Dec. 15, 1934 — Sept. 11, 2000

CALDWELL — Services for Alfred Alton Lacina, 65, of Caldwell are set for 10 a.m. Thursday at Elizabeth Lutheran Church in Caldwell. The Rev. William Gaskamp will officiate. Burial will be in Caldwell Masonic Cemetery.

Mr. Lacina died Monday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.

He was born in Burleson County. He was a retired automotive mechanic and a member of Elizabeth Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Blinka Lacina of Caldwell; two sisters, Margaret Zgabay and Lois Jones, both of Caldwell; a special friend, Daniel Daugherty of Germany; and numerous nephews and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Brazos Valley Rehabilitation Center, Elizabeth Lutheran Church or to the charity of your choice.

Joe D. ‘J.D.’ Vavra
April 5, 1932 — Sept. 12, 2000

CALDWELL — Services for Joe D. “J.D.” Vavra, 68, of Caldwell are set for 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Frenstat. Burial will be at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Frenstat.

Visitation will be noon to 8 p.m. Thursday and a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday at Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Caldwell.

Mr. Vavra died Tuesday in Bryan.

He was born in Burleson County. He was a supervisor at the International Shoe Co. He was a Korean War veteran and a member of American Legion Post No. 451. He was also a member of KJT Society No. 12 and the Czech Heritage Society of Texas.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn D. Vavra of Caldwell; two sons and daughters-in-law, Craig A. and Rhonda Homeyer, and Carl W. and Sheila Homeyer, all of Caldwell; four grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lawrence and Tina Vavra of Caldwell, James and Janie Vavra of Caldwell; two sisters, Georgia and Julius Knesek and Eleanora and Milton Mynar, all of Caldwell; a mother-in-law, Lottie Drgac of Caldwell; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Memorials may be made to Holy Rosary Cemetery Fund, American Heart Association, American Diabetic Association or charity of choice.

Glen Paul Hughes
Oct. 27, 1956 — Sept. 11, 2000

LIVINGSTON, Texas — Services for Glen Paul Hughes, 43, of Livingston are set for 11 a.m. Friday at the Walters Funeral Home Chapel in Centerville. The Rev. Dwain Steinkuehler will officiate. Burial will be in the Concord Cemetery in Concord.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m Thursday and 9 a.m. to service time on Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Hughes died Monday at his home.

He was born in Houston. He was an auto mechanic. He moved to Livingston from Franklin.

Survivors include his mother, Sarah Jackson of Franklin; two brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Cindy Hughes and James and Jennifer Hughes, all of Franklin; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Daisy Louise and Jeff Keeper of Rifle, Colo., Katherine and Bobby Slay of Livingston and Elizabeth and Travis Allbright of Shepherd, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Arvid Bertram Wilkinson
Jan. 18, 1934 — Sept. 10, 2000

ROCKDALE — Graveside services for Arvid Bertram Wilkinson, 66, of Tanglewood, Texas, are set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Bear Creek Cemetery in Bertram. The Rev. Sam Wayman will officiate.

Local arrangements are under the direction of Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home of Rockdale.

Mr. Wilkinson died Sunday at his home.

He was born in Goose Creek, Texas. He had been a farmer and rancher most of his life. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957.

Survivors include his brother, Dwayne Wilkinson of Victoria, Texas, a sister, Donna Wayman of San Antonio; four nieces, one great-niece, two great-nephews, and an aunt, Grace Heartfield of Beaumont, Texas.

Edward Wayne Black
Oct. 29, 1948 -— Sept. 12, 2000

ROCKDALE — Services for Edward Wayne Black, 51, of Rockdale are set for 3 p.m. Friday at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. Burial will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery. The Rev. Larry Holden will officiate.

Mr. Black died Tuesday at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas.

He was born in Flynn, Texas. He was a Texas Department of Corrections guard. He attended the First Baptist Church in Rockdale.

Survivors include his parents, Finis E. and Lou Ann Black of Rockdale; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tonya and Scott Henry of Monticello, Utah, and Wendy Kaye and Chester Jackson of Frisco, Texas; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara Black of Auburn, Ga., and Judy and Kenneth McLerran of Fairfield, Texas; and four grandchildren.

Gracie Lee Mitchell
Jan. 16, 1931 — Sept. 13, 2000

NAVASOTA — Services for Gracie Lee Mitchell, 69, of Navasota are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Greater First Baptist Church in Anderson. The Rev. E.P. Walker will officiate. Burial will be at Berryman Cemetery in Anderson.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home in Navasota.
Mrs. Mitchell died Wednesday at College Station Medical Center.

She was born in Anderson and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Greater First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Mitchell.

Survivors include five sons and four daughters-in-law, Willie L. Henderson Jr. and Evelyn, Charles Ray Henderson, David L. and Michael W. Mitchell, all of Navasota; Ernest J. and Georgia Henderson of Anderson, Robert C. and Queen Mitchell of College Station; two daughters, Grace Wheatfall of Houston and Mildred Alexander of Dallas; four brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Betty Wyatt, Sammy and Mary Helen Wyatt, James and Madeline Wyatt, and Leslie and Eddie Wyatt; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Armanda B. Freeman, Pearl and Joseph, a stepson, J.W. Mitchell of Bryan; 34 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Landony Hightower Paul
Oct. 30, 1915 — Sept. 9, 2000

HOUSTON — Services for Landony Hightower Paul, 84, of Houston are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at St. James Baptist Church in Bryan. The Rev. Brodrick E. Ross Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and a wake service will be from 7 to 9 p.m. at Jones-Washington Mortuary.

Mrs. Paul died Saturday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.

She was born in Iola and was a homemaker. She was a member of the St. James Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Paul Sr.

Survivors include a stepson and his wife, Milton Paul Jr. and Robbie of Bryan; five sons and four daughters-in-law, A. J. and Essie Paul, T. J. and Gladys Paul, Clarence and Darlyne Paul and Earnest Paul, all of Bryan, and Freddie and Jane Paul of Plano, Texas; two daughters and sons-in-law, Faye and Odis Walton of Garland, Texas, and Helen Paul Oliver and A.D. of Houston; one brother, Fred Hightower of Houston; one sister, Beadie Turner of Houston; 17 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Locke Wood Moss
Nov. 5, 1913 — Sept. 13, 2000

FREDERICKSBURG, Texas — Graveside services for Locke Wood Moss, 86, of Fredericksburg are set for 11 a.m. Friday at Norwood Cemetery in Hearne. The Rev. Brooks Taylor of Leona-Evans Chapel United Methodist Church will officiate.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Heartfield Funeral Home in Hearne.
Mrs. Moss died Thursday in Fredericksburg.

She was born in Robertson County. She was a homemaker. She graduated from Hearne High School and attended Texas Woman’s University. She was a member of St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Kristen Moss of Fredericksburg; three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Willie Watkins
April 19, 1951 -— Sept. 7,2000

HEMPSTEAD, Texas — Services for Willie Watkins, 49, of Hempstead are set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Mercy Seat Baptist Church in Washington. The Rev. Maceo Dillard will officiate. Burial will be at Salem Cemetery in Navasota.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home in Navasota.
Mr. Watkins died Sept. 7 at Tomball Hospital.

He was born in Washington, Texas. He was employed at a paint and body shop.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Watkins of Hempstead; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Leroy and Margaret Walker of Houston, and Lionel Walker of Hempstead; five sisters and one brother-in-law, Rosa Lott, Mildred and Kenroy Thompson, Gwenlyn Walker, all of Hempstead, Ella Ward of Waller, Texas, and Alice De Cuir of Hockley, Texas.

Eva T. Toliver
Aug. 11, 1920 — Sept. 8, 2000

RICHARDS — Services for Eva T. Toliver, 80, of Richards are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Richards. The Rev. Raymond Davis will officiate. Burial will be at Long Street Cemetery in Richards.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday at Jones Funeral Home in Navasota.
Mrs. Toliver died Friday at her home.

She was born in Rosebud, Texas. She was a homemaker and a member of Christian Home Workers. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Richards.

Survivors include four sons, Freddie Toliver of Houston, H.C. Shields of Los Angeles, John Toliver of Houston, and Clarence Toliver of Missouri City, Texas; three daughters, Myra Creeks of Bowie, Md., Sylvia Truman of Navasota, and Eunice Devine of Houston; a goddaughter, Brenda Stribbling; a godson, Johnny Stribbling; one sister, Phebie Ellis of Garland, Texas; 29 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

James F. Brenton
Oct. 31, 1911 — Sept. 15, 2000

BRENHAM — Graveside services for James F. Brenton, 88, of Brenham are set for mid-October in Rifle, Colo.

Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham.
Mr. Brenton died Friday in Trinity Care Center in Brenham.

He was born in Rifle, Colo., and was employed by Union Carbide in Western Colorado and California. He received a full four-year Bonfils Scholarship and graduated in 1933 from the University of Denver with a chemical engineering degree.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Joann and Joseph Harbison of Brenham; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Jackson and Bobbie Wade Brenton of Gaeta, Italy; a sister-in-law, Helen Brenton of Wheatridge, Colo.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Annie Mae Ubernosky Brinkmann
Dec. 8, 1942 — Sept. 14, 2000

CALDWELL — Services for Annie Mae Ubernosky Brinkmann, 57, of Deanville are set for 3 p.m. Sunday at the Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Caldwell.

The Rev. Grant Housewright of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Deanville will officiate.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to the time of the services Sunday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Brinkmann died Thursday at her home.

She was born in Burleson County and was a homemaker. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband, William Fred Brinkmann of Deanville; a son and daughter-in-law, Curtis Allen and Sherri Brinkmann of Montgomery, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Ann and Jason Williford of Deanville; two brothers, Allan Ray Ubernosky of Lumberton, Texas, and Clarence George Ubernosky Jr. of Houston; three sisters, Carylon Ethel Zboril of Deanville, Brenda Ann Brimberry of Dobbin, Texas, and Blanda Sue Pennington of Caldwell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

James William ‘Bill’ Clepper
Sept. 3, 1912 — Sept. 14, 2000

NAVASOTA — Services for James William “Bill” Clepper, 88, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Monday at Nobles Funeral Chapel in Navasota.

The Rev. Carroll Pickett of Shiro Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be in Apolonia Cemetery near Anderson under the auspices of the Orphan’s Friend Lodge No. 17 AF&AM.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mr. Clepper died Thursday in Bryan.

He was born in Anderson and was retired as manager of Butex LP Gas Co. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 984 AF&AM, the Orphan’s Friend Lodge No. 17 AF&AM in Anderson, the Scottish Rite in San Antonio and the Sam Houston Hall of Fame in Waco. He was a Methodist.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Carol Clepper of Cypress, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Joe Duncan of Dallas; a son-in-law, Doug Odom of Seguin, Texas; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two nieces; and numerous other relatives.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley, St. Joseph Cancer Center or Shiro Presbyterian Church.
