Eula Bass

Eula Ramsey Bass, who lived in three centuries, passed away at her home on June 27, 2001, after a short illness. She was blessed with exceptional health throughout her life and remained alert and active until shortly before her death. The was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was active in her earlier years.

Funeral services were held in Fordyce, Ark., on June 30, 2001, under the direction of Benton Funeral Home.

She would have been 106 years old on Nov. 16, and at her annual family birthday parties she loved to tell of the many societal changes she witnessed in her life, including the invention of the airplane, automobile, radio and television. She recalled major historical events such as the sinking of the Titanic, two sightings of Haley's Comet, the Spanish-American War and two world wars. She participated in the first election after women obtained the right to vote and she continued to vote, even in the year 2000. On her 100th birthday her family recorded her extensive recollections and she added to that on each following birthday. Although she witnessed many historical events, she was not mired in the past but remained young at heart.

She was featured in a Houston-Chronicle article published on Jan. 1, 2000, about centenarians.

Mrs. Bass was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She married Egbert Garland Bass in 1916 after a courtship by horse and buggy. She accompanied her husband from Arkansas to various communities in Louisiana and Texas where Mr. Bass owned and operated lumber companies.

After raising four children, at age 57, she gladly accepted the primary responsibility for raising her two and a half year old grandson until he left for college. She has been and will continue to be a profound influence on her friends and family. She was a very joyous and happy person who was unconcerned about herself but was always interested and involved with her family and friends.

She is survived by four children, Regenta Bass Jenkins, 83, and Egbert Harold Bass, 80, of Beaumont, Hubert Allison Bass, 71, and wife, Ann, of Huntsville and Eula Mae Lyle, 69, and husband, Dr. Bert Lyle, of Denton; six grandchildren, James O. Jenkins Jr. and wife, Gail, of Beaumont, Bert Lyle III and wife, Susie, Kathy Bass Miller and husband, Larry, Keith Bass and wife, Grace, all of Huntsville, Kyle Ray Bass of New Braunfels, Frank Lyle and wife, Julie, of Denton; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In 1995 the family hosted a 100th birthday party for her at the Tower Club that every descendant and friends and family from several states attended. Mrs. Bass often recalled that party as one of the highlights of her life and she spent many hours looking at the photographs and memorabilia from the event.

Funeral services were conducted by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all residents of Huntsville. Bert Lyle III, Baptist Lay Minister, conducted the service; Keith Bass read the eulogy; Allison Bass sang "His Eye is on the Sparrow;" Brent Bass, nine year old son of Keith and Grace Bass spoke; James Jenkins Jr. of Beaumont and Frank Lyle and Dr. Bert Lyle Jr. (son-in-law) from Denton spoke.
