Leon A. Jones
July 8, 1916 Ñ June 21, 2000

On Wednesday, June 21, 2000, a man beloved by all who were fortunate enough to know him, departed our world to join the Lord in Heaven as one of his very special angels.

Among his extensive family of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and most especially to his dear wife, Lucille, he was an angel to all. Selfless, thoughtful, loving, devoted, helpful and sweet are just a few words that describe a man as genuine as he.
Leon was born on July 8, 1916, in Franklin, Texas, to his loving parents, George and Ruby Jones. He was the oldest of five children. Leon spent his childhood in and around Franklin and Wheelock, growing up on a farm.

In 1936, while serving in the United States Army Infantry in San Antonio, Leon began corresponding with a young lady who was the sister of an Army buddy. After exchanging letters for six months, the two finally met. On November 12, 1938, Leon Jones and Lucille Thomas were united in holy wedlock. As a result of this union, three daughters were born: Iva, Geraldine and Shirley.

After his discharge from the Army in 1940, Leon went to work at Alamo Ironworks in Houston until the beginning of World War II. At that time he became employed by Brown’s Shipyard, where he worked until the shipyard was closed due to the end of the war.

It was 1946 when Leon became the second person to be employed by Mr. Bud Adams, whose company eventually evolved into Adams Resources. In October of 1950, Leon moved his family to Bryan from Houston to open the branch office here. After providing 35 years of dedicated service as an Operations Manager and Sales Representative, Leon closed the Bryan branch office that he had originally opened and retired on August 1, 1981. After his discharge from the U.S. Army, Leon had never been without a job.

On the first day of his retirement, Leon and Lucille crossed over the Arctic Circle in an airplane to visit the Sohio BP side of the Prudhoe Bay oilfield as a guest of his granddaughter, who was employed there. Also included in their trip to Alaska was halibut and salmon fishing and lots of sightseeing.

During the time he was retired, Leon continued his long-standing friendships and was always developing new ones. Leon and one of his oldest and dearest friends, Earl “Bama” Smith, were members of the famous Kroger Koffee Klub, where they enjoyed many hours of each other’s company over a hot cup of java. Other activities that kept Leon busy were “piddling” in his workshop, gardening and traveling to visit family members.

Throughout his life, Leon has positively influenced many people and created fond memories in all the lives he touched. He was looked upon as a father figure by many and is highly respected in our community. His wife and family have been truly blessed by his kindness and gentle nature. He will be missed by all who knew him.
