Mary Jane Lane

Mary Jane Lane went to be with her Lord Jesus Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at Denton Regional Medical Center, after an extended illness.

She was born Jan. 26, 1927, in Fort Worth, Texas, and adopted as an infant by Rodney and Hattie Nichols. She was raised on the north side of Fort Worth, and was led to Christ as a child, growing up in her faith while attending Broadway Baptist Church. After graduating from Fort Worth Arlington Heights High School in 1943, she came to Denton to attend what was then North Texas State College, and in 1946, met Ed Lane. They were married Nov. 26, 1949, beginning a life partnership that would span almost 52 years and produce four children, 12 grandchildren, countless friends, a legendary Denton business, and a legacy of love and laughter that will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Mary Jane and Ed were the proprietors of "Lane's Ice Cream" on Congress Street from 1948 till 1973, and during that span helped raise several generations of Denton High School students. Lane's was the kind of friendly place where all the kids went to hang out after school and even held pep rallies there, where Mary Jane would start fixing your usual order from memory as soon as you walked in, and where nobody ever went hungry, even if they were a little short on cash. Mary Jane and Ed are fondly remembered by many DHS alumni and are often invited to Denton High reunions, even hosting events for several reunions at their farm in Sanger.

After Lane's closed, Mary Jane went to work for the Denton Independent School District, first serving as athletic department secretary, and later as counselor secretary at what is now Ryan High before she retired. She inherited a love of sports from her father, and loved to watch games of any kind, particularly when Denton players were involved, and most especially when her children or grandchildren were participating! One of her greatest joys was her family, whom she loved beyond measure. She was "Meme" to her grandkids - her proudest title, and the name by which everyone knew her best. Meme, we love you and we look forward to seeing you in heaven!

Mrs. Lane, a member of First Baptist Church, is survived by her husband, Edward Lane; four children, Eddie Lane, Rodney Lane, Dwane Lane, and Jane Naugher; 12 grandchildren, Maegan and Perry Lane; Matthew, Jordan and Collin Morris; Susannah, Charlotte, Marinda and Abram Lane; J.J., Lane, and Julie Naugher; and numerous relatives and friends.
