Rainey

NAPLES - Flore Rainey, 95, of Naples, died Sunday, March 18, 2001 in Naples.

Funeral services were held at St. Johns Catholic Church in Flatersdill, R.I.

Ms. Rainey was born March 11, 1906 in New Bedford, Mass. She was a member of the Catholic Church. She lived in Naples for the past 14 years and was a former resident of North Smithville, R.I.

She is survived by her daughter Florence Ledel of Forrestdale, R.I.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Robinson

PITTSBURG - Velma R. Robinson, 99, of Pittsburg, died Monday, March 19, 2001 at Pittsburg Nursing Center.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 21 at Erman Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Pittsburg. The Rev. Doyle Rust officiated. Interment was in Lafayette Cemetery in Camp County.

Mrs. Robinson was born Dec. 14, 1901 in Camp County. She was a life long resident of Camp County and was affiliated with Holly Springs Baptist Church. She was a housewife and a mother.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Verlon and Mary Robinson of Smyrna, Geor., Carroll and Mildred Robinson of Pittsburg; daughters Charlene Seale, Inez Peters, both of Pittsburg; brothers Henry Rumsey of Mount Pleasant, Floy Rumsey of Texarkana; sisters Novella Stracener of Pittsburg, Vanell Amos of Red Oak; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Elbert Robinson in 1977; parents George Washington Rumsey and Leola Roberts Rumsey.

Tompkins

John E. Tompkins, 82, of Mount Pleasant, died Friday, March 23, 2001 at Wadley Hospital in Texarkana.

Graveside services werel held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 27 at Belcher Cemetery in Talco under the direction of Curry-Welborn Funeral Home. Everett Logan Jr. officiated.

Mr. Tompkins was born March 3, 1919 in Beckville. He was a WWII veteran, serving as a private in the Army. He was an airplane mechanic for Southwest Airmotive and a member of Grand Prairie Baptist Church in Grand Prairie. Formerly of Grand Prairie, Mr. Tompkins lived in Mount Pleasant for 25 years.

He is survived by his wife Alvis Tompkins; daughters Connie Tompkins, Mary Garrett; grandchildren Toni Sides, Ralph Sides; great-grandchildren Melanie Riddles, Amanda Sides, Alexander Sides, Reghan Sides.

Washington

SULPHUR SPRINGS - Troas Washington, 69, of Sulphur Springs, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at Carriage House Manor.

Mr. Washington was the father of Harry Washington of Mount Pleasant.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 24 at Morning Chapel Baptist Church under the direction of Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home in Sulphur Springs. The Rev. Herb Spady officiated. military graveside services followed at Restlawn Memorial Park under the direction of the Hopkins County military Coalition. Pallbearers were Tommy Burton, Tommy Washington, Gerald Washington, Andre Washington, Ashley Washington, Billy Burney, Benjamin Askew and Tony Abercrombie.

Mr. Washington was born June 3, 1931 in Hopkins County, the son of George “G.C.” and Maudie Harrison Washington. He was a retired building contractor and barber. He was associated with the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness and the East Caney Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He is survived by his sons Donald Washington of Lafayette, La., Barry Washington of Carthage, Harry Washington of Mount Pleasant; daughter Jeanice Washington Johnson of Grand Prairie; grandchildren Tiffany Washington, Gregory Washington, Donald Washington II, Jerome Johnson, Lt. Noah O. Johnson, Latosha Petty, Everett Washington, Brianna Washington; three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandchild.

Wellborn

OMAHA - Audra Wellborn, 88, of Omaha, died Sunday, March 18, 2001 in Mount Pleasant.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 20 at Concord Baptist Church. The Rev. Nolan Richey officiated. Interment was in Concord Cemetery under the direction of Alexander Funeral Home.

Ms. Wellborn was born July 17, 1912 in Commerce. She was a former employee of Sears. She was a member of the Concord Baptist Church and a long time resident of Omaha.

She is survived by numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Concord Baptist Church Building Fund.

Andrews

John Waylon Andrews, 93, of Mount Pleasant, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002 at Villa Residential Care.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6 at Bates-Cooper Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. R.T. Blalock officiated. Interment was in Keith Cemetery in Cookville. Pallbearers were Mr. Andrews’ grandsons.

Mr. Andrews was born Feb. 2, 1908 in Cookville. He was a carpenter and farmer. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cookville and a lifelong memer of the Oddfellow Lodge.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law Harold Dean and Murriel Andrews of Naples, Elvis Lee and Becky Andrews of Evansville, Ind.; daughter-in-law Nona Andrews of Mount Pleasant; step-daughters Jean Stuart and Patsy Mobley, both of Wills Point; step-son Dr. J.E. Cogeswell of Lindale; brother Roy Lane (Huck) Andrews of Fair Oaks, Ind.; sister Wilma Hunt of Safford, Ariz.; special friend Opal Merritt of Cookville; numerous nieces and nephews; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents George Buford Andrews and Carrie Easley Andrews, and son J.W. Andrews.

Blalock

Frank Blalock, 82, of Mount Pleasant, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002 at Titus Regional Medical Center.

Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5 at Liberty Hill Cemetery under the direction of Curry-Welborn Funeral Home. Bro. Bob Griffith officiated.

Mr. Blalock was born Sept. 21, 1919 in Oklahoma, the son of Virgil Blalock and Iva Mae Savage. He was formerly employed with the ammunition plant Day Zimmerman. He was a member of Liberty Hill Missionary Baptist Church. He served in World War II and received a purple heart. He was a member of the VFW and DAV.

He is survived by his wife Ruth Blalock of Mount Pleasant; son and daughter-in-law Mickey and Rebecca Blalock of New Diana; son-in-law J.T. Wright of Mount Pleasant; daughters and sons-in-law Gayla and Robert Conner of Mount Pleasant, Donnita and Willie Conger of Dallas; daughter-in-law Nancy Blalock of Mount Pleasant; brothers Roscoe Blalock of Pennsylvania, Casey Blalock of Bonham; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sons Sherrill Blalock and Gayle Blalock; and daughter Frankie Sue Wright.

Booth

WINFIELD - Buna Booth, 92, of Winfield, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001 in Mount Pleasant.

Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2 at Winfield Cemetery under the direction of Harvey Funeral Home. The Rev. Mel Murphy officiated.

Mrs. Booth was born Feb. 6, 1909 in Franklin County, the daughter of Joel Hendrix and Daisy Pyron.

She is survived by her daughter Barbara Steffen of Winfield; brother Willard Cody of Marshall; grandchild David Steffen of Brandon, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Albert T. Booth in May of 1997.

Burnett

MOUNT VERNON - Lorayne Burnett, 98, of Mount Vernon, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001 in Mount Vernon.

Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2 at Weaver Cemetery under the direction of Harvey Funeral Home.

Mrs. Burnett was born April 3, 1903 in Grayson County.

She is survived by her children Ginger Rhoades of Mount Vernon, Jack Burnett of Hagansport, Linda Trantham of Mount Vernon and Mary Solomon of Houston; 16 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Chat C. Burnett in july of 1959.

Carson

Mount Pleasant native Jane Jegelky Carson, 63, of Celeste, died Dec. 31, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at the Church of Christ in Celeste under the direction of Coker-Mathews Funeral Home. Brother A.C. Quinn officiated. Graveside services were at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 2, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Mount Pleasant.

Mrs. Carson was born in Mount Pleasant on May 26, 1938, the daughter of Joseph E. Jegelky and Annie Pearl Fuquary. She married Thomas Lowell Carson in Dallas on May 8, 1957, Mrs. Carson was a bookkeeper. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Celeste.

She is survived by her son Kenneth Carson of Cooper; daughters Kathy Spoonemore of Celeste and Kay George of Farmersville; eight grandchildren; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and sister.

Clowes

Lela O. Clowes, 78, of Mount Pleasant, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001 at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler.

Memorial services were at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4 at Nevill’s Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Curry-Welborn Funeral Home. Bro. Glenn Griffith officiated.

Mrs. Clowes was born March 24, 1923 in Oklahoma. She was a housewife and a Baptist.

She is survived by her son William Leon Lanpher; step-son Eldon Clowes; daughter and son-in-law Lois and Merlin Twamley; four sisters; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Clowes; three brothers; and five sisters.
