Paul Revere Day

Decatur – Paul Revere Day, 79, of Decatur died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, in Decatur.

He was born Aug. 13, 1922, in Tupelo, Okla. On Feb. 7, 1948, he married Margie Rohus in Midland. She preceded him in death in 1992. He married Ann Norris on April 11, 1997.

Mr. Day was a farmer/rancher. He was also a veteran of World War II in the Army Air Force. He served in England, Germany and France.

He was a member of the Aurora Baptist Church.

The service will be 2 p.m. today, Sunday, Sept, 16, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Gene Fluker and Jerry Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery #1. Coker Funeral Home in Decatur is in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Henry T. Hicks, Jim Richards, Craig Shaw, Clay Wristen, Larry Avant, Wayne Long, and Allen Bingham.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Norris Day of Decatur; three daughters, Sharon Sipes of Decatur, Dee Yaws Day of Fort Worth and Patti Doherty of Azle; two brothers, Allen Day of Midland and Sam Day of McAllen; two sisters, Minnie Warner of Midland and Polly Day of Conroe; and four grandchildren.

Floreine Greene

Gordonville – Floreine Greene, 85, of Gordonville died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at Wilson N. Jones Hospital in Sherman.

She was born Aug. 7, 1916. Mrs. Green was a homemaker.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Sanger Cemetery. John Payne officiated.

Coker Funeral Home in Sanger is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include one brother-in-law, Lewis Byers of Waco; and one sister-in-law, Lanora Cantelou of Sanger.

Lorena B. Gilbreath

Copper Canyon – Lorena Bassinger Gilbreath, 78, of Copper Canyon died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at her home.

She was born June 26, 1923, in Hebron, to H. and Della Earl Bassinger. On July 3, 1943, she married Walter Gilbreath in Yuma, Ariz.

Mrs. Gilbreath was a lifelong resident of the area and a homemaker. She graduated from Lewisville High School in 1940, and she was a member of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International.

She was a member of Temple Baptist Church.

A service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Temple Baptist Church in Lewisville, followed by interment at Old Hall Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight, Monday, Sept. 17, at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home in Lewisville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 7610 N. Stemmons Freeway, #600, Dallas, Texas 75247-4228.

Survivors include her husband of Copper Canyon; one daughter, Trudy Davis of Copper Canyon; two sons, Steve and Ronald Gilbreath, both of Copper Canyon; one brother, Raymond Bassinger of Copper Canyon; one sister, Patsy Dickenson of Dickson, Okla.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

James Huffhines Jr.

James I. Huffhines Jr., 86, of Denton died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at Denton Regional Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 15, 1914, to James I. and Betty Mae (Wilkins) Huffhines, in Oklahoma City, Okla. He graduated from Denton High School and North Texas State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in the industrial arts. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army and received the American Defense Medal.

Mr. Huffhines retired after 25 years as quality control inspector with Bell Helicopter.

A service will be at 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, in the chapel of Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home. The Rev. John Lindsay will officiate. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery.

The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, for visitation.

Survivors include his son, James I. Huffhines III of Denton; one daughter, Anne McCrae of Carrollton; two stepdaughters, Marsha Leffel of Eufaula, Okla., and Sharon Hestand of Tioga; one sister, Marie Lovil of Atlanta, Texas; and six grandchildren. One sister, Ana Perle Reid, and one brother, Hubert K. Huffhines, are deceased.

Elmer R. Ary

Lewisville – Elmer Ray Ary, 76, of Lewisville, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at the Medical Center of Lewisville.

He was born July 31, 1925, in Elevenpoint, Ark., to Albert V. and May M. Perkett. On Dec. 7, 1946, he married Marion Wanrow in Seneca, Kan. He served in the U.S. Navy for three years, and in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years, including service during World War II.

A service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home in Lewisville. The Rev. Randy Templin will officiate. Interment will follow in Old Hall Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or the American Heart Association.

Survivors include his wife of Lewisville; one daughter, Rebecca Carol Copp of Dallas; two sons, William Ray Ary of Dallas and Paul Alan Ary of Denton; two sisters, Wanda Russell and Edna Mae Dudley of Claremore, Okla.; one brother, Bobby Gene Ary of Ephrata, Wash.; and four grandchildren. Two brothers, Tony Goade and Ray Doyle Ary, and one sister, Thelma Ary, are deceased.

Eloise S. Bennett

Dallas – Eloise StoneBennett, 87, of Dallas, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at Grace Presbyterian Village in Dallas.

She was born Dec. 15, 1913, in Decatur. In 1939 she married Robert Leslie Bennett. He is deceased.

Mrs. Bennett was a music teacher.

She was a member of the North Richland Baptist Church.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 18, at Oaklawn Cemetery in Decatur. Ron Salfen will officiate. Coker Funeral Home of Decatur is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include one son, Michael Scott Bennett of Dallas; and one granddaughter.

Winnie M. Dennis

Bowie – Winnie M. Dennis, 89, of Bowie died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Bellmire Home in Bowie.

She was born March 3, 1912, in Mt. Vernon. On Feb. 7, 1940, she married Wesley Madison Dennis in Marietta, Okla. He died in 1960. She was a resident of Denton from 1946 until 1997, when she moved to Bowie.

Mrs. Dennis was a homemaker. During World War II she worked at the WPA as a seamstress. At other times she worked at Russell-Newman Lingerie factory, at the Texas Café, was a foster grandparent at Denton State School, and was a snack bar worker at North Texas University.

A service was at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at Lighthouse Assembly of God Church in Bowie. The Rev. Greg Newton officiated. A graveside service was held at 4 p.m. Monday, at Belew Cemetery in Aubrey.

Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Baker and Gerry Burch of Bowie, and Amanda Cox of Fort Worth; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. One daughter, Robbie Jo Baker died in 1996, and two great-grandchildren died in 1986.

Margie C. Upton

Lewisville – Margie Conaway Upton, 78, of Lewisville, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Spring Season Health Care Center in Hurst.

She was born Nov. 3, 1922, in Lewisville, to John Newton and Georgie Ann (Russell) Conaway. In 1962 she married Jack Larkin Upton in Dallas. He died in 1983.

Mrs. Upton was an insurance claims administrator before her retirement.

She was a member of Flower Mound Presbyterian Church.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 18, at the Old Hall Cemetery in Lewisville. DeBerry Funeral Directors of Denton is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include one daughter, Elaine McGinnis of Colleyville; three granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

‘Lonnie’ Wall

Lake Dallas – Lonnell "Lonnie" Wall, 75, of Lake Dallas, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at the Medical Center of Lewisville.

He was born Dec. 3, 1925, in Winnsboro, La., to Robert and Ivory King Wall. On April 30, 1960, he married Ruby N. Galloway in Albuquerque, N.M. She died July 4, 1998.

Mr. Wall served in the U.S. Navy for 23 years, through both World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #10460 and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #88.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Swisher Cemetery in Lake Dallas.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight, Sept. 18, at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home in Lewisville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Survivors include three daughters, Sandra Wallace of Chandler, Ariz., Sheryl Mistretta of Lancaster, Calif., and Glenda McCulley of Sun City, Ariz.; three sons, Michael Ray Wall, Robert Dale Wall and Steven Neal Wall, all of Lake Dallas; one sister, Jimmie Kirksey of Houston; one brother, Ben Wall of Terra Bella, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

"Art" Seely Sr.

Arthur Jerome "Art" Seely Sr. went to be with our Lord and Savior on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at 5:45 p.m. He passed away after a very gallant struggle with cancer. He had been hospitalized at Plaza Medical Center in Fort Worth. He had not had any signs of the devastating cancer, other than weakness, when it was diagnosed on July 9, 2001.

He was born in Denton County, near Justin, on April 16, 1918, to George Arthur and Virginia Pearl (Hardeman) Seely. His family have resided in Denton County for over 125 years, and some of the family came with Stephen F. Austin’s colony before Texas won its independence from Mexico.

He attended public schools in Denton County, and graduated from Sanger High School in 1936. In 1938, he began his college education at North Texas State Teachers College (now the University of North Texas). He received a bachelor’s degree with majors in business, political science and education, in 1942. In 1949, he received a master’s degree in education from North Texas. He joined a long list of family members who also had been called into education as their profession.

He worked his way through North Texas by serving the citizens of Denton as a student fire fighter. He later served as a driver and captain of Denton Fire Department Station #3 (old West End). He also drove an ambulance for the Schmitz Funeral Home in order to earn extra money to attend college.

His first teaching position was in the White Deer-Skellytown Consolidated School District, and then he taught in the Gainesville Junior High School before coming back to Denton. In September of 1945 he taught history and was a coach at the old Denton Junior High School. In January of 1945 he was appointed as the principal of Robert E. Lee Elementary School at 206 East Mulberry. He helped design the current Lee School at 800 Mack Place, where he was principal until his retirement in 1980.

He met Norma Omstead on Sept. 8, 1946, and they were married the following Saturday, Sept. 14, 1946, in the First Baptist Church of Sanger. Norma had just moved to Sanger to complete her degree at North Texas. Her father asked his father if Art could help Norma find a place to live in Denton, and he did. Both served as elementary educators for the Denton Independent School District until their retirement in June of 1980.

Mr. Seely has been active in the Denton community by assisting various youth organizations, served as the director of the Denton County Youth Center (known as El Centro) for a number of years, beginning in December of 1945, served on the board of the Denton City-County Day Nursery for a number of years, he and Norma were active members of the First Baptist Church of Denton, and served as chairman of the Deacon Board at First Baptist.

He has had a life-long love of teaching children. He always believed it was a ministry, and took the needs of each child that attended Lee School very seriously. Besides a host of friends and former students, he is survived by his wife of 55 years, Norma Seely of Denton; their only child, Arthur J. "Art" Seely Jr. and his wife Renae of Denton; and their only grandchild, Arthur J. "A.J." Seely III of Denton. He is also survived by two sisters, Helen Bounds and Joy Ready of Sanger, and many nieces, nephews and cousins that live in the surrounding area.

Mr. Seely taught by example with love. His teachings and legacy will be long remembered by all those who knew him.

His funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Denton. Burial will follow at the Sanger Cemetery. The family will be available for visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the funeral home. The family is very grateful for the many prayers, calls, and thoughts that have been extended during Mr. Seely’s relatively brief illness.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home of Denton. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Denton Senior Adult Bus fund or to the American Cancer Society.

Raymond Salas

Raymond Salas, Sr., 73, of Denton died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, in Henrietta.

He was born July 23, 1928, in Las Vegas, N.M., to Cresencio and Amelia (Madrid) Salas. On Feb. 20, 1948, he married Sophie Marie Pino in Las Vegas, N.M.

Mr. Salas served in the U.S. Army and was a retired painter. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Msgr. Charles King will officiate. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Jose Luna, Joel Perez, Danny Salas, Jr., Charles Salas, Jr., Mitchell Salas and Rickey Luna.

The family will be at Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight, Thursday, Sept. 20, for visitation. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21 at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church or to the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Sophie Marie Salas of Denton; six daughters, Dolores Gonzalez, Dorothy Ozuna, and Joann Sarabia, all of Denton, Rebecca Nolan of Cleveland, Ohio, Diana Burrola of Marietta, Okla., and Suzie Luna of Denton; five sons, Daniel Salas, Raymond Salas, Jr., Gilbert Salas, Charles Salas, and Johnny Salas, all of Denton; five sisters, Betty Wilkerson of Denton, Tina Salas, Dora Salas, Lillian Salas, and Emma Salas, all of Las Vegas, N.M.; one brother, Benny Salas of Las Vegas; 41 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.

Arthur J. Seely

Arthur J. Seely, Sr., 83, of Denton died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at the Medical Plaza Medical Center in Fort Worth.

He was born April 16, 1918, in Justin to George Arthur and Virginia Pearl (Hardeman) Seely. On Sept. 14, 1946, he married Norma Omstead in Sanger.

Mr. Seely attended public schools and graduated from North Texas State Teachers College, now the University of North Texas, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He had worked as a teacher, a Denton firefighter, and was the principal of Lee Elementary School for 35 years before retiring in 1980.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon and as the chairman of deacons.

The service will be at 4 p.m. today, Thursday, Sept. 20, at the First Baptist Church. The Revs. Jeff Williams, Cliff Feeler, John Stout and Rick Ingel will officiate. Burial will follow in the Sanger Cemetery. Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Arthur J. Seely, Jr., A.J. Seely III, Bennie Noles, Floyd Glenn Smith, Mike Woodson, Lafayette Newland, Carroll Robinson, Wayne Allison and W.H. Rainey.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include his wife, Norma O. Seely of Denton; one son, Arthur J. Seely, Jr. of Denton; two sisters, Helen Bounds and Joy Ready, both of Sanger; and one grandson.
