Esteban Avalos, 45, passed away June 15. He had been a lifelong resident of El Paso, was a member of the Catholic Church and had been employed by the El Paso Sanitation Department. He is survived by his wife Elvira Avalos, children — Lorraine Avalos, Michael Avalos, Cindy Avalos, Daisey Avalos and Steven Avalos — father Manuel Avalos and siblings — Manuel Avalos, Albert Avalos, Esther Urbalejos, Ida Ramirez, Molley Quijas and Rachel Avalos. Interment was June17 at Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Howard Burnham, 63, passed away June 18. Burnham was active in the El Paso community and was a member of Temple Mount Sinai. He was an administrator for the School for Educational Enrichment. He had served as the executive director of the El Paso Jewish Federation, president of the Downtown Lions Club, president of Planned Parenthood and Trustee for Burnham Wood Charter School. He also worked in Jewish Communal Services in Los Angeles, Buffalo and New Orleans. He is survived by his wife Iris Burnham, son Leonard Burnham, daughter Esther Burnham and brother Alan Burnham. Interment was June 20 at Mount Sinai Cemetery.

David Carlos Camacho, 44, passed away June 14. He was a lifelong resident of El Paso who graduated from El Paso High School in 1975, attended college in New Mexico and was a former manager of a health spa. He is survived by his mother Domitila Camacho, siblings — Jay Camacho, Carol Giron and her husband David, Norma Camacho and husband Eric, Nadine Cruz and husband Jose and Lulie Esquivel and husband Edward — nephews Mathew, J.C. and Julien and nieces Venessa, Victoria and Catrina. A memorial service took place June 18.

Jesse David Crawford Castañeda, 22, passed away June 21. He was a lifelong resident of El Paso and a pharmacy tech trainee at Trawood Pharmacy. He is survived by his parents Joseph and Vickie Loessel, grandparents O. Emi-lio and Alicia Castañeda and grandmother Valeria Van Groll. Interment was June 26 at Mount Carmel Cemetery. The family requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made to a favorite charity.

Dr. Clarence Sharp Cook, 83, passed away June 12. He came to El Paso in 1970 to head UTEP’s Physics Department where an endowed chair remains in his honor. After his retirement, he remained active in the community, including helping to start El Paso’s public television station and working to help improve nuclear medicine facilities in the city. He was a member of Sigma XI, Phi Beta Kappa, American Physical Society, American Association of Physics Teachers and the University Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife Marian Waring Cook, his daughter Sherma Cook, his son and his son’s family, Wayne, Diana, Matthew and Aaron Cook. Graveside service was June 15 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery and a memorial service took place June 16 at University Presbyterian Church.

Porfiria “Nana” L. Giron, 91, passed away June 15. She was a lifelong resident of El Paso and was a member of the Catholic Church. She is survived by her children — Jose Giron and wife Irma, Antonio Giron and wife Lily, Oscar Giron and wife Mary, Maria Elena G. Turrieta and husband Jose, Margarita G. Siegel and husband Brett — 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Interment was June 20 in Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Margarito Guzman, 82, passed away June 15. He was a longtime resident of El Paso and a member of the Catholic Church. He retired from Phelps Dodge Copper Refinery after 35 years of service. He is survived by his son Miguel Guzman, daughter Irma Guzman, five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren,two brothers and three sisters. Interment was June 18 at Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Mary Gertrude Lynch, 75, passed away June 20. She was a graduate of Hotel Dieu School of Nursing. After leaving nursing, she remained active in the Hotel Dieu School of Nursing Association and in the Texas Parents Teachers Association. She is survived by daughters Nancy Lynch and Kathy Hornsberger, sons-in-law Roderick Gatehouse and Bobby Hornsberger, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Interment was June 25 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Manuel Salamanca, 86, passed away June 11. He was a longtime resident of El Paso and a member of the Catholic Church who retired from Phelps Dodge Refining Corp. He is survived by his wife Dolores Garcia Salamanca, children Eloy Salamanca and Eric Salamanca, grandchildren Kim-berly Moreira, Kelly Sala-manca, Erica Salamanca and Danielle Salamanca, and four great-grandchildren. Interment was June 13 at Evergreen East Cemetery.

Jerry Lee Smothers passed away June 9. He moved to El Paso with his family as a young boy and was a graduate of Burgess High School. He was in the construction business for many years in El Paso and elsewhere. He is survived by his brother Gene L. Smothers and children Robin Baadsgaard and James Smothers. Funeral services were private and memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of El Paso.

Alfredo (Fred) Solis, 46, passed away June 5. He served in the U.S. Navy, recently completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Phoenix and was in management at Burlington Coat Factory. He was an avid outdoorsman and is survived by his wife Guadalupe, children — Alfredo II, Amy Solis and Adrianna Pichardo — and siblings Armando Solis, Carlos Solis, Priscilla Apodaca and Martha Solis. Interment was June 11 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Lana D. Summer, 33, passed away June 10. She was a long time resident of El Paso who graduated from Eastwood High School and was a tax auditor for the Texas Work Force Commission. She is survived by her parents Larry Summers and Martha Summers, her son Marcus Huerta, her brothers Kyle Summers, Mark Summers and Michael Summers, her aunt Reecia Pigman and her uncle Charles Johnson. Burial was June 13 at Evergreen East Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested that that donations be made to the Kidney Foundation.

David Vinson Swear-ingen, 77, passed away June 9. He served as a deacon of First Baptist Church of El Paso and Mission Service Corps, was mayor pro tem of Horizon City and retired from the U.S. Army and Southwestern Bell. He is survived by his wife Rachel, children — Suzanne and Larry Johnson and David Barry and Hayle Swearingen — grandchildren Michael David Johnson, Danny Johnson, Jennifer John-son and Kayla Swearingen. In-terment was June 13 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church Foundation.

James Thomas Vincent, 48, passed away June 9. He received his bachelor’s degree at UTEP and taught at Austin and Coronado High Schools. At Coronado, he served as Science Department chairman, Aca-demic Decathlon and High Q coach and was a technology resource facilitator. He is survived by his wife Joanne, his son and daughter-in-law Ben and Gaby Vincent of El Paso, brother John Vincent and sisters Mary Ann and Nancy. Graveside services were June 13 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made at the Animal Rescue League, 725 La Junta, in Canutillo, Texas.

Basilio V. Carrasco, 83, passed away July 4. He was a resident of El Paso for 50 years and was employed by the City of El Paso in the Sanitation Department. He is survived by his wife Margarita B. Carrasco, children — Evelia Carrasco, Luz E. Nieves, Bertha A. Valdez, Margarita Carrasco, Celia Mendoza, Josefina Carrasco and Mario Carrasco — 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Interment was July 9 at Evergreen East Cemetery.

Maria A. Escobar, 90, passed away July 8. She was a lifetime member of the Catholic Church who co-founded Carlos Escobar Dairy with her late husband. She is survived by her children — Carlos R. Escobar and wife Evangelina, Juan M. Escobar and wife Magda, Pablo Escobar and wife Bertha, Hector J. Escobar and wife Nellie, David Escobar and wife Lorna, Juanita Strons and husband William, Hilda Rasor and husband Tom, and Socorro Alarcon and husband Arthur — 37 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Interment was July 13 at Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Marina S. Flores, 59, passed away June 30. She was a resident of El Paso for 25 years and was a mail room supervisor for the El Paso Independent School District. She is survived by her sons, Edward Vidal and John Vidal, one grandchild, parents Alfredo and Elvira Flores and siblings — Alfredo Flores Jr., Victor Flores, Jesus Flores, Rosa E. Gomez, Elvira Flores and Frances Lozano. Interment was July 6 at Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Elva F. Garibay Valerde, age 76, passed away July 6. She was a lifelong resident of El Paso who retired from the Army Air Force Exchange Services after 30 years of service as a PX store manager. She is survived by her children — Ernest R. Valverde, Edward Valverde, Carmen Salgado and Elvia E. Blasch — seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A private burial took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

George Garza Sr., 82, passed away July 4. He was a lifelong resident of El Paso and retired from Phelps Dodge Copper Refinery after 43 years of service. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and a 26-year member of the Sun Country Trail Riders. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Esther E. Garza, children — George Garza Jr. and wife Carmen and Robert Garza and wife Bertha — grandchildren Michael K. Garza, Suzanne Garza Gutierrez, Kristine M., Laura M., John D. Garza and Cynthia Garza Ramirez, and great-grandchildren Steven Gutierrez, Nicolas Gutierrez and Samantha Garza. Burial was July 6 at Mount Carmel Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Blood Services, 2325 Pershing, El Paso, TX 79903.

Dr. John Peter Moody, 66, passed away July 9. He served in the Army Medical Corps, was stationed in Vietnam and was in private practice in El Paso from 1969 to 1990. He was on the active staff of several hospitals and served as chief of the OB/GYN service of Providence Memorial Hospital on several occasions and was chief of the medical staff of Providence Memorial Hospital in 1983. He was active in the Local International City ACBL Bridge Club 159, and was also active in the Southwest International Personal Computer Club. He is survived by his wife Linda, his mother Edna Moody, children — Cindy Williams, John D. and James C. Moody — grandchildren Stephanie and Wesley Bean, Jessica, Cassandra and J.D. Moody and Jamie Moody, brother Bill Moody and sister Margaret Moody. The family received friends after his cremation on July 18. In lieu of flowers, the family requested that memorial contributions could be made to Planned Parenthood of El Paso.

Ruby Fay Newman, 37, passed away July 2. She was a 1982 graduate of Andress High School and a member of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls Assembly No. 4 and Order of the Eastern Star, Pleiades Chapter No 620. She also was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Yucca Post 8919. She is survived by her mother Patricia Newman, brother Douglas Newman, friend Willy Kebschull and her four dogs – Shasta, Simon, Sheba and Sparky. Memorial Services were July 10 at Hillcrest Funeral Home.

Jose Yglesias Ramirez, 79, passed away June 29. He was a resident of El Paso for the past 60 years. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and retired from civil service at White Sands Missile Range and the Texas National Guard after 30 years of service. He is survived by his children — Clotilde Ramirez O’Hare, Carmen C. Ramirez Kaplan, Socorro Ramirez Williams, Jose Antonio Ramirez, Miguel E. Ramirez and David L. Ramirez — six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Interment was July 3 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with full military honors. Kathy Jo Simpson, 47, passed away July 4. She graduated from Bel Air High School in 1971 and earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UTEP. She opened the Glen Cove Elementary School in 1978 as the school librarian where she helped thousands of children discover the joys of reading for the past 23 years. She was named the school’s 1993 Teacher of the Year. She is survived by her husband Alan E. Simpson, sister Kaye V. Barnett and husband Tom, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and her beloved dogs Pepper and Bear. Funeral services were July 11 at Martin Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations were requested in her name to the American Heart Association.

Dr. Alistair Sinclair, 87, passed away July 12. He received his theological education at Dallas Theological Seminary and was ordained to the ministry of the Cumberland Presbyterian denomination for more than 60 years. He served as a chaplain in the United States Army with 24 years of service in the Army Reserve, the National Guard and on active duty serving during World War II, Korean War, the Vietname War and retired as a lieutenant colonel. He served several pastorates within the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and as voluntary chaplain with Hospice of El Paso for more than 10 years. He is survived by his wife Margaret, son William P. Sinclair and daughter-in-law Jean, and grandchildren Rosslyn and Catherine Day. Interment was July 16 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Pebble Hills Presbyterian Church or Hospice of El Paso, 3901 N. Mesa, Suite 400, El Paso, TX 79902.

Emily Thompson, 94, passed away June 30. She had been a resident of El Paso since 1997 and is survived by her children — George Otho Thompson Jr., Bruce Allan Thompson, Beverly Ellen Thompson and Penelope Ann Hamlin — 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Graveside service took place in Thompson Cemetery in Bluffton, Ohio.

C. Richard “Dick” Todd, 62, passed away July 11. He worked 35 years for RCA/ Thomson Consumer Electronics, which brought him to El Paso. He is survived by his wife Christine S. Montgomery, mother Madeline Todd, children — Lorrilly Chavira, Veronica Navarrette and husband Isaias, Amanda Chavira, Chris Todd, Cindy Pierce, Donna Pierce and Mark Pierce, Lisa Todd and Charlene Todd — and many grandchildren. Burial was July 16 at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions were requested to: American Heart Association, 233 E. Mesa St., El Paso, TX. 79912 or to the American Cancer Society 909 E. San Antonio El Paso, TX. 79901.

She was a lifetime Fabens resident and is survived by one her children —Gloria Serna and husband Miguel, Alfonso Velarde Jr. and wife Yolanda, Manuel Velarde and wife Mony, Marcos Velarde and wife Yvonne, and Juan M. Velarde and wife Bertha — brother Juan T. Morales, 16 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Interment was July 7 at Fabens Catholic Cemetery.

Robert Whitfield Dickerson, 52, passed away June 27. He was a retired minister and is survived by his wife Carol A. Dickerson, children — Robert J. Dickerson, James A. Dickerson and Kathleen A. Dickerson. A memorial service took place on June 30. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Guy C. “Woody” Woodruff, 78, passed away June 29. A longtime resident of El Paso, he served in the South Pacific in WWII and then completed his education with bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Sul Ross State College. He had a long career in teaching, coaching and administration and had an impact on El Paso and surrounding area school districts. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Anna Gene, children — Guy, Ted, Laura, Susan, Peter and Lesley — 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A memorial service took place July 2. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
