Robert Ginn Jr.

E. Robert Ginn Jr., 75, of Denton, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at his residence.

He was born March 20, 1925, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Elda Robert and Mary (Zehner) Ginn Sr.

Mr. Ginn served in the U.S. Navy. He was the circulation manager for the "Youngstown Vindicator." His was a former master of Hillman Lodge of the Masons. After moving to Denton, he volunteered at Denton Community Hospital and was active at the Denton Senior Center.

Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at Saint John's Episcopal Church in Masury, Ohio. The Rev. George L. Wareham will officiate.

Survivors include his two sons, Robert W. Ginn and Eric R. Ginn of Masury, Ohio; three daughters, Mary Helen and Barbara Ginn of Masury, Ohio, and Norma Mrofchak of Austintown, Ohio; sister, Barbara Ginn of Niles, Ohio; and special friend, Dr. Eva Cadwallader of Denton.

Goen-Hudgens Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.

Jo Dennis

Gainesville - Jo Dennis, 70, of Gainesville, formerly of Lewisville, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at her residence.

She was born Jan. 4, 1930, in Mallard, to Homer and Maude Peterson Parr. She married Jack Dennis on Nov. 29, 1946, in Gainesville.

Mrs. Dennis worked as a copy inspector for Taylor Publishing Company.

She was a member of Shiloh Church in Flower Mound.

Survivors include her husband of Gainesville; three daughters, Jacqulyn Denise Works of Gainesville, Teresa Janiece Gray of Pilot Point, and Jody Patrice Thomas of Lewisville; one brother, Billy Parr of Gainesville; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, at Shiloh Church in Flower Mound. The Rev. Herb Ebsen will officiate. Interment will follow in Dye Mound Cemetery in Montague County.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, Aug. 2, at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home in Lewisville.

J.W. Vaughn

Lake Dallas - J.W. Vaughn, 79, of Lake Dallas, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at Careage Place in Pilot Point.

He was born Nov. 20, 1922, in Buff, Okla., to John and Ora (Braisher) Vaughn. He married Pauline (Poly) Blake in Lake Dallas on Dec. 7, 1979. She died May 20, 1989.

Mr. Vaughn served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the Lake Dallas Volunteer Fire Department and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, in the chapel of Goen-Hudgens Funeral Home in Denton. The Rev. John Rasberry will officiate. Burial will be in Swisher Cemetery in Lake Dallas.

Survivors include his son, John Wayne Vaughn of Flower Mound; sister, Lavina Osborn of Denton; and two grandchildren. His sister, Eva Carson, is deceased.

Juanita Green

Ponca City, Okla. - Juanita Coatney Green, 84, of Ponca City, Okla., died Friday, July 28, 2000, at her residence.

She was born Dec. 9, 1915, in Coffeyville, Kan., to Homer and Eva (Smith) Roberts. She married Dale Coatney in 1936, in Coffeyville. She moved to Ponca City in 1938. Mr. Coatney died in December 1969. She married William Green on Dec. 30, 1976, in Ponca City. He died Oct. 13, 1998.

Mrs. Green retired in 1972 from a 30-year career in retail sales at J.C. Penney.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Ponca City, and was a member of the Miriam Sunday School Class.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Ponca City, 1904 N. Union, Suite 103, Ponca City, Okla. 74601.

Survivors include one son, David L. Coatney of Denton; four sisters, Cecelia Easky of Ponca City, Okla., Dorothy Harvey of Coffeyville, Kan., Wilma Strong of Nevada, Mo., and Rita Williams of Odessa; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Maggie Teague

Paducah - Maggie Teague, 81, of Paducah, formerly of Denton, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, in Paducah.

She was born May 30, 1919, in Montague, to Mack Kirk and Estaley (Jackson) Kirk. She married Meradith Lee Teague on May 20, 1946, in Olney. He died Sept. 28, 1992.

Mrs. Teague was the owner and operator of Teague's Garage. She also worked there as a machinist. She moved to Paducah from Denton in 1993.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, in the chapel of Schmitz-Floyd-Andersen Funeral Home. Burial will be in Chinn Chapel Cemetery in Lewisville.

Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. tonight, Thursday, Aug. 3, at the funeral home.

Survivors include five sisters, Minnie Bailey of Paducah, Edith Burton of Electra, Nettie Carr of Mounds, Okla., Juanita Ford of Rosston and Annie Garrett of Paducah. Two brothers, J.C. Kirk and David Kirk, are deceased.

UNT music professor and opera singer dies

Edward Baird, professor of voice at the University of North Texas College of Music, died Wednesday at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas.

Dr. Baird, 67, joined the voice faculty of UNT in 1962.

He sang in 43 Fort Worth Opera productions and as a soloist with the Dallas Symphony seven times. He performed with such high-profile artists as Placido Domingo and Beverly Sills. He had more than 60 opera roles to his credit and had appeared with more than a dozen opera companies as well as performing as a soloist with major orchestras.

In addition to opera, Dr. Baird performed in American musicals. He was named best supporting actor for his role as Jud Fry in "Oklahoma!" in 1971 at Fort Worth's Casa Manana Summer Musicals.

In recent years, he performed several of his favorite operetta roles in productions with the Dallas-based Texas Gilbert and Sullivan Company.

Dr. Baird was past president of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. He was appointed in May 1984 to serve as the college's director of graduate studies. During his tenure, the college implemented a new artist certificate program and restructured its doctor of musical arts degree.

He received the President's Council University Service award for contributions to the graduate program in 1990 and was named "Top Prof" at UNT in 1993. He was elected president of the NATS Foundation in 1998.

A native of Missouri, Dr. Baird graduated from the University of Missouri at Kansas City with bachelor's and master's degrees in music. He received an alumni achievement award from the university in 1987-88.

Dr. Baird received his doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1962. He was the institution's first vocalist to receive its new doctor of musical arts degree.

A scholarship was established in Dr. Baird's name in 1999. Memorials may be made to that fund at the UNT College of Music, Attention Cindy Andrew, P.O. Box 311367, Denton, Texas 76203, or by calling (940) 369-7771.

Services for Dr. Baird are pending.

Stella Copestick

Decatur - Stella Juanita Bryant Copestick, 56, of Decatur, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth.

She was born Sept. 6, 1943, in Stigler, Okla. She married Robert Copestick.

Mrs. Copestick was a house cleaner.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at Oaklawn Cemetery in Decatur. Louis Horton will officiate.

Survivors include her husband of Decatur; two sons, Dakota Perkins of Stigler, Okla., and Sidney Bryant of Decatur; four daughters, Polly Monhuam of Keota, Okla., and Lou Snider, Vicki Torres and Tina Beasley, all of Decatur; brother, Sonny Hale of Keota, Okla.; three sisters, Ruby McGuire of Fort Smith, Ark., and Anita McGuire and Sylvia Ford, both of Decatur; and 34 grandchildren.

Martha Ellis

Martha Lou Ellis, 58, of Denton, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at Vintage Health Care Center in Denton.

She was born July 25, 1942, in Mineral Wells, to James Leslie and Lillie Bellie (Hamm) Turpin.

She was a homemaker.

Ms. Ellis was a member of the Church of Christ.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, in Woodlawn Cemetery in Mineral Wells. Cleburne Martin will officiate.

Goen-Hudgens Funeral Home in Denton is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her three sons, James Wayne Pitts of Fort Stockton, Earl Jay Ellis of Waco and Marco Ellis of Temple; daughter, Kassandra Ellis of Temple; and brother, John Turpin of Justin.

Oscar Weaver

Lewisville - Oscar L. Weaver, 73, of Lewisville, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 16, 1926, in Telephone, to James and Mabel Hurd Weaver. He married Nell Conway on Oct. 16, 1948, in Dallas. She died in 1984.

Mr. Weaver served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked as an administrative clerk for Bell Helicopter for 30 years.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #88 in Lake Dallas.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Friday, Aug. 4, at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home in Lewisville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 8900 John W. Carpenter Freeway, Dallas, TX 75247, or the National Kidney Foundation of Texas, 13500 Midway Rd., Suite 101, Dallas, TX 75244.

Survivors include his longtime companion, Nez Cast of Lewisville; three sons, Glenn Weaver of Southlake, Joe Weaver of Fort Worth and Dennis Weaver of Garland; daughter, Vickie Norton of Carrollton; two brothers, James Weaver of California and Mickey Weaver of Bonham; sister, Florene Hatley of Duncanville; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Ida Hays

Ida A. Hays, 83, of Denton, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, in Denton.

She was born July 18, 1917, in Knippa. She married Charles E. Hays Jr. on Dec. 23, 1939. He died Feb. 10, 1984. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

Services will be held at 12 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South in San Antonio. Interment will follow in Mission Burial Park South. Mission Park South Funeral Home of San Antonio is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary F. Stockard of Sanger; two sons, Charles F. Hays III of Plano and James R. Hays of Humble; sister, Frieda Yarbro of Uvalde; and four grandchildren. Two sons, John A. Hays and Kenneth P. Hays, a brother, Volney Umlang, and a sister, Edna Padgett, are deceased.

Joseph Walker

Joseph N. Walker, 84, of Denton, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at Lake Forest Good Samaritan Village.

He was born Jan. 3, 1916, in Paola, Kan., to Joseph and Lucy (Brumley) Walker. He married Regina Queen in Dallas in 1970.

Mr. Walker was a retired insurance salesman and a member of Elks Club for 17 years. He was a 25-year member of Masonic Lodge Shrine and past Worthy Patron of Highland Park Eastern Star in Dallas.

Memorial services were held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, in Meade Chapel of Lake Forest Good Samaritan Village. The

Rev. John Bruce officiated. Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, Denton Unit, 3301 W. Freeway, Fort Worth, Texas 76107-5709, or the Leukemia Society of North Central Texas, 6060 N. central Expressway, Dallas, Texas 75206.

Survivors include his wife of Denton; daughter, Cherie Gamboa of Coppell; brother, James Walker of Corpus Christi; and one grandchild.

Lorene Jones

Sanger -- Lorene Jones, 91, of Sanger, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at Care Inn of Sanger.

She was born June 26, 1909, in Gribble Springs.

Mrs. Jones was a homemaker.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, at Sanger Cemetery. The Rev. Dickie Amyx will officiate. Burial will be in Bolivar Cemetery.

The family will be at Coker Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight, Saturday, Aug. 5, for visitation.

Survivors include one daughter, Bettye Jones of Dallas; two sons, J.D. Jones and Bobby D. Jones, both of Sanger; one brother, C.J. Blackburn of Sanger; one sister, Alice Rowe of Denton; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
