Jimmy Lee Allen

Pilot Point - Jimmy Lee Allen, 62, of Pilot Point, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at Denton Community Hospital.

He was born March 29, 1939, in Wade, Okla., to Farris and Irene Tickner Allen. He married Linda Pedigo in Dallas.

Mr. Allen was the owner of Jim Allen's Body Shop in Lewisville. He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Pilot Point.

A service was held at 10 a.m. today, Monday, Aug. 13, in the chapel of Huff-Slay Funeral Home of Pilot Point. Dr. Roger Marsh officiated with the eulogy given by Sonny Gibbs. Burial was in Pilot Point Community Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Steve Redmon, Jake Pedigo, Don Enox, Dave Glenenger, Larry Pockrus and Clyde Bowery.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Allen of Pilot Point, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Chance and Sherry Allen of Ponder, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and John Garite of Arlington, Texas; two granddaughters, Lindsey Allen and Kaylie Allen, both of Ponder, Texas; one sister, Freda Sue Taylor of Arlington, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Joseph Harpold Sr.

Sadler - Joseph Irwin Harpold Sr., 56, of Sadler, formerly of Little Elm, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 17, 1944, in Oak Cliff to Ed and Marcia Miller Harpold. On Oct. 3, 1998, he married Sherri Lee Lasiter in Sadler.

Mr. Harpold was a paint contractor. He was a member of Lebanon Masonic Lodge #837, AF & AM.

He was Methodist.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at Button Memorial Methodist Church. The Rev. John Gowling will officiate. Masonic graveside services will follow at Little Elm Cemetery.

The family will be at the Cantrell Funeral Home of Frisco from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, Aug. 14, for visitation.

Survivors include his wife of Sadler; his mother of Little Elm; one son, Joseph I. Harpold Jr. of Marshall; five daughters, Lisa Murray, Yvonne Simmons and Melinda Nemeth, all of Little Elm, Stacy Harpold of San Antonio, and Shawndra Guerieri of Sadler; two brothers, Arthur Harpold of Hooks and Douglas Harpold of Sadler; and one sister, Debbie Chesim of Sadler.

Lillian Wainwright

Lillian B. Wainwright, 75, of Denton, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at Denton Regional Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 6, 1925, in Ozark. Alab., to Cullie Beasley and Vinnie Marshall. In 1942 she married Clinton O. Wainwright in Ozark, Alab. He preceded her in death June 24, 2001.

Mrs. Wainwright was a homemaker. She volunteered 13,000 hours at Denton Regional Medical Center gift shop, which provides college scholarship funding.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, at Schmitz-Floyd-Andersen Funeral Home. Drs. Oran and Charlotte Nabors will officiate. Burial will be in Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas.

The family will be at the funeral home from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, for visitation.

Memorials may be made to the charity of choice.

Survivors include one daughter, Tina McCurley of Corinth; one son, Darrell Wainwright of Denton; and two grandchildren.

"Honey" Townsend

Robert W. "Honey" Townsend, 69, of Denton, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at Denton Community Hospital.

He was born July 8, 1932, in Borger, to Sam B. and Alta I. Townsend. On March 20, 1954, he married Charlene Townsend in Gainesville.

Mr. Townsend was a retired truck driver for Denton County, retiring in 1995. He was in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, and was a member of the Texas National Guard.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, in the chapel of Schmitz-Floyd-Andersen Funeral Home. The Rev. Sam Redfern will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.

The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, Aug. 14, for visitation.

Pallbearers will be Gary Sallee, Gary Dumm, Kevin Hattenbach, Randy Hare, Jerry Lee and Keith Hansel.

Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Townsend, Walker Townsend, Seth Carpenter, Joe Faulkner, Robby Faulkner and Eddie Millechamp.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Survivors include his wife, Charlene Townsend of Denton; three daughters, Tammy Hall of Denton, Kathy Butler of Greensboro, N.C., and Gay Lynn DeMore of Krugerville; two sons, Wayne Townsend of Bayou Vista and Tony Townsend of Springtown; three sisters-in-law, Kathleen Haren, Nancy Millechamp and Jane Jones; 22 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. His parents, one sister, Martha Cato, and one brother, Calvin Townsend, are deceased.

Margaret Gilbert

Margaret Elizabeth Gilbert, 75, of Denton, formerly of Anton, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at Denton Good Samaritan Village.

She was born Feb. 2, 1926, in O'Donnell, to Alfred W. and Rose (Schooler) Gibbs. On June 11, 1948, she married Thomas "Brad" Gilbert, in Lamesa. She attended Texas Tech University and the University of Texas.

Mrs. Gilbert was a retired teacher, teaching second grade in Lamesa for three years and fourth grade in Anton for 20 years. She served as president of the Lamesa Delphian Club, Anton Study Club, and the Anton 1950 Study Club; vice president of Anton PTA; and was a Girl Scout Den Mother.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Anton, where she was a member of the Women's Guild, Administrative Council, Pastor Parish Committee, and also taught Sunday School.

The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at the First United Methodist Church in Anton. The Rev. Bruce Parks will officiate. Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Anton, or to the Denton Good Samaritan Village.

Survivors include her husband of Denton; one daughter, Stacey Cornelius of Denton; one son, Thomas B. Gilbert Jr. of Arlington; one sister, Billye Frank Sumrow of Seminole; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Ernest Griffith

Ernest A. Griffith, 104, believed to be the eldest resident of Denton, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at the Vintage Health Care Center.

He was born Sept. 8, 1896, in Commanche, to Charles Daniel and Laura (Whitlock) Griffith. On Sept. 16, 1923, he married Clela Clay, in Wellington. She preceded him in death Feb. 17, 1991.

Prior to his retirement in Denton, Mr. Griffith spent 40 years in the cotton ginning and grain business. Early in his career, he worked as a bookkeeper and general office worker at Williams and Miller Gin Co. in Wellington. In 1926, he moved to Weinert, forming a partnership with Will Stith, and operated Griffith and Stith Independent Ginners. After Mr. Stith's death, the business operated as Griffith Gin and Grain Co. until it was sold in 1944. Mr. Griffith also spent 16 years managing cotton gins and over 50 grain elevators for the Kimball Grain Business in Woodward, Okla., and Sherman. Before 1943, he served on the Haskell County School Board and was a member of the Haskell County Rationing Board during World War II.

Mr. Griffith was a member of the Rotary Club for 40 years, a volunteer for 25 years at Flow Hospital, and an usher at the First United Methodist CHurch for 21 years. He has been a Mason with Scottish Rite of Dallas for 50 years and a Mason at the Blue Lodge in Wellington for 75 years. He also served as president of the "Baggy Pants Club," a group of men who meet weekly to solve world problems.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, in Cole Chapel at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bill Crouch will officiate. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. DeBerry Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.

The family will receive friends from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, in Flynn Hall Lounge at the First United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to the Ernest A. Griffith Scholarship Fund at the First United Methodist Church of Denton.

Survivors include his son, Dr. E. Clay Griffith of Dallas; two grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren.

Jimmy Howard

Sanger - Jimmy Howard, 25, of Sanger died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2001, at Denton Regional Medical Center.

Ronnie Jones

Ronald Earl "Ronnie" Jones, age 56, a resident of 2296 Woodland Road, Henderson, N.C., died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of Denton and was the son of Emory Jean Wilson Jones of Denton and the late Edwin Earl Jones. He was a retired regional manager for Yellow Freight Systems where he worked for 23 years and was a member of the Denton Downtown Bible Class.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17 at the First Baptist Church in Henderson, N.C., by Dr. Marion D. Lark. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.

In addition to his mother he is survived by his wife, Ruth Hight Jones, of the home; three sons, Ronald Earl "Ron" Jones Jr. of Dallas, and Gaither Wilson Jones and Hayden Edwin Jones, both of Denton; one brother, Wilson Ray Jones and his wife Jane of Ocala, Fla.; his maternal grandmother, Fannie Mae Wilson of Denton; and one granddaughter.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Benny Finch, Rusty Crocker, Henry Strause, John Wester, Donald Matthews, Eddie Ellington, Ed Copeland, Tommy Frazier, John McBride, Felix Simmons, R.G. Young Jr., C.G. Williams and Dr. Robert G. Currin.

The family will receive friends at the home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Vance Co. Rescue Squad, 1735 Maynard Street, Henderson, N.C., 27536.

Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Edith Arnold

Decatur - Edith L. Stephenson Arnold, 90, of Decatur died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001 in Bridgeport.

She was born April 23, 1911, in Fairview, W.Va. On Aug. 1, 1930, she married E.G. Stephenson in Cushing, Okla. He preceded her in death March 17, 1977. In 1980 she married Leslie Arnold. He preceded her in death in 1990.

Mrs. Arnold was a bookkeeper for Decatur Home Furnishings. She was an active member in many Christian and civic organizations, including the Decatur Hospital Auxiliary and the Decatur Quilting Club.

She was a member of the Church of Christ.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, in the chapel of Coker Funeral Home. Roger Rhoades will officiate. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Russell Cox Sr., Russell Cox Jr., Carey Cox, Isaac White and Tres House.

The family will be at the funeral Home from 6 to 7 p.m. today, Friday, Aug. 17 for visitation.

Memorials may be made to the charity of choice.

Survivors include one son, P.E. "Sonny" Stephenson of Houston; two daughters, Lenore D. "Peggy" Cox and Willetta Sue House, both of Ruidoso, N.M.; 6 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Chuck Bray

Ponder - Chuck Bray, 68, of Ponder died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at his residence.

Alma Cherry

Sanger - Alma Callie Cherry, 99, of Sanger died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at Care Inn of Sanger.

She was born July 4, 1902 in Paryin, to Jesse Board and Nannie Belle Rue Cherry.

Ms. Cherry was a self-employed beautician.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at the chapel of Coker Funeral Home in Sanger. Burial will be in Snager Cemetery.

She is survived by one sister, Theda W. Wilson of Ft. Worth.

Jimmy Howard

Sanger - Jimmy Ray Howard, 25, of Sanger died Thursday, Aug. 16 2001, at Denton Community Hospital.

He was born Dec. 17, 1975, in Denton County, to Buck and Norma Howard.

Mr. Howard attended Sanger schools and was employed as a manual laborer.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Bolivar Cemetery in Bolivar. The Rev. Mark Allen will officiate. Burial will follow.

The family will be at Coker Funeral Home of Sanger from 7 to 8 p.m. today, Friday, Aug. 18 for visitation.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Howard of Cleburne; his parents of Sanger; one daughter, Kallie Howard; two brothers, Joe Howard of Krum and Jeff Howard of Sanger; and his grandmother, Katherine Howard of Sanger.

Charles Watkins

Charles Watkins, 54, of Denton died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at Denton Regional Medical Center.
