Helen Pekara

Helen Pekara, 87, of Denton died Friday, June 30, 2000, at Denton Regional Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 26, 1913, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Thomas and Katherine Waselewska Mazurek. She married Joseph Pekara on Aug. 19, 1934, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He died Feb. 8, 1997.

Service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 3, at Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home. The Rev. Mel Bessellieu will officiate.

Survivors include two daughters, Jean Pekara of Denton and Nancy Pekara-Gardiner of Albuquerque, N.M.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Nellie Pratt

Nellie Pratt, 85, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, in Denton.

She was born Dec. 30, 1914, in Plano.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 3, at Restland Memorial Park. Restland Funeral Home in Dallas is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include a brother, Clyde Sims. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe E. Pratt.

Mary Smith

Rapid City, S.D. -- Mary B. "Cissie" Smith, 65, of Rapid City, S.D., died Friday, June 30, 2000, at Denton Good Samaritan Village.

She was born Jan. 17, 1935, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Wilbur Burgess and Anne McCarthy Noel.

She worked as a teacher in Montessori schools. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Rapid City.

Service will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 3, at the Denton Good Samaritan Chapel. Justin Kvanli will officiate. DeBerry Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Ann's Haven VNA Hospice of Denton, or the Hospice of the Black Hills in South Dakota.

Survivors include her husband, Paul L. Smith of Rapid City, S.D.; two daughters, Melody J. Krahulec of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Anne M. Day of Spring; three sons, Christopher R. Smith of Lewisville, Timothy P.L. Smith of Hastings, Neb., and Patrick N. Smith of Springfield, Pa.; three sisters, Sarah Moorehead of St. Augustine, Fla., Jean Roland of Central Point, Ore., and Anne Yeager of Bloomington, Minn.; and 21 grandchildren.

Tracy Lynn Damron

Tracy Lynn Damron, 28, of Denton, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at Denton Community Hospital.

He was born Jan. 21, 1972, in Fort Worth. He was a tape librarian.

Survivors include his son, Triston Damron of Watauga; and his mother, Lucy Damron of Denton.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon today, Monday, July 3, at Goen-Hudgens Funeral Home of Denton.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today, Monday, July 3, at Fulton Cemetery in Walnut Springs. Terry Collins will officiate.

Max Wiseman

Collinsville - Max Wiseman, 63, of Collinesville, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, in Collinsville.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2000, in the chapel of Huff/Slay Funeral Home in Pilot Point. Perry Kemplin will officiate. Burial will be in Tioga Cemetery, Tioga.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 4, at the funeral home.

He was born Nov. 3, 1936, in Rensslar, Ind. to Clinton and Violet Logston Wiseman. He married Malinda Cundiff on July 14, 1980, in Montague County, Texas.

Mr. Wiseman was a heavy equipment operator.

He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife of Collinsville; five daughters, Rhonda Allen of Gladwin, Mich., Teresa Hanchett of Lansing, Mich., Paula Fouts and Marsha Clem, both of Harrison, Mich., and Patricia Schoormaker of Gladwin, Mich.; a brother, Dale Wiseman of Morrocco, Ind.; and a sister, Janet Wilson of Griffith, Ind.; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

David A. Flagg

David A. Flagg, 61, of Denton, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at his residence, after a lengthy illness.

He was born June 13, 1939, in Worcester, Mass., to Florina and Joseph Flagg. He married Elaine Hubbell on March 13, 1969 and they divorced on good terms in December 1992.

Mr. Flagg drove a truck for 37 years, lately for Air Ride Trucking, and retired in 1998. He was a U.S. Marine from 1956 to 1961 and earned five Purple Hearts during the Vietname War.

There are no services planned. The family will be at Schmitz-Floyd-Andersen Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight, Monday, July 3, for visitation.

Survivors include his ex-wife of Denton; three daughters, Debbie Flagg, Renae Scoggins and Christine Seymour, all of Denton; a brother, Donald Bordon of San Antonio; five grandsons, Eddie, Joey, Joshua, Benjamin and Timmy, all of Denton; and six granddaughters, Samantha, Cassie, Brittney, Rachel, April and Jessica, all of Denton.

Emma Curry

Emily Frances ``Emma" Curry, 100, of Denton, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at her residence.

She was born Feb. 9, 1900, in Little Elm, Texas, to Phillip and Julia Nail Hill. On Feb. 4, 1925, she married Charlie Curry in Denton, Texas. He preceded her in death.

She is survived by son Preston and daughter-in-law Norma Curry of Denton; sister-in-law, Mrs. Lorene Hill of Denton; three granddaughters, Patti Dunfield, Mikel Curry and Kelli McCarthy; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 4, 2000, in the chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors with the Rev. Bill Smith officiating.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. the morning of the service. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Denton.

DeBerry Funeral Directors of Denton are in charge of arrangements.

C.R. Henderson

Sanger -- C.R. Henderson, 82, of Sanger, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at Sam Rayborn Memorial Nursing Home in Bonham.

He was born Dec. 13, 1917, in Sweetwater.

Mr. Henderson was a telegrapher for Santa Fe Railroad. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Order of the Easter Star.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, at Coker Funeral Home in Sanger. Masonic graveside services will follow in Sanger Cemetery.

Survivors include two step-sons, Thomas Dawson of Bremerton, Wash., and Roger Ellis Jr. of Fort Worth; step-daughter, Lana R. Hart of Burelson; six step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Sammie Magic Jr.

Sammie Lee Magic Jr., 45, of Denton, died Friday, June 30, 2000, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 6, 1954, in Denton, to Sammie Lee Magic Sr. and Ossie Lee Magic.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, at Peoples Funeral Home in Denton.

Survivors include his mother of Denton; and sister, Emma Payton of Caruthersville, Mo.

Lester Thompson

Sunset -- Lester Lee Thompson, 22, of Sunset, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at Decatur Community Hospital.

Mr Thompson was born March 31, 1978, in Coos Bay, Ore. He was an electrician.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, at Oaklawn Cemetery. Coker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Buddy Edwards, Rocky Edwards, Dallas Edwards, Wesley Edwards, William Buckley and Jeremy Henchman.

Survivors include his adoptive parents, Buddy and Nancy Edwards of Sunset; two brothers, Allen Thompson of Arizona and Joe Thompson of Oregon; and four sisters, Missy Thompson of New Jersey, Amanda Thompson of Lewisville, Rachel Edwards of Arlington and Libby Thompson of Gainesville.

Claudia J. Martin

Mrs. Claudia J. Martin, age 84, of Denton, Texas, passed away July 1, 2000, in Denton. She was born Fe. 7, 1916, to Edgar E. and Ella A. (Adams) Johnston in Wheeler County, Texas. She married Ralph Martin on Dec. 31, 1936, in Mobeetie, Texas. Mrs. Martin was a secretary for McKinney Public Schools. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Denton Chapter 259 Order of Eastern Star, a past member of the Owl Forum Club and a volunteer worker for Denton Regional Medical Center. She was a member of the Highland Baptist Church in Denton.

She is survived by her son, Cecil E. Martin and wife, Glynda of Miami, Texas; daughter-in-law, Sue Martin of Denton, Texas; three grandchildren, Vicki, Stephen, Jay L.; three great-grandchildren, Katherine, Hannah and Perry; nephew, Jim Johnson of Dumas, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Martin; son, Jay Bill Martin; parents; and brother, Jay T. Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at Highland Baptist Church in Denton, Texas with the Rev. Eddie Schafer officiating. Family visitation will follow after the church service. Interment will be held at 3 p.m. at Ridgeview Memorial park, Allen, Texas. Services are under the direction of Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Directors.

Mr. Charlie Cunningham, Mr. Larry Davis, Mr. O. L. McClure, Mr. Steve Martin, Mr. Jay Martin and Mr. Jim Johnson will e serving as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Highland Baptist Church, 600 Thomas Street, Denton, TX 76201.

Raymond Kitchens

Raymond Edward Kitchens, 73, of Denton, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at his residence.

He was born March 11, 1927, in Coleman, to George Washington and Syrina Alvertie (Kinley) Kitchens. He married Rebecca Ann Swoper on Nov. 20, 1980.

Mr. Kitchens was a retired crane operator.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 6, in the chapel of Goen-Hudgens Funeral Home in Denton.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at Goen-Hudgens Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife of Denton; son, Billy Wayne Kitchens of the U.S. Army in England; three daughters, Mary Kitchens of Louisiana, Pam Goodman of Arlington and Brandy Lynn Mathis of Denton; two brothers, Glen Alton Kitchens of Alba and Wayne Kitchens of Abernathy; five sisters, Evelyn Durham of Coleman, Sue Wilkins of San Antonio, Jane Rowan of Abernathy, Barbara Crabb of Eastland, Gwendolyn Bales of Michigan and Sandra Rodgers of Santa Anna; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Bertha Corder

Rhome - Bertha Olivia Corder, 61, of Rhome, died Friday, June 30, in a car accident in Denton County.

She was born Aug. 23, 1938, in Winding Gulf, W.Va. She married John A. Corder on July 3, 1965, in Melissa.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Coker Funeral Home in Decatur is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her husband of Rhome; two daughters, Rebecca Lynn Lamb of Slidell and Christine Mae Corder of Cashion, Okla.; two brothers, Donald Sumner of Jacksonville, Fla., and Phillip Sumner of Pennsylvania; two sisters, Beth Ryder of Pittsvilla, Va., and Viva Izon of N.C.; and five grandchildren.

Rosalind Cottrell

Carrollton - Rosalind Kay Cottrell, 44, of Carrollton, died Monday, July 3, 2000, in Dallas.

She was born November 10, 1955, in Abilene, to Charles E. Jones and Willie Frances Champion. She married Johnie Lee Cottrell.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 7, at Lake Forest Church in Flower Mound. The Rev. Rick Dorman will officiate.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight, Thursday, July 6, at Peoples Funeral Home in Denton.

Survivors include her mother, Willie Frances Smith of Gause; husband of Carrollton; two daughters, Kendra Roddy of Arlington and Jondra D. Cottrell of Carrollton; three stepchildren, Jeffery Cottrell, Sherrye Webb and Everett Cottrell; four brothers, Charles Jones Jr., Byron Jones, Stephen McAdams and Artis McAdams, all of Denton; two sisters, Audrey Jones of Denton and Penny Phillips of The Colony; and six grandchildren.
