‘Homer’ Sanford

H.W. "Homer" Sanford, 77, of Tioga, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at Denton Regional Medical Center.

Raymond E. Abbitt

The Rev. Raymond Edgerton Abbitt, S.T.D., age 89, passed away Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Denton Good Samaritan Health Care Center. Though retired, Fr. Abbitt was assisting in St. Barnabas and St. David Episcopal churches in Denton.

Fr. Abbitt was born in Victoria, Va., April 12, 1912, and received his theological education at the General Theological Seminary, New York City. He was ordained to the Diaconate in 1940 in Baltimore, Md., and to the priesthood in 1941 in Sagada, Mountain Province, the Philippines. He served in the Philippines for 12 years, four years as a prisoner of war.

From 1954 to 1958 he was an assistant at St. John’s in Dallas. In 1958 he married Erluth Elaine Epting. She passed away May 20, 1993. He was rector of All Saints Episcopal Church, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, 1958 to 1968; rector of St. Luke’s-in-the-Meadow Episcopal Church, Fort Worth, 1968 to 1972; rector of St. Paul’s, Frederifsted, St. Croix, V.I., 1972 to 1974; rector of the Bishop Mason Retreat and Conference Center, Diocese of Dallas, 1974 until his retirement in 1978.

He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Travis DuPriest of Petersburg, Va., and his brother, Mr. John A. Abbitt of Hockessin, Del. His brother, Mr. Alford Lee Abbitt, passed away in 1993.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at St. David Episcopal Church in Denton. The Rev. Roy Baines will be officiating the service. Entombment will be at the Bishop Mason Retreat Center.

In lieu of flowers, St. David Episcopal Church may be contacted for a list of Fr. Abbitt’s favorite charities.

Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Stephen R. Ludlum

Aubrey – Stephen R. Ludlum, 78, of Aubrey, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at his home.

He was born Oct. 10, 1922, in Detroit, Mich., to Gladys and Robert Ludlum. He married Jane Webb on March 22, 1947. He graduated from the University of Houston in 1950.

Mr. Ludlum was a member of Aubrey United Methodist Church. He worked for Allstate Insurance for 30 years and retired in 1985. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years during World War II and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at the United Methodist Church in Aubrey. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Aubrey Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jane; his three children: son, Barron Ludlum of Aubrey; daughter, Jan Baxter of Mesquite; daughter, Lisa Cook of Aubrey; and three grandchildren, Allison and Paul Baxter and Billy Feathers.

Slay Memorial Funeral Center is in charge of arrangements.

Thelma W. Castle

Thelma Wintin Castle, 96, of Denton made her transition from this world on Sept. 23, 2001. Thelma was born March 7, 1905, in Tyler, Texas, to Minnie Bell Easley Stark and Frank B. Stark, and she moved with her family to Ardmore, Okla., at an early age. She was employed by the First National Bank and Trust in Ardmore from 1922 to 1935 and the First National & Trust in Tulsa, Okla., for four years.

Thelma was past matron of the Eastern Star, Matty Bruce Chapter #440 in Ardmore, Okla. She was also a past president of Oklahoma Grand Represen-tatives Association.

Thelma married W. Elmer Wintin on Oct. 7, 1935, in Ardmore. He preceded her in death in October of 1975. She married Ernest L. Castle on Jan. 1, 1979, and they lived in Lindsay, Okla., until February of 1989, when they moved to Denton, Texas, Lake Forest Good Samaritan Village. Ernest Castle preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 1992.

Survivors include her nephew, Dale and wife Jeannie Branum of Denton, and stepson, E. Lamoyne Castle of Richardson, nephew, Bennie Benson of London, England; and two step-granddaughters and five step-great-grandchildren; and 11 great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Irene Branum, Edith Plaistridge and Hazel Benson.

Thelma will be missed by all who were privileged to know here.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 26, at the Mead Chapel at the Lake Forest Good Samaritan Village, with interment at 4:15 p.m. at the Hillcrest Memorial Park in Ardmore, Okla. The Rev. Dale Branum and the Rev. Mack Tomlinson will officiate.

DeBerry Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.

Ora Lee McGee

Ora Lee McGee, 66, of Denton died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, in Denton.

She was born May 4, 1935, in Ponder, to Alberta and Felix Gray.

She was a member of St. Andrew Church of God in Christ.

A service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. The Rev. Mark R. Chew will officiate.

The family will be at Peoples Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight, Thursday, Sept. 27, for visitation.

Survivors include three sons, Kenneth McGee, Ernest McGee and Donnie Simmons, all of Denton; four daughters, Shirley McGee, Shirley Modester, Patricia McGee and Wanda McGee, all of Denton; two brothers, Donnie Gray and Marvin Gray, both of Denton; three sisters, Bertie Bethany, Willie Garrett and Shirley Ebron, all of Denton; and 12 grandchildren.

Dorothy E. Scott

Dorothy Eleanor Scott, 86, of Denton died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at Denton Regional Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 24, 1915, in Baltimore, Md.

Mrs. Scott was a homemaker. She was a charter member of Denton Benefit League, the Arts Guild, Greater Denton Arts Council, RSVP, Emily Fowler Friends of the Library, the World Wildlife Society, and Denton Humane Society.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at St. David’s Episcopal Church. Roy Baines will officiate. Schmitz-Floyd-Andersen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Denton Humane Society.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald Scott of Norcross, Ga., and Clayton Scott III of Savannah, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Ethel F. Church

Haslet – Ethel Florence Church, 81, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at a Fort Worth nursing home.

She was born Feb. 11, 1920, in Franklin County. She was married to Claude Lumpkins and Amos Church. They preceded her in death.

Mrs. Church operated a dry cleaning business.

She was Baptist.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, in the chapel of Coker Funeral Home in Decatur. Carroll Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Decatur.

The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight, Thursday, Sept. 27, for visitation.

Survivors include one sister, Ruby Rogers of Kentucky; three grandsons; and six great-grandchildren.

Otis C. Howard

Little Elm – Otis Carl Howard, 78, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at his residence.

He was born June 13, 1923, in Vinson, Alab., to Dan and Birtie (Robinson) Howard. He attended public schools. On Nov. 1, 1963, he married Laverne Eula Davidson in McKinney.

Mr. Howard was employed as a security guard at Job Corps in McKinney.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Little Elm.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, in Little Elm Cemetery. The Rev. Buddy Owens will officiate.

The family will be at Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home of Denton from 6 to 7 p.m. tonight, Thursday, Sept. 27, for visitation.

He is survived by his wife, Laverne E. Howard of Little Elm.

"Homer" Sanford Jr.

Tioga – H.W. "Homer" Sanford Jr., 77, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at Denton Regional Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 9, 1923, in Van Alstyne, to Homer Wilson and Ruth Elinoir (Old) Sanford Sr. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Sanford was a retired grocer.

He was a member of County Line Baptist Church in Tioga.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at Oakwood Cemetery in Whitesboro. Charles Hite and Randy Ganzer will officiate.

Family visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight, Thursday, Sept. 27, in the chapel of Goen-Hudgens Funeral Home in Denton.

Survivors include his wife, Maurice Sanford of Tioga; two sons, Carroll Bruce Sanford of Rosharon and Michael Lee Sanford of Decatur; two daughters, Carolyn Sue Ganzer and Pamela Kay Arnold, both of Denton; one sister, Mary Ann Aycock of Fort Worth; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Janice E. Moore

Janice Elaine Moore, 39, of Allen, Texas, passed away on Sept. 24, 2001, in Dallas. She was born on Sept. 9, 1962, to Raymond and Jane (Simpson) Revie in Little Falls, N.Y. She married Darryl Moore on May 21, 1988, in Springfield, Mo. She was a piano teacher and of the Baptist faith. Janice was a 1988 graduate of Southwest Missouri State University. She was a director and student affiliate assistant coordinator for Texas Music Teachers Association, President of Plano Music Teachers Association from 1997-1998, and Chair of Ensemble Programs for Plano Music Teachers Association. She also served as a judge for local music festivals and served as church pianist.

Janice is survived by her husband of 13 years, Darryl Moore of Allen; son, Collin Moore of Allen; parents, Raymond and Jane Revie of Springfield, Mo.; father and mother-in-law, Grady and Doris Moore of Denton; brothers, Kevin and Philip Revie, both of Springfield, Mo.; sister, Heather Murrell, also of Springfield; several nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and many friends.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at the McKinney Fellowship Bible Church. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. at New Hope Cemetery in Mineola, Texas. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home of McKinney.

Sidney Hodges, 77, of Denton died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at the Medical Plaza in Fort Worth.

Jennee Warren Wright Lawhorn, 91, of Denton died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at Denton Regional Medical Center.

Betty J. Lipsey

Betty J. Lipsey, 72, of Denton died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at her home.

She was born May 20, 1929, in Minco, Okla., to Barney and Mary Doyle. She attended Denton public schools. On March 22, 1950, she married Francis D. Lipsey in Denton. He is deceased.

Mrs. Lipsey was a production worker for Victor Equipment for nine years, retiring in 1990.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at Jackson Cemetery in Krum. The Rev. Bobby Bryan will officiate.

The family will be at DeBerry Funeral Directors in Denton from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight, Friday, Sept. 28, for visitation.

Survivors include two daughters, Frances Tonn and Deborah Blakeley, both of Denton; one son, Joe Paul Lipsey of Denton; two sisters, Lois Queen of Colleyville and Bonnie Thompson of Denton; one brother, Ted Doyle of Foley, Ala.; and five grandchildren.

Robert Craig Brown

Lake Winnebago, Mo. – Robert Craig Brown, 43, of Lake Winnebago, Mo., died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., from injuries received in an accident.

He was born June 14, 1958, in Kansas City, Mo., to Robert and Susanne Duke Brown. He graduated from Denton High School in 1976, attended Central Methodist College in Fayette, Mo., and then graduated from the University of North Texas.

Mr. Brown taught English for eight years at East High School in Kansas City, where he was also the head football coach. He became an assistant coach and taught English at Kemper military Academy Community College for two years. He worked as a professional fund-raiser, a sales engineer with G.T. Sales, and with Robert Brown Associates. He had just begun Brown Brothers Construction Co. Inc., a general contracting company.

He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church.

A Celebration of Life and Faith will be at 7 p.m. tonight, Friday, Sept. 28, and a memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, both at Christ United Methodist Church in Independence, Mo. Newcomer’s & Sons Floral Hills Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Lars Andersen, Farrell Avants, Andy Kerestine, Shane Reneau, Byrle Roberts, Mike Sauls and Daniel Schneider.

Memorial donations may be made to Christ UMC, East 39th St., Independence, Mo. 64055.

Survivors include his parents of Lake Winnebago, Mo.; and two brothers, David Brown of Fort Collins, Colo., and Mark Brown of Austin.
