Former Juarez mayor, Mascarenas, dies at 88
Former Juarez Mayor Rene Mascarenas remained an advocate for urban renewal and the revitalization of his adopted city up to his passing Aug. 22 at 88.
His vision of a thriving Juarez continued long past his mayoral term of 1956-59 as he took part in varied business projects, including real estate and the development of the Border Industrial Program that led to the start of the maquiladora program.
He was born in Los Angeles and spent the first decade of his life in Sonora, Mexico. He came to the border when his father took a position with Mexican customs. He studied at the Palmore College in Sunset Heights then proceeded to earn an accounting degree in Mexico City.
After working a time with Price Waterhouse, he returned to Juarez where he and his wife, Carmen Haas, became active in the border community.
Together they formed the Margarita Miranda Mascareñas Foundation in honor of his mother and dedicated themselves to philanthropic activities. His son, José Manuel Mascareñas Haas, has directed the organization for a number of years, focusing on scholarships for Juárez students as well as Mosaíco Cultural, a yearlong season of cultural events, including art exhibits and arts performances. The foundation entered into an alliance with the El Paso Community Foundation earlier this year.
The late Mascareñas wrote several books, including one about his mayoral term. He wrote for newspapers and was president of Correo newspaper’s editorial board. He also served on several bank boards and was a director of Sunwest Bank for two decades.
His civic work was abundant as he created movements through groups including an effort toward downtown improvement to restore historic monuments in Juarez. He continued to lead an organization he created to serve as a catalyst for the rejuvenation of downtown Juarez. He was especially interested in continued development of the tourist tract and historic area that takes in the Juárez Cathedral, the old Customs House, Juarez Avenue and the streets leading to the international crossings.
He also was a founder of the Juarez Country Club and the residential area that surrounds it. Over the years he turned his office, in the lower level of his home which was located in that residential area, into a museum with collections of Medieval armor, swords and firearms.
He is survived by his wife, five daughters, two sons and numerous grandchildren.

Luther Henderson
Luther Henderson, the leader of a group of investors who purchased Pier 1 Imports in 1966 and transformed the company into a nationwide retail force, died Saturday of injuries sustained two weeks earlier in a traffic collision. He was 82.
Mr. Henderson was Pier 1’s chairman and president from 1966 until 1983 and its chairman from 1983 until 1985. He served as a director and founder-chairman from 1985 until 1993.
Other American companies may be in trouble for corporate accounting practices, but Mr. Henderson set high standards for Pier 1, Girouard said.
“He was an accountant by trade and instilled some very sound financial policies,” he said. “We have great financial discipline because of him. Our company continues to do well.”
Mr. Henderson’s death was a blow to family and friends, said Barbara Cox, Henderson’s secretary of 40 years who retired last year.
Mr. Henderson was born in Fort Worth on Aug. 12, 1920. He attended Fort Worth public schools, graduated from Texas Christian University with a bachelor of science degree, and earned a master of business administration degree from Northwestern University. Later, he attended the Advanced Management Program of Harvard University.
During World War II, Mr. Henderson served in the Navy. Afterward, he joined the family business, Chickasaw Lumber Co.
Mr. Henderson was a longtime friend of the Fort Worth native and business legend Charles Tandy, founder of Tandy Corp. In the late 1950s, Mr. Henderson accepted Tandy’s offer to join Tandy Corp.
Eventually, Mr. Henderson rose to become vice president, treasurer and a director of Tandy Corp., now RadioShack.
In 1962 on a trip to San Mateo, Calif., Tandy noticed a gift shop called Cost Plus Imports, which specialized in items from the Orient. Tandy bought Cost Plus, renamed it Pier 1 Imports in 1964 and put Mr. Henderson in charge.
In 1966, an investor group led by Mr. Henderson bought Pier 1 from Tandy. In 1970, Pier 1 stock was first listed on the American Stock Exchange. Two years later, it moved to the New York Stock Exchange.
Pier 1’s eclectic offerings of inexpensive, Asian-influenced clothing, pillows, brass items, candles and rattan furnishings captured the mood of the late 1960s and early 1970s and helped define the era’s look.
Under Mr. Henderson’s leadership, Pier 1 expanded from its northern California base to include more than 750 outlets and grew from small shops to full-line home furnishing stores.
Survivors include his wife, Toni Beck Henderson of Fort Worth; a son, Mark Henderson of Los Angeles; two daughters, Jean Searcy of Montezuma, N.M., and Martha Buckingham of McMinnville, Ore.; and seven grandchildren.

Performer, El Paso bridge great Una Carpenter, dies
Una Carpenter passed away Wednesday, Oct. 9. She was 86 years of age. She was born to English parents in Calcuta, India, on Aug. 23, 1916 as Una Wise.
She joined a Hungarian Folk Dance group in 1934 who were on tour in Calcuta at the time. In 1935, she moved to London seeking more substantial roles. Clifford Fischer brought his ‘Follies Bergere’ to London and she won an audition as a dancer in a specialty act. The “Follies” later had a six-month contract to open on Broadway in New York.
By the time the Follies returned to Europe Una had met, fallen in love with and married Lee Mortimer, a well know columnist for the New York Mirror and author of the best selling “New York Confidential.” Una continued her singing career in New York and New Jersey, appearing solo and with name bands. In 1939, she undertook an extensive tour of European and Mediterranean cities. She was appearing at the Shepard Hotel in Cairo when World War Two broke out, forcing her return to New York and to her work in entertainment.
She was invited to undergo a screen test in Hollywood. She did a lot of bit parts, voice over singing and radio drama parts including the Lux Radio Theater. She met many of the friends she had known in New York. One of these, a young actor, Jim Gagnon, was doing extra work and later ‘talking’ roles and finally a supporting role in “Riders of the Purple Sage.” Una and Jim fell in love and married. The Pearl Harbor attack quickly placed Jim Gagnon in a 1A draft status and he decided to accept an offer for naval aviation cadet training.
Una became a Navy wife and ultimately mother of three children: Gaye, Kevin and Pamela. Jim stayed in the Navy through the Korean War, rising to the rank of Commander. After leaving the Navy, Jim accepted a position as airport manager in El Paso, Texas. Una and Jim were divorced in 1960.
In 1964, Una married G. Ross Carpenter, who at that time was the General Manager for American Airlines in El Paso. Una had long been interested in the game of bridge. She was member of the ACBL and became well known in El Paso Bridge circles. Carpenter retired in 1972 and they moved to New Zealand to build a home and develop some coastal land they owned there. They returned to San Clemente, Ca. in 1974. Una continued her interest in bridge, becoming a Life Master and had many wonderful friends with this same interest. She was very active in many functions of ACBL unit 538 such as ‘Sunshine Lady’, editor of their newsletter, ‘Second Sunday,’ and as member of the board if directors.
In 1988, Una contracted Parkinson’s Disease and, although this slowed her down somewhat, she was very active in bridge circles through the year 2000.
She is survived by her husband, Ross, in Port Aransas, Texas; her son, Kevin, in Fort Fort Worth, Texas; her daughters, Gaye Howorth of Topeka and Pamela McVey of Canon City, Colo.; and her brother, Larrymore Wise of Perth, Australia.
