Etta Zimmerman Solnick passed away Sunday, Sept. 1. She was born in Newark, N.J., in 1920 to Harry and Helena Zimmerman. In the 1940s, she worked as a copywriter for Revlon Cosmetics. She met her future husband, Clarence Solnick, on a blind date. They were married six months later on Dec. 29, 1948, at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. While her husband established a chain of clothing stores in Texas called Bentley’s Inc., Mrs. Solnick became involved in many civic activities while living in Lubbock. She was active in congregation Shaareth Israel Sisterhood, Hadassah, the South Plains Women’s Golf Association and the South Plains Art Association. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University in 1980 and a master’s in 1982, both in English. She taught English and film at Texas Tech University, UTEP and the Sergeant Majors Academy at Fort Bliss.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Clarence, and two brothers and a sister. She is survived by her three daughters and their husbands: Stefanie and Jerry Cargill, Emily and Bob Harris and Susan and David Schecter; by her sister, Sylvia Levine; her grandchildren, Denny Cargill, Paula Cargill, Everett Barksdale, Scott Schecter and Craig Schecter; two great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Mt. Sinai Campership Fund, 4408 N. Stanton, El Paso, Texas 79902, or Hospice of VNA, 2211 E. Missouri, El Paso, Texas 79903. James W. Murphy passed away Friday, Aug. 30, in Mesa, Ariz., after a lengthy illness. He was born in Brewton, Ala., in 1917. He married Martha L. Foolks in 1945, and in 1961, retired from the U.S. Army as a Mst. E-7 after 20 years of active service. He also retired from the Federal Reserve Bank in El Paso after 19 1/2 years of service in the security department.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Myrtice Pittman. He is survived by his wife, Martha; his son, James Murphy Jr. and his wife Kathey; his daughter, Jana J. Roberts and her husband Lloyd; his grandchildren, Jennifer Decker and her husband Neil; James Murphy and his wife Amanda; Michelle Murphy and Amanda Roberts; three great-grandchildren, Diaundra, Brad and Kristen; and four sisters, Ann Mills, Rita Jackson, Martha Carpenter and Billy Sue Sloan. Interment took place in Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Anna Henrietta Steinmann passed away Tuesday, Sept. 3. She was an El Paso resident since 1957. She is survived by her husband, William Steinmann; her son, Dr. William E. Steinmann Jr.; daughters, Alice Hardin, Elizabeth Williams and Jane Dement; grandchildren, Erin, Brian Alison, Brett, John, Jennifer, Thomas, Will and John; and great-grandchildren, Cody, Colton and Jarrett. Laura Shapiro, diplomatic corps widow, dies
Laura L. Shapiro passed away Sunday, Aug. 18. She was born in New Jersey, and enrolled in George Washington University when she was 16. Shortly thereafter, she met her future husband, Goodwin Shapiro. They married in 1947, and she ended her graduate studies in psychology to support his career in the Foreign Service. Life in the diplomatic corps led to assignments in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico City, Korea, Spain, Argentina and Ciudad Juarez. The Shapiros entertained many dignitaries during their time in the diplomatic corps, including presidents, royalty and astronauts.
She also was an active volunteer in many organizations, including serving as country commissioner for Girl Scouts USA while stationed in Spain. She was active in the El Paso Westside Welcome Club, Pro Musica, the Sunset Heights Garden Club of ElPaso and in the foreign student host family program at Fort Bliss. In addition to her civic involvement, she was an active realtor for many years in El Paso.
She was preceded in death by her husband after 50 years of marriage. She is survived by her son, Rick Shapiro; her daughter, Lorie Shapiro; her son-in-law, James Magelky; and her granddaughters, Erica and Sarah Magelky. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the American Heart Assocsiation, the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society.

Johnie Jamison passed away Monday, Sept. 9. One of Sunland Park Racetrack’s all-time great trainers, he was born in Springer, N.M., and raised in Raton. He graduated from high school in 1956 before beginning a five-decade long career of horseracing success. In the late ’60s, he trained Missile Pit, one of the fastest horses in Sunland Park history. While training for Sunland Park owner Stan Fulton, he won two stakes races in one day at Ruidoso Downs. Racehorse owner and local businessman Jim Paul remembers Jamison as “one of the greatest trainers in the history of Southwest racing. He was my partner with every horse I ever bought. We were a pretty good team, but I’ll miss him most as a friend.”
Jamison is survived by his wife of 45 years, Helen M. Jamison; sons, Jerry Jamison and John Jamison; daughter, Joyce Jamison; sister, Geraldine Miller; brothers, Forest Jamison and O.D. Jamison; granddaughters, Haylee Marie Jamison and Melina Chavez.

Teunisse Virginia Breese-Rabin, 55, died at home in Honaunau, Hawaii, on Monday, Sept. 9. She was born in El Paso and had been a resident of Hawaii since 1974. She was an artist, teacher, community leader, grant writer and untiring advocate for the arts in public education.
She was preceded in death by her father, Col. E.W. (Pete) Breese and a brother, Peter Breese. She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Arnold Rabin; her daughter, Miriam Rabin; sons, Peter Rabin and Eric Rabin; mother Virginia (Dinny) Luckett Breese; brother, Peronneau Breese; sister, Nancy Breese Holmes and niece Melissa Pinch.

Kenneth Carl Roberts, husband of former El Pasoan Cherry Cramer Roberts, died September 5 at the age of 58. Services were held at the Coker United Methodist Church in San Antonio on September 7.
He is survived by his wife and children, Denise Roberts Farish, Kenneth Carl Roberts, Jr., Jacob Thomas Roberts and Will Cramer Roberts; one grandson, Joshua Daniel Farish; his mother, Icy DeVord Roberts; three brothers and four sisters.
Memorials may be made to Arizona Cancer Center/UAL, Development Office, P.O. Box 245013, Tucson, AZ, designated to Pancreatic Research or the charity of your choice.

Pedro Felix Herrera, 76, passed away Saturday, Sept. 7. He was born in Mexico City, D.F., and grew up in the barrio of Tepito. He became the man of the house at the age of 9, ending his schooling to help his mother raise his six siblings by working at his uncle’s motorcycle and bicycle shop. At the age of 18, he became interested in bullfighting, and passed a test in Mexico in 1952 to become a full-fledged banderillero.
He met his soulmate and future wife, Albina Valles, and they were united in marriage on June 8, 1957. Together, they raised six children.
He worked as a bodyman, fixing tour buses at Chihuahuenses in Cd. Juarez. A few years later, he moved his wife and family to El Paso to build a better future. In 1977, he decided to dedicate the rest of his life to his wife, his children and to God by becoming involved in the Catholic Church, which was the basis of his religious upbringing. He continued his career as a bodyman, working for Casa Ford, Courtesy Chevrolet and Dick Poe’s dealerships. He returned to Casa Ford, where he worked until his retirement in 1997.
“Pedrito,” as he was known to dear friends and family, enjoyed becoming a full time grandfather, and traveled to visit his grandchildren in New York, Connecticut, Florida, Washington, D.C., Washington state, Dallas, Tulsa and Las Vegas.
He lived a full and happy life until his passing on Sept. 7 in Denton, Texas.
He is survived by his wife, Albina Herrera; his son, Jesus Eduardo Herrera; his daughters, Mary Cruz, Carmen Althoff, Judith Gunther, Isabel Lopez and Lourdes Roemer; and 12 grandchildren. Interment took place at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Marion Morine McDermott died Friday, Sept. 6. She was born on a farm near Stockton, MO, in 1910 to John H. and Alice Price. She grew up in Las Animas, Colo., and was married there to Tom P. McDermott. The McDermotts lived in Tracy, Calif., for many years, where Mrs. McDermott was a receptionist and records clerk for the San Joaquin County Health Department. They moved to El Paso in 1988 to be near their daughter. Mrs. McDermott was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Tom, and by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. McDermott is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and John Rhodes of El Paso; two granddaughters, Julia Voigt of Indianapolis and Jennifer Clement of St. Louis; and great-grandchildren, Nina Voigt of Indianapolis and Benjamin Mohler of St. Louis.

Helen Blanchard Garnsey, 93, passed away Sunday, Sept. 15. She was an El Paso resident since 1962, and was a sculptor. She was a past president of El Paso Designer Craftsmen and a member of the El Paso Art Museum Guild, the American Craft Council and the El Paso Symphony Guild.
She is survived by her husband, Clarke H. Garnsey; her daughter, Barbara B. Hohenberg and husband Pierre C. Hohenberg of New York; daughter Maggi. B. Davidson and husband Bill Davidson of Minn.; son Louis F. Blanchard Jr. and wife Noni of Indonesia; grandchildren Kate Blanchard, Alex Blanchard, Laura Hohenberg and Liz Davidson; and by her sister, Jane B. Thorpe of Calif. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Louis F. Blanchard Sr., in 1982. Memorial donations can be made to the City of Saint Jude, 2048 West Fairview, Montgomery, Ala., 36108.

Gerhard E. Schermer, 77, passed away Sunday, Sept. 15. He was raised in Berlin, Germany, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1955; in 1962, he became a U.S. citizen. In 1961, he opened El Paso Trade and Library Book Bindery, which later became El Paso Book Bindery. He was well-known across the country for the quality of his workmanship. Until shortly before his passing, he continued to bind booksfor UTEP, the clergy and members of the medical and legal community. He also rebound many historical booksfor the El Paso Public Library.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frieda M. Haase-Schermer. He is survived by Renate Koslowski and Dena Koslowski of Germany; Christina Harkcom of Ariz.; David Robinson, Jean Robinson, David Robinson Jr. and Brook Robinson of La.; and by JoAnn Pelowski and Kirk Pelowski of Ariz. He is also survived by special friends in El Paso: Robert Prosberg, Sharon Forsyth, Julieta M. Ogas and Manny Padilla. Interment took place at Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Michael Thomas Pullen Sr. passed away Wednesday, Sept. 11. He was born in Mobile, Ala., the eldest son of Lt. Col. (Ret.) Sydney and Louise Pullen. He met and married Millie Lucas in 1968, and served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1971, achieving the rank of sergeant specialist 5. He served as a chemical warfare specialist in Vietnam, for which he received several honors including the Army Commendation Medal and the Air Medal with Clusters. After his time in the military, he went to work in the transportation industry, working for ATC Vancom in Seattle where he was maintenance manager.
He is survived by his wife, Millie Pullen; his son, Tom Pullen, of Austin; his son Dan Pullen and daughter Breanna Pullen of Kent; his parents, Sydney and Louise Pullen of El Paso; his brother, Mark Pullen and wife Joy Pullen and their daughter Sydney Pullen of Darlington, S.C.; his brother, Matt Pullen, of El Paso; his brother, Doug Pullen and his wife Teresa Pullen and their son Keith Pullen of Grand Blanc, Mich.; and by his sister Lesley Pullen and her partner Tomas Leyva of El Paso. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in his name to the Northwest Kidney Centers Foundation, P. O. Box 3035, Seattle, Wash., 98114.

James Gordon Schmidt Sr., 66, of Houston, passed away Monday, Sept. 9. He was born and raised in Galveston, attended Ball High School and graduated from Lamar State University in Beaumont. He was a tennis player from the age of 10, and began his teaching career as head tennis professional at the El Paso Tennis Club and then taught at the Memorial Park Tennis Center from 1977-78.
He was a past member of the El Paso Downtown Rotary and was inducted into the Lamar University Athletic Hall of Honor. Among his many achievements in Tennis are six national titles: the NAIA Singles Championship (1955); the NAIA Doubles Championship (1958); the U.S. 35 and Over Doubles Championships (1976 and 1977); and the U.S. Professional Tennis Association Doubles Championship (1971). He was also the Texas State Men’s Singles Champion in 1954 and the Doubles Champion in 1956.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Martha Dee Schmidt; his children and their spouses, Polly and Jerry Holmes; Jim (Bubba) and Pam Schmidt; two granddaughters, Brianna and Brooke Holmes; his sisters, Anna Herzfeld of Galveston and Evelyn Gray of Houston; and a brother, Paul Schmidt, of Houston.
Memorial donations may be made to Bethel Church or the Arizona Police Chaplain’s Ministry, P. O. Box 12161, Glendale, Ariz., 85318.

John “Bill” Hargrove, 76, passed away Saturday, Sept. 21. He was an Air Force veteran of WWII, a member of the Masonic Lodge and Coronado Baptist Church and a longtime resident of El Paso.
He was preceded in death by a son, John Fletcher Hargrove II, and a daughter, Mitzi Hargrove Bond. He is survived by his wife, Colleen D. Hargrove; son Kelly B. Hargrove; two daughters, Cynthia C. Smith and Jennifer L. McClellan; three sons-in-law, Gene T. Smith, James T. Bond and Bill A. McLellan; and a daughter-in-law, Brenda D. Hargrove. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Mitzi Bond Scholarship Fund at Coronado Baptist Church.

Virginia G. Hernandez, 48, passed away Friday, Sept. 20. She was a lifelong resident of El Paso and a member of the Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband, Romulo Hernandez; sons Romulo Hernandez Jr. and Norman John Hernandez; daughters, Malisa Ann Leveretto, Arlene Marie Hernandez and Olympia Jessica Hernandez; 13 grandchildren; brothers, Victor Garcia Jr., Vicente Garcia and Manuel Garcia; sisters, Lorenza Bustamante, Teresa Garcia and Vivian Rincon.
Interment took place at Mount Carmel Cemetery. Robert Owen Ray died on Aug. 6 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Scranton, Texas, on January 15, 1917, and grew up in Amarillo where he graduated from Amarillo High School and attended Amarillo College, majoring in engineering. After serving in the Army Air Corps during WWII, he and his family moved to Fort Worth before coming to El Paso with his wife and daughter in 1947.
After returning from his military service in Germany, he worked in civil service at Fort Bliss until his retirement in 1973. He then opened his own business, Ray’s Small Repairs, where he fixed “almost everything around the house.” His clients affectionately called him “the widow’s aide and the unhandyman’s friend.”
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Hubert and Emma Ray; by his first wife, Jerry Ray; and his brother, Alan Ray. He is survived by his wife, Ann Bryan Rucker Ray; a daughter, Kay Eskew and her husband Patrick of Midland; stepdaughter Jay-Ann Rucker Price of El Paso; grandsons Owen Eskew and his wife Jennifer of Biloxi, Miss.; and Alan Eskew of Midland. He is also survived by two great-grandsons, Samuel Owen Eskew and Benjamin James Eskew, and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to any favorite charity.
Kenneth Marshall Holmes, 81, passed away Thursday, Sept. 19. He was born in Blue Island, Ill., and became a soldier in the U.S. Army, serving during WWII. He spent 22 years in the service and earned numerous commendations.
He married Ursula Hennig on January 26, 1952, and they were married for 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, James, Byron, Bart and Bolind Holmes.
He is survived by his wife; son, Mike Holmes and his wife Gita; grandchildren, Sarah and Katie Holmes; niece Cynthia Holmes; and sister-in-law, Mary Holmes.
Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, with full military honors.
