Thomas Frederick Davis, 62, passed away Friday, Feb. 21. Born in Great Barrington, Mass., on Aug. 5, 1940. He joined the U.S. Army in 1959, where he spent 10 of his 12 years in the service with U.S. embassy assignments. After his successful completion of the Defense Intelligence School, he was assigned to diplomatic missions with U.S. embassies in Algeria, Afghanistan, Lebanon and Romania. He was also assigned to the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy, where he completed his military career.
Mr. Davis was general manager for the Cielo Vista Apartments and was a member of the Ascarate Golf Association, an NRA life member and a member of the Paso Del Norte Gun Collection Association.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Helen Davis; his children, Deanna Maxwell, Alison Davis, Jessica Perry and Thomas F. Davis Jr.; and by seven grandchildren. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with full military honors. Mr. Davis’ family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, to Hospice of El Paso and to his many friends who provided support.

Philip Provencio, 35, passed away Monday, Feb. 24, following an extended illness.
Born in the U.S. Panama Canal Zone Nov. 25, 1967, he attended Mesita Elementary and El Paso High and graduated from UTEP with a degree in business. He held several sales positions in San Antonio and Austin before returning to El Paso to work with Thompson Educational Systems, handling a territory which encompassed the Panhandle and West Texas areas.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Maria Luisa. He is survived by his parents, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Juan and Mary Lou Provencio; his sisters, Marti, Teresa an Teeni of El Paso; his brothers, Jim of Las Vegas, and Rick and Eddie of El Paso; his nephew, Ed; his nieces, Kelli of Houston and Kari of College Station; and by special family member Rachel Olguin of El Paso.
Mr. Provencio also leaves behind his godparents Robert and Mady Schreiner of Alamogordo and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins of the Provencio and Samaniego families. He also leaves behind his two beloved Labrador Retrievers, Hannah and Seamus.
Memorial donations may be made in his name to Hospice of El Paso, St. Patrick’s Altar Society or the El Paso Humane Society.
His family would like to extend their thanks to Hospice during his final weeks.

El Paso geologist Jack Richards dies at 76
George L. (Jack) Richards passed away at his ranch near Wimberley, Texas, on March 7, 2003, surrounded by his family.
He was born in El Paso, Texas, on July 18, 1926, to George E. and Mamie O. Richards. Mr. Richards graduated from Austin High School in El Paso in 1943 before joining the U. S. Navy pre-flight training program from 1944-1946. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in 1948 from Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy (UTEP) with a major in Geology and served as President of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.
He married Marjorie Ann Carlin, to whom he was married for 43 years, and pursued his professional career as a geologist beginning with Standard Oil Company of Texas. In 1964, he joined Coastal States Gas Producing Company where he advanced to Senior Vice-President. He was with Bright and Company in San Antonio from 1978-1996.
Jack is survived by his wife, Lois Toole Richards; his daughter, Julie Richards McNeil, and her husband Michael of Corpus Christi; his son, Jack Richards, and his wife Vicki of Oklahoma City; brother, James V. Richards, and his wife Pam of Houston; sister, Mayre Sue Overstreet, and her husband Charles of El Paso; grandchildren Patrick McNeil, Kathleen McNeil, Christopher Richards and Clarke Richards; his wife’s children, Michael Edmond, Timothy Edmond and Jane Edmond Weber and their spouses; six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Jack was active in both his professional and local community. He proudly spoke of his family and their Texas lineage – his grandfather, Alonzo Oden, was a Texas Ranger. He was a member of both The Sons of the Republic of Texas and The Texas Society Sons of the American Revolution. He was an Emeritus Member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and member of both the Houston and South Texas Geological Societies. He previously served on various boards, including most recently, the Petroleum Club of San Antonio and St. Stephen’s Episcopal School.
Jack was an active member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Wimberley, Texas, where his memorial service was held.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to St. Stephen’s Episcopal School located at 6000 FM 3237, Wimberley, Texas 78676.

Dora M. Montez passed away Friday, Feb. 28. Born on Feb. 6, 1931, she was a lifelong El Paso resident. She graduated from Bowie High School in 1949, and later earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from UTEP.
She was preceded in death by her son, Orlando H. Montez. She is survived by her husband, Javier Montez; and by her daughter, Marcia M. Smith and her family, husband Randall J. Smith and their son, Tristan W. Smith. She is also survived by her sisters, Inez Rivera and Margarita Rey.
The family wishes to express their thanks to Dr. Leah Eberley for her care and compassion. Interment took place in Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Phyllis M. Kingsley passed away Monday, Feb. 24. She attended Baystate Medical Center School of Nursing an became a registered nurse. After the outbreak of WWII, she became a commissioned U.S. Navy Lieutenant, and was stationed at the Brooklyn Naval Yard in Camp Perry, Va., in San Diego and at the Fleet Hospital on Guam Island in the Pacific. On Dec. 28, 1944, she married Commander Neil E. Kingsley in Honolulu. Upon her discharge from the Navy in 1946, she assumed the role of Navy wife.
Her family was stationed at Fort Bliss, and she served as a “Gray Lady” at William Beaumont Army Medical Center for more than 30 years.
Mrs. Kingsley is survived by her son, Charles, and her daughter, Pamela.
Memorial donations may be made in her name to any charity.

Maria Teresa Baca Apodaca passed away Sunday, Feb. 23. A member of the Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Altar Society, she was the first Hispanic president elected to the Catholic School Board, and the first president elected to two consecutive terms, in Beverly Hills, Calif. She owned and operated a catering business in Beverly Hills, La Feria restaurant and La Feria Plaza in El Paso.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Raul Apodaca; by her son, Raul M. Apodaca; by her brothers, Judge Jose J. Baca and Adrian E. Baca; and by her sister, Victoria B. Dennis.
Memorial donations may be made in her name to St. Jude Hospital and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Robert Bryan Cox Sr., 77, passed away Sunday, March 16, after suffering a heart attack two weeks earlier. Cox was the founder of El Paso’s Charcoaler Drive-In restaurants. At one point, there were two Charcoalers on N. Mesa and one on Montana Avenue. Today, one Charcoaler remains, and is located on N. Mesa just north of Mesa Hills Drive.
He served during WWII in the 536th Amphibious Tractor Battalion, with distinguished honors. He drove an amphibious tractor during the first assault wave on five islands in the Pacific Ocean, including Okinawa and Leyte.
Cox began his career in the restaurant business in Oklahoma City at the age of 23, and opened a Charcoaler in 1961 after relocating his family to El Paso so that his eldest son could find relief from asthma in the dry, warm climate.
Charcoaler was the first restaurant in the city to use an intercom for customers to place orders.
He was president of the El Paso Chapter of the Restaurant Association and state director of the Texas Restaurant Association. He served as an elder in the First Christian Church of El Paso, enjoyed his pursuits of golfing and gardening and attended many reunions with his Army buddies from the 536th battalion. He was holding the office of secretary for his battalion group at the time of his death.
Cox was preceded in death by his grandson, Travis Cox. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Wilma Cox; his children: Sharon Cox of Fort Worth, Bob Cox Jr. of El Paso, Bill and Therese Cocx of Fort Worth and Susan and Doug Woodul of Kingwood; eight grandchildren: John Birk, Mark Birk, Jennifer Birk, William Woodul, Megan Woodul, Christi Cox, Jillian Cox and Taylor Cox; his brother, James P. Cox Jr.; and by his brother-in-law, Bud Waggoner.
Interment took place at Memory Gardens of the Valley in Santa Teresa.

Lee Ross Capshaw passed away Saturday, March 15.
He was the director of Fine Arts for the El Paso Independent School District for 27 years. He served in the South Pacific during WWII as aviation radar/radioman first class in the U.S. Navy. He was president of the American Federation of Musicians, local 466.
Mr. Capshaw is survived by his wife, Lucille; three children: Ida Steadman, Raqndall Capshaw and Kenneth Capshaw; grandchildren: Michael Hill, Anita, Sidney and Russell Steadman, Claire Jopling, Dinah, Randall, Krista and Amber Capshaw, Stephanie, Brooke and Reed Capshaw; six great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Bonnie Teckemeyer and Johnny and Bobby Capshaw.
Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to the UTEP Music Department Scholarship Fund.

U.S. Army (Ret.) W01 John F. Haley, 80, passed away Wednesday, March 19.
He retired from the U.S. Army after having served 20 years, including tours of duty during WWII, the Korean War and the U.N. campaign in Africa.
He was also retired from Rust Tractor Caterpillar and Tractor Parts and Supply after 23 years. He was a member of Fort Bliss Chapel 2 and the B.P.O. Elks #187.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Agnes Marie Haley Rosenberg; by his parents, John and Agnes Marie Haley; brothers, Charles and Edward Haley; sisters, Claire Ricco and Margaret Prichard.
Haley is survived by his wife of 32 years, Clara S. Haley; daughter, Theresa Anne Haley; stepsons, James B. Keelly III (Suzanne) of Houston, Thomas F. Kelly of El Paso, Timothy W. Kelly (Vicki) of Independence, Mo.; stepdaughters, Jacqueline K. Hourigan (Stephen) of El Paso, Karen M. Diver (Michael) of New Braunfels, Texas, Elizabeth A. Lenz (Ken) of Eagle, Idaho, sister, Catherine Punda of Brookville, Penn; sister-in-law Florence Haley of Fredley, Minn.; godson John Haley of Coon Rapids, Minn; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
His family wishes to thank Dr. Foote, Dr. Strader, Dr. Young, Dr. Vann, Dr. Theresa Reed, La Mariposa Hospice of El Paso and the caring people at Quantum.
Memorial contributions may be made to the El Paso Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association or the Korean Memorial Foundation in Washington, D.C.

Ramon Fierro, 86, passed away Monday, March 17. He was born in La Union, N.M.
He was a WWII veteran, serving the U.S. Army in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany from 1944 to 1945. He served with the division caught in the Battle of the Bulge, and he participated in the liberation of a concentration camp.
Fierro was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Purple Heart, E.A.M.E. Theater Ribbon and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge.
He worked for Brown & Olds Plumbing and retired from the El Paso National Bank.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Josefa Maria; brothers, Francisco, Soilo and Antonio; sisters, Vicenta Matamoros and Dolores Mata. He is survived by his wife, San Juana; sons, Ramon Jr. (Martha), Manuel (Esther), Alfonso (Betty), Hector (Belen) and Jose Francisco (Diana); daughter Rosalia Simental (Frank); stepdaughters, Reyna Ocon and Norma Rojas; 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
