Russell Bland

Russell Bland of Aubrey went home to be with his Lord on Friday, Aug. 10, 2001. He was born April 18, 1939, in Belton.

He was a carpenter and member of Antioch Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, at Slay Memorial Funeral Center in Aubrey. Jimmy Dane and the Rev. Bob Joyce will officiate.

Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity.

Survivors include his wife, Rebecca; 3 sons, Rusty and daughter-in-law Vickie, Randy and daughter-in-law Renee, and Rick and daughter-in-law Beth, all of Aubrey; daughter Renee Carlyle and son-in-law Jerry of Denton; mother, Lou Ellen Bland of Pilot Point; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, Sammy Bland of Forney and Earl Bland of Mineral Wells; two sisters, Nona Sluder of Gainesville and June Irwin of Mineral wells. He was preceded in death by his father, Charlie Bland and a grandson, Travis Looper.

Pallbearers will be Stanley Bland, Mark Bland, Bubba Bland, Benton Bland, Colt Looper and Mike Shook. Honorary pallbearers will be Jessie and Garrett Bland.

Friends may visit the funeral home from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, and 8 a.m. to service time Sunday.

James Kearns

James H. Kearns, 60, of Lincolnshire, Ill., died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, following a heart attack. He attended Denton public schools, graduating in 1959. He was born Jan. 11, 1941, in Auburn, N.Y., and is survived by his wife of 37 years, the former Ginger Pearce, also from Denton. He is also survived by his mother, Lula Kearns, sister, Karen Harper and her husband, Ron Harper, all of Flower Mound.

Jim graduated from Texas A & M University, class of 1963, with a degree in architecture. He retired after 30 years of service with Houston Industries (now Reliant Energy).

Visitation will be held Sunday, Aug. 12, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home in Denton, with a memorial service to be conducted Monday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church. A private interment at Roselawn Cemetery will precede the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the James H. Kearns Academic Scholarship Fund (Texas A & M University Foundation, 401 George Bush Drive, College Station, TX 77840).

Jimmy Allen

Pilot Point - Jimmy Lee Allen, 62, of Pilot Point died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at Denton Community Hospital.

He was born March 29, 1939, in Wade, Okla., to Farris and Irene Tickner Allen. He married Linda Pedigo in Dallas.

Mr. Allen was the owner of Jim Allen's Body Shop in Lewisville and a member of the National Rifle Association.

He attended Calvary Baptist Church in Pilot Point.

The service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 13, in the chapel of Huff/Slay Funeral Home. Dr. Roger Marsh will officiate. Burial will in Pilot Point Community Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Steve Redmon, Jake Pedigo, Don Enox, Dave Glenenger, Larry Pockrus and Clyde Bowery.

Survivors include his wife of Pilot Point; one son, Chance Allen of Ponder; one daughter, Kim Garite of Arlington; one sister, Freda Sue Taylor of Arlington; and two granddaughters.

Mary Louise Baker

Kingsland - Mary Louise Baker, 82, of Kingswood died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001 in Belton.

She was born Feb. 16, 1919, in Lincoln, Neb., to Lewis and Anita Grimm Baker.

While still in high school she played cello with the Lincoln Symphony. She graduated with a master's degree and the Performer's Certificate from Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., followed by a year of traveling as a cellist with the North Carolina Symphony. She taught at TCU and was first chair cellist with the Fort Worth Symphony under Ezra Rochlin. She completed her teaching career in the Fort Worth School District.

The service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 13, in Greenwood Garden Chapel. Entombment will be in Greenwood Mausoleum.

She is survived by two sisters, Margaret Eberly of Denton and Hope Bauch of Freemont, Calif

T.J. Jones

Krum - T.J. Jones, 54 of Krum died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at the Medical Center of Lewisville.

George Floyd

George Floyd, 80, of Denton died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, in Denton.

He was born Nov. 1, 1920, in Cotton Plant, Ark., to Johnny Floyd and Lillie Floyd.

He was a member of St. Andrew Church of God in Christ.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at St. Andrew Church of God in Christ. Elder Kenneth D. Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

The family will be at Peoples Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, for visitation.

Survivors include three daughters, Shandra Floyd of Denton, Mirtha Mae Williams of Chicago, Ill., and Linda Holloway of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two brothers, John Floyd of Little Rock, Ark., and Arthur Floyd of Cotton PLant, Ark.; two sisters, Amy McFadden of Cotton Plant, Ark., and Lorraine Floyd of Brinkley, Ark.; 17 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

George Hillman Sr.

Plano - George Milton Hillman Sr., 75, of Plano, formerly a resident of Denton, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2001, at the Medical Center of Lewisville.

He was born April 4, 1926, in Philadelphia, Miss., to Wanzie and Lucille (Huffman) Hillman. He was a graduate of North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas). He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was married to Hildagard Louise Standefer on June 15, 1946, in Denton. She preceded him in death Feb. 29, 2000.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Mr. Hillman was an accountant for Commercial Metals and for Wilburn & Assoc.

Private memorial services will be at a later date. Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Frith of Carrollton and Debra Dukatt of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one son, George Hillman Jr. of Frisco; one sister, Nancy Boyd of Meridan, Miss.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Robert Townsend

Robert W. Townsend, 69, of Denton died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at Denton Community Hospital.

Lillian B. Wainwright, 75, of Denton died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at Denton Regional Medical Center.

Deanna Watson

Deanna Watson, age 36, passed away Friday, Aug. 10, 2001 after courageously battling cancer. She lovingly leaves behind two daughters, Brittany, 11, and Lindsey, 8. Deanna attended Churchill High School in San Antonio, graduating Cum Laude in 1984. She was involved with the dance team throughout high school, and as a senior she became captain.

After high school, Deanna enjoyed careers as a homemaker and aerobic instructor. During the past few years she developed a career in real estate with Irwin Realty in Denton, Texas.

Surviving Deanna are her parents, Gary and Sandy Brieden; sister, Deborah Prevost; brother, Scott Brieden, grandmother, Clara Brieden, and grandfather, Jim Sharp.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church of San Antonio. Hugh Majors will officiate.

Annie Blanton

Annie Mae Blanton passed away Friday, August 10, 2001. She was born Feb. 21, 1914, to R.E. and Frances Kizer at Red Banks, Miss. She married Marvin Blanton on Sept. 2, 1931, in Dallas, Texas. She was a member of the Kickapoo Garden Club, the Mae Blanton Branch of the American Begonia Society and was a two-time award winner in the American Begonia Society.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Lake Dallas, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Margrette Oliver. She is survived by a daughter, Mildred Hopkins and husband Donald of State College, Pa.; three sons, Marvin Jr. and wife Carolyn of Hickory Creek; Marion of Slidell and Michial and wife Dolores of Balch Springs; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at Restland Wildwood Chapel with brother Daniel Patrick officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001 at Restland Funeral Home.

LaVerne Ekstrom

Lewisville - LaVerne K. Ekstrom, age 70, of Lewisville, Texas, passed away Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, in Lewisville.

Mr. Ekstrom was born Jan. 19, 1931, in Wayne, Kan., to Melvin Leonard and Elizabeth Havel Ekstrom. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Arlena May Thompson on Nov. 6, 1982, in Dallas. He was a member of the Mayflower Congregational Church in Flower Mound.

LaVerne worked for Huffines Chevrolet and was later to transfer to Huffines Dodge in Lewisville. Mr. Ekstrom was very active in the Boy Scouts, serving as scout master for Troop #238 in Adrian, Mo., and was certified as an instructor for Scout Masters and Leadership in the Heart of America Council of the Boy Scouts of America. LaVerne coached girls softball teams for several successful seasons. He was a past officer of Elks Lodge #564 in Navada, Mo., and was an honorary warrior of the MiC-O-Say tribe of Ocioal, Mo.

He is survived by his wife, Arlena of Lewisville; daughters, Lorena Ekstrom and her companion, Terri Stevenson of Lewisville, and Catherine Brown and her husband Troy of Lewisville; son, Larry Ekstrom and his wife Dana of Garland; brother, Melvin Leonard Ekstrom Jr. of Joplin, Mo.; six grandsons, Dale, Keith, Justin, Ryan and Colton Ekstrom, Tristen Brown and Travis Sears; and two granddaughters, Mollia Brown and Nicole Vannucci. One son, Dennis Wayne Ekstrom, preceded him in death on Nov. 6, 2000.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at Mayflower Congregational Church in Flower Mound. Interment will follow in McCurley Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, Monday, at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts of America.

"T.J." Jones

Krum - Tommy J. "T.J." Jones, 54, of Krum, and a former resident of Anson, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at the Medical Center of Lewisville.

He was born July 19, 1947, in Anson, Texas, to Paul and Margaret (Fikes) Jones. He attended Anson public schools and was a graduate of Tarlton State University. He was married to Sondra Cooley, in Abilene, Texas, on June 15, 1991.

T.J. was a vocational agriculture teacher for the Denton Independent School District, teaching at both Denton High School for 20 years and Ryan High School for 10 years. He has devoted 30 years to teaching agriculture science in Denton, and one year at Garden City, Kansas. T.J. was a member of many organizations of which he has dedicated his time and love for helping young people learn and enjoy agriculture. His involvements and dedicated work reflected his love for our youth, and our community. He was a member of Denton County Livestock Association, Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association, Blue Ribbon Club, Denton FFA Alumni, North Texas State Fair Association and the National Rifle Association.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at the First Baptist Church, Denton, with the Rev. Cliff Feeler and the Rev. Brad Cockrell officiating. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday and burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Anson, Texas.

The family will be at Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home of Denton for visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, Monday, Aug. 13, 2001.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Jones, Ricky Schertz, John Noles, Jerry Kirby, Fred Brigman and Robert Row.

Honorary pallbearers will be Cecil Denison, Kris Schertz, Tommy Blessing, Jim Massey, Tommy Shackleford, Mac Dyer and Jason Hardin.

He is survived by his wife, Sondra Cooley Jones of Krum, Texas; one aunt, Nell Scarbrough of Abilene, Texas; father and mother-in-law, Hollis and Ava Cooley of Muenster, Texas; brother and sister-in-law, James and Peachie Cooley of Irving, Texas; sister and brother-in-law, Barry and Cynthia Baker of Deer Park, Texas; sister and brother-in-law, Jennie and Richard Gore of Georgetown, Texas; several nieces and nephews; and a very large extended family of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, send memorials in the name of T.J. Jones, to NorthStar Bank of Denton.

Arrangements are under the direction of Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home of Denton.
