Carter Glenn Thomas
Carter Glenn Thomas died May 20, 2008. He was born on Nov. 15, 1928, the son of Aubrey Andrew and Verna Mae Carter.
He grew up with his parents and younger brothers, John Archie and Douglas on the family farm near Cranfills Gap.
Mr. Thomas was a hard worker and spent many hours doing farm work. Some of his favorite memories included hauling hay with his friends, “Ole Shep,” Bill Schibler and Fats Burleson.
Family was most important to Mr. Thomas. Following the death of his dad, he felt it was his responsibility to look after his mother and younger brothers. When Douglas was killed in Viet Nam and his mother’s health began to decline, he did everything he could to take care of his mother and John Archie.
In 2001 he suffered a severe hip injury with complications that kept him hospitalized for three months. Doctors didn’t expect Mr. Thomas to regain his ability to be mobile again. Yet he worked diligently to be able to walk and take care of John. He and John then shared a room at Meridian Manor where Mr. Thomas continued to encourage John to do everything he was capable of. Mr. Thomas worked hard at physical therapy and encouraged others to do their therapy and participate in all activities available for the nursing home residents.
Mr. Thomas loved his nursing home family at Meridian Manor where he and John were treated with kindness, compassion and dignity. He enjoyed the good food where he “didn’t even have to help with the dishes!” (as he had done the cooking and cleaning when he was living in the family home.) Although he loved his family home and had not wanted to ever live elsewhere, once he and John were settled in Meridian Manor, he often spoke of how he enjoyed living there. He would often tell his visitors about the people at the nursing home being his friends and indeed they were. He loved them and felt loved by them.
Mr. Thomas was a man of few words. He listened much more than he talked. He rarely criticized of complained. When others did, he’d gently say, “Well, hon, they’re doing the best they can.” He always believed the best of everyone. It was not in his nature to be quarrelsome or unkind. Since he was so totally trustworthy himself, he trusted everyone else. If he had a fault, it would be that he believed others to be as honest as he was and trusted them totally.
Mr. Thomas was a man of strong faith and trust in our Lord and Savior. He often reminded others to “trust in the good Lord.” He knew there is only one Lord and Carter trusted Him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Aubrey and Verna Thomas and his brothers, Douglas and John Thomas. Survivors include his sister-in-law, Rosalie Thomas Matthews of Waco and friend Lou Ann Unger, also of Waco.

Peggy Wenzel, 82, of the Aleman community died May 22, 2008 in the Dove Hill Care Center in Hamilton. Funeral services were held May 24 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aleman with Pastor Meissner officiating. Burial followed in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery
Mrs. Wenzel was born May 25, 1926 in Vernon, the daughter of William and Pearl Chumney Neal. She was married to Marvin Wenzel in Aleman in 1947.
Mrs. Wenzel was a homemaker and a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Aleman.
Survivors include her husband, Marvin Wenzel of Aleman; two children, Judy Bingham of Comanche and Larry Wenzel of Addison; three grandchildren, Josh, Jessica, and Janell Bingham; one sister, Irene Parrish of Temple, and one brother, M.A. Neal of Fort Worth.
Pallbearers were Gary Voges, Josh Bingham, Chris Bottlinger, Roger Wenzel, Lee Roy Tyson and Tommy Faubion.

Harvey Louis Mayfield
Harvey Mayfield, 81, of Abilene died July 16, 2008. Funeral services were held July 18 at The Hamil Family Fu-neral Home in Abilene with Jack Roseberry officiated. Bur-ial was in Elmwood Memorial Park
He was born in Jones County on May 4, 1927, the son of Marvin and Ida (Storey) Mayfield. He was married to Dorothy Lee Roseberry on July 29, 1945 in Anson. She pre-ceded him in death March 19, 2007.
Mr. Mayfield served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1947. He was a profile ma-chinist for General Dynamics for 31 years. He had lived in Abilene since 1952, when he moved from Anson. He was a member of Highland Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Ida Mayfield; his wife, Dorothy Mayfield; a sister, Viola How-ell; and three brothers, Vernon, Arnold and J.C. Mayfield.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Lisa and Greg Lemond, of Abi-lene, and Diane and Bryce Maryfield, of San Antonio; one sister, Lera Karp, of Sterling, Colo.; four grandchildren, Trey Maryfield and his wife Kim, Shannon Maryfield-Lamb, Christy Hernandez and her husband Roberto, and Chad Lemond; three great-grandchildren, Hayden Lamb, Brenden and Braylon Hernan-dez; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Roberto Hernandez, Chad Lemond, Trey Maryfield, J.J. Perez, Mick Clary and Chuck Lawson.

Mr. Williams
Henry “Hank” Williams, 78, died Feb. 11, 2003. Graveside services were held Feb. 17 in Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park.
Originally from Hamilton, Mr. Williams was an Air Force bomber pilot in World War II and a prisoner of war in Germany.
He continued his Air Force career after the war and last served at Strategic Air Command Headquarters, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1968.
He earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Nebraska. Mr. Keller was a retired systems analyst and retired after a 20-year career at Bell Helicopter in Hurst.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Jo Anne; son, Dr. Michael Williams and wife Susan of Logan, Utah; daughter, Deborah Subke and husband Charles of Houston; grandchildren, Jordan Williams and wife Jocelyn, Matthew Williams, Joseph Williams, Kristen Subke and Drew Subke; brothers Weldon “Red” Williams and wife Marilyn of Hamilton, Maurice Williams and wife Jerri of Itasca; sisters, Ethlene French and Frances Wood of Hamilton and numerous nieces and nephews.

Juanita Maye Kirkland Bullard, 80, died Feb. 11, 2003 in the Hamilton Hospital. Funeral services were held Feb. 14 at Riley Funeral Home Chapel in Hamilton with Rev. Bob Ray officiating. Burial was in Lanham Cemetery.
She was born Sept. 29, 1922, the daughter of J.D. and Alice Green Kirkland.
She was married to Clarence Arburn Bullard on Jan. 18, 1943. The couple spent most of their lives in Fairy until Mrs. Bullard moved to the Forest Oaks Nursing Home. Mr. Bullard preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 1991.
Mrs. Bullard was a long-time member of the Agee Baptist Church and was a Sunday School teacher for many years before joining the Fairy Baptist Church.
She enjoyed playing dominoes with her friends in the Fairy Community. She also enjoyed gardening and canning produce from her vegetable gardens. She spent many hours piecing together quilt tops and crocheting.
She is preceded in death by two sisters, her twin, Charleta and Mildred Bailey and a brother, David Kirkland.
Survivors include a son, Donald M. Bullard and wife Peggy of Fairy; three grandchildren, Mark Bullard of Arlington, Donna Fretz of Mansfield and Janet Forsberg of Arlington; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Cecil Kirkland of Hamilton, Bobby Kirkland of China Springs and Kenneth Kirkland of Hamilton.

Tommie B (Candy) Ford, 100, died April 8, 2003 at a Gatesville hospital. Funeral services were conducted April 10 at Scott’s Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Moody and Rev. Ben Disney officiating. Burial followed at Restland Cemetery.
She was born Jan. 19, 1903 near Turnersville, the daughter of Christopher Thomas and Mary Elizabeth (Brown) Brim.
Mrs. Ford graduated from Turnersville High School, Meridian Junior College and received a B.S. degree from East Texas State University. She taught in public schools in Coryell and Hamilton counties for 11 years.
She was married to Chauncey J. Ford on Aug. 1, 1932 in Osage. He preceded her in death on March 13, 1976.
Mrs. Ford lived in Waco since 1942 and was a member of Central United Methodist Church and as long as her health permitted she was active in the church, United Methodist Women and the Friendship Sunday School Class. She worked with Meals on Wheels for 19 years and volunteered at American Red Cross.
She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers and five sisters.
Survivors include two sisters, Essie Leach of Turnersville and Nola Pruitt of Gatesville and a host of nieces, nephews, their families and friends.
Pallbearers were her nephews, Russell Pancake, Walter Rowe, Rex Leach, Bubby Harris, John Dollins and Ed Leach.

Mr. Hohertz
Arthur Hohertz, 93, of Priddy, died April 9, 2003 at Hamilton General Hospital. Funeral services were held April 11 at Zion Lutheran Church in Priddy with Pastor Kingman officiating. Burial was at St. John Cemetery in Priddy.
He was born Aug. 28, 1909 in Priddy, the son of Edward Hohertz and Louise Marwitz Hohertz. He was married to Freida Tiemann on Nov. 19, 1931 in Priddy. He had lived in Priddy most of his life.
Mr. Hohertz was a member of the Lutheran Church and Sons of Herman. He was a farmer and a rancher.
He is preceded in death by his wives, Freida and Leta; a son, Lee Roy Hohertz and a stepson, Otis Wilson.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Hohertz of Lubbock, Kenneth and wife Pam Hohertz of Big Valley; two daughters, Melbadean and husband Jack Tarter of Lake Brownwood, Ester Pearl and husband Calvert Hennig of Gardendale; 13 grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; a sister, Opal Schrank of Hamilton; a brother-in-law, Pete Tiemann of Priddy; four step children, Corky and wife Joyce Wilson, Tom and wife Rita Wilson, Mary and husband Max Cagle, John and wife Virginia Wilson.

Geneva Miller, 82, of Carlton died March 21, 2003 at Harris Methodist Hospital in Stephenville. Funeral services were conducted at Harrell Memorial Chapel on March 24 with Rev. Steven Parker officiating. Burial was at Hazeldell Cemetery.
She was born Dec. 14, 1920 in Lamkin, the daughter of Sidney James Kerley and Clora McMurtrey Kerley.
She was married to Clint Lee Miller on Aug. 17, 1940 in Dublin. He preceded her in death on Oct. 5, 1996.
Mrs. Miller was a member of Carlton Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Johnnie Welch of Victoria, Nora Welch of Celeste, Gay French of Carlton, Brenda Cooper of Carlton; a son, Sid Miller of Rendon; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren and a sister, Winnie Austin of Dublin.

Melvin Albert Lange, 90 of Anadarko, Oklahoma died April 7, 2003 at the Baylor Medical Center at Garland. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 12, 2003 at the Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Ray Weathers officiating. Burial was at Memorial Lane Cemetery in Anadarko, OK.
Mr. Lange was born March 13, 1913 in Hamilton, the son of Ernest and Alma (Sommerfeld) Lange. He and the former Loraine Roach were married in Anadarko on March 30, 1937. She preceded him in death on July 13, 2000.
Mr. Lange grew up in near Aleman and farmed with his family until moving to Anadarko.
He drove a gas truck for several years. He also owned and operated a Texaco station and grocery store, with his wife until their retirement in 1976.
Mr. Lange was a long-time faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his son, Darrel Lange; parents; brothers, Willie Lange, and Bruno Lange and sisters, Mary Rinehart, Elsie Hohertz, and Anita Kopp.
Survivors include his son, Lynwood Lange Sr. his wife Betty of Dallas; three grandsons, Lynwood Lange Jr. wife Karen of Flower Mound, Chris Lange wife Carolyn of Dallas, John Lange of Mesa, Ariz.; two granddaughters, Lori Salyer and her husband David, of Cement, Okla., Jennifer Lange of Gracemont, Okla,; three great-grandsons, Colten and Ryker Salyer of Cement and Tyler Lange of Flower Mound; one sister-in-law, Albertina Lange of Dodd City, two brothers-in law, Lavoy Roach and wife, Oleta of Garland and Lavon Roach and his wife Jean, of Arkansas; several nieces and nephews, cousins, and other relatives and dear friends.

Charles “Chuck” Ray Hein, aka “Cutter”, 60, of Willis, died April 11, 2003 in Baytown.
Mr. Hein was born May 22, 1942 in Hamilton and he graduated from Oak Cliff High School in 1960. He was a Master Mason in Bruton-Conner Lodge 1322 and was affiliated with Scottish Rite and Hella Temple Shiners in Garland.
He is preceded in death by his father, Edgar Erich Hein.
Survivors include his mother, Lena Hein; wife, Sandra Hein; children, Amy Vines and husband Gregg and John Erich Hein; step-children, Scott Cowen, Stacey Hula and husband Randall, Stephen Cowen and wife Jennifer; grandchildren, Joshua and Jacob Barker, Courtney, Ashley, Courtney P., Shelbie M., Katelyn and Jacob Cowen, Sarah and Hullie Hula and numerous other relatives and friends.

Nora Emma Sophia Bottlinger 93, died April 10, 2003 at Hamilton. Funeral services were held April 14, 2003 at St. John Lutheran Church in Hamilton with burial in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery at Aleman, Pastor Russell Nebhut and Vicar Aaron Kretzschmar officiating.
Mrs. Bottlinger was born November 8, 1909 at Aleman, the daughter of Otto Adolph Kelm and Lena Ana Limmer Kelm.
On June 14, 1931 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Aleman, she was married to Lee Monroe Bottlinger. They shared fifty-one years of married life prior to his passing on August 13, 1982.
She was a loving devoted wife and helpmate to her husband, a loving mother, grandmother, great- grandmother and great-great- grandmother. She worked many years not only taking care of her family but also taking care of children of others in the community. Providing care for children brought great joy to her life.
Survivors include five children and their spouses, Murlin and Mildred Bottlinger, Betty and Rudy Senger, Jane and Darman Wagner, all of Hamilton, Mona and Luther Smith of Herndon, Va. and Billie Katherine and Mike Looney of Henderson, Nev.; ten grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Paula Bailey of Burnet and Meta Braun of Hamilton; two sister-in-laws Opal Kelm of Austin and Leona Kelm of Hamilton.
She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents and two brothers.
