Butschek in Hackberry, Texas, a village near Schulenburg. Her death occurred on Saturday, November 15, 2003, at the Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. She was a 1936 graduate of Moulton High School, where she was an excellent student, being named as class salutatorian, and was a member of the championship basketball team. She loved to write stories, including an historical sketch of the Moulton schools in 1936. Her hobbies also included painting, gardening, and a variety of sports.

She married John Nixon Meneley in Moulton on July 5, 1937. During World War II when John served in the U.S. Marines, the family lived for a while in San Diego, California. In 1946 they moved to Gonzales where he owned and operated Meneley Motors.

In the late 1940's, the City of Gonzales developed a park just south of Gonzales, and a contest was held to decide upon a name. Henrietta's was the winning entry, and "Independence Park" was born.

Henrietta and John had six children. Two weeks after the death of her husband in March 1950, Henrietta delivered her last child, Karen, and at the age of 28 had the tremendous responsibility of providing and caring for the young family. She was a strong, independent woman at a time when this was not at all commonplace. She was a self-sacrificing woman and regarded her family as being the most important part of her life. At the family farm south of Gonzales, she raised chickens and opened a dairy farm, while maintaining full-time jobs during the day at GVEC, Bill Hunt Motors and General Telephone Company.

She moved to Victoria in 1961 and in 1966, she became the first woman city letter carrier in the history of the Victoria Post Office. While in Victoria, she was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was active in several organizations including the Legion of Mary.

She returned to the Gonzales home and farm in 1976 after her retirement. She was a member of the St. James Parish Council of Catholic Women. She continued to live at the family farm until her move to The Romberg House in March 2002.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, John Nixon Meneley; brothers, Henry and George Butschek; son, Richard Meneley; son-in-law, David Walshak Sr.; and grandson, Jonathan Dewberry.

She is survived by daughters, Lois Jean "Jeanne" Walshak and Susan Ainsworth and husband A.G., all of Gonzales, Karen Hoffman and husband Ken of Oklahoma City; sons, John Meneley and wife Theresa, Michael Meneley and wife Margie, of Houston; sister, Eleanor Wagner of Moulton; brothers, Edgar Butschek and wife Zina of Dallas, Matthew Butschek and wife Katherine of Wylie, Johnny Butschek and wife Mary Lou of Hallettsville, Robert Butschek and wife Rose of Shiner, and Allan Butschek and wife Susan of Victoria.

Also surviving are brothers-in-law, Gilbert Meneley of Conway, Arkansas, Jim Meneley of Devine and sisters-in-law, Alma Early of Buda, Evelyn Marsh of Adkins and Nell Meneley of San Antonio. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at St. James Catholic Church in Gonzales. Burial followed at the St. James Catholic cemetery.

Pallbearers were David Walshak, Jr., Michael Hagen, Mark Hagen, Aaron Dewberry, Richard Meneley and Robert Remschel Jr.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Foundation, American Cancer Society or to the St. James Catholic Church.

Doris Elizabeth Fox Mellen

Doris Elizabeth Fox Mellen, age 85, of Gonzales, formerly of Castroville, passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2003 in San Antonio. Mrs. Mellen was born August 5, 1918 in Galveston to the late Frances F. and Lucille D. Fox.

Survivors include her children and their spouses: Ronald Roy and Nancy Mellen of Jacksonville, AL., Randle L. Mellen of San Antonio and Lu Ann and Dennis Hartnett of San Antonio; sister, Fran Spencer of Gonzales; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Marjorie Jean Casey.

Funeral services were held Monday, November 17, 2003 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel of the Angels at Forest Park Lawndale cemetery in Houston.

Memorials may be given to St. Peter-St. Joseph Children's home, 919 Mission Road, San Antonio, TX 78210.

Ethel Hendershot Sandquist

Ethel Hendershot Sandquist, 84, of Gonzales, died Tuesday, November 18, 2003. She was born March 30, 1919 in Gonzales County, to the late Charles C. and Betty Caroline Murphy Hendershot, of Gonzales and Caldwell County, respectively. She was a retired secretary of the Dallas School District. She married Robert Lincoln Sandquist on August 11, 1944 in Victoria and he preceded her in death on January 7, 1988.

Survivors include one sister, Carrie Maddox of Tuleta, Texas and one brother, Virgil Hendershot of Lockhart.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest and Jake Hendershot and two sisters, Bertha Purcell and Delores Crabtree.

Funeral services were held Friday, November 21, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home in Gonzales with Rev. Todd Craven officiating. Burial followed at the Harwood City cemetery.

Her nephews served as pallbearers.

Ruth W. Lyman Hamilton

Ruth W. Lyman Hamilton, 91, of Gonzales, died Wednesday, November 19, 2003. She was born in Gonzales on March 28, 1912 to the late Fred Milton and Mary Lyman. She was a housewife and a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include her step-son, Richard "Dick" Hamilton and wife Dana of Cedar Park; three grandchildren, Russell Hamilton, Ryan Hamilton and Kristen Alex.

She was preceded in death by six sisters, Nellie Lyman, Amanda Hughs, Bertha Hall, Winnie Glover, Martha Hull and Rachel Glover; two brothers, Robert William Lyman and F. M. Lyman.

Funeral services were held Friday, November 21, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Buffington Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Henderson officiating. Burial followed at the Gonzales City cemetery.

Pallbearers were Russell Hamilton, Eric Bernie, R. W. Lyman, Ryan Hamilton, David Lyman and Kevin Alex.

Memorials can be made to Memorial Heights Baptist Church, the Alzheimer's Association or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Lionisio "Shiner" Banda

Lionisio "Shiner" Banda, 72, of Gonzales, died Sunday, November 16, 2003. He was born October 9, 1931 in Yorktown to the late Guillermo "Willie" and Ignacia Banda. He worked in the maintenance department for the City of Gonzales and was a member of the Catholic church.

Survivors include his wife, Amelia Banda of Gonzales; two daughters, Sylvia Leal and husband Erasmo and Gloria Contreras and husband Rudy, all of Gonzales; four sons, Michael Banda Sr., Richard Banda, Leon Banda and wife Michelle, all of Gonzales and Oscar Banda and wife Terry of Seguin; four sisters, Angelita Tellez, Alberta Garcia and husband Leon, all of Victoria, Amelia Leiba of Yoakum and Louisa Guerrero of Weimar; four brothers, Jose Partida and wife Hacienta and Daniel Banda and wife Cecilia, all of Victoria, Willie Banda Jr. and wife Janie of Bloomington, Guadalupe Banda and wife Sylvia of Yoakum; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Juanita Arguellez and Manuela Reyes and one grandson, Michael Banda Jr.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at 2:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. Martin Leopold officiating. Burial followed at St. James cemetery.

Pallbearers were Abundio Arguellez, Armando Arguellez, Leo DeLeon, Porfirio DeLeon, Ruben Torres, Mario Arguellez, Felix Argullez, Gilbert Argullez and Frank Joe Argullez.

Lillian "Pet" Currie

Lillian "Pet" Currie, 100, of Gonzales, died Thursday, November 27, 2003. She was born September 13, 1903 in Pilgrim to the late Rhett and Fannie Patterson Mills, both of Gonzales County respectively. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church. She married Sidney L. Qualls and he preceded her in death in March of 1934. She married Ernest Earl Currie on September 13, 1934 and he preceded her in death on December 21, 1966.

Survivors include three daughters, Peggie Schultz of Gonzales, Joy Milstead and husband Ed of San Antonio and Louise Salter and husband Calvin of Livingston; two sons, Emmitt Currie and wife Marie of Gonzales and Jack S. Qualls and wife Kay of Tomball; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her two husbands and her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters, a son, Joe Qualls Sr. and a grandson, Woody Salter.

Funeral services were held at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home in Gonzales on Sunday, November 30, 2003 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jay Brown officiating. Burial followed at Gonzales Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were her grandsons and great-grandsons.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, the First Baptist Church Restoration Fund or the charity of one's choice.

Roy Hayward Malaer

Roy Hayward Malaer, 56, of Waelder, died Thursday, November 27, 2003. He was born March 20, 1947 in Gonzales to Olen A. and Margaret Glover Malaer, Sr. He was a member of the Waelder Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his father, Olen Malaer, Sr. of Saturn; wife, Linda Kay Malaer of Waelder; daughter, Pamela Michelle Prichett and husband Jeff D. of Cuero and son, Scott Hayward Malaer of Waelder; two grandchildren, Shelby Michelle Pritchett of Cuero and Mason Riley Malaer of Baytown; sister, Patricia Govett of Saturn; four brothers, Olen Malaer Jr. and Vernon Malaer, both of Saturn, Albert Malaer of Port Lavaca and David Malaer of Harwood.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Funeral services were held at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home of Gonzales on Saturday, November 29, 2003 at 10 a.m. with Rev. David Hagen officiating. Burial followed at the Waelder City cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mark Malaer, Billy Malaer, Danny Janecka, II, Jeff Cernosek, Wayne Guzman and Richard Caka.

Honorary pallbearers were David Jones, Robert Halbardier, Debbie Bayley, Jose Vargas and Ciro Contreras.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or South Texas Hospice, 1206 N. Texana, Suite A., Hallettsville, TX 77964.

Vance Seth Glover

Vance Seth Glover, 79, of Luling, died Saturday, November 29, 2003. He was born November 22, 1924 in Lockhart to the late Carl T. and Alma Watts Glover. He worked for Dow Chemical and was a former member of the American Legion.

Survivors include three daughters, Cheri Smith of Wimberly; Renee Zella and Robin Belsher, both of Gonzales; three sons, Randy Glover and Wesley Glover, both of Luling and James Reed of Gonzales; nine grandchildren, Brandon Zella of Stockdale, Teri Johnson, Grant Zella, Vanessa Glass, Carley Glass and Presley Belsher, all of Gonzales and Vance Smith of San Antonio, Seth Glover of Corpus Christi and Brandy Glover of Luling and five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Carl Morgan Glover and Homer Wesley Glover, both of Luling.

Funeral services were held December 2, 2003 at 2 p.m. at O'Bannon Funeral home in Luling with Rev. Randolph Robbins officiating. Burial followed at the Clearfork cemetery in Caldwell County.

Pallbearers were Brandon Zella, Grant Zella, Teri Zella, Vance Smith, Seth Glover and Vanessa Glass.

Memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or to the charity of one's choice.

O'Bannon Funeral Home of Luling was in charge of arrangements.

Ernestina DeLaGarza

Ernestina DeLaGarza, 79, of Luling, died Friday, November 14, 2003. She was born January 4, 1924 in Sabinal, Texas to the late Raymundo and Isabel Magallanes Martinez. She was married to the late Gilbert DeLaGarza. She was a member of the Iglesia Avivamento De Dios-Pentecostal Church of Lockhart.

Survivors include one daughter, Esperanza Gonzales of Luling; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two sisters, Maria Perez and Guadalupe Martinez, both of San Antonio; one brother, Raymundo Martinez Jr. of San Antonio.

She was preceded in death by two sisters.

Funeral services were held Monday, November 17, 2003 at O'Bannon Funeral Home in Luling at 10 a.m. with Rev. Ruben Capello officiating. Burial followed at the Community cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ernest Cappelo, Jose Ruiz, Sammy Almanza, Edwin Gonzalez, John Gonzalez and Anastacio Rodriguez.

Memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or to the charity of one's choice.

Annie Rebecca Schlortt Smith

Annie Rebecca Schlortt Smith was born July 11, 1913 to John William and Susie McDonald Schlortt.

She attended Upton School and was a graduate of Smithville High School. She attended Southwest Texas State College in San Marcos and later received bachelor and master degrees from the University of Houston. She taught school at Cedar Creek prior to her marriage.

She married Glenn Frank Smith on August 2, 1936 at the home of her parents in Upton, Texas. They had two daughters, Laura Sue and Martha Alice. She lived in Navasota, Kilgore, Lufkin, Upton, Smithville, Houston and retired to Harwood. She taught school for more than 25 years, mostly at Aldine ISD's Orange Grove Elementary, Inez Carrol Elementary and Houston's Cooley Elementary.

She is fondly remembered by many of her former students and fellow teachers. She enjoyed growing flowers and vegetables, talking on amateur radio, camping, traveling, doing craft projects, crocheting, sewing, trying new recipes and working with children.

She was a member of Houston Area Retired Teachers Association, Texas Retired Teachers Association, Amateur Radio Relay League, Young Ladies Radio League, Gulf Area Young Ladies Amateur Radio Klub, Amateur Radio Campers, South Texas Emergency Net, Daughters of the American Revolution, Harwood Craft Club, Texas Educational Extension Association and Harwood Methodist Church.

She was very proud that she had obtained her 90th birthday.

She passed away among her friends at the Hillcrest Nursing Home and with her two daughters at her bedside.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 64 years; two brothers, R.E. Schlortt and Quinn Schlortt; brother-in-law, Clark Young.

She is survived by her daughters, Laura Sue (Suzy) Hutton and husband Karl and Martha Alice Flukinger and husband Kenneth; grandchildren, Mike Hutton, Lisa Hutton, Eva Flukinger, Quinn Flukinger and wife Melissa; sister, Alice Young Wenzel; step-great-grandson, Andrew Harper; sisters-in-law, Minnie Schlortt and Esther Schlortt; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at the Harwood Methodist Church on Thursday, December 11, 2003 at 2 p.m. Burial followed at Young School House cemetery at Upton.

Pallbearers were Herman William Schlortt, Jacob Guedry, Matt Woodruff, Laban Marsh, Bill Doughty and Randy Schneider.

O'Bannon Funeral Home of Luling was in charge of arrangements.
