Nathan Rhett Smith
Oct. 27, 1907 — June 2, 2000

CALDWELL — Services for Nathan Rhett Smith, 92, of Caldwell are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell.

The Rev. Ernest Turney will officiate. Entombment will be Monday at Sunset Memorial Park in San Antonio.

Mr. Smith died Friday in Burleson/ St. Joseph Health Center in Caldwell.

He was born in Caldwell and was retired as a trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety. Upon his retirement in 1972, he had held the rank of captain longer than anyone in the history of the department. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Caldwell and the Yellowhouse Lodge No. 841 AF & AM of Lubbock.

Survivors include two nieces, Marilil Smith Rychlik and husband, Max, of Austin, and Linda Jannett Chamberlain and husband, Don, of Caldwell; a nephew, Nathan Bowers Smith of Santa Fe, N.M.; and numerous other relatives.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Texas Department of Public Safety Museum, P.O. Box 141603 Austin, Texas 78714-1603 or to the First United Methodist Church, 306 West Fox Street, Caldwell, Texas 77836.

Irvin Marion May Jr.
March 20, 1939 — June 2, 2000

Services for Irvin Marion May Jr., 61, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Monday at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Bryan.

The Rev. Legree Finch will officiate. Burial will be at 5 p.m. Monday at Lakewood Cemetery in Henderson, Texas.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan and from 9 a.m. to the time of the services Monday at the church.

Dr. May died Friday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

He was born in Dallas and lived in Bryan for 30 years. He taught Texas history at Texas A&M University for six years and at Blinn College for 18 years. He held degrees from Kilgore College, the University of Texas, Baylor University and the University of Oklahoma. He was the recipient of the Ralph Steen Award for distinguished service from the East Texas Historical Society, the Ottis Lock Award for excellence in teaching and the Coral H. Tullis Award from the Texas State Historical Association for the best book in Texas history in 1980. He was an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America and earned the bronze, silver and golden palm, along with every merit badge offered. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he served as a ruling elder, was the stated clerk of the South Texas Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of America and served on the missions, ministerial relations and administrative committees.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia May of Bryan; two daughters and a son-in-law, Emily May of San Francisco, Calif., and Mary and Kevin Bollman of Dallas; stepchildren, Michael Saul and wife, Julie, of Sweeny, Texas, David Saul and wife, Debbie, of College Station and Lori Ness and husband, Chris, of San Angelo, Texas; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the South Texas Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of America, Westminster Presbyterian Church of Bryan, Blinn College scholarship fund for needy students or to a charity of choice.

Minnie Lillian Nowlin
April 21, 1948 — May 31, 2000

Services for Minnie Lillian Nowlin, 52, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Monday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Bryan.

The Rev. C.W. Stewart of Mt. Olive Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Jones-Washington Mortuary in Bryan.

Mrs. Nowlin died Wednesday in Southwood Nursing Home.

She was a lifetime resident of Bryan and was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. He was employed by Home Health Care.

Survivors include her husband, Bennie Nowlin of Bryan; two sons, Patrick Nowlin and Charles Nowlin, both of Bryan; two daughters, Tameshia Jackson and Faith Nowlin, both of Bryan; a brother, Johnny Sims of Bryan; five sisters, Reva Sims, Tiny Williams and Henrietta Sims, all of Bryan, Gladys Jones of Dallas and Virginia Hawthrone of Groveton, Texas; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Gladys Lillian Newsom Parrish
Dec. 2, 1914 — June 3, 2000

CAMERON — Services for Gladys Lillian Newsom Parrish, 85, of Cameron are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hermosa Drive Baptist Church in Artesia, N.M.

The Rev. J.B. Craft will officiate. Burial will be in Twin Oaks Memorial Park.

Local arrangements are under the direction of Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron.

Mrs. Parrish died Saturday in a Cameron nursing home.

She was born in Kent County, Texas, and was a member of Victory Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, C.A. “Shorty” Parrish.

Survivors include a son, Gary Parrish of Artesia, N.M.; six daughters, Mary Dean Sowders of Magnet Cove, Ark., Charlene McGary of Artesia, N.M., Roma Dunn of Granbury, Texas, Eddie Blevins of Eunice, N.M., Ellen Madron of College Station and Bobbie Ranspot of Cameron; three brothers, Amos Newsom of Las Vegas, Junior Newsom and Virgil Newsom, both of Artesia, N.M.; two sisters, Grace Clanton and Eva Neel, both of Artesia; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Christopher Reeves Paralysis Foundation, 500 Morris Avenue, Springfield, N.J. 07081.

Irvin M. May Jr.
1939 — 2000

Dr. Irvin May died on Friday, June 2, 2000 in Bryan, Texas, at the age of 61 years.

Known by his friends as “Irv” and his students as “Doc May” he was a devoted husband and father, a faithful leader and servant in his church, and professionally, a lifelong educator. He taught Texas history at Texas A&M University for six years, and at Blinn College for the past eighteen years. Irv held degrees from Kilgore College, the University of Texas, Baylor University and the University of Oklahoma.

He was the recipient of the Ralph Steen Award for distinguished service from the East Texas Historical Society, the Ottis Lock Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Coral H. Tullis Award from the Texas State Historical Association for the Best Book in Texas History, 1980. Irv distinguished himself in the Boy Scouts of America as an Eagle Scout, recipient of the Bronze, silver and golden palm, and earned every merit badge scouting offers.

Irv was active in his church and served as a ruling elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church and as the Stated Clerk of the South Texas Presbytery, Presbyterian Church in America. He also served on the missions, ministerial relations, and administration committees of the Presbytery.

Irv is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; daughters and son-in-law, Emily May of San Francisco and Mary and Kevin Bollman of Dallas; and stepchildren, Mike Saul and wife, Julie, of Sweeny, David Saul and wife, Debbie, of College Station, Lori Ness and husband, Chris, of San Angelo; and six grandchildren who dearly loved him.

Services for Dr. May will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3333 Oak Ridge, Bryan, Texas, on Monday, June 5, 2000 at 10 a.m. Internment will be at Lakewood Cemetery in Henderson, Texas. Visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

Dr. May’s expressed wishes were that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to South Texas Presbytery, Westminster Presbyterian Church of Bryan, Blinn Scholarship Fund for needy students or to a charity of choice.

Claudia Marlene Brown
Aug. 29, 1952 — June 3, 2000

CENTERVILLE — Graveside services for Claudia Marlene Brown, 47, of Conroe, Texas, are set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Woods Family Cemetery south of Centerville on the Double Diamond Ranch.

The Rev. Thomas Gilliam will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Walters Funeral Home in Centerville.
Mrs. Brown died Saturday at her home.

She was born in Morristown, Tenn., and had lived in Conroe for three years. She previously lived in Burlington, Iowa, and was a homemaker. She collected plates and dolls.

Survivors include her husband, David L. Brown of Conroe; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bradley and Kelly Brown of Bloomington, Ill., and Bryan Brown of Mediapolis, Iowa; her mother, Fanny Rodriquez of Stockbridge, Ga.; a brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Mary Woods of Conroe and Centerville; two grandchildren; three nephews; and six nieces.

Sarah Elizabeth Thomas Dayton
Feb. 12, 1928 — June 2, 2000

Services for Sarah Elizabeth Thomas Dayton, 72, of College Station are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the A&M Church of Christ in College Station.

Ken Wilke of the A&M Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Longview Cemetery in Bigfoot, Texas.

Viewing will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.
Mrs. Dayton died Friday in Hermann Hospital in Houston.

She was born in Bigfoot, Texas, and had lived in College Station since 1954. She retired in 1995 as a secretary for the Civil Engineering Department at Texas A&M University and was a member of the A&M Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Hugh Dayton.
Survivors include four sons and three daughters-in-law, Jerry and Nicole Dayton of Katy, Texas, Thomas and Suzie Dayton of San Antonio, Harvey Dayton of Conroe, Texas, and Clifford and Alana Dayton of Austin; a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Jim Aduddle of Sugarland, Texas; a brother and sister-in-law, George F. and Luvinia Thomas of Goliad, Texas; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the A&M Church of Christ Missions Fund, 1901 Harvey Mitchell Parkway, College Station, Texas, or to the Impact Church of Christ, 1704 Weber, Houston, Texas.

John Vernon Hattaway
Sept. 29, 1920 — June 2, 2000

FORT PIERCE, Fla. — Services for John Vernon Hattaway, 79, of Vero Beach, Fla., are set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Aycock Funeral Home in Fort Pierce.

Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Hattaway died Friday at his home.

He was born in Glenwood, Ga., and had lived in Vero Beach for three months, having previously lived in Leesburg, Fla., and Orlando, Fla. He was retired as an instructor on aircraft systems maintenance with the U.S. Air Force and was a Master Sergeant. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Vero Beach.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Hattaway of Vero Beach; two sons, William E. Hattaway of Tampa, Fla., and Carl David Hattaway of Wellborn; a daughter, Linda Musgrave of Wichita Falls; two brothers, Robbie Hattaway of Milledgeville, Ga., and Elmer Hattaway of Hiawassee, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the VNA Hospice Foundation, 1111 36th Street, Vero Beach, Fla. 32963 or the American Heart Association, North Central Florida Area, 237 East Marks Street, Orlando, Fla. 32803.

Services for Albert Earl Williams, 37, of Bryan are set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Full Gospel Baptist Church in Bryan.

The Bishop J.C. Ebbs of United Full Gospel Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Jones-Washington Mortuary in Bryan.
Mr. Williams died Friday in Bryan.

He was a lifelong resident of Bryan and was a member of United Full Gospel Baptist Church.

Survivors include seven brothers and four sisters-in-law, Andrew Williams Jr., Alfred Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Lawerence Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Williams and James Williams, all of Bryan, Mr. and Mrs. Royal Williams of Lubbock, Texas, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Williams of Pflugerville, Texas; three sisters, Linda Taylor and Gwen Tennell, both of Bryan, and Carolyn Williams of Austin; father, Andrew Willie Williams of Bryan; and Angelo Garza of Bryan.

Memorials may be made to MHMR of the Brazos Valley.

James William Hemming
Feb. 7, 1916 — June 4, 2000

Memorial services for James William Hemming, 84, of Bryan are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.

The Rev. Ray Marshall of Reliance Baptist Church will officiate.

Mr. Hemming died Sunday in College Station Medical Center.

He had lived in Bryan for four years and was a retired electrician. He was a member of the Church of England.

Survivors include his wife, May Marsh Hemming of Bryan; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Harold White of Bryan; a sister, Pat Faulkner of England; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
