Jesus Barrio Jr., 38, passed away May 20. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a long time resident of El Paso. He is survived by his wife Sonia Barrio, children — Jesus Barrio III, Natalia Barrio and Valeria Barrio — his mother Cruz Barrio, sisters Concepcion Barrio, Cristina Barrio-Salas, Rosa Maria Barrio-Carrasco, Isela Ortega and Olimpia Barrio. Burial was May 24 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Eleanor Louise Boyd, 79, passed away May 20. The longtime El Paso resident retired from the City of El Paso’s Parks and Recreation Department. She is survived by her sons John Hardin Boyd and Forrest Paul Boyd, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Interment was May 23 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Walter Robert Brown, 73, passed away May 18. He served in the Marine Corps for 27 years and moved to El Paso after retiring in 1972. He met and married his wife Henrietta Culver in La Paz, Bolivia, where he was serving as a Marine guard at the U.S. Embassy. He is survived his daughter Lucille Ann, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Interment was May 24 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors.

Alberto A. Chaparro, 70, died May 20. He was a UTEP graduate who served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife Juanita, children — Dahren, Mary Evanovich, Brenda James, David and Ken Samples, brother Daniel Chaparro, sister Teresa Gonzalez, 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Interment was at Williamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore.

Carl R. Cogar Sr., 79, passed away May 20. He was an Army veteran who served his country for 10 years with the 17th and 82nd Airborne during WW II where he was awarded the Bronze Star. He was an art teacher in El Paso, Deming and Las Cruces where he was the owner of El Portal. He was also an accomplished violinmaker and avid model airplane maker and flyer who loved the outdoors. He is survived by his wife Helen Cogar, children — Carl R. Cogar Jr. and wife Dr. Virginia Cogar, Daniel H. Cogar and wife Vickie, Margaret Ella True and husband Windell, Phyllis Nan Chauncey and husband Gordon and Jean H. Trujillo and husband Anthony. He has 18 surviving grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A reflection of his life took place May 25 at First Presbyterian Church.

Melvin Andrew Elkins, 100, passed away May 19. He was a retired contractor and minister. He is survived by two brothers, Lonnie Elkins and Bob Elkins and a sister Garnet Reaves. His surviving children are Betty Olson, Virginia Honea, Billie Lucke, Melvin Elkins and Joe Elkins, plus 14 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. Entombment was May 23 at Evergreen East Mausoleum.

Jaime “Rabano” Herrera, 66, passed away May 23. He attended the Universidad Del Tech de Monterrey where his major was business administration. In 1960 he was named coach to the Mexican Olympic basketball team in Rome where they made it to the semi-finals. At age 25, he was among the youngest to ever coach an Olympic team. He was an avid sportsman, excelling and setting records in shot put, javelin, basketball and golf. He was retired from his many business interests. He is survived by his children — Patricia Rockoff, Jaime Herrera Jr., Felisa Elias and Carlos Herrera — and six grandchildren. Inurnment was May 26 at Memory Gardens of the Valley Cemetery.

Robert T. Hoover, 78, passed away June 4. He was a WWII veteran who then joined his father’s cotton merchandising firm, R.T. Hoover & Co. He was active in the community, serving on the boards of United Way, the El Paso Chamber of Commerce, St. Clement’s Parish School and Providence Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his wife Sandra Schwartz Hoover and children — Robert T. Hoover III, Betsy Hoover Miller, David Hoover, Doak Hoover and Ruth Hoover Sprout. His surviving grandchildren include Nicole Hoover, Ryan Hoover, Shelly Hoover, James Robert Sprout, Megan Sprout, William David Sprout, Kelsey Sprout, Paul Doak Sergent, Holland Sergent, Steven Chadwick Hoover, Elliott Hoover and Sarah Hoover. Services were June 7 at Pro-Cathedral Church of St. Clement. The family suggested that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Pro-Cathedral Church of St. Clement, Hospice VNA/Circle of Hope or Alzheimer’s Association.

William Hopper, 75, passed away May 22. He was a longtime resident of El Paso retired from the U.S. Army as a CW3 after 32 years of service. He was a veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam and was a member of American Legion Post #58, a life member of VFW #8919 and Voiture Locale Post #605 for 25 years and a past member of the El Paso Radio Controllers Club. He is survived by son Michael Hopper and wife Jeanne and granddaughter Mika Hopper. Interment was May 24 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with full military honors accorded.

Cecil Ann Kenneson, 85, passed away May 24. She is survived by her husband Claud Kenneson, son Claud Kenneson Jr., granddaughter Sharon Flores and grandson John Kenneson. No services were planned.

Manuel C. Lopez, 71, passed away May 17. He was a longtime resident of El Paso and was a member of the Catholic Church. He had retired from the City of El Paso. He is survived by his wife Irma Lopez, children — Hector Manuel, Aldo, Abel Lopez, Agueda Nuñez, Aida Lopez, Aide Dominguez and Annette Quiñonez — 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Interment was May 21 at Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Charles F. Lukens Jr., 71, passed away May 16. He was a resident of El Paso for 43 years and a Mason with Lodge #475 in Swinefort, Germany. He was an avid golfer and was on the board of directors of George Underwood Golf Course at Fort Bliss. He was in the Army for 22 years, serving in the Korean War and in Germany. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Edith M. Lukens, children — Fred and wife Diane Lukens III and Tia Marie and husband Brad Higgs — and seven grandchildren. Burial was May 21 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions were requested to American Diabetes Association.

Agripina Del Rio Magaña, 68, passed away May 20. She was a homemaker and a 50-year resident of El Paso. She is survived by husband Pablo Magaña, children — Paul Magaña, Hugo Magaña, George Magaña, Oscar Magaña, Henry Magaña, Danny Magaña, Esther Archut, Nancy Turner, Elisa Kerin, Norma Theit and Alice Lara — 31 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Interment was May 22 at Evergreen East Cemetery.

James H. (Jack) Mecklin passed away May 19. He moved to El Paso in 1976 and continued to be as active as he had been in Marfa, Texas. He was an active member of Bethany Christian Church, the Eastside YMCA and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was an avid outdoorsman ,enjoying camping, boating and fishing. He is survived by his sons Donald Mecklin and wife Katharine Mecklin and Ronald Mecklin, five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services took place on May 23 and burial followed in Marfa.

Juan S. Martinez, 82, passed away May 19. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was a resident of El Paso for 35 years. He is survived by his wife Amalia Martinez, son John V. Martinez and two grandchildren. Interment was May 25 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors.

Jesus Roberto Morales, 45, passed away May 22. He was a former employee at W.R. Weaver Scopes, Fort Bliss-Animal Control and Beltran’s Security before moving to Florida, where he became an honor marksman State Trooper of the Florida Highway Patrol until his retirement. He is survived by his wife Stephenie Morales, daughter Julie E. Morales and siblings — Olga M. Castañeda, Delia M. and husband Mario Sanchez, Ezequiel and wife Hiromi, Alfonso and wife Maria Esther and Eduardo and wife Andrea Morales. Burial was May 25 at Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Antonia (Tonita) Maynard passed away May 18. She was a resident of El Paso for 65 years. She is survived by her children Carlos Maynard, Edward V. Maynard, Henry Maynard Jr., Frances M. Hernandez and Virginia Maynard, 24 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. No services took place after cremation.

Maj. Roy E. Moore (Ret) USA, 83, passed away May 21. He was a WWII and Korean veteran. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth (Lib) W. Moore, son and daughter-in-law Roy E. and Christie L. Moore II and two grandchildren, Jennifer R. Moore, El Paso and Bonnie Alyssa Moore. Interment was May 25 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors.

Porfirio Ortega, 69, passed away May 20. The lifelong El Paso resident was a Korean War veteran who served in the Fort Bliss Fire Department. He is survived by brother Alfredo Ortega, sisters Soledad Banuelos, Guadalupe Ortega and Genoveva Toledo. Burial was May 25 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Jesse “Packey” Parker, 70, passed away May 18. He was a veteran of the Armed Forces and retired from Southern Pacific Railroad after 41 years. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Laura, children — Jessie, Joey and Mike — six grandchildren, aunt Gladis Johnson, cousins Sunny and wife Etta Brown and his best friend and longtime co- worker Joe Birch. A memorial service took place May 24 at Fort Bliss Cemetery.

Josephine Parmelee, 95, passed away May 21. She and her late husband of 65 years, Seldon H. Parmelee, owned Parmelee Radio and Sound in El Paso. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of El Paso since 1930 and remained an active member. She had worked on the staff of the Children’s Ministry for 47 years and was a member of the Pilot Club of El Paso. She is survived by her son Selden H. Parmelee Jr., sister Mary S. Wilson, nieces Pat Ault, Linda Carter and Cathy Zeiler. Interment was May 26 at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Cipriano G. Parra, 83, passed away May 17. He was a lifelong resident of San Elizario and was a member of San Elizario Catholic Church. He was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Army and was a life member with the VFW No. 6388 and was retired from civil service with 30 years of service. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ramona Parra, children — Victor Parra and wife Patricia, Patricio Parra, Elodia May and husband T.D., Margie Parra and husband Marino, and Rita Rubio and husband Erik — nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Burial was May 21 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to San Elizario Mission in his memory.

Dereke Damount Planter, 43, passed away May 16. He served in the Gulf War and had been a corrections officer since 1992. He is survived by his mother Thelma Banks, son Dereke D. Planter Jr., daughter Dewanna D. Planter and brother Pierre Planter. Burial was May 21 at Beulah, MD.

Emma Leola Huffman Robinson, 81, passed away May 23. She is survived by daughter, Nancy Cole-Wofford and son-in-law Gary, son David (Tony) Robinson and daughter-in-law Linda. Her surviving grandchildren are Melonie Fernandez and husband Rowdy, Todd Cole and wife Rhonda, Dennis Robinson, Amy Robinson Caudillo and husband Charlie, J.P. Johnson and wife Kathy, plus 11 great-grandchildren. Graveside service was May 25 at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Tina Shewmaker Clementina Maria Alba Elena de Bernard passed away May 22. She was born in Salerno, Italy and served as an inspector in the provincial government of Terra de Lavoro with responsibility for distribution of relief supplies in 67 villages. She came to El Paso in 1947 and served as the rehearsal pianist for Ballet El Paso. She is survived by her husband Dwight, children — James Shewmaker and Suzy Shewmaker — four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Henry Cicero “Blackie” Sitton, 82, passed away May 19. He served in the Navy during WWII and was a mechanic who owned “Blackie’s Garage” in the Upper Valley in the 1950’s. He also served as the chief of the Upper Valley Volunteer Fire Department. After closing the garage, he worked for the University of Texas teaching auto mechanics then became a representative and instructor for General Motors. He is survived by his sons, Jim H. Sitton and wife Mary Ann and Nick B. Sitton and wife Ann, four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Burial was May 22 at Memory Gardens of the Valley Cemetery in Santa Teresa, NM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested contributions to the James Paul Sitton Memorial Fund c/o El Paso Community Foundation, P.O. Box 272, El Paso, TX 79943-0272 .

Juana “Jane” G. Vera, 75, passed away May 16. She was a resident of El Paso for 43 years and was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church and a volunteer with Northgate Christian Church. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Wallace I. Vera, children — Dr. Robert W. Vera and Ralph T. Vera and wife Elisa — four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Burial was May 23 at Restlawn Memorial Park.

Helen Sarah Walker, 21, passed away May 19. She graduated from Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas, where she was an honor student and a member of the Drama Club. She had completed her junior year at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., where she was majoring in Technical Theater and Computer Science and minoring in American Sign Language. She was an honor student and earned many awards and scholarships, particularly in stage management and production. She is survived by her parents Michael and Theresa Walker, brother Aaron Walker, paternal grandfather Lewis Walker, maternal grandparents Francis and Maria Elena Flood, great aunts Sister Mary Kathleen Flood and Isabel Flood, and numerous other relatives. Burial was private in Sugar Land and the family suggested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to Indiana University’s Theater Department.
