"Shorty" Walker

Raymond W. "Shorty" Walker, 72, of Denton died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Dec. 19, 1928, in Little Elm, Texas, to Glen and Fannie Walker. He attended Little Elm and Frisco schools. On Oct. 17, 1954, he married Amanda Borchardt in Marietta, Okla.

Mr. Walker served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1952 and was awarded the Bronze Star after volunteering for combat on Heartbreak Ridge with the 7th Division.

He owned and operated Walker Drilling Service. He began his career with Western Union in 1945 as a lineman which spanned 25 years. After which in 1970 he went to work for General Telephone until his retirement in 1990.

Mr. Walker was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, as well as holding the honor of Noble Grand of the I.O.O.F. Lodge in Terrell, Texas.

He is survived by his loving wife, Amanda of 45 years; one son and his fiancé, Doyle and Teresa Walker of Denton; one sister and brother-in-law, Francine and J.K. Sprouse of El Paso; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Roland and Wilma Walker of Greenwood and Charles and Doris Walker of Midland; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and close friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, in the chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors. The Rev. Bob Hagerman will officiate. Burial will follow in the Little Elm Cemetery, Little Elm, Texas.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Borchardt, Rick Hinckley, Mike Green, Truman Walker, Glen Walker, Joe Walker and Craig Murdock. Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Shahan, Harley Stewart, J.K. Sprouse, Wayne Housley, E.K. Waldrum and Leon Yates.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today, Sunday, Oct. 7, at the funeral home.

Raymond touched the lives of so many with his generosity. His love for his family and friends will truly be missed.

DeBerry Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.

Roberta Zost

Roberta Evans Harte Zost, 80, of Denton died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Denton Community Hospital.

She was born Nov. 27, 1920 in Plainview to Ralph and Mildred Thomson Harte. On Jan.9, 1943, she married Elmer G. Zost in St. Louis, Mo.

She retired in 1982 from the U.S. Army White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico as a secretary.

Mrs. Zost was a member of Denton First Ward of the Church of Latter-day Saints.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at the Masonic Cemetery, Las Cruces, N.M. Bishop Gutierrez will officiate. Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and son are in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her husband of Denton; three daughters, Karen Richards of Lancaster, Calif., Jean Nishimoto of Palm Desert, Calif., and Mariel Barnes of Denton; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Bill McCutcheon

Lake Dallas – W.A. "Bill" McCutcheon, 79, of Lake Dallas died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Lake Village Nursing Center in Lewisville.

He was born Nov. 30, 1921, to Eumie and Fannie Owens McCutcheon. On June 10, 1944, he married Josephine Bates in Rockwall.

Mr. McCutcheon served in the 112th Cavalry during World War II.

He was Baptist.

A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 12, at Swisher Cemetery, Lake Dallas.

The family will be at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home in Lewisville from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday, Oct. 11, for visitation.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include his wife of Lake Dallas; one son, Marion Joe McCutcheon of Lake Dallas; one brother, Carl McCutcheon of Irving; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Jerry Wayne McCutcheon; and one grandson Jerry Don McCutcheon.

Acacia Aviles

Acacia Aviles, 42, of Denton died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Denton Regional Medical Center.

She was born June 8, 1959, in Nombre de Dios, Durango, Mexico. On Oct.13, 1976, she married Ernesto Aviles, in Olton.

Mrs. Aviles was a supervisor at the Longmeadow Care Center in Justin.

She was a Jehovah Witness.

A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. at Roselawn Memorial Park, Denton.

The family will be at DeBerry Funeral Directors from 7 to 8 p.m., Friday Oct. 12, for visitation.

Survivors include her husband of Denton; her parents, Manuel and Matilda Munoz of Olton; four daughters, Phyllis Munoz of Denton, Maribel, Jessica, and Angie Aviles of Denton; two sons, Josue Aviles and Ernesto Aviles Jr. of Denton; four sisters, Yolanda Velasquez of Valley View, Rosa Amaya and Mary Sue Simental of Denton, and Amparo Garcia of Hart; five brothers, Javier Munoz of Dimmitt, Armando Munoz of Mexico, Jorge Munoz of El Paso, Robert Munoz of Amarillo and Manuel Munoz Jr. of Denton; and 14 grandchildren.

Bobby Copeland

Bobby Gene Copeland, 71, of Denton died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Denton Regional Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 13, 1930, in Denton to James Marvin and Mattie Lola (Bray) Copeland.

Mr. Copeland was employed by Kroger Grocery Stores.

He was a member of the Assembly of God Church.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 13, at Oak Grove Cemetery, Denton.

Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 13, at Goen-Hudgens Funeral Home.

Survivors include four brothers, Arthur Lee Copeland of Aubrey, J.C. Copeland of Midland, Jimmy Ray Copeland of Gulf Shores, Al and David Gleen Copeland of Denton; and five sisters, Velma Rainey of Aubrey, Lola Clark of Carrolton, Frances Lucille Russell of Richardson, and Billie Estelle Baker of Dallas.

Kristen Patton

Kristen Alice Patton, 18, of Denton died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Denton Regional Medical Center, from a brief serious illness.

She was born July 13, 1983, in Lewisville to Eugene George Patton and Kathryn May (Shaw) Patton.

Miss Patton was a senior at Ryan High School in Denton, where she was the editor of the yearbook and was on the A honor roll. She was employed at Denton Community Hospital as a radiology clerk.

A service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, in the Chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors. The Rev. David Smith will officiate.

The family will be at DeBerry Funeral Directors from 6:30 to 8 p.m., today, Friday, Oct.12, for visitation.

Memorials may be made to Children’s Medical Center of Dallas, 2777 Stemmons Freeway, Suite 1025 Dallas, Texas 75207.

Survivors include her parents of Denton; one sister, Teresa Rhodes of Pearland; and one brother, Steve Patton of Denton.

Warren Smith

Warren W. Smith, 88, of Denton died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at Denton Regional Medical Center.

He was born June 22, 1913, in Hoquiam, Wash., to Charles and June (Warren) Smith. On Sept. 17, 1938, he married Hope Solinger in Hoquiam, Wash. She died Oct. 17, 2000.

Mr. Smith retired as a superintendent for the F.A.A. Academy in Oklahoma City, Okla.

He was Presbyterian.

A memorial service will be Saturday morning, Oct. 13, 2001, at the Grey Stone Presbyterian Church in Oklahoma City, Okla. Mulkey-Mason Jack Schmitz & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Smith of Denton, and Mike Smith of Columbia, S.C.; one sister, Margaret Leach of Shelton, Wash.; and 3 grandchildren.

Lela Stanley

Decatur – Lela Hix Stanley, 84, of Decatur died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, in Decatur.

She was born Oct. 18, 1915, in Wise County. In 1934 she married Paul Stanley. He died in Feb. 1986.

Mrs. Stanley was employed as a title clerk for James Wood Motors.

She was a member of the Victory Family Church in Decatur.

A service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at First Baptist Church, Decatur. Allen Bates will officiate, assisted by Don Spain. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Decatur.

Pallbearers will be James Ray Garrett, Terry Wood, Ronnie Eison, Johnny Evans, Gerald Lanier and Eddie Hale.

The family will be at Coker Funeral Home, Decatur, from 6 to 8 p.m., today, Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, for visitation.

Survivors include one son, David Stanley of Boyd; her daughter, Shirley Wood of Decatur; her sister, Bonnie Jordan of Bridgeport; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Benny Stanley.

Inez E. Yarbrough

Aubrey – Inez E. Yarbrough, 90, of Aubrey, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Denton Community Hospital.

She was born April 1, 1911, in Center, to Peter and Ellen (Spivey) Bruner. She attended public schools. In 1949 she married Harvey E. Yarbrough in Oklahoma. He died Sept. 19, 1993.

Mrs. Yarbrough was a homemaker.

She was Baptist.

A service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, in the chapel of Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home in Denton. The Rev. Buddy Owens will officiate. Burial will follow in Belew Cemetery, Aubrey.

Pallbearers will be Mike Crowder, Pat Crowder, Bob Russell, Vic George, Bennie Erwin and Mark Lamar.

The family will be at the funeral home from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, for visitation.

Survivors include three daughters, Foy E. Crowder of Aubrey, June Russell of Carrollton, and Mary Lynn George of Sanger; one sister, Wilma Simpson of Yorktown; two brothers, Walter Lee Grimes of Fort Worth and Jerry Bruner of Aztec, N.M.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

LaVelle Yarbrough

Houston – LaVelle Henry Yarbrough of Houston, devoted and loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, passed peacefully on Mon-day, Oct. 8, 2001, at the age of 82.

Mrs. Yarbrough, daughter of Joe and Eva Folger Henry, was born in Barry County, Mo., on May 24, 1919. In 1925 the family moved to Pryor, Okla., where LaVelle graduated from Pryor High School in 1937 and was a member of the First Baptist Church. In 1942, LaVelle was married to Joe Yarbrough in Tulsa, Okla. She graduated from Hillcrest Hospital of Nursing in Tulsa, received her bachelor’s of science from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas, and attended graduate school at the University of Houston.

LaVelle, a registered nurse, was director of nursing in Wichita Falls, Texas, and then director of the department for practical nursing at Texas Woman’s University in Denton. LaVelle was a founding member of the Altrusa Club of Denton. She moved to Houston, Texas, to accept the position of director of nurses, teaching at St. Luke’s and Texas Children’s Hospital and joined the Houston Altrusa Club. LaVelle served as director of nursing at Rosewood General Hospital for many years and continued to work in the medical field until her mid-seventies.

LaVelle was preceded in death by her sister, Nadine Westmoreland. She is survived by her sons, Thomas Douglas Yarbrough of Houston and Lynn Allen Yarbrough and wife, Edna, of Canyon Lake, Texas; her grandson, Abraham Yar-brough of Houston; granddaughters, Ami Yarbrough Cantu and husband J.T. of San Antonio, and Sarah Yarbrough Douthitt and husband Shane of Atlanta, Ga.; her sisters, Dale Butcher of Kansas City, Mo., Ruth Burch and husband Bob of Tulsa, and JoAnn Burnley, also of Tulsa; her life-long friend, Sibyl Wilson of Houston; and many nieces and nephews.

She was responsible for bringing the needs of the mentally impaired in Texas to the attention of the Altrusa Club of Houston. During her presidency of Altrusa, the club began a project, Hearts-Hands for Service Foundation Inc. Proceeds from this fund assist children and families with mental, emotional, physical or educational problems.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to Hearts-Hands for Service Foundation, Altrusa Club of Houston, c/o Yvonne Landry, 9778 Oak Point Drive, Houston, Texas 77055.

There will be a viewing and visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. today, Friday, Oct. 12, at Forest Park Funeral Home, 12800 Westheimer Road. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Hilton Westchase, 9999 Westheimer Road in Houston.

Violet W. Wright

Plano – Violet Wylie Wright was born Sept. 17, 1906; she passed away at Heritage Manor Nursing home in Plano, Texas. She went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bailey B. Wright, on March 2, 1968, and her son, Billy B. Wright, on Feb. 17, 2001. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Irene Wright; two grandchildren, Brenda Wright Cooner and husband Steve of Dallas, and Billy B. Wright II and wife Janna of Houston; two great-granddaughters, Madeline and Abigail Wright; and numerous nie-ces and nephews of Denton and Sanger.

She was a faithful Christian and worshiped at the Pearl Street Church of Christ and Welch Street Church of Christ in Denton.

She lived in Lubbock 46 years, and moved to Denton in 1974. Violet worked in retail sales, retiring after 57 years.

The Lord has been merciful and generous in both her life and her death. Thanks be to God, for the Lord is good and his love endures forever.

A visitation will be held one hour before the 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, service in the chapel of Schmitz-Floyd-Andersen Funeral Home, 120 S. Carroll Blvd., Denton (940-382-2214).

Interment will be at Roselawn Memorial Park, Denton. The service will be officiated by Terry Collins, minister of Welch Street Church of Christ, Denton.
