William “Willie” Lozano passed away Thursday, March 14, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Norma Rodriguez; his sons, William Lozano, Jr., Jesse Rodriguez and Angel Rodriguez; his mother, Maria Elena Lozano; brother Paul A. Castillo; sisters Diana Cazares, Sofia Gonzales and Sandy Castillo; nephews, David Cazares, Isaiah Cazarez, Mark Castillo; and a niece, Isabella Gonzales. Interment took place at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Jesus M. Franco passed away Friday, March 15, 2002. He was a retired civil service worker, a veteran, and a lifetime resident of Fort Hancock, Texas. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Diana Franco. He is survived by his wife, Maria Franco; his son, Jesus M. Franco, Jr.; his daughter, Patricia Whitney; his grandson, Ryan Franco; two sisters, Angie Lujan and Elena Chavez; his brothers: Ruben Franco, Juan Franco, Eduardo Franco and Jose Guadalupe Franco. Interment took place in Fort Hancock Cemetery with military honors.

Arthur C. 'Ace' Woodburn, 88, died Friday (March 8) in EI Paso, where he had resided since 1998. He graduated from Texas Tech College (Texas Tech University) in 1933 and received his master’s from the University of New Mexico in 1940. He also studied electrical engineering and graduate studies in education at New Mexico College of A & M (New Mexico State University) and the University of Colorado. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Delta Kappa. He began his 40-year career in New Mexico education with teaching/coaching positions in Rogers and Endee; then became elementary principal in Tatum. His high school principalships were in Santa Rosa, Hurley and Alamogordo. He served as assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction in Alamogordo and then retired from education after serving six years as Superintendent of Schools in Gallup, McKinley County, Public Schools. During his career he was an active member of many education associations and served as president of NM Council for Improvement of Education, President of NM Association of Secondary School Principals, President of NM Schoolmasters, and President of New Mexico Education Association.
He served in the United States Navy during Wor1d War II and remained in the Naval Reserve for many years. He was a deacon, deacon chairman, Sunday school teacher and superintendent, pastor search committee chairman, personnel committee chairman and on numerous other committees at First Baptist Churches in Alamogordo, Gallup, and Las Cruces. He served as Baptist Area Board Treasurer and on the Executive Board of the Baptist Convention of NM, and as Trustee of First Baptist Church, Las Cruces more than 20 years and as a member of the Board of Trustees of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Mo. from 1983-1993 (Chairman of the Finance Committee from 1987-1993). He was a lifetime member and past president of the local chapter of Lions Club International. He served as chairman of the Las Cruces Committee on Aging for six years and as a volunteer income tax assistant for 11 years. He served on the local and state levels in the National Retired Teachers Association and the American Association of Retired Persons. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, E. Floriene Shifflette Woodburn; his parents; and brothers Albert, and Horace Woodburn. He is survived by his daughter, Jenet Floriene Bowman and her husband, J. W. Bowman; grandchildren Janna Lynn Bowman and Jason W. Bowman; brother Alvin Woodburn and his wife Etta Woodburn; sisters Stella Davis and Jean Henderson; sisters-in-law Greta Woodburn and June Woodburn; and 12 nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 106 S. Miranda, Las Cruces, NM 88005.

MSgt. Ret. Fred R. Runce passed away Tuesday (March 19). He served in the United States Air Force beginning in 1939, and was present at the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was an active member of The Pearl Harbor Survivors, serving as president for two terms. He was injured in the Korean War. As an avid history buff, he was active in the El Paso Historical Society and the El Paso Corral of the Westerners, where he held various offices. He is survived by his daughters, Robin Burnette, Cindy Hammond and her husband Frank Hammond, Richelle Seat and her husband William Seat, Terrie Todd and her husband Alex Todd, Jo Runce and Bill Holik; 11 grandchildren: Fred Moses, Tim Burnette, sherri Hammond, Tonia Crowley, Chris Seat, Tony Seat, dustin Hammond, Nick Heincy, Jonquil Goode, Kimberlee Heincy and Zak Goode; great-grandchildren Kahlea Hammond and Byron Burnette. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to any veterans organization.

Charles Franklin Hurst passed away Tuesday (March 19). A veteran of WWII, he retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1981. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, E. Louise Powe. He is survived by his daughters, Karen Sherwood-Willett and her husband George Sherwood-Willett, Lucy Ann Bates and her husband Leroy Bates; five grandchildren: Charles Floyd Sherwood, Paul Donnelly, Shelley Sherwood-Sorenson, LuAnn Baker and Loretta Casart; five great-grandchildren: Justin Sherwood, Sydney Sorenson, Quincy Sorenson, Sarah Baker and Spenser Casart; his sister Lucybeth Janes; and nephews Daryl James and Tim Janes; sisters- and brothers-in-law Lucy Powe, Mayme Duncan, Bob and nancy Powe, Ruth and Gordon Mooney, Myrthe Powe, and many nieces and nephews. Marie Caroll Murray passed away Monday, March 18. She was a longtime resident of El Paso, and served in the Women’s Army Corps during WWII. Among her decorations and citations were the WWII Victory Medal, the American Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, a WAAC Service Ribbon, and the the European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Murray. She is survived by her children, Michael Murray, Patrick Murray and Mary K. Aguirre; and four grandchildren. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, with military honors.

Evelyn N. (Caldwell) Larson passed away Wednesday, March 27. A longtime El Paso resident, she worked as a civil servant for 33 years, completing her career at Fort Bliss as a technical editor. She served on the board of directors of the northeast YMCA, was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for 39 years, and a member of the UTEP Women’s Auxiliary. She was also a life member of the Women’s Department of the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce and served as 1997 chairman-director, responsible for promoting tourism and economic development of the “Star City.” She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Ret. Col. Gale L. (Bud) Larson; her son and daughter-in-law, Patrick Larson and Gabriela Linam; her daughter Tisha Onick; her grand-daughters Carrie Onick, Amy Onick and Sandra Casas Calles; her step-children, Karen Grimm and her husband Michael Grimm, Linda Johnson and her husband Kelly Goudielock and their children Geneva and Vanessa, Tom Larson and his wife Sherry Larson, and their daughter Kimberly. Donald A. Shearer passed away Sunday, March 31. A longtime El Paso resident, he was the coordinator of the Plaza Theatre Organ project for the El Paso Community Foundation. He played the organ in the Plaza Theatre from 1960 to 1963. He served as the organist for St. Patrick’s Cathedral for 20 years, and for St. Luke’s Catholic Church for 5 years. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mildred Shearer; his son Mark D. Shearer and wife Pamela Shearer; his daughter Karen Marie Hernandez and husband Joseph Andrew Hernandez; his sister, Marie Small; his grandson, Colin James Davis; and many nieces and nephews. Interment with full military honors took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of El Paso.

Angelita N. Ramirez passed away Friday, March 29. A lifelong resident of El Paso, she served her country during World War II by working for Douglas Aircraft as a “Rosie the Riveter.” She was preceded in death by her husband, Victoriano Ramirez, and is survived by her son, Victor Ramirez; her daughters Virginia Ramirez, Gloria R. Juarez, Stella R. De la Cruz and Ofelia R. Strickland; ten grandchildren; brothers Tomas Nevarez and Lorenzo Nevarez; and her sister, Chloe Navarro. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Pauline Weber passed away Wednesday, March 27. She was a longtime resident of El Paso, and was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin C. Weber, and her sister, Elizabeth Stevenson. She is survived by her sisters, Hattie E. Huston and Minnie Rose; her nieces, Elizabeth Nelson, Bertie Douchouquette and Laureen Cathey; and her nephews Robert Huston and Curtis Stevenson. Guidry passed away Sunday, March 24. She had been employed for eight years by the University of Texas at El Paso as Executive Secretary in the art department, and devoted her time to children’s advocacy programs in the arts and church organizations, including involvement in the children’s theatrical organization Kids-N-Co. She is survived by her husband, Robert Guidry; her mother, Darlene M. Schumm; her son, Jeremy Guidry; her daughter, Jennifer Guidry; niece Tracy Harris; brothers Reuben Harris, and Patrick Harris and his wife Mary Kay Harris; aunts Patricia Clanton and her husband John Clanton, and Elvira C. Hurley. Interment took place at Restlawn Memorial Park.

Rev. Cecil C. Kelley passed away Thursday, March 28. A resident of El Paso for 41 years, he retired as a SFC from the United States Army, serving in World War II and in the Korean War. He was a volunteer with the American Red Cross, a security guard for 15 years, and a very dedicated minister of Unity Missionary Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Gustava Kelley. Interment took place in Fort Bliss National Cemetery, with full military honors.

David C. Neely passed away Saturday, March 30. A resident of El Paso for 62 years, he retired from Paden Construction, was a member of the Carpenters and Joiners local union #425 of America for over 50 years and a retired elder with the Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Alta Mae Neely; his children: Perry Joe Neely and his wife Shirley Neely, Roy Glenn Neely and Harold Gray Neely; grandchildren: Kathryn Hunter, Gregory Neely, Michael Neely, Douglas Neely and Gary Neely; three great-great-grandchildren; and his sister, Hazel Parrish.

Lillian Lazovick passed away Sunday, March 31. She was born in New York, and was a longtime resident of El Paso. She volunteered in public broadcasting and became the Financial Director of KCOS before her retirement. She is survived by her husband, Paul Lazovick; her sister, Faye Spinner; her children, Ellen Weingarten and Steven Weingarten, Bonnie Kasner and Marc Kasner, Iva Hesse and Jim Hesse, Glen Lazovick and Debbie Lazovick and Jill Steinberg and Bill Steinberg; 11 grandchildren and 2 greatgrandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the El Paso Alzheimer’s Association or the Hospice of the Visiting Nurses Association of El Paso.

Doris A. Ryan passed away Friday, March 29. She was a retired vice presisdent at the original State National Bank, and was the bank’s first female officer. Born in Quebec, she lived in El Paso for over 50 years. She was active in charitable work, including the Salvation Army, the El Paso Lighthouse for the Blind, and the Soroptimist Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Ryan, and is survived by her sister, Muriel F. Flavelle; her niece Dana Flavelle; nephew Douglas Flavelle; her great-nephew Stewart; and her great-nieces Genevieve, Grace and Olivia. Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association.

Sidney “Tim” Swartz passed away Saturday, April 6. He had lived in El Paso for 40 years. He was a retired chemist and devoted time to volunteer activities for Southwestern General Hospital with his wife, Amy, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughters, Jackie Feigan and Lisse Wukelich; his son. Dr. Harold M. Swartz; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Leonard Franklin Wager (Capt. Ret.) passed away Thursday, April 4. He was in the United States Army for 23 years, serving in WWII and the Korean War. During WWII, he was awarded three Purple Hearts, one Silver Star and two Bronze Stars. He retired as a radar technician from the Civil Service, and was instrumental in beginning the Hercules missile system at Fort Bliss. He is survived by his wife, Elsie W. Wager; his son, Michael William Wager and his wife Janet Wager; his daughter, Leona Henry and her husband David Henry; grandchildren Elizabeth Henry and Laura Toman; and his nephew Alan Wager and his wife Doris Wager. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with full military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of El Paso.

Margarita A. Phagan passed away Thursday, April 4. She was a longtime resident of El Paso, and was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas G. Phagan, and her brother, Emilio Palafox. Jose Reyes Rivera passed away Wednesday, April 3. He was a sergeant first class and a veteran of WWII, the Korean War and the Vietname War. After his retirement from the military, he became a postal worker. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Zoila Rivera; his sons, Armando R. Rivera, Lionel R. Rivera, Jose R. Rivera, Jr., Samuel J. Rivera, Miguel D. Rivera and Matias D. Rivera; his grandchildren, Armando Rivera, Jaime Rivera, Adam Rivera, Zoila Rivera, Eric Rivera, Benjamin Rivera, Philip Rivera, Diego Rivera and Krista Mondragon; his brother, Matias Rivera; and sisters, Antonia Padilla and Eloyda Garcia. He is survived by his wife, Manuela Soriano; his sons, Robert Soriano and Genaro Soriano; daughters, Leticia Loya, Blanca Alaniz, Gloria Contreras and Nellie Soriano; his brothers, Andres Soriano, Manuel Soriano, Jose Angel Soriano, Santiago Soriano, Honesimo Soriano and Mario Soriano; his sister, Amalia Soriano; and 14 grandchildren. Interment took place in Anthony Cemetery.

Joe I. Herrera passed away Thursday, April 4. He was a lifelong resident of El Paso, graduating from Austin High School and working for over 30 years for the Union Pacific Railroad. He is survived by his wife, Cecilia Herrera; his sons, Chris Herrera and Joseph M. Herrera and his wife Brenca Herrera; his daughter, Bernadette Benoit and her husband Mike Benoit; five grandchildren: Vicente, Kassandra, Baby Chris, Brandon and Sean; and his sisters, Guadalupe Vallejo and Irene Aguilar. Interment took place at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

CW4 Ted D. Merrill, United States Army (Ret.), passed away Thursday, April 4. He retired from the United States Army after 23 years of active duty service which included tours to Vietnam and Korea. After his military retirement, he designed, built and owned DI-TE Hog Farm, a 500-sow farrow-to-finish commercial farm in Chaparral, NM) until his second retirement in 1995. He was a member of VFW Post #8919, the Chaparral Moose Lodge, the American Legion and the Alamogordo Elks Lodge. He was also a member of several hereditary societies including the Society of the Mayflower Descendants, the Order of Founders and Patriots of America, the Society of the War of 1812, and The Order of the Crown of Charlemagne. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie Mulheron and father Ralph G. Merrill. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Diane Merrill; his three sons, Ralph G. Merrill II and his wife Kellie Merrill, Steve Merrill and his wife Drenda Merrill, and Mike Merrill and his wife Theresa Ximenes; his two sisters, Peggy Dake and her husband Sam Dake, and Sue Travis and her husband Bob Travis; his brother Thomas Mulheron; seven grandchildren: Ace, Tyler, Chase, Chloe, Madison, Mackenzie and Jack. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, with full military honors.

Wayne W. Niemon passed away Tuesday, April 2. He entered the military in March of 1941 as a member of the 200th Coast Artillery Battalion sent to the Philippine Islands immediately after WWII was declared. In April 1942, he became a prisoner of war, captured on Bataan. Six weeks later, he was transferred to Bilibid Prison and then to Cabanatuan Death Camp, where he worked on various burial details for two years. Thirteen months before liberation, he was shipped to Japan’s Fukuoka Camp #3, working in steel mills. After being in a Japanese POW camp hospital for 120 days, he was released. His military decorations and citations include the Purple Heart, the American Defense Service Ribbon with Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic/Pacific Campaign Ribbon with Bronze Star, Distinguished Unit Badge with three oak leaf clusters, and the Victory Ribbon. He was an active member of the American Ex-POWs, El Paso Chapter. After his military retirement, he was employed by the Potash Company of America in Carlsbad, NM, as a motorman for an underground mine, where he received the Homes Safety Award for 40 years without a lost-time accident in underground mining. He is preceded in death by his wife, Marian S. Sturm. He is survived by nephews George White and William White; cousin Lillian Howard and Kim Howard. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with full military honors.

Michael Joseph Lynch passed away Tuesday, April 9. He served in the United States Army, and then moved to Dell City, Texas, where he and several family members established the CL Ranch. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Paula Miles Lynch; his three sons and their spouses, William Mead Lynch and Anne Lynch, Michael Joseph Lynch II and Patricia Sterling Rockoff, and James Anthony Lynch and Liz Russell Lynch; and by his grandchildren, Lee Elisabeth Lynch, Michael Patrick Lynch and Sara Elizabeth Rockoff. He is also survived by Paula’s six children, Maribeth Scott, Marsha Scott Duncan, Leo Miles Scott, Laura A. Scott, Claudie Scott Gorman and Paula Scott Azar, and their spouses and Paula’s 16 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Kathleen Lynch Murphy; his brother and sister-in-law, John K. Lynch and Nancy Lynch; his brother and sister-in-law, James A. Lynch and Mary Louise Lynch; his sister, Eileen Lynch Abbott; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial donations may be made to St. Clement’s Episcopal Parish School, 600 Montana, El Paso, Texas, 79902.
