Oct. 16, 1928 — July 7, 2000

LUFKIN, Texas — Services for Ola B. Lacey Samsky, 71, of College Station are set for 10 a.m. Monday at Gipson-Metcalf Funeral Home Chapel in Lufkin.

The Rev. G.W. Hullett and Dan Tucker will officiate. Burial will be in Hebron Cemetery in San Augustine County, Texas.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Samsky died Friday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

She was born in San Augustine County and had lived in College Station for 11 years. She was retired from the Frozen Food Express Trucking Company and was a Baptist.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Glenda and Dan Tucker of College Station and Cindy Browning of Bryan; two sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy and Donna Turner of Cleburne, Texas, and Michael and Kathy Turner of Abilene, Texas; two sisters, Mary Helen Brown of Bedford, Texas, and Lucille Beard of Seagoville, Texas; three brothers, the Rev. C.P. Lacey of Cumby, Texas, Odis Lacey of Cleveland, Texas, and Odell Lacey of Southlake, Texas; four step-children; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Jessie Mae Craig Chappell

Feb. 25, 1903 — July 8, 2000

NAVASOTA — Graveside services for Jessie Mae Craig Chappell, 97, of Navasota are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Oakland Cemetery in Navasota.

The Rev. Thomas Estes of Covenant Presbyterian Church in College Station will officiate.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday at Nobles Funeral Chapel in Navasota.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Navasota.

Mrs. Chappell died Saturday in Navasota.

She was a lifelong resident of Navasota and was retired after 18 years of teaching. She graduated from Sam Houston State University and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Genealogical Society. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Forest Chappell.

Survivors include a niece, Martha Anne Francis and her husband, J. Sage Burrows; a nephew, Sidney Joseph Francis II and his wife, Janet Wheat Francis; and numerous step-nieces, step-nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1269, Navasota, Texas.

Darrell Dewayne Betties
March 26, 1966 — July 5, 2000

Services for Darrell Dewayne Betties, 34, of Bryan are set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at G.W. Williams Tabernacle in Bryan.

The Rev. D.N. Jones of the Greater Tabernacle Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, 8 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Daniel & Son Funeral Home in Bryan and from noon to the time of the services Wednesday at the church.

Mr. Betties died Wednesday in Bryan.

He was born in Houston and lived in Bryan for 13 years. He was employed as a sanitation worker by Texas Commercial Waste in Bryan and was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Lannie Betties of Bryan; a son, Sheldon Bell of Bryan; four brothers and two sisters-in-law, Arthur Gray Jr. and Thelma Betties of Bryan, Jerome and Mattie Betties of South Carolina, Jermiah Betties and Kenneth Murphy, both of Houston; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Tara Lynn Betties-Robinson and Durron Robinson and Sandra Murphy, all of Houston; his father, Arthur Gray Betties Sr. of Houston; grandparents, Edna Jarvis of Houston and Lannie Johnson of Bryan; his mother-in-law, Sherry Bell-Smith of Bryan; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Joyce Powell Jones
June 16, 1904 — July 10, 2000

CENTERVILLE — Services for Joyce Powell Jones, 96, of Centerville are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Walters Funeral Home Chapel in Centerville.

The Rev. Charles M. White of the First United Methodist Church in Centerville will officiate. Burial will be in the Centerville Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mrs. Jones died Monday in Riverwood Health Care in Madisonville.

She was a lifelong resident of Centerville and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Sam Houston State University and was retired as a teacher with Centerville I.S.D.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Jones.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Frances Marie and F.L. Thompson of Leona, Texas; a sister-in-law, Kathleen Powell of Conroe, Texas; two granddaughters; a great-grandson; and two nephews.

James E. Mays Jr.
Aug. 22, 1923 — July 10, 2000

MADISONVILLE — Graveside services for James E. Mays Jr., 76, of Madisonville are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Willowhole Cemetery in North Zulch.

Dale Evans will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Madisonville Funeral Home in Madisonville.

Mr. Mays died Monday.

He was born in Dallas and lived in Madisonville for 20 years. He attended the Naval Academy and worked as a computer analyst for Dow Chemical for 40 years. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Evans Mays of Madisonville; a brother, J.W. Mays of Rockport, Texas; two nephews; and a niece.

Charles Pledger
Oct. 27, 1953 — July 9, 2000

Services for Charles Pledger, 46, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

The Rev. Bill Magee of Northview Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Macey Cemetery in the Macey community.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 a.m. to the time of the services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Pledger died Sunday in Brazos County.

He was born in Houston and lived in Bryan since 1961. He was an electrician for College Station Electric and served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the IBEW Local Union 716 in Houston and the VFW Post 10358 in Hearne. He was a Protestant.

Survivors include a son, Lance Pledger of Bryan; two daughters, Tiffany Pledger of Denton, Texas, and Melissa Pledger of Bryan; his parents, Frances and Vernon Manning of Macey; five sisters, Kay Killion of Humble, Texas, Patricia Appling of Cleveland, Texas, Janice Faye Hill of Waco, Glenda Sue James of Hillsboro, Texas, and Penny Elaine Capps of Rosharon, Texas; a grandson; and his former wife, Cathy, of Bryan.

Austyn James Barcak
July 15, 1996 — July 10, 2000

ROCKDALE — Services for Austyn James Barcak, 3, of Rockdale are set for 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Rockdale.

The Rev. Bob Hendrick and Deacon Don Simms will officiate. Burial will be in Locklin Cemetery near Thorndale.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Austyn died Monday in Scott & White Hospital in Temple.

He was born in Austin.

Survivors include his parents, Rodney and Deedra Barcak of Rockdale; grandparents, Larry and Donna Pipkin and William and Pat Barcak, all of Rockdale, and Terry Jolley of Garland, Texas; great-grandparents, Evelyn Barcak of Hallettsville, Texas, Alfons and Leona Kainer of Early, Texas, Olice Jolley of Burleson, Texas, Lawrence and Ruby Pipkin of Smithville, Texas, Annie Nienkark of Liberty Hill, Texas, and Jerry Osborne of Pflugerville, Texas; two aunts; two uncles; and a cousin.

Memorials may be made to the Austyn Barcak Memorial Fund at the Rockdale Federal Credit Union.

Lois Burney
Jan. 6, 1919 — July 11, 2000

ROCKDALE — Services for Lois Burney, 81, of Rockdale are set for 3 p.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church in Rockdale.

The Revs. Roy Bruton and Buddy Morton will officiate. Burial will be in Black Jack Cemetery in Black Jack, Texas.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

Mrs. Burney died Tuesday in the Manor Oaks Nursing Home in Rockdale.

She was born in Black Jack and lived in Rockdale for 54 years. She was a rancher and homemaker, and was a member of the First Christian Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Burney.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Joyce Burney of Rockdale; a daughter, Beverly June Burney of Cameron; two brothers, Wayne Morton and Lloyd Morton, both of Black Jack; four sisters, Inez Burrough, Jennie Johnson and Edith Key, all of Rockdale, and Billie Baggett of Nacogdoches, Texas; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or the National Parkinson’s Foundation.

Beulah Mae Grayson Hall
April 27, 1931 — July 10, 2000

JEWETT — Services for Beulah Mae Grayson Hall, 69, of Jewett are set for 11 a.m. Thursday at Ricks Funeral Home Chapel in Jewett.

The Rev. Lee Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hall died Monday in East Texas Medical Center in Tyler.

She was born in Jewett and lived in Houston for 25 years before returning to Jewett. She was a homemaker and was a Baptist.

Survivors include two daughters, Alice Smith of Jewett and Mary Francis Hall of Houston; a sister, Francis Grayson of Bryan; a granddaughter; and three great-grandsons; and a nephew.

Donald H. Hines
Dec. 1, 1929 — July 10, 2000

NORMANGEE — Services for Donald H. Hines, 70, of Marquez, Texas, are set for 11 a.m. Thursday at Vanetia Baptist Church in Vanetia, Texas.

The Rev. Ed Ehring of Vanetia Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Vanetia Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Cozart Funeral Home in Normangee.

Mr. Hines died Monday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

He was born in Vanetia and was retired from Crown Oil. He was a Baptist and served in the U.S. Army in Korea.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Hines of Marquez; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Gwen Hines of Deer Park, Texas; a brother and sister-in-law, Elwood and Opal Hines of Houston; a sister, Myrtle Hooper of Wyoming; and two grandchildren.

Olan W. Mosley
Nov. 20, 1915 — July 11, 2000

MADISONVILLE — Services for Olan W. Mosley, 84, of North Zulch are set for 4 p.m. Thursday at the Willowhole Chapel in North Zulch.

The Revs. Johnnie L. Crocker of Sand Prairie Baptist Church and Paul Dickson of North Zulch First Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Willowhole Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at Madisonville Funeral Home in Madisonville.

Mr. Mosley died Tuesday in Bryan.

He was a lifelong resident of North Zulch and was a rancher. He was a member of the North Zulch First Baptist Church and was also a member of the North Zulch Masonic Pyramid Lodge No. 593 for over 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Mosley of North Zulch; two daughters and sons-in-law, Charlotte and Billy Wilson of Madisonville and Linda and Bob Webb of Houston; a sister, Marjorie Williams of North Zulch; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
