David Alan Hall passed away Sunday, June 23, after a battle with cancer. He was a graduate of Eastwood High School and served in the United States Navy for 18 months in Vietnam. He attended the Cebic School of Design in New York City and became a patternmaker and designer. He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth C. Hall; his brother, Granville “Guy” Hall Jr.; and his sister, Sandra Lee Hall. He is survived by his son, Joshua Hall; his father, Granville Hall Sr.; his sister, Mary Sloan; and by his half sisters, Nancy Monsivaiz and Rebecca Hall. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of El Paso.

Regan Robert Showery passed away Tuesday, June 18. In high school, he was a starting tackle on the Quarter Finalist Coronado team, and at Tulane University, he was selected for scholarship studies in Russia and Mongolia. He was a Magna Cum Laude, graduating in 1986, and was a classicist historian. He is survived by his son, Mateo Showery; by his parents, Jane Kirshenbaum and Dr. Raymond Showery; by his brothers, Russell B. Showery, Randolph L. Showery and Roger A. Showery; and by his sisters, Mary Raelene Perea, Rachel Showery and Rebecca Showery.

Lorann Mays Mattox dies after illness
Beloved wife, devoted mother, community leader and friend to all who knew her, Lorann Mays Mattox, 57, passed away on June 26 after an extended illness.
Lorann was a lifelong resident of El Paso and is survived in death by her husband of over 35 years, former El Paso County Judge, Charles W. “Chuck” Mattox; by her daughter, Autumn Virginia Mattox of Dallas, and by her son, Charles W. “Chuck” Mattox, Jr. She was preceded in death by her son Thomas Matthew “Matt” Mattox and daughter Katherine Harvey Mattox and also by her parents, Virginia Cross Mays, who served as the Assistant Society Editor for the El Paso Herald Post, and Tom Mays, former County Commissioner, Precinct Four.
Mrs. Mattox’s many achievements began with her graduation from El Paso High School in 1962 after which she attended the University of Mississippi in Oxford and Texas Western College (the University of Texas at El Paso), where she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. Lorann Mays Mattox was a beauty queen at both the University of Mississippi and at Texas Western College. She also served as president of her flight attendant class with American Airlines. She was truly loved by the community and enjoyed the work she did as manager of Cross Nursery and Tom Mays Garden Mart.
Lorann Mattox also received recognition for her beauty, reigning as Fabens Cotton Queen and as a model at the White House Department Store. Her many contributions to the community include membership in the Women’s Department of the El Paso Chamber of Commerce at the age of 19, and in 1973-1974, she served as Chairman Director.
Later, she became instrumental in the establishment of the Women’s Department of the Chamber of Commerce in Albuquerque. She was also an active member of the Junior League of El Paso and the El Paso Symphony Guild and served on the Board of Directors for the Southwestern International Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Also of note in a lifetime of community involvement are her instrumentality in erecting the 25-foot Obelisk Monument in Tom Lea Park, which serves as the designation of the southernmost tip of the Rocky Mountains, and for the building of the rock wall surrounding Concordia Cemetery.
Lorann Mattox was the chairwoman for the Swine Flu Immunization Program and was a dedicated volunteer at the Newark Maternity Hospital and at the Houchen Center. In 1973, she was named one of the Outstanding Women in America for her civic work.

Dr. Michael Nangle passed away on Friday, June 28, due to complications from diabetes. He was an international keynote speaker and television personality who specialized in Judeo-Christian understanding.
He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher Nangle. He is survived by his wife, Georgina Nangle; and by his son, George Nangle.

Elias Carbajal Sr. passed away Saturday, June 29. He was a resident of El Paso for 43 years.
He is survived by his wife, Esther Carbajal; by his sons, Elias Carbajal Jr. and his wife Martha Carbajal, and Humberto Carbajal and his wife Laura Carbajal; his daughter, Isela Carbajal Ramirez and her husband Ricardo Gabriel; his grandchildren, Karla Carbajal Williams, Cristina Carbajal, Erik Carbajal, Jacqueline Carbajal and Rene Gabriel Ramirez; great-grandchildren Alexis and Alicia Williams; and brothers Jose Carbajal and Rafael Carbajal. Interment took place at Mount Carmel Cemetery with military honors.

Blanca Dorantes, lifelong resident of El Paso, passed away Sunday, June 30. She was preceded in death by her sister, Patty Hernandez, and her aunt, Luz Quiroz. She is survived by her husband, Johnny Dorantes; her daughters, Yvette Espinoza and her husband Ralph Espinoza and Erika Dorantes; her grandchildren, Cristian Dorantes, Vianka Espinoza and Kai Kimble; her parents, Cruz and Ramona Hernandez; her brother Jesse Hernandez; and her mother-in-law, Elvira Dorantes. Oscar O. “Balo” Martinez passed away Friday, June 28. He was a longtime resident of El Paso and a member of San Antonio Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Refugio and Esther Martinez. He is survived by his brothers, Carlos Martinez, Concepcion Martinez, Gilbert Martinez and J.R. Martinez; sisters Esther Cazares, Hilda Martinez and Irma Molina; and many nieces and nephews. Interment took place at Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Cre Rector Mason, a former El Paso resident who lived in Alto, N.M., passed away Tuesday, June 11. During her entire adult life, the former high school teacher was an active community volunteer and in 1960 was named Texas Club Woman of the Year. While living in El Paso with her husband, Raburn (Bud) Mason, she served as president of Chapter M, PEO, and president of the El Paso Country Club Ladies Golf Association. Upon her husband’s retirement in 1996 they moved to Alto, N.M., where Mrs. Mason was a member of the Lincoln County Historical Society, Alto Lakes Country Club 18-hole Golf Group, Trail Snails and the Community United Methodist Church. Mrs. Mason was preceded in death by a son, Raburn Mason Jr., in 1958. Survivors include her husband, Bud, to whom she was married for 49 years; daughters, Rebecca Kenny and her husband Alex Kenny, and Kimberly Strange and her husband Mark Strange; son, Marcus Clay Mason and his wife Valerie; and five grandchildren.

Joseph J. Waxman passed away Monday, July 8. He was a retired merchant, a member of Temple Mt. Sinai and past president of the Rotary Club. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sara Waxman; by his son, Neil Waxman; by his daughters, Arlene Ellenburg and Michelle Rogoff; by his sister, Evelyn Kaufman; and by five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Dorothea Emma Kasprowski passed away Wednesday, July 3, in Chehalis, Wash. She was a longtime resident of El Paso before moving to Washington. She was a member of the El Paso Women’s Bowling Association, the El Paso Women’s 600 Club, the Texas Women’s Bowling Association and the El Paso Women’s Hall of Fame 2000. She was the city secretary from 1981 to 1985 and 1989 to 1995, and was also the secretary of the Freeway Senior League. She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward Kasprowski. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Rachel, and her son, Edward F. Kasprowski. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Humane Society of El Paso or Hospice of El Paso.

Earl Blacksher Sr. passes away
Earl Burt Blacksher Sr. passed away Sunday, July 14.
He was the youngest of four children born to a farmer/blacksmith and his wife in Appleby, Texas, and a fourth-generation Texan. His father died when he was five, and his widowed mother raised four children, surviving the Great Depression.
Becoming the principal source of financial support for his mother once his siblings moved away and married, Blacksher quit school after the eighth grade and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps as a young teen. He was part of a crew that built Highway 50 in California, sending most of his monthly salary – less than $30 – home to his mother.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1939, serving as a medic in Europe during WWII. His unit liberated Nazi concentration camps near the war’s end.
In 1947, he transferred over to the newly-formed U.S. Air Force, and was assigned to the Strategic Air Command as a radio operator and flight crew member on B-17s, B-29s and B36s. In his tours of duty, he saw every continent on earth.
He retired as a Master Sgt. In 1960 and went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration as a flight controller at the El Paso International Airport.
He retired in 1971 due to a severe arthritic condition of the neck and spine, the result of thousands of hours of flight time at high altitudes and extremely cold temperatures.
Upon retiring from the FAA, he enrolled in El Paso Community College and followed his aptitude as a mechanic and a craftsman; he loved to build and fix things.
He suffered from several physical handicaps in his retirement years, including the fusion of his neck and spine, the near loss and subsequent limited use of his left arm due to a farming accident and finally his paralysis from a fall nearly six years ago.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Ruthie Blacksher, and his son, Ricky Blacksher.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Connie Blacksher; his children, Burt Jr., daughter-in-law Jo, David, Barbara and Scott; grandchildren, Eric, Amy, Ian, David, Alan, Zachary, Amber, Brian, Russell and Alex; great-granddaughter Kennedy Isis; and his sister, Alice Billingsley. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors.

Earl C. Nehring, father of Bruce Nehring, artistic director of the Bruce Nehring Consort, passed away Wednesday, July 10. He was born January 13, 1906. He owned and operated the Nehring Hardware Store in Markesan, Wis., for 51 years and was an active member of the Markesan Bible Church. He is survived by his wife of nearly 73 years, Faith Nehring; his sons, Robert and Bruce; and three daughters, Joyce, Rose and Carol. Luz Mendoza Carpio passed away Thursday, July 18. She was a lifelong resident of El Paso and was a 1944 Bowie High School graduate. She served her community beginning in 1956 as PTA president at Clardy Elementary School and later became an officer in the 15th District PTA. She was also involved in the Bowie Alumni Association, Los Compadres Civic Club and the Girl Scouts. She was precinct chair and election judge, president of the Women’s National Democratic Club-Kathy White Chapter, and involved with the Eastside Democrats, the Cathedral High School Mothers Club, Goals for El Paso, the Trinity Coalition, the El Paso Police Department Youth Service Division, Progressive Democrats, the Mexican-American Democrats, the El Paso Women’s Caucus, the Mayor’s Advisory Council and the Pan American Pilot Club. She is listed in Who’s Who in Texas, 1973-74, and was named outstanding American in the South (1975), Who’s Who of American Women (1981-82), Personalities of the South and Personalities of America. In 1987, she was inducted into the El Paso County Democratic Hall of Fame, and was inducted into the El Paso Commission for Women Hall of Fame in 1994. A street on the Eastside of El Paso was named for her. She was a realtor, and was retired from the Texas Department of Human Resources.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Maria Bonilla; and sisters, Consuelo Terrones and Cuca Bonilla. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Pedro Carpio; daughter, Ceci Carpio; son, Pete Carpio; granddaughter, Marissa Carpio; and her brother, Felix Mendoza. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Bess F. Wilburn passed away Sunday, July 21. She graduated in 1956 from Sul Ross State College, majoring in education, and was a member of Kappa Delta Pi honor society while in college. She taught in the Ysleta Independent School District from 1955 to 1963 at Hacienda Heights and Ranchland Hills Schools. She also taught in the El Paso Independent School District from 1963 through 1984 at Bliss, Travis, Bassett and Hillside Schools where she taught fifth and sixth grade science until her retirement in 1984. She was teacher of the year in 1977-78.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton E. Wilburn; and by her parents, Bertha and Charles Fultz. She is survived by her daughter, Edwina Hellard; by her son, James A. Wilburn; her granddaughter, Debra L. Hellard; grandsons, James E. Hellard, John T. Hellard Jr., Jeff G. Hellard, John Anthony Wilburn, James B. Wilburn, Mark A. Wilburn and Michael E. Wilburn; 12 great grandchildren; and brothers, Johnny and Elix Fultz. Interment took place in Fort Bliss National Cemetery. Stan Kubinski passed away Saturday, July 27, from complications from a head injury. He was the son of Polish immigrants in Minneapolis in 1925, and graduated from UCLA, serving in the United States Navy. He married Lily Hovey and worked as a meteorologist in Minneapolis for nine years before moving his family to Texas in 1965. He worked at White Sands Missile Range, where he became the chief of the Atmospheric Sciences Lab; he retired in 1986. After his retirement, he began a new career in real estate.
He is survived by his wife of over 50 years; their seven children and 12 grandchildren: Paul Kubinski and wife Kathy and their children Kyle, Ryan and Tyler; son Dave Kubinski and his wife Trish; son Mike Kubinski and his wife Terri and their children Stephanie, Amy and Mark; son Steve Kubinski; daughter Karen Hansel, her husband Glenn and their son Dominick; son Dan Kubinski, his wife Tracy and their children Lauren and Brenna Rose; son Jim Kubinski, his wife Dawn and their children Andrew, Aaron and Annabelle; and his sister, Johanna Cox of Pine City, Minn. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors.

Ruth Cherry Park, homemaker, business woman, church and civic volunteer, died Sunday, July 2l, at her home. She had lived in El Paso for fifty-nine years.
Her contributions to the community included service as Director of the Woman’s Club, the Woman’s Department of the Chamber of Commerce, Goodwill Auxiliary, the Better Business Bureau, the YWCA and the El Paso County Historical Society. She was an officer of Chapter M, PEO, and past President of the El Paso City Panhellenic and Chi Omega Alumnae Association.
From 1960 until 1976, Mrs. Park was owner and administrator of Rest Haven Nursing Center and a Board Member of the Texas Nursing Home Association.
Survivors include her daughter, Cherry Cramer Roberts of San Antonio; son, Thomas Edward Cramer of Coppell; brother, Edward Cherry of Jonesboro Arkansas; five grandchildren; two nieces and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward Oliver Cherry and Vera Howell Cherry, and husbands Thomas Cramer, Louis Ash and William Park.
