William Jennings Bryan Odom

SHERMAN -- Graveside services for William Jennings Bryan Odom, 82, of Sherman will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 12, 2001, at Cedarlawn Memorial Park.

The Reverend David Cook of Pine Crest Bible Church in Longview, Texas will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Dannel Funeral Home.

Mr. Odom was born August 19, 1918, in Sherman, the son of Joe Odom and Pearl Click. He graduated from Sherman High School and received a B.A. from Austin College.

During World War II, Mr. Odom was in the Army Engineers and Air Corps. He was employed by Ross Manufacturing Company and traveled in Texas and the Southwest for 50 years selling plumbing specialties.

Mr. Odom married Wilma Doris Kirby on November 27, 1946, in Denison. He was a member of Central Christian Church.

Preceded in death by his parents; brother, Pete Odom; granddaughter, Sara Odom.

Mr. Odom is survived by his wife of Sherman; sons, Rick Odom of Duluth, Georgia, Billy Odom of Hudson, N.H. and Mike Odom of Sherman; brother, Howard Odom of Frisco, Texas; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Dannel Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, and other times, at the family residence.

Edna Earle Roling Wester

Edna Earle Roling Wester was born March 11, 1918, in Amity, Arkansas. Her family moved to Durant when she was a baby and she attended elementary grades at Russell High School in Durant and graduated from Durant High School.

She married Truman Wester in 1937, in Durant, Oklahoma and they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on October 30, 2000.

The Wester family lived in Ardmore, Edmond, Holdenville, Durant and Norman, all in Oklahoma, and came to Denison and Grayson County College in 1967.

Edna was preceded in death by her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Earle G. Roling of Denison, Texas and also by a sister, Freda Barbe of Santa Cruz, California.

Edna attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Oklahoma for one year, but then quit school to help her husband through college. She did work a few years at Grayson County College as a library assistant, but her real joy was caring for the three daughters and helping with the grandchildren. She was a devoted homemaker for her husband and family.

During recent years, she had been in failing health and did most of her worship through television programming.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Denison and the Denison Lions Club.

Services for Mrs. Wester will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church with the Reverend Keith Barbee officiating. The family will be at Bratcher Funeral Home from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Pallbearers will be Dr. C.J. Smith, Frank Graves, McAlister, Lyndol Irby, Bill Ashburn and Dr. Wayne Delaney. Honorary pallbearers will be Albert W. Brown, Bill Wilcox and Jack Lilley.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Bratcher Funeral Home.

Any memorial may be made to the Dr. Truman Wester Presidential Scholarship Fund, 6101 Grayson Drive, Denison, Texas 75020.

Fern Roberts

DENISON -- Fern Roberts, 92, of Denison, Texas and formerly of East Jordan, died on Tuesday, April 10, 2001, in Denison, Texas, where her daughter, Mary, lives.

Fern was born on March 4, 1909, on the family farm near East Jordan, the daughter of Hanson Ed and Alida E. (Rogers) Hutton. On March 5, 1932, in Detroit, she married Curt Roberts of Hazard, Kentucky. They lived in Detroit where they raised five daughters.

Fern was a homemaker most of her life, but later worked at the Detroit League for the Handicapped for 20 years before retirement. They returned to the farm in East Jordan in 1966, and raised sweet corn and berries until Curt's eyesight began to fail. They spent winters with daughters in the Detroit area. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and reading. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star F.J. Lewis-Mark Chapter #213.

Fern is survived by five children, Peggy Whitehead of Gainesville, Texas, June Freydl and her husband, Robert of East Jordan, Ruth Beaubien of Gainesville, Texas, Mary Whitehead and her husband, Glenn of Denison, Texas and Judith Roberts of Little Elm, Texas; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her cousins, Marguerite Stokes and Phyllis Lilak, both of East Jordan; three nieces, Marietta (Bill) Kusey of Mio, Shirley (Walt) Drouse of Piconning and Barbara (Bill) Oakes of West Branch. She was preceded in death by her husband, Curt, in 1997, as well as a grandson and her sister, Ina Down.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Gainesville Memorial Hospital Chapel in Gainesville, Texas.

Jack D. Hopper

SHERMAN -- Jack D. Hopper, 66-year-old Sherman resident, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001 at Wilson N. Jones Medical Center.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 13 in the Chapel on the Hill at Cedarlawn Memorial Park. Officiating will be the Rev. Allen Snider of Key Memorial United Methodist Church. Burial be in Cedarlawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Hopper was born on Oct. 2, 1934, in Whitewright, Texas, the son of Royal Dee and Mildred Dean Hopper. He attended Sherman schools.

On Aug. 5, 1955, he married Carolyn Wilson at the First Baptist Church of Sherman.

Jack went to work for Texas Telephone in 1952. He retired in 1991 from General Telephone after 39 years of service. Later, he worked as a co-owner of Mentzel's Appliance in Sherman. Jack was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sherman. He enjoyed woodworking and adding to his various collections.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Hopper of the home in Sherman; son, Mike Hopper of Sherman; daughter, Terri Hopper of Sherman; three grandsons, Justin, Jacky and Andrew Hopper, all of Sherman; three nephews and one niece.

The family will be at Waldo Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials may be made to the ASCC-Autism Society of Collin County Book Fund, 4909 W. Park Boulevard, Suite 103, Box 107 Plano, Texas 75093 or Key Memorial United Methodist Church, 901 E. Houston, Sherman, Texas 75090.

Billy Monroe Magar

GORDONVILLE -- Billy Monroe Magar slipped gently into the arms of the Lord on Monday, April 9, at 6:30 p.m., at Wilson N. Jones Medical Center in Sherman. The funeral will be held Friday, 10:30 a.m. at Sherwood Shores Chapel. Burial will be at 3 p.m., Restland Cemetery in Dallas. The Reverend David Farbishel will officiate at both services.

Bill was born on May 4, 1916, in Sealy, Texas to Gladys Ball Magar and Bishop Monroe Magar.

He attended Texas Tech University and North Texas Normal School. Bill married Dorothy Eileen Hancock on July 9, 1938, and they were married 56 years. Bill was in insurance claims, working for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company for over 35 years. As a young man, he worked briefly for the Sherman Democrat as a reporter.

Bill was preceded in death by his son, Jack Monroe Magar in 1958; and his wife, Dorothy Magar in 1994.

He is survived by his son, David Lloyd Magar; his daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Goodin Magar; his granddaughters, Katherine Amanda Magar and Sarah Elizabeth Magar; and his daughter, Barbara Louise Magar.

Services are under the direction of Huff Funeral Home, 409 West Main Street, Whitesboro, Texas.

George A. Gentry

SHERMAN -- Services for George A. Gentry of Sherman, 69-year-old longtime employee of the Country Corner Convenience Stores, were held Wednesday, April 4, in Waldo Funeral Home Chapel. He passed away Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Wilson N. Jones Medical Center.

Bob Sholl officiated with burial in the Veterans Section of West Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Gentry was born on Nov. 8, 1931, in Leonard, Texas.

He served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years.

A sweet man, known simply as "George", served Country Corner Convenience Stores tirelessly for 22 years. His co-workers and customers were his second family. He never met a stranger and was loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Surviving are his wife, Joy Gentry of Sherman; daughters, Terri Strobl of Pottsboro and Cheryl Gentry of Largo, Fla.; son, Mike Gentry of Tyler; and three grandchildren.

He is truly missed, but will never be forgotten.

Ruby M. Simpson

SHERMAN -- Graveside services for Ruby M. Simpson, 83, of Sherman will be held at 12 noon on Friday, April 13 in Tioga Cemetery. She died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at the Spring Seasons Post Oak Nursing Center.

The Reverend Roy Duff of Pottsboro will officiate.

Mrs. Simpson was born on March 20, 1918, in Arkansas, the daughter of Jim and Ellen Gillum Davis. In 1958, she married Alton Simpson. He preceded her in death.

Surviving are her son, Jim Graves and his wife, Donna of Southmayd, Texas; sisters, Pearl Mangum and Goldie Cantrell, both of Tioga, and Oleta Hart of Nederland, Texas; stepsons, Randy Simpson of Pottsboro and Herold Simpson of Fort Worth; stepdaughter, Debbie Claflin of Denison; 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

The family will be at Waldo Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 12.

William Henry Burden

CELINA -- William Henry Burden of Celina, 68-year-old rancher and farmer, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Wilson N. Jones Medical Center in Sherman.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 12 in the First Baptist Church of Gunter. Bro. Scott Jordan and Bro. Danny Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Gunter Cemetery.

Mr. Burden was born on June 30, 1932, in Orangeville, Texas, the son of Clarence Burden and Bonnie Hopper Burden. He married Ann Thomas on March 15, 1952, in Trenton, Texas. The couple had just recently celebrated their 49th year of marriage.

He was a Baptist.

Pallbearers will be Bill Stelzer, T.J. Cross, Randy Streetman, Matt Thomas, Rusty Arrington and Chris Stelzer. Honorary pallbearers will be J.B. Stelzer, Lewis Robinson, J.M. Bray, Bill Arrington, E.C. Franklin, Frank Gravley and Forest Fritcher.

Surviving are his wife, Ann Burden of Celina; daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Ralph Reed, Debbie and Danny Miller, and Pam and Dennis Bostick, all of Gunter; son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd and Pam Burden of Gunter; seven grandchildren, Lynn Reed and wife, Amy of Sherman, Charlotte Reed of Gunter, Danny Joe and wife, Trube Miller and Randy Miller, all of Colbert, Okla., Roxie Miller, Jennifer Burden and Brent Burden, all of Gunter; one great-grandchild, Ryan Reed of Sherman; five sisters, Alma Ruth and husband, Alvie Boles of Rosedale, Okla., Julia Shaw of Honey Grove, Mary Jernigan and husband, Jimmy of Goldwaite, Dollie and husband, Ray Hall of Celeste and Martha and husband, Blanten Hancock of Leonard; two brothers, Bobby Burden of North Little Rock, Ark. and James and wife, Linda Burden of Pottsboro; many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Burden was preceded in death by one brother, C.B. Burden; one sister, Paula Jean Johnson; and his parents.

The family will be at Flesher Funeral Home in Van Alstyne, and other times, at the family residence.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Gunter Summer Mission program.

Melba Jean Bullock

SHERMAN -- Graveside services for Melba Jean Hammonds Bullock, 78, of Sherman who died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Wilson N. Jones Medical Center, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 13, at Blue Ridge Cemetery.

The Reverend Billy Hackler of Crutchfield Heights Baptist Church will officiate. Dannel Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Bullock was born February 11, 1923, in Van Alstyne, Texas, the daughter of J.W. Hammonds and Sarah Ann McCoy Hammonds. She graduated from Van Alstyne High School. On July 30, 1949, she married R.J. Bullock in Sherman.

Mrs. Bullock retired from M&P Bank in Sherman, where she was a receptionist. She was a life member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and member of Crutchfield Heights Baptist Church.

Preceded in death by her husband, she is survived by daughter, Delia Johnston and her husband, Tim of Sherman; two granddaughters, Nicole Johnston and Tara Johnston; brother, Veneble Hammons of Sherman; sister, Joyce Ballard of Austin; and several nieces and nephews.

If desired, memorials may be made to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, P.O. Box 505, Sherman, Texas 75091 or Crutchfield Heights Baptist Church, 600 S. Dewey, Sherman, Texas 75090.

The family will receive friends at Dannel Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 12th.

Billy Neel Wilkinson

DENISON -- Graveside services for Billy Neel Wilkinson, 62-year-old Denison resident, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 13 in Cedarlawn Memorial Park in Sherman. He died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Texoma Medical Center in Denison.

The Rev. Kevin Mayfield will officiate.

Mr. Wilkinson was born on May 30, 1938, in Fannin County, Texas, the son of Raymond and Virginia Wilkinson. He moved with his family to Denison in 1956.

He was a minister with the Pentecostal faith, and was a member of Raynal Tabernacle Church.

Surviving are his son, Bobby Neel Wilkinson and his wife, Barbara of Bonham, Texas; two sisters, Linda Stewart and her husband, Darrell of Denison and Diana Armstrong and her husband, Rev. James Armstrong of Pottsboro; five grandchildren, Tasha Wilkinson, Cody Wilkinson, Christen Cory, Amanda Cory and Joshua Cory; great-grandchild, Anthony Babb; and niece, Karisha Stewart.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Wayne Wilkinson; and his parents, Raymond and Virginia Wilkinson.

Bratcher Funeral Home in Denison has charge of arrangements.

The family will be at 540 Lazy Ike Lane in Pottsboro.
