Mary Augusta Cross, born in Waco, Texas, passed away Sunday, April 28. She studied at the Cochran Art Gallery and was a student of N.C. Wyeth, father of Andrew Wyeth. As an artist, she worked in various media, such as painting, photography, plexiglass, wood and pottery. She was featured in The New York Times regarding her work in designing her home and constructing her furniture. She owned an art gallery in Burlingame, California, and her work was featured in numerous newspapers. She was preceded in death by her husband, and is survived by her brother, Harlan Cross, and by her two sons, Clinton Cross and Harlan Cross.

Fire Chief (retired) Marion Lee Coleman passed away last week. He was born in Mississippi, graduated from Leland High School, and attended Durham Business College. He served as a Crew Chief in the United States Air Force during WWII, flying more than a million miles with such dignitaries as Secretary Cordell Hull. He was a member of the Hump Pilot’s Association, and was saluted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt upon arrival at one of their destinations.
He served the El Paso Fire Department for 39 years before retiring in 1984 as chief of the department, a position he held for almost 20 years. He had served under almost a dozen mayors during his tenure. As chief, he served on many committees and was head of the Pension Board, and also held office in many law enforcement organizations. He worked closely with Fort Bliss, Standard Oil and other community leaders to make El Paso a fire safe city. He taught at El Paso Community College and spoke often about fire safety and prevention to various groups.
His innovation and leadership resulted in the El Paso Fire Department becoming number three in the nation and number one in Texas during his career.
He is survived by Amy Coleman Cogswell, Lisa Coleman Walker and her husband Jeff Walker, Libby Tarin, John Michael Ferguson and his wife Robyn and Shelli Ferguson Russell and her husband Bill Russell, sister-in-law Franci Higgins, grandchildren Andre Lee Walker, Chap Walker, Allison Davis, Jennifer Tarin, Casey Ferguson, Bethany Tredway and her husband Curtis Tredway, Lindsay Mata and her husband Gil Mata, John Michael Ferguson Jr., Kristin Ferguson, Julie Ferguson, Erica Rae Bostic, and Krystal Lynn Bostic Gunter and her husband Troy Gunter.
Interment took place at Memory Gardens of the Valley in Santa Teresa.

Eduardo Garcia Muñoz passed away Sunday, May 5. He was a lifelong resident of El Paso and was employed as an office manager in the medical field. He was preceded in death by his father, Cruz Muñoz Sr. He is survived by his mother, Maria G. Muñoz; his brothers, Cruz Muñoz Jr., Juan Muñoz and his wife Patricia Muñoz, Ruben Muñoz, Luis Muñoz and his wife Patricia R. Muñoz; his sisters, Belia Payan and her husband Pablo Payan, Rosa Isela Alvarez, and Lucia Rodarte and her husband Ruben Rodarte; and numerous nieces and nephews. Interment took place at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Socorro Laura Soto passed away Saturday, May 4. She was a lifelong resident of El Paso and was a member of the Catholic Church. She retired as a bookkeeper for Springers Educational Aid after 35 years of service. She is survived by her husband, Salvador Soto Sr.; her son, Salvador Soto Jr. and his wife Nancy Soto; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and her sister, Amelia Zambrano. Interment took place in Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Nobu “Mariko” Hinrichsen, born in Kanita, Japan, passed away Thursday, May 2. She was a member of the Silverettes dance group, the Wellington Chew Senior Center, Sakura dance group, VFW Post #8919 Women’s Auxiliary, the Japanese Women’s Club of El Paso and the Bangkok Women’s Pool League.
She is survived by her son, Henry J. Hinrichsen and his wife Rebecca Hinrichsen; her daughter, Jeanne M. Short and her husband Mark Short; her grandchildren, Amy M. Short, Christopher M. Short, Kristina M. Hinrichsen, Hannah M. Hinrichsen and Rachel L. Hinrichsen; and her two brothers in Japan, Teruo Nanao and Kezo Nanao. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Wilna Derthick of Alamogordo passed away Saturday, May 4. She and her husband, Aldan C. Derthick, moved to Horizon City in 1968. She became active in the community with the Lioness Club and the Rebecca Stoddert Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in El Paso. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1980. In 1990, she moved to Alamogordo where she became a member of the Order of Rebekah Lodge #18, I.O.O.F. She was an accomplished musician, playing the piano, organ and violin, and was also a soprano vocalist. She is survived by numerous cousins including Daryl Gilmore, Sheryl Graham, Wanda Linam Perry and her husband Max Perry and Werda Porter. Interment took place at Restlawn Cemetery in El Paso.

Lorene “Renee” Russell passed away Friday, May 3. An 80-year resident of El Paso, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Emmett Russell; her parents, Lawrence and Ella May Gorman Butterfield; her brother, David Butterfield; and her granddaughter, Donna Tibbs Foster. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Gene Tibbs; her grandson and his wife, Michael and Pam Tibbs; her granddaughter and her husband, Cheryl and Rusty Hale; her grandson-in-law, Scooter Foster; her great-grandsons, Brett Hale and Garrett Hale and Drew Foster; great-granddaughter, Jennifer Oppulet; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Estella O. Montoya passed away Wednesday, May 1. She was a lifelong resident of El Paso and a member of the Catholic church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eutimio Montoya, and her son, Eutimio Montoya Jr. She is survived by her son, Ricardo O. Montoya; her daughters, Norma Valezuela and Cecilia Padilla; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and her sister, Concha Maldonado. Interment took place in Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Lee R. Hollingsworth passed away Saturday, May 4. A longtime El Paso resident, he was a retired Sears service technician. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Billie Hollingsworth; his daughters, Cheryl DeLacretaz and her husband Larry DeLacretaz and Gayle Costanzo and her husband Ralph Costanzo; his son, Gary Hollingsworth; grandchildren Nathan DeLacretaz, Ryan DeLacretaz, Vanessa DeLacretaz, Cory Costanzo, Adria Costanzo, Tiana Costanzo, Chiara Costanzo, Ian Hollingsworth, Devon Hollingsworth and Brylie Hollingsworth; great-grandchildren Stephen Fausett and Darian Ping; brother Edward Hollingsworth; and many nieces and nephews. Interment took place at Restlawn Cemetery.
Mr. Hollingsworth’s family wishes to thank Dr. Cesar Maldonado, the dialysis staff at Vista de Sol Fresenius Medical Clinic and the Cardiac Care Unit staff and renal care nurses at Sierra Medical Center. Whaley H. Berry passed away Thursday, May 2. He was born in El Paso in 1936, and attended Douglas School. In 1954, he went to work for the State National Bank as a supply room supervisor and became an inventory control supervisor and then inventory control officer. He was the treasurer of the Purchasing Management Association of El Paso. He retired in 1985.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia I. Berry, and his two children, Whaley H. Berry Jr. and Tanya N. Berry; his brothers, Andre Christmas and Eric Berry; sisters Lydia Taylor, Marie Mundy, and Millie Martin; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and aunts. Interment took place at Evergreen East Cemetery.

Zelda M. Bradford passed away Thursday, May 2. She was a resident of El Paso for 37 years and was a retired barber. She is survived by her son, Ramon Bradford and his wife Denise Bradford; her daughter, Mattie L. Campbell; and grandchildren James R. Bradford and Roman I. Bradford. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Jane Thornton, former Sun Bowl Association President and the first female to serve as president of any bowl organization, passed away Thursday, May 9. She moved to El Paso from Mississippi in 1934, and became actively involved in community activities. In addition to her work for the Sun Bowl Association, she was president of the Woman’s Club of El Paso, the El Paso Country Club Women’s Golf Association, and various parent-teacher associations. She was treasurer of the St. Clements Episcopal Church’s Bargain Box for many years, and on the board of Sutton Place and Coronado Townhouses.
She sold real estate for 50 years and was named realtor associate of the year in 1979 and was a lifelong member of the El Paso Association of Realtors. She was also the Southwest Texas tennis champion.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Thornton. She is survived by three children: Mary Jane Grant, Chris Thornton and JoAnne Bordelon; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her brother, Curtiss; and her sister, Pat. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sun Bowl Association or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Durwood Lee “Dag” Nobles passed away Saturday, May 11. Born in 1912 in Palestine, Texas, he moved to El Paso in 1958 and founded Refrigeration Suppliers Inc. He was a member of Fraternity Lodge 1111, the El Paso York Rite Bodies and the El Paso Scottish Rite Bodies, and was Past Potentate of El Maida Shrine and Past President of El Paso Sheriff’s Posse.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Goldie A. Nobles, and by his son, Donald Frank Nobles. He is survived by his present wife, Jeannine Hoefner Nobles; his son, John C. Nobles and wife Charlotte; and daughter-in-law, Barbara F. Nobles; grandchildren Ginny N. Markley, Lili N. Williams, James Nobles, Amy N. Stearns and Nancy N. Price; and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his step-children, Billy, Pat, Tim and John Hoefner, Kathy Williams, Slusie Alotto, and 12 grandchildren. Interment took place at Memory Gardens of the Valley. Ltc. (Ret.) John F. Loeffler passed away Friday, May 10. A longtime resident of El Paso, he graduated with a degree in chemical engineering from Pratt Institute of New York, and spent 23 years in the United States Army, Air Defense Division. During his Army career, he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Service medal, the RVN Campaign Medal, the RVN Gallantry Cross, the Bronze Star, Expert Sharp Shooter Badge 2/Rifle Bar and the Meritorious Service Medal. After his Army career, he worked for Raytheon Corporation, retiring after 15 years. He was a member of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International, the El Paso del Norte Texas Unit, SPEBSQSA Border Chorder Barbershop Quartet, the Model Railroad Association, the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John F. Loeffler Sr. and Katherine Murphy Loeffler. He is survived by his former wife, Patricia Loeffler; son John F. Loeffler III; daughters Barbara Orr, Eileen Held, Diane Yarbrough and Sarah Diedrich; 10 grandchildren; sister Katherine Martell; one niece and two nephews. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors.

Jose Luis Gonzalez passed away Tuesday, May 7. He worked in the Kennedy Space Program and was a member of the Dr. Werner von Braun team that left El Paso in 1950 to go to Huntsville, Ala. He was assigned to the launch team at Cape Canaveral, Fla., where he remained until his retirement. He was instrumental in the early phases of the Space Program in development of the launch vehicle checkout procedures in preparation for launch. In addition to his regular engineering assignment, he was utilized by the Public Affairs Office in guided tours and presentations to the public. He received several awards for his contributions to the Space program. He was preceded in death by his wife, Amelia Almeraz; brothers Lucas D. Gonzalez and Miguel E. Gonzalez; his sister, Carmen G. Barajas; his sons, Jose Luis Jr., Ruben, David, Carlos and Lucas Gonzalez; his daughter, Margarita Burns; brother Ignacio Gonzalez Sr.; sisters Magdalena Rincon, Teresa Rayas and Connie Gonzalez; and several nephews and nieces. Interment took place in Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Madison, Wisconsin, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, Wis. 53711.

Eugene T. Plate passed away Tuesday, May 7. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean War. He worked for Lockheed Martin Inc. for 25 years as a System Test Engineer Specialist and later as a scientific programming analyst until his retirement in 1990. After his retirement, he moved to El Paso, where he lived for the past 12 years. He was also an artist, working in sculpture, painting and stained glass. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Hakim and her husband Lou Hakim; grandchildren Deric Hakim and his wife Ester Hakim, and Kristen Chavez and her husband David Chavez; great-grandchildren Zachary Chavez, Jacob Chavez and Ethan Hakim. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Aneica “Nesa” Azar, a member of a pioneer family and a prominent lifelong resident of El Paso, passed away Thursday, May 2. She was born in El Paso on February 24, 1919, to Shibley and Emaline Abdou Azar. She attended Alta Vista Elementary School, graduated from Austin High School, and attended business college. She worked as the bookkeeper for her father’s business, Azar Brothers Nut Company and served as a Red Cross volunteer in El Paso during WWII. She was co-owner, vice president and secretary/treasurer of Dickshire-Coors and Lanward Corporation from 1947 until 1982, and was a trustee of Lanward Foundation. She was a past president of the Woman’s Club of El Paso, past treasurer of the Woman’s Club of El Paso Historical Trust, a member of PEO Chapter M, the Women’s Department of the Chamber of Commerce, the UTEP Women’s Auxiliary, Sun City Investors, the Pro Cathedral Church of Saint Clements and a volunteer at Sierra Medical Center. She was also president of many PTA groups, a scout den mother and a member of many athletic booster clubs.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Shibley Azar Jr. She is survived by her children, Cheryl Azar McCown and her husband Mike McCown, Richard N. Azar II and his wife Dianne Azar, Robert Edward Azar and his wife Mary Azar and Gregory Alan Azar; grandchildren Michelle McCown, James Michael McCown and his wife Suzy McCown, Dena McCown Reynolds and her husband Michael Reynolds, Richard N. “Trey” Azar III and his wife Jill Azar, Kimberley Azar Shepperd and her husband John Shepperd, John Benjamin “Ben” Azar and his wife Emily Azar, Robert Edward Azar II, Bryan Andrew Azar, Steven King Azar land Alan Benjamin Azar; six great-grandchildren: Richard N. “Nathan” Azar IV, Lauren Elizabeth Reynolds, Leslie Heather Reynolds, Tucker Pennington Azar, John Ben Azar Shepperd and Leah Paige Reynolds; her sister, Selema “Nini” Mansour and her husband Alfred Mansour; twin brothers, Edward Azar and his wife Marian, and Phillip Azar Sr. and his wife Bette Azar; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Interment took place at Memory Gardens of the Valley.

Marjorie Meyer Hughey passed away Monday, May 20. She was a resident of El Paso for 66 years. She was a member of St. Clement’s Episcopal Church and was a sustaining member of the Junior League of El Paso and active in the Altar Guild and Planned Parenthood. She attended Texas School of Mines (now UTEP). She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Harrison Hughey, and her sister, Ethel Meyer Schwartz. She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Hughey Gillett and her husband Ron Gillett and Virginia Hughey Christie; grandsons Ron E. Gillett Jr. and Harrison Hughey Gillett; niece Sandra Schwartz Hoover; nephew Jonathan D. Schwartz Jr. and his wife Jody Schwartz; and many nieces and nephews. Contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Ralph Weston Hodges Sr. passed away Sunday, April 28. His birth certificate in 1919 recorded him as “unnamed Hodges – born across the river near Leasburg Dam,” a fact he found unique. Soon after his birth, his parents made their home in El Paso. He was the ROTC Commander at Austin High School, and went on to enter the United States Army to serve during WWII. While stateside at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, he incurred injuries, was admitted to a hospital and fell in love with his nurse, Dolores. They were married, but were assigned to different posts to fulfill their military obligations, he to the Philippines, she to the Island of Tinian. After the war, they settled in El Paso, where he was a Major in the reserves and received a degree from Texas Western College. He went to work for Chevron, where he remained until his retirement 34 years later. After his retirement, he helped the indigent with income tax filings each year.
He was preceded in death by his brother Stanley and his grandson Peter Hodges. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dolores Hodges; his son, Ralph W. Hodges Jr. and his wife Marlis Hodges; his daughter, Kathy Johnsen and her husband Guy Johnsen; sister Mildred Jenness and her husband R.J. Jenness; his sister Colleen Lambeth and her husband J.D. Lambeth; four grandchildren, Ralph W. Hodges III, Colley Hodges, Mark Johnsen and Erik Johnsen; and one great grand-daughter, Meagan Hodges. Memorial contributions may be made to the El Paso Zoological Society.
