She was a graduate of Ada (Okla.) High School and attended East Central College from 1933 to 1935. While working at a civil service job, she met Jake Craven. They married in El Reno, Okla., in 1939, after a short courtship. Soon she and Jake moved to Big Spring where a decision was made to return to Denton.
In March of 1940, a small space just off the square on East Oak Street was rented and with a small stock of Dickies work clothes and a lettering machine, Denton Uniform Shop was off and running. With the beginning of World War II, Jake was drafted and Mabel ran the business. After the war, Jake returned home and immediately started adding more stock to the store. Soon they had outgrown the 20X40 foot space and moved to a larger location. Fifteen years later, the name was changed to Craven's Dry Goods and the business moved to a 50-foot wide building on West Hickory. The store continued to grow and in 1974 the First State Bank purchased the building and Craven's moved to 101 West Hickory.
The store closed in 1990, 50 years after its beginning. Mabel and Jake had 62 years of working together, building a business, rearing a family and contributing to the community of Denton. One of the greatest honors ever received by Mabel and Jake was the Otis Fowler Award in 1985. This is the highest award given to a member of the Denton community for their service to the city.
Mabel would want to be remembered for her devotion to Christ and love of people. She was a member of Bible Study Fellowship for 15 years and an active member of the Denton Tennis Association. She played tennis five to six times a week until her recent illness. She was also an active member of the TWU Wellness Center, First United Methodist Church, the Bungalow Class, 50-year member of the Ariel Club, and a charter member of the Denton Woman's Club and the Denton Benefit League.
