Elena G. De Taboada
Elena G. De Taboada left a legacy of love and devotion when she passed away on April 5. Her love and charitable acts knew no boundaries as she shared her talents and care for people on both sides of the border.
The 87-year-old was a longtime resident of El Paso and Juarez and was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. She grew up in Sunset Heights and attended the Palmore Business School.
She worked at El Continental before marrying her husband of 58 years, Pedro Taboada Rey. Upon her marriage in 1943, she moved to Juarez where she became active in her community and the Women’s Catholic Movement Organization even as she raised her two children: Pedro J. Taboada and Luz Elena Taboada.
She became admired for her calming grace as well as the loving care she gave to her in-laws and family. Her father-in-law and sister-in-law joined her household when her mother-in-law passed away in the ‘50s. When her husband’s brother became a widower in 1966, he too joined the household.
This graciousness led her being nicknamed “Mama Helen.”
By the time her family moved to El Paso in 1981, her son and his wife Lucila had added four grandchildren to the family: Pedro, Liliana, Lucila and Sandra.
Mama Helen became active in Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and continued to tend to her family, which had added five grandchildren: Jesus Manuel, Tiffany, Savannah, Sofie and Sarafina.
In eulogies, her grandchildren thanked their grandmother and great-grandmother for showing them how to truly love. Her grown children both thanked her for the faith that she lived by and instilled in them by sending them to parochial schools. They also expressed appreciation for her beauty, inside and out.
Her son said that he especially was grateful for her teaching him the importance of being versed in two languages.
“She had us memorize Scripture in English even if we didn’t understand and told us that eventually we would understand and would be glad,” her son said. “And now that’s what I do with and tell my students.”
Luz Elena, who is director of Workforce Development for El Paso Community College, appreciated that though her mother was deeply ingrained in tradition, she vowed that her daughter wouldn’t prevented from following her heart’s desires.
Mama Helen greatly enjoyed her daughter’s participation in basketball at Loretto High School and later in Spanish language theater with Teatro Los Pobres. She even went on to do some professional work in commercials herself.
Friends of the family recalled the tasty, healthy food Mama Helen served as she gathered people of all ages around her diningroom table. Many a discussion on topics of the day took place at that table that would be cleared after dinner for the card games that she and her family shared nightly.
“Purely by watching her and sensing her sincerity, I know that Elena has been a religious person, extraordinaire,” family friend Bill Winkley said as he stood at the podium during her rosary on April 9. “She lived her religion, both in its form and in its essence. Mass was a vital part of her week, prayers, of her day. Always quietly and humbly, she conducted the rituals of her faith. More importantly, she lived its tenets. Those of us privileged to be around her sensed this holiness and came to appreciate the potential for enriching our own lives through greater attention to our own spirituality.”
She was buried April 10 at Evergreen East Cemetery. The family requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Amigo Kidney Foundation, 1225 E. Cliff, Suite. D, El Paso, TX 79902.
