Mr. Keeney was born January 30, 1939 in Coleman, Texas where he grew up and attended school. He was the son of Raymond Keeney and Catherine Lobstein Calhoun. He moved to Glen Rose two years ago and was a member of First Baptist Church in Glen Rose. He was also a member of the Senior Center there and the Silver Tigers, a senior citizens sports booster group in Glen Rose.

Survivors include one son, Jessie Wayne Keeney of Austin; one daughter, Norma June Keeney of Austin; five sisters, Frankie McDaniel of Granbury, Ann Kostic of New Jersey, Dorothy Bradshaw, Norma Spykes and Margaret Peacock all of Abilene; two brothers, Larry Keeney of Taft and Kenneth Keeney of Lubbock; seventeen nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Pamela Woods of Glen Rose; fifteen great-nieces and great-nephews; two aunts, Gladys Slayton and Christine Turner both of Coleman; one uncle, Rube Lobstein of Bangs.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Aubry Keeney in 1983.

Family visitation will be held from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Coleman Senior Center.

JESSE WILLIAMS, age 82, died Sunday, December 10, 2000 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Sam Wilson officiating and assisted by Rev. Raymond Jones. Burial will follow at Coleman Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Jesse Williams was born May 12, 1918 in Shields, Texas and was one of eight children of John A. and Willie Lee McElrath Williams. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. Jesse was married to Mabel Eppler on December 3, 1939 in the Shields Baptist Church. He loved his family and he loved farming and raising livestock. He was also a mechanic and an oil field worker. He was known as a handyman. As he and Mabel worked to raise five boys he would take on jobs to raise money to take care of the family through many lean years. Water systems, welding jobs, fence building, building construction or demolition, custom farming, tractor overhauls, oilfield jobs and electrical installation or repair were areas he would tackle with confidence and pride.

Jesse was co-owner of a service station and mechanic shop at the crossroads in Shields until the "new highway" construction forced its demolition. He always stressed the importance of getting a good education to his boys. For several years he served as a school board member in Santa Anna. He was proud of the Santa Anna school system. During the time he served as president of the Board of Trustees his appreciation for administrators and teachers grew even more.

Jesse taught values to his boys as they grew up. He stressed the importance of "doing more than you agreed to do" when working for someone else. His word and a handshake would seal any agreement he made because his word was his bond. He would also say, "if you don’t have time to do a job right the first time, when will you ever have time to do it over again." He was a worker and worked from early to late as long as the weather allowed. He kept this up until about a year ago.

He was also a family man. He supported his children as they participated in activities and monitored their successes and failures. He continued to attend activities of his grandchildren and even went to Panther Creek football games with his oxygen on, sitting in the car, until just a few weeks ago.

Jesse never gave up. He was a fighter. When farming stopped being profitable several years ago, he and Mabel just worked harder and longer to try to make ends meet. When he broke his back, he fought back to health. Although he had many health problems through the years, he continued to fight until his health problems overcame him and he could no longer fight. His love of family, work and life itself were guideposts for his family.

Jesse will be missed by all who knew him. But his legacy lives on in his loving family and all he represented.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel Williams of Coleman; five sons, Donald (and wife Linda) Williams of Midland; Leland (and wife Gaynell) Williams of Dickinson; Gary (and wife Patty) Williams of Georgetown; Larry (and wife Shirley) Williams of Georgetown; and Danny Williams of Coleman; one sister, Mildred Arthur of San Marcos; thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
