July 18, 1915 — June 5, 2000

HEARNE — Services for Mary Virginia McNeel, 84, of Bryan are set for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Hearne.

The Rev. Larry Blackmon of the First Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Norwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Heartfield Funeral Home in Hearne.
Mrs. McNeel died Monday in Crestview Nursing Home in Bryan.

She was born in Cameron and grew up in Branchville, Texas, and was a homemaker. She was past worthy matron of Eastern Star Hearne Chapter, past member of the Hearne P.T.A. and Band Parents and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hearne.
She was preceded in death by her husband, E.M. “Bully” McNeel.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Edwina and Glen Brewer of Bryan; a brother, John A. Looney of Cameron; a sister, Beth Smithwick of Richardson, Texas; a grandson; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 105 Davis Street, Hearne, Texas 77859.

James ‘Red’ Phillips
Aug. 9, 1929 — June 2, 2000

Services for James “Red” Phillips, 70, of Navasota are set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Bryan.

Elder Milton Gooden Sr. of New Testament Pentecostal Church will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Jones-Washington Mortuary in Bryan.

Mr. Phillips died Friday in Sherwood Health Care in Bryan.

He was born in Iola and had lived in Navasota for 30 years. He was a laborer at the Navasota Auction Barn in Navasota.

Survivors include a son, James Darrell Phillips of College Station; two stepsons and a daughter-in-law, Carl and Georgia Wheeler of Dallas and Bobby Dewayne Twitty of Bryan; four daughters, Shairlyncq Phillips Taylor of College Station, Deborah Phillips Dove of Orange Park, Fla., Sylvia Phillips Bell of Pensacola, Fla., and Donna Phillips Druery of Bryan; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Emily Irene Riley
Feb. 24, 1908 — June 5, 2000

Graveside services for Emily Irene Riley, 92, of Tyler were held Tuesday at Reliance Cemetery.

Mrs. Riley died Monday at Hospice of East Texas Homeplace.

She was born in Carnegie, Okla. She was a longtime resident of Bryan. She was a member of Reliance Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Riley.

Survivors include one daughter, Louise Adkins of Madisonville; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.

Rosa Lee Roehling Belcher
Jan. 23, 1928 — June 6, 2000

SOMERVILLE — Services for Rosa Lee Roehling Belcher, 72, of Somerville are set for 10 a.m. Thursday at Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville.

The Rev. Virgil Pecht will officiate. Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery in Somerville.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., and Thursdsay from 8:30 a.m. until service time.

Mrs. Belcher died Tuesday in Somerville.

She was born in Burton, Texas. She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Somerville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy E. “Buddy” Belcher.

Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Ernastine Harris of Somerville and Rosa Faye and James Lowe of Cleveland, Texas; three sisters, Eleanora Riley of Somerville, Irene Steinbach of Somerville and Bernice Raines of Somerville; one brother, Marvin Lee Roehling of Houston; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to charities of choice.

Lula Mae Becker
Oct. 18, 1907 — June 6, 2000

Services for Lula Mae Becker, 92, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

The Rev. Doug Dickey will officiate. Burial will be in Restever Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 8 a.m. to service time.

Mrs. Becker died Tuesday at Sherwood Health Care facility in Bryan.

She was born in Montgomery County, Texas. She was a homemaker and a member of Northview Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert and Dorothy Becker of College Station, L.H. “Jody” and Jenny Becker of Bryan and Kenneth Becker of Franklin; two daughters and one son-in-law, Betty and Joe Lampo of Bryan and Noma Lee Slott of New Waverly, Texas; one brother, Roland Dossey of Tyler; three sisters, Bee Adamick of Willis, Texas, Hazel Rostam of Houston and Marie Duclaus of Houston; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Barbara Jo Ealand Collins
July 25, 1934 — June 3, 2000

JASPER, Texas — Services for Barbara Jo Ealand Collins, 65, of Jasper are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Jasper.

The Rev. Jerry Neff and the Rev. Danny Barrett will officiate. Burial will be in Gause Cemetery in Gause, Texas.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home in Jasper.

Mrs. Collins died Saturday in Jasper.

She was born in Gause. She was a legal secretary.

Survivors include two sons, Arthur Clay Collins of Dallas and Nuel J. Collins of Jasper; one daughter, Leo Lynette Anderson of Lufkin, Texas; and two grandchildren.

Michael Brandon Chapman
July 10, 1983 — June 5, 2000

ROCKDALE — Services for Michael Brandon Chapman, 16, of Milano, Texas, are set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Milano High School football field.

The Rev. Jimmy Sanders of Gause Baptist Church and the Rev. Joe Dan Franklin of College Station will officiate. Burial will be in Milano Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 3 to 9 p.m. at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

Michael died Monday in Seton Highland Lakes Hospital in Burnet, Texas.

He was born in Webster, Texas. He was a student at Milano High School. He played football, tennis, track and baseball.

Survivors include his parents, Ricky and Annette Chapman of Milano; grandparents, Jean Chapman of Bremond and Jessie and Max Griego of LaMarque, Texas; one sister, Courtnee Chapman of Milano; one half brother, Charles Chapman of Bremond; and two aunts and six uncles, Claude Chapman of Borger, Texas, Jerry Chapman of Borger, D.J. Chapman of Pflugerville, Texas, Clyde Chapman of Humble, Texas, Shelton Chapman of Bremond, Lynn Hagans of Las Vegas, Renee Kriesle of Lindsay, Calif., and Michael Hagans of San Joaquin, Calif.

Ruddie Petty

Dec. 12, 1944 — June 2, 2000

HOUSTON — Services for Ruddie Petty, 55, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Friday at the Holman Street Baptist Church in Houston.

Burial will be in the V.A. Cemetery in Houston. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. at the Shrine of Black Madonna Pan African Orthodox Baptist Church in Houston.

Arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Harrison Funeral Home in Houston.

Doug Martin
Jan. 25, 1918 — June 5, 2000

CUMBY, Texas — Services for Doug Martin, 82, of Campbell, Texas, were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Prairie Valley Baptist Church near Lone Oak, Texas.

Burial was in Prairie Valley Cemetery.

Mr. Martin died Monday in Methodist Hospital in Dallas.

He was born in Gilmer, Texas. He attended Texas A&M University. He was a retired quality control engineer, and he served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of Prairie Valley Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Charles Douglas Martin Jr. of Campbell; two daughters, Martha Lou Dalton of Bedford, Texas, and Margaret Sue Crouthamel of Boerne, Texas; one brother, Dial Franklin Martin of Bryan; five sisters, Louella Hughleen Rainbolt of Gilmer, Geneeva Laird of Tyler, Alice Ruth Murphy of Garland, Texas, Sara Lou Barnes of Mesquite, Texas, and Billie Hill of Plano, Texas; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were under the direction of Cumby Funeral Home in Cumby, Texas.

Margaret L. Byrd
June 11, 1911 — June 5, 2000

TEMPLE, Texas — Services for Margaret L. Byrd, 88, of Temple are set for 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple.

The Rev. Ardene Wuthrich will officiate. Burial will be in Elgin Cemetery.

Mrs. Byrd died Monday in a nursing center in Cameron.

She was born in Pfluggerville, Texas. She was a graduate of Brackenridge Hospital School of Nursing in Austin. She was a registered nurse. She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Temple.

She was preceded in death by her husband, S.T. “Sonny” Byrd.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty Nichols of Carrollton, Texas, and Sharon Harp of Gause, Texas; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church of Temple.

Lonnie Charles Jackson
Dec. 25, 1917 — June 2, 2000

Services for Lonnie Charles Jackson, 82, of Bryan are set for 1 p.m. Friday at Bethel Baptist Church in Calvert.

The Rev. Broderick E. Ross Sr. of James Missionary Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Calvert.

Visitation will be Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Jones-Washington Mortuary in Bryan.

Mr. Jackson died Friday in Bryan.

He was born in Calvert and lived in Bryan for 11 years. He was a retired carpenter and a member of St. James Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Serphine Jackson of Bryan; three sons, Lonnie Charles Jackson Jr., Jessie Lee Jackson Allen and Bill George Jackson, all of Houston; four daughters, Willie Jean Sparks of Bryan, Charles Ann Fuller of Bryan, Ada Boxley of Houston and Edna Francis Shanks of Fort Worth; 21 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
