Rose Rancich Porter
Born Oct. 1, 1912, in Leadville, Colorado; died Feb. 29, 2004 at her home in Fabens. Porter was one of five children of Ante (Tony) and Andja Rancich, of Dalmatia, (Croatia) Austria.
Preceded in death by her siblings Ann Rancich Daffron, Mary Rancich, Michael Joseph Rancich, and George Anthony Rancich.
The Rancich family moved from Globe, Ariz. to settle in El Paso's Lower Valley, near Fabens, in 1916. Tony Rancich settled on seventeen uncultivated acres. He, with his family, built a home and cleared the land, slowly nurturing crops from the untamed soil. Tony Rancich believed in the American dream and the responsibilities that came with the freedom. He was successful in his endeavors and added continually to his acreage, becoming a farmer whose integrity and respect was renowned.
Porter followed the guidance of her parents’ strong values. After winning the crown as beauty queen in a countywide contest, she attended business school. During the war effort of WWII, she took a job at the local cotton gin as bookkeeper. She was so proficient at the adding machines of the time that the business was required to purchase new updated machines to keep up with her accuracy.
In 1936, Porter married George Clinton Porter Jr., who preceded her in death in 1959. He was the son of Sue Bowden and George Clinton Porter Sr., of Fabens. Rose and George's daughter, Andja Sue, died in infancy.
Porter is survived by the following of their children: Rose Marie Baumann, George Clinton Porter III, Betty Cowart, Brenda Louise Price; James Brian Porter, Toni Kay Porter, and Rita Rae Porter. There are 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Porter continued to farm after George's untimely death. She maintained her faith as a lifelong Roman Catholic. She will be remembered by many for her spiritual gifts wherein she said the prayers of the Holy Rosary for the benefit of another. When she died, at age 91, she resided on the same original 17 acres that her father had settled. She is buried at the Evergreen-Alameda Cemetery, where her other family members are also interred.
Memorials may be made to Hospice or charity of one's choice.
