Genevieve (Thrasher) Russell was born on May 8, 1918 to Myrtle Crumby and Frank Thrasher in Commerce, Texas. She attended SHS from 1931-1935. In May 1937 she married Eugene Aubrey Russell of Sherman, Texas. In between WW II and the Korean War, Genevieve gave birth to three children, two boys and a girl. These gifts from God were the love and everlasting love of her life. Jerry Russell, her oldest son, lives in Sherman, Texas, Roger Russell lives in Ajiji Jalisco, Mexico and Donna Russell, who lives in Cortez, Colorado. All of her children graduated from college and are living happy, productive lives and are the greatest testament to her life on earth. Her life was a celebration of nature and family. Working in her yard and staying in touch with family kept her days filled. She was blessed with a group of very supportive neighbors, especially Chris Skotnik and Rick Duhaime. Some of her happiest days were spent working in her yard among her plants. These people were an essential support system that in later years included the Advantix Home Care. From this crew came many caring workers. Especially precious in her life was her primary caregiver Clara Stringer who made the last years of her life filled with laughter and love.

Equally necessary to her day-to-day comfort was Coleen, also known as “Red”. Faithfully she was always there for her in good times and bad.

Genevieve Thrasher Russell left this world early Wednesday morning. She is at peace and leaves behind her many people and a cat named Ebony that will miss her very much.

Her work career included Texas Women Motor Corp. (1943-1944), and after the war, she worked with an attorney and a real estate adjuster. Her last and most noteworthy employment was with Austin College from 1962-1972 as an executive secretary to Fred Detweiler, Austin College Comptroller.

BETANCOURT
Rosa Reyes Carrillo Betancourt, our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother joined the Lord on Saturday, August 21, 2004, at the age 85. She was looking forward to celebrating her 86th birthday in October and her 70th wedding anniversary in November. Rosa was a remarkable woman and tragically lost her father during the Mexican revolution right before her birth on October 4, 1918, in Zacatecas, Mexico. She was raised by her single mother, Rosaura Reyes Carrillo and her older brother Pablo and younger sister Josefina, in San Antonio, Texas and Chicago, Illinois. At her mother’s side, she watched her mother struggle with hard jobs like picking cotton and selling homemade tacos in the early morning hours to laborers that were restoring downtown San Antonio during FDR’s Public Works Act (WPA). As a young girl she also discovered her love of dance and music and would sneak into the downtown theaters in hopes of dancing on stage one day. Well somehow, by God’s grace, she danced on stage at the opening ceremony of the Texas Theater. Rosa married her childhood sweetheart, Wenceslao Betancourt Rodriguez from San Luis, Potosi, Mexico, on November 3, 1935, at the young age of sixteen. Together they celebrated the births of two daughters, Sylvia Betancourt Alanis, wife of the late Dr. Artemio Auturo Alanis and parents to 10 children and 17 grandchildren. The youngest daughter, Eudelia Betancourt Flores, married Tom Flores and welcomed 2 children. Throughout her marriage, Rosa took care of her ill mother and also helped raise her deceased sister’s son from the age of two. Her devout Catholic faith and her love for “La Virgin Guadalupe” made her a strong and giving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Rosa also spent a lot of her time cooking for 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was an amazing, authentic, Mexican chef! Everyday she would scour the city markets for the best ingredients and insisted on making everything from scratch. She picked the hottest chilies, the sweetest canela, the firmest and ripest tomatoes for her famous “chile japones.” Especially around the holidays, she would cook for close to 100 family members and friends and became known for “grandma’s” mole, chile rellenos, tamales, gorditas, rajas de chile poblano, capirotada, avena, arroz con leche, etc. Everyone fell in love with her and her cooking and in return, her eyes would always gleam with joy! Her heart and her home were always open and her love of cooking was her gift to all of those who became a part of her life...even if it was only for a day.Visitation will be held at The Angelus Funeral Home, 1119 N. St. Mary’s on Tuesday, August 24, from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Rosary will be held on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 617 South Santa Rosa, at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be offered on Wednesday, August 25, at 9:30 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 617 South Santa Rosa. Burial will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
