Marisol Plasencia

Marisol Plasencia, 19, of Gonzales, died Sunday, December 7, 2003. She was born March 18, 1984 in Mexico to Braulio Plasencia of Huntsville and Genoveva Martinez of Gonzales. She was a member of the Catholic Church.

Survivors include her parents; two sisters, Griselda Plasencia and Magli Garcia, both of Gonzales; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services were held Thursday, December 11, 2003 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. Martin Leopold officiating. Burial followed at the St. James cemetery.

Buffington Funeral Home of Gonzales was in charge of arrangements.

W. Wanda Morrison

W. Wanda Morrison, 73, of Castroville, passed away on Tuesday, December 9, 2003 in San Antonio. She was born January 15, 1930 in San Antonio to the late Gene and Lu Dale Montgomery Goar.

Survivors include her husband Albert H, Morrison of Castroville; daughter, Emily Loudell Young of Castroville; sons, Albert E. Morrison of San Antonio and Henry M. Morrison of Castroville; grandchildren and their spouses, Corey C. and Jason D. Clendenin of Japan, Crystal G. and John Mark Rogers of Tyler and Cody A. Morrison of Castroville; great-grandchildren, Hannah Grace Rogers and Samuel David Clendenin.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Emogene Roecker.

Visitation will be held at the St. Louis Catholic Church in Castroville on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 from 5:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. A funeral mass will be offered Tuesday, December 16, 2003 at 7 p.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church. Interment will follow on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at 1 p.m. at the Monthalia Lutheran cemetery in Monthalia.

Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home of Castroville is in charge of arrangements.

Consuelo Cisneros Santos

Consuelo Cisneros Santos, 58, of Midland, died Monday, December 27, 2004. She was born June 2, 1946 to Manuel C. and Paula Flores Pena Cisneros in San Antonio. Her early years were spent in San Antonio before the family moved to Nixon. On May 4, 1969 she married Toribio Santos in Nixon. The couple moved to Midland in 1980. She was a seamstress and had worked for Valenzia Upholstery, Josie's Upholstery and Pina Upholstery.

Survivors include her husband; sons, Toribio Santos, IV, Rodger Santos, both of Midland; daughter, Sonya Moniq Santos of Midland; mother, Paula Cisneros; brother, Manuel Cisneros of Nixon; sisters, Minerva Arce of Seguin, Olga Arce of Victoria and Gracie Garcia of Smiley.

She was preceded in death by her father.

A rosary was held Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel in Midland. Arrangements were under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.

A rosary was held at 6 p.m. Thursday, December 30, 2004 at Finch Funeral Chapel in Nixon.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, December 31, 2004 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Nixon. Interment followed at the Burriolas cemetery in Smiley.

Funeral services were under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home of Midland.

Maxima "Maxie" Flores

Maxima "Maxie" Flores, 86, of Gonzales died Sunday, December 12, 2004. She was born April 5, 1918 in Gonzales to the late Pablo and Enedina Garza Garcia. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Guadalupana Society. She was married to the late Frank R. Flores.

Survivors include two sons, Ruben Flores Sr. and wife Concha of Austin and George Flores and wife Rosie of Gonzales; four sisters, Roberta Porras and Ruth Porras, both of Houston, Clemencia Martinez and Martha Cerda, both of Gonzales; three grandchildren, Ruben Flores Jr of Austin, Debbie Martinez and Laura Tristan, both of San Antonio; two great-grandchildren, Austin Martinez and Ruben Flores III.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Guadalupe Garcia and one sister, Maria Munos.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 15, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. Martin Leopold officiating. Interment followed at the St. James cemetery.

Buffington Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Jurica, Sr.

Robert Jurica, Sr., 83, of Seguin, died Tuesday, September 21, 2004 in San Antonio. He was born December 6, 1920 in Gonzales County to the late Willie and Mary Pesek Jurica. He served in the Army Air Corps in WW II. He was also a farmer and a member of the St. James Catholic Church of Gonzales. He married Viola Matilda Benes on September 11, 1946 in Gonzales.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Carol Jane Cusick and husband Gary of Brunswick, Georgia; one son, Robert "Bumpy" Jurica, Jr. of Canyon Lake; two grandchildren, Dwayne Allen Cusick of Seguin and Kevin Lee Cusick of New Braunfels; two great-grandchildren, Megan Cusick and Aaron Cusick, both of New Braunfels; four brothers, Rudolph Jurica and Herman Jurica, both of Shiner, Fred Jurica of Canyon Lake and Marvin Jurica of New Braunfels.

Funeral services were held Thursday, September 23, 2004 at 7 p.m. at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home and a private graveside family service was held at Fort Sam Houston National cemetery in San Antonio.

Pallbearers were Harvey Jurica, Ronny Jurica, Buford Jurica, Kevin Cusick, Dwayne Cusick and Willie Benes.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Dawson Morris Minear

Funeral services for Dawson Morris Minear, 87, of Mansfield, were held Friday, September 24, 2004 at Blessing Colonial Chapel in Mansfield with interment held at Emerald Hills Memorial Park in Kennedale, Texas.

Mr. Minear died Tuesday, September 21, 2004, in Fort Worth. He was born in the Clark Community in Gonzales County on May 1, 1917, the son of Elias Anderson and Irene Waldrop Minear. He married Audrey Ann Wiley, who preceded him in death on April 4, 1964. He married Bernice Edna Mills in San Antonio on September 4, 1964. Dawson was a retired printer for the Wichita times newspaper in Wichita Falls.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Minear of Mansfield; five children, James M. Minear of Gonzales, Margaret Litterer of Mansfield, Francis J. Ulinski of Copperus Cove, Robert W. Lee of Terrell and Michael R. Lee of Riverside, Ohio; 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; two grreat-great-grandchildren and one sister, Lela LePori of Gonzales.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Audrey, three sisters and two brothers.

Blessing Funeral Home of Mansfield was in charge of arrangements.

Arthur Jack Staggs, Jr.

Arthur Jack Staggs, Jr., 63, of Seguin, died Monday, September 20, 2004 at his residence. He was born December 23, 1940 in Fort Worth to Arthur Jack and Mary Ann Anderson Staggs, Sr. He was a maintenance supervisor for Castle Hills First Baptist Church of San Antonio for about 14 years and he had worked for Kellar-Martin Construction for 12 years. He loved to work with wood in his workshop and was a member of Bulverde Methodist Church.

Survivors include his step-father, Larry Burkhalter of Fort Worth; four daughters, Teri McQueary, Toni Hall, both of Fort Worth, Cynthia Alsobrooks and Michelle Moczygemba, both of Seguin; three sons, Douglas Staggs of Fort Worth, Donnie Staggs of Seguin and Kelly Staggs of Fort Worth; seven grandchildren, Ryan Alsobrooks, Sean McQueary, Stephanie Hall, Ashford Hall, Wyatt Hall, Kerisery Staggs and Colby Staggs; one great-grandchild; his ex-wife, Vera Staggs of Gonzales.

Funeral services were held at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home in Gonzales on Wednesday, September 23, 2004 at 10 a.m. Burial followed at the Hermann Sons cemetery.

Pallbearers were Dr. Commie Hisey, Paul Shealy, James Carter, Hal Heintz, Nathan Moczygemba and Ashley Alsobrooks.

Honorary pallbearers were friends of Castle Hills First Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, or Castle Hills First Baptist Church of San Antonio.

John Maynard Hurt III

John Maynard Hurt III, 24, of Waelder, died Friday, August 6, 2004. He was born March 27, 1980 in Gonzales to John Maynard and Karena Peck Hurt, Sr. of Waelder. He was self-employed as a ranch foreman.

Survivors include his parents; one sister, Katie Hurt of Waelder; grandparents, John and Marth Hurt of Hobson; one daughter, Alena Dorine Null Hurt of Sealy.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandmother, Rena Peck; his aunt, Sandra Hershberger.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at 10 a.m. at Smith Funeral Chapel in Flatonia. Burial followed at the Hurt Brothers cemetery in Waelder.

Clara Bell Mathis Fryer

Clara Bell Mathis Fryer was born on June 29, 1930, to the parentage of Edward and Tiny Polk Mathis, in Gonzales County, Texas. She was the oldest of seven children born to this union. She grew up in the Elm Slough Community and confessed to Christ at an early age by becoming a member of Evans Chapel United Methodist Church. She later moved her membership to Henson Chapel UMC, where she remained a faithful member throughout her lifetime.

Clara was a willing worker for the Lord and served the church in many capacities which included; Sunday School Superintendent, United Methodist Women, Communion Steward, Youth Coordinator, Founder of Four Seasons Tea, Education Committee and Hospitality Committee,

Clara was a graduate of Edwards High School in Gonzales. After high school, she continued to pursue her education by receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from Huston Tillotson College and began her teaching career at age 19 in rural Gonzales County. She received a Master's of Education degree from Prairie View A&M; University. She became the "Homemaking Teacher" at Edwards High School. As an accomplished seamstress, she taught her students basic and advanced sewing and the culinary arts. Also, she taught at Gonzales High School, where she retired after over 40 years in the teaching profession.

In 1955, she was united in holy matrimony to Lawrence Winston Fryer. To this union three lovely children were born, Lawrence Jr., Andre and Iberia.

Clara was a devoted, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, sister-in-law, and a friend to everyone. Being a woman of great strength and integrity, she touched many lives with her generosity, acts of kindness, and her genuine affection for others.

She was a member of several professional and civic affiliations including the Texas State Teachers' Association, the Progressive Club, where she was serving as president; Heroines of Jericho Lodge, Most Ancient Matron, Edwards Alumni Association, Charter Board Member; Retired Teachers' Association, Gonzales Chapter; Garden Club, Old Timers Club, Huston Tillitson Alumni Association, Prairie View A&M; Alumni Association, Waelder Lions Club, Waelder Livestock Association, National Homemaking Association and Waelder FFA, Honorary Member.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Walter Mathis, Noble Mathis, Ross Mathis and Edward (Son) Mathis; three sisters, Josie Stevens, Bessie Randle Wallace and Franner (Sugar) Brasfield; special in-laws, Brack and Bessie Fryer, Lacy, Sr. and Carolyn Fryer.

She leaves to cherish her memory a loving a devoted husband, Lawrence Winston Fryer, Sr., of Gonzales; two sons, Lawrence Jr., Lieutenant Colonel USMC Ret and wife Dr. Cheryl Fryer of Silver Spring, Maryland, Andre Fryer, Major, USA Ret. (Inf. Airborne Ranger) and wife Pamela of San Antonio; one daughter, Iberia Fryer Smith and husband Benny of Orange; seven grandchildren, Adriene La Trice Steen, Tamika Fryer, Benny Smith Jr., Winston Brack Fryer, Andrew Lawrence Smith, Lawrence W. Fryer, III, and Clara Arianna Fryer; two step-grandchildren, Marcus and Julian; two sisters, Florence and husband Frank Fryer Sr., of Gonzales, Willie Mae and husband Dr. Norman Dyer, Sr., of Dallas; two brothers, Elias Sr. and wife Magalene Mathis of San Antonio and Topsy Mathis of Fort Worth; five sister-in-laws, Gracie Mathis of San Antonio, Dorothy Mathis of Fort Worth, Joycesteen Ruffin of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Cloteal and husband Floyd Lott of Runge and Bobbie Fryer Courett of Houston; one aunt, Verna Polk of Houston; 17 nieces, 18 nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

A wake was held Saturday, August 7, 2004 at Henson Chapel United Methodist Church from 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services were held Sunday, August 8, 2004 at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Marilyn Rice and Rev. Johnny Toy, officiating. Burial followed at the Elm Slough cemetery.

Pallbearers were Frank Fryer Jr., Norman Dyer Jr., William Brasfield Jr., Corey Mathis, Topsy Green, Joe Edward Mathis, Carl Holmes, Lacy Fryer Jr., Earl Lott, Topsy Lynn Mathis and Derrick Todd Courett.

Honorary pallbearers were George Mathis Sr., Irvin Randle, Warren Dell Green, Dr. Norman Dyer, Darren Nelson, Sam Clack, Jesse Tanner, Norman Randle Jr., David Russell, Huelen Smith Sr., Sidney Thomas, David James Jr., William Brasfield Sr. and Eugene Wilson.

Memorials may be made to Henson Chapel United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Kelley Memorial Funeral Home of Luling was in charge of arrangements.

Sam F. Wyatt

Sam F. Wyatt, 65, of Gonzales, died Monday, May 31, 2004 in New Braunfels. He was born July 22, 1938 in Gonzales to the late Charles F. and Farice Phydelia Wilkerson Wyatt. He was a heavy equipment operator and a member of the Baptist church. He married Bertha Gail Sloan on July 20, 1963 in Austin.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Sam A. Wyatt of Gonzales and Ralph S. Wyatt of Waco; one sister, Charlene Fleeger of Lexington, Texas; two brothers, James Wyatt of Lawton, OK and John L. Wyatt of Pflugerville.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffery James Wyatt and a brother, Dennis Wyatt.

Graveside funeral services will be held at Gonzales Memorial Park on Saturday, June 5, 2004 at 10 a.m.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Ruth Jodie Smith Snyder

Ruth Jodie Smith Snyder, 69 of Bastrop, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004 in Webster, Texas. She was born February 24, 1935 in Denver, Colorado to the late Dr. Emmett Montgomery and Katherine Sarah Young Smith, of Gonzales and Pittsburg, PA, respectively. She was a real estate broker and had been a partner in John Adams Homes Realtors in Seguin and a member of the Episcopal Church of the Messiah and the Sesame Study Club of Gonzales.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Katherine Ellen and Daniel Randall of League City, Texas; sons and daughters-in-law, James Montgomery and Cecelia Snyder of San Antonio, Timothy Steven and Jana Snyder of Lubbock; seven grandchildren, Timothy Brandon Snyder, Cameron Lee Randall, Sarah Ellen Snyder, Steven Thomas Synder, Katherine Danelle Randall, James Montgomery Snyder, Jr. and Kylie Brook Randall; one brother, E. Montgomery Smith Jr. of Crowley, Texas.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 4, 2004 at 10 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Messiah in Gonzales with Rev. Buzz Yarborough officiating. Interment followed at the Gonzales Masonic cemetery.

Pallbearers were James Montgomery Synder, Timothy Steven Snyder, Daniel Lee Randall, Cameron Lee Randall, John Lamprecht, M. G. Hodges, James Montgomery Snyder, Jr. and William H. Burges.

Honorary pallbearers were E. Montgomery Smith, Jr., Timothy Brandon Snyder and Steven Thomas Snyder.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the American Cancer Society or to the Episcopal Church of the Messiah.

SSGT Dora Deane Windwehen, USAF Ret.

SSGT Dora Deane Windwehen, USAF Ret., 74, of Gonzales, died Monday, May 31, 2004 in Luling. She was born October 21, 1929 in Gonzales County to the late Erwin E. and Ola M. Staton Windwehen. She was retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years service. She was a member of the American Legion Post #40.

Survivors include two sisters, Joy Wiley of Gonzales and Polly Crow of Granite Shoals, Texas; numerous loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Alvin and Elton Windwehen.

Funeral services were held Thursday, June 3, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home with Rev. Ildiko Ridgey officiating. Burial followed at the Greenwood cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the D.A.V. or the American Diabetes Association.
