Larry Spillman

Larry L. Spillman, 60, of Kansas City, Mo., died Sunday, July 29, 2001 at North Kansas City Hospital of a stroke.

He was born Dec. 26, 1940, in Kansas City, Kan. and attended Windotte High School in Kansas City, Kan. He was employed by TWA (Kansas City) for 42 years, from Aug. 3, 1959 until the present.

A memorial service will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at Mt. Moriah Terrace Park Funeral Home, 801 NW 108th Street, Kansas City, Mo.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that contributions be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association or the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Troy Lee and Paige Spillman; grandchildren, Blake and Brooke Spillman; dear friend and companion Leona Simmonsof Denton; many friends and TWA co-workers in the Kansas City Metroplex; and several relatives in the Lawrence/Topeka Area. Mr. Spillman was preceded in death by his father, Carl Spillman, mother, Inez DoddSpillman, and one brother, Gary Lee Spillman.

Joe E. Martin

Joe E. Martin, 75, of Little Elm was born on Nov. 7, 1925, and passed away on Monday, July 30, 2001.

He served his country with honor in the U.S. Navy and served his family with leadership and laughter. His presence will be missed by all of his family and his memory will always live on in our hearts.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ida Pearl Martin and his son, Donald Eugene Smith.

He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Melba Jean Martin; sons, Ronald E. Smith, Robert E. Smith; son and daugher-in-law, Richard E. and Theresa Smith; daugher and son-in-law, Sherry Jean and Ty Plischke; 11 grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; and longtime friend and brother Bud Martin of Bonham as well as a host of other Brothers and Sisters, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at Family Funeral Care in Mesquite on Wednesday, Aug. 1. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, with a committal service to follow at 1 p.m. at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Ray Sadler Jr.

Ray Sadler Jr., 80, of Denton died Monday, July 30, 2001, in Cleburne.

He was born Oct. 12, 1920, in Denton to Ray C. Sadler Sr. and Josie Adcock Sadler.

He married Billie Francis Montgomery in Marietta, Okla.; she preceded him in death on Dec. 10, 1995. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Denton. He was a rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service before he retired.

The family will be at DeBerry Funeral Directors Wednesday, August 1, from 7 to 8 p.m. for visitation. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, August 2, in the chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors with Gary Mueller officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park in Denton.

Pallbearers will be Danny Bays Jr., Roderick Sadler, Charles Day, Paul Evans, Roy Christian and Bob Storrie.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ray C. and Sandy Sadler III of San Antonio; daughters, Jane and Roy Christian of Cleburne, Nancy Evans of Pilot Point. Emily and Charlie Day of Denton; brother and sister-in-law, Clifton and Jayne Sadler of California; grandchildren, Paul, Melissa and Christi Evans of Pilot Point, Danny Bays Jr. of Kansas City, Kan., and Roderick Sadler of San Antonio. A sister, Geneva Bander preceded him in death.

Olin Burchett

Olin Lester Burchett, 89, of Denton died Monday, July 30, 2001, at his home.

He was born Aug. 28, 1911, in Blue Ridge to Alvin Floyd and Melvin Elizabeth (Walters) Burchett.

Mr. Burchett was a retired farmer.

He attended the Assembly of God.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, with a service following at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Goen-Hudgens Funeral Home in Denton. The Rev. Welden Burchett will officiate. Interment will follow in Zion Cemetery in Denton County.

Survivors include one brother, Vaudrey D. Burchett of Fort Worth; and two sisters, Cleo Newland of Denton and Fay MacDaniels of Fort Worth.

Mildred Houghton

Sanger - Mildred Lucille Houghton, 88, of Sanger died Tuesday, July 31, at Pilot Point Care Center.

She was born Oct. 12, 1912, in Snyder.

Mrs. Houghton was a homemaker.

No services are planned at this time. Burial will be in Lubbock Memorial Cemetery, Lubbock.

Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Hilliard of Sanger; two sons, Dan Houghton of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and Ted Houghton of Lima, Ohio; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Robert Ross

Justin - Robert "Robbie" Crag Ross, 42, of Justin died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at his home.

He was born May 28, 1959, in Covington, Ky., to William and Marlene (Dean) Ross.

Mr. Ross was an auto mechanic.

A graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, in Bronson Cemetery in Bronson.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, Thursday, Aug. 2, at Goen-Hudgens Funeral Home Chapel of Justin.

Survivors include his wife, Janice M. Ross of Justin; one son, Robert Corey Ross of Bronson; one stepson, Justin Chandler of Justin; one daughter, Lindsay Down Ross of Bronson; one stepdaughter, Breanne LaShay Jacks of Justin; one sister, Julie Ross of Fort Worth; and his parents, Jim and Marlene Ford of Fort Worth.

Lewis Speer

Lewis Garvin Speer, 93, of Denton died Monday, July 30, 2001.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Beaumont. Kelly-Watkins Funeral Home in Beaumont is in charge of the arrangements. DeBerry Funeral Directors is in charge of local arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Denton Christian Preschool, 1114 W. University Drive, Denton 76201.

Ima Jean Phillips

Funeral services will be held for Ima Jean Phillips, 80, of Jacksboro, at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at First United Methodist Church in Jacksboro, under the direction of Coker Funeral Home. Reverend Eric Rothe will officiate with burial following at Oakwood Cemetery. She passed away Monday, July 30, 2001.

Mrs. Phillips was born March 6, 1921 in Denton, to Jennie Oberia (Robertson) and Wayne Homer Edwards. She was raised in Denton where she graduated from high school, then attended Texas State College for Women.

Mrs. Phillips married Horace R. Gowan Sept. 21, 1946, at the Little Chapel in the Woods in Denton. She and Horace continued his family's cattle business, near Barton Chapel, until his death July 4, 1968, at which time she continued the business until 1999. Mrs. Phillips worked as secretary to the secretary of defense in Washington D.C. during World War II, while Mr. Gowan served as a colonel in the U.S. Army.

She also worked for Jacksboro National Bank, then retired as secretary of the Texas Highway Department, Jacksboro, after 10 years of service.

According to her family she was loved by all who knew her and brought love, laughter and friendship to everyone around her. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, serving as Sunday school teacher when her children were young. Mrs. Phillips also served as vice president in 1992-93 for the Oakwood Cemetery Association and grounds secretary from 1993-94. She was an avid bridge player and was active in her club for many years.

She married Lester E. Phillips in January 1972. He passed away March 30, 1983.

Survivors include son Jimmy Gowan and wife Janey of Jacksboro; daughter Mary Turnipseed and husband David of Whitehouse; two brothers, Bob Edwards of Arlington and Fred Edwards of Dallas; grandchildren, Keely Turnipseed Aust and husband Matt of Denton, Erin Turnipseed of Whitehouse, and Neely and Whitney Gowan of Lufkin; two step-grandchildren, Kelly Evans of Jacksboro and Michelle O'Brien and husband Hugh of Blanchard , Okla.; three great-grandchildren, Ashley O'Brien, Natalie Rogers and Arielle Evans; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by husband Horace Gowan and husband Lester Phillips, three sisters, Joan Schmitz, Mattie Beth Smart, and Evelyn Bilheimer; and three brothers, Leoland Edwards, Homer Edwards and W.H. Edwards.

Pallbearers are Mike Maxwell, Kurt Schmitz, Eric Schmitz, Mark Sanderfer, Barry Brown and Buck Brown.

Honorary pallbearers are B.J. Logan, Sherwyn Leach, Robert Lee Martin, and Pack Gwaltney.

Alfred Butler Jr.

Lake Dallas - Alfred W. Butler Jr., 70, of Lake Dallas died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Denton Community Hospital.

He was born June 1, 1931, in El Paso, to Alfred W. and Elizabeth Westbrook Butler, and graduated from high school in Portland, Ore. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Butler was employed by Ford Motor Company.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas.

The family will be at DeBerry Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight, Friday, Aug. 3, for visitation.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include an uncle, Tom Westbrook of Katy; and three cousins, Shirley Ann Peters of Lake Dallas, Carl Westbrook of San Antonio, and Janice Walter of St. Louis, Mo.

Jim Cooke

Jim Cooke, 47, of Denton died today, Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Harris Hospital in Fort Worth.

Schmitz-Floyd-Andersen Funeral Home.

William McIntyre Jr.

Eliasville - Col. William Joseph McIntyre Jr., 86, of Eliasville, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at Denton Regional Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 27, 1914, in Philadelphia, Pa., to William J. and Rose Teresa Sommers McIntyre. He attended the University of Maryland and Command & General Staff College. On July 7, 1950, he married Phyllis P. Wright in Everett, N.J.

Col. McIntyre retired from the U.S. Army Signal Corp on Sept. 1, 1968, after serving during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietname War. After his retirement he became a self-employed rancher. He was active in the National Rifle Association and was a Republican fundraiser.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, at the Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery.

The family will be at DeBerry Funeral Directors in Denton from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, for visitation.

Survivors include his wife of Garland; one daughter, Kathleen Kammer of Denton; four sons, William McIntyre III of Friendswood, Kevin McIntyre of Kaufman, Tim McIntyre of Decatur and Brian McIntyre of Fort Worth; and five grandchildren.

Jim Cooke

Jim Cooke, 47, of Denton died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth.

He was born Oct. 29, 1953, in Spearman to Donald Richard and Vida Cooke.

Mr. Cooke was a hairdresser in Denton for 27 years and was the owner and operator of Side Street Hair Salon for 15 years.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, at Saint David's Episcopal Church. Father Roy Baines will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.

The family will be at Schmitz-Floyd-Andersen Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, for visitation.

Survivors include his wife, Jacqui Cooke of Denton; his mother, Vida Cooke of Wichita Falls; one son, James David Floyd of Denton; one stepson, James David Rasco of Denton; and one brother, Jon Cooke of Wichita Falls.

Virginia Sparks

Pilot Point - Virginia Ann Sparks, 36, of Pilot Point died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at her home.

She was born Feb. 17, 1965, in Denton to David and Geraldine (Harwell) Dunn. On April 19, 1985, she married Sam Sparks in Aubrey.

Mrs. Sparks was a homemaker.

The service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, in the chapel of Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home. The Rev. George Witter will officiate. Burial will follow in the New Hope Cemetery in Burns City.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Colwick, Anthony Colwick, Rickey Long, Danny Davis, Michael Hanks, Timothy Witter, Daniel Witter, and J.P. Whisnant.

The family will be at the funeral home from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, for visitation.

Survivors include her husband, Sam Sparks; one daughter, Deborah Ann Sparks; one son, Samuel David Sparks; her parents, David and Geraldine Dunn; and two brothers, Gary Dunn and Danny Ray Dunn, all of Pilot Point.
