Franklin Durwood Ballard
Oct. 19, 1918 — Sept. 17, 2000

HOUSTON — Services for Franklin Durwood Ballard, 81, of Houston are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Earthman North Chapel in Houston.

Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Baptist Cemetery in Bedias.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Ballard died Sunday.

He was born in Bedias and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Marie Ballard.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Franklin Dewain and Carol Ballard; two daughters, Lois Lanette Faler and Loretta Hall; three brothers, Lloyd L. Ballard, G.W. Ballard and Joseph Ples Ballard; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Luther Sidney Fannin
Jan. 3, 1909 — Sept. 17, 2000

MADISONVILLE — Services for Luther Sidney Fannin, 91, of Madisonville are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Madisonville.

The Rev. Dick White will officiate. Burial will be in the Madisonville City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Madisonville Funeral Home.

Mr. Fannin died Sunday.

He was born in the High Prairie community and was a lifelong resident of Madison County. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Madisonville and the Madisonville Masonic Lodge No. 740. He worked as a barber for 55 years and was also a rancher.

Survivors include his wife, Freddie Fannin of Madisonville; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Walter Clopton of Madisonville; a sister-in-law, Blanche Fannin of Madisonville; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four nephews; and a niece.

Richard Franklin Holland
March 4, 1928 — Sept. 16, 2000

ATHENS, Texas — Services for Richard Franklin Holland, 72, of College Station are set for 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Athens.

The Revs. Jerry House and Lynn Parker will officiate. Burial will be in the Athens City Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home in Athens.

Mr. Holland died Saturday at his home.

He was born in Henderson County, Texas, and graduated from Texas A&M University with a bachelor’s degree in agronomy in 1950 and a master’s degree in genetics in 1954. He served two years in the U.S. Navy and began his research career at the Texas Agriculture Experiment Station in Chillicothe, Texas.

In 1954 he joined DeKalb AgResearch Company and held positions of research agronomist, research director and vice president of agronomic research until 1979. From 1979 to his retirement in 1992 he was associated with DeKalb-Pfizer Genetics, Funk Seeds International and continued hybrid cotton research until his death.

He was involved with the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Agricultural Research Institute, the National Council for Commercial Plant Breeders, Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy, World Food Supply, Science Advisory Committee and the American Society of Agronomy. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in College Station.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie J. Abernathy Holland of College Station; two sons and daughters-in-law, Alan and Danna Holland of Houston and Richard and Kathleen Holland of Benton, La.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Laura and Craig Smith of Indianapolis, Karen and Keith Hatfield of Plano, Texas, and Nancy and Trey Smith of Topeka, Kan.; three brothers, Judge Jack Holland and Jerry Holland, both of Athens, and Ben Holland of Bowie, Texas; two sisters, Emma Jo Crout of El Paso, and Mary Ruth Pence of Tyler, Texas; and 12 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the R.F. Holland Endowment Scholarship at Texas A&M University, Soil & Crop Sciences, College Station, Texas 77843-2474.

Ola Belle Burt
Jan. 2, 1924 — Sept. 15, 2000

Memorial services for Ola Belle Burt, 76, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.

The Rev. Tim Skaggs of Central Baptist Church will officiate. There will be a private family inurnment.

Mrs. Burt died Friday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

She was a lifelong resident of Bryan and was a homemaker. She served in the U.S. Navy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norris Burt.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, John and Betty Winter of Georgetown, Texas; a daughter, Connie Hickman of Spring, Texas; and two grandchildren.

Jeanne Louise Downey
Aug. 8, 1923 — Sept. 17, 2000

Graveside services for Jeanne Louise Downey, 77, of Bryan are set for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Restever Memorial Park in Bryan.

The Rev. Bruce Woods of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in College Station will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.

Mrs. Downey died Sunday in St. Joseph Manor in Bryan.

She was born in Plymouth, Ind., and had lived in Bryan since 1964. She was the private secretary to the vice president of the Studebaker Manufacturing Company. She was a homemaker and was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. She volunteered with the Muscular Dystrophy Association and was a member of the Ladies Local Bowling League in Bryan.

Survivors include her husband, D.A. “Sam” Downey of Bryan; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Laura Downey of Austin; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Ernie Goode and Samantha and Robert Mumford, all of Bryan; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Still Creek Boys and Girls Ranch, 6055 Hearne Road, Bryan, Texas 77808.

William Alexander Smith
April 24, 1926 — Sept. 17, 2000

Memorial services for William Alexander Smith, 74, of College Station are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Chinese Church in College Station.

Pastor Seo of the Chinese Church will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

Mr. Smith died Sunday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

He was born in Duluth, Minn., and had lived in College Station for 45 years. He was an extension forester for the state of Texas and served in the U.S. Navy in the Seabees during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 159 and VFW Post in Bryan and was a member of the Chinese Church. He served as a city councilman in College Station, served on the Planning and Zoning Commission for College Station and the Condemnation Board for Brazos County. He also served as a cub master for the American Boy Scouts.

Survivors include his wife, Violet Tan Smith of College Station; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Jane Smith of Bryan, Bob and Kim Smith of Tabor and Harvey and Andrea Tan of Seattle; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kristi and Dietrick Bengs of Bryan and Carol and Tony Esse of Reston, Va.; two sisters, Betty White of Chicago and Harriet Kelly of San Diego; 15 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the Chinese Church, 708 Eisenhower, College Station, Texas 77840.

Margaret Ophelia Stone Barnes
Aug. 25, 1924 — Sept. 17, 2000

MADISONVILLE — Services for Margaret Ophelia Stone Barnes, 76, of Madisonville are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Madisonville.

Pres. Mark Young will officiate. Burial will be in the Jozye Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Madisonville Funeral Home.

Mrs. Barnes died Sunday.

She was born in the Jozye community in Madison County and had lived in Madisonville since 1978. She formerly lived in Houston for 37 years. She worked as an LVN for the Madisonville Nursing Home for 12 years.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Albert Jez and Willie E. “Bill” Barnes; a son, Gerald Barnes; and a daughter, Alberta Wren.

Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Billie and Linnie Stone of Madisonville; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mildred Stephens of Conroe, Texas, and Joan and John Stewart of College Station; three grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

Leola ‘Aunt Duck’ McNeary
May 25, 1912 — Sept. 15, 2000

Services for Leola “Aunt Duck” McNeary, 88, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday in Ruby’s Chapel of Jones-Washington Mortuary in Bryan.

The Rev. Ray Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery in Wellborn.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. McNeary died Friday in Sherwood Health Care, Inc.

She was born in Washington County and had lived in Bryan for 36 years. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Marilyn Rodell
Aug. 31, 1960 — Sept. 17, 2000

CENTERVILLE — Services for Marilyn Rodell, 40, of Centerville are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Centerville.

The Revs. Larry Ashley and Gil Lain will officiate. Burial will be in the Centerville Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., and from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the Walters Funeral Home in Centerville.

Ms. Rodell died Sunday.

She was born in Fairfield, Texas, and was a 1978 graduate of Centerville High School. She worked for Texas A&M University, the Brazos County Appraisal office, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in Huntsville, Texas, and was a secretary to the chief of police in Huntsville. For the last seven years she worked with the Department of Public Safety in Pasadena, Texas, in the driver’s license division as a technician. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Centerville.

Survivors include her parents, Teddy Ray and Anna Jane Rodell of Centerville; a grandmother, Willie Mae Payne of Centerville; a daughter, Jessica Liane Bruno of Centerville; a brother and sister-in-law, Tommy and Marie Rodell of Centerville; a sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Trey Kirkpatrick of Bryan; four nieces; a nephew; and a great-niece.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund at the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 609, Centerville, Texas 75833.

Cora Alice Streater
Feb. 4, 1910 — Sept. 18, 2000

FRANKLIN — Services for Cora Alice Streater, 90, of the Vanetia community in Leon County are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Vanetia Missionary Baptist Church.

Ed Ehring and Darren Boyd will officiate. Burial will be in the Vanetia Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the McCauley Funeral Home in Franklin.

Mrs. Streater died Monday in Bryan.

She was born in Marquez and had been a lifelong resident of the Vanetia community. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Vanetia Missionary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Weldon B. Streater.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Brenda Streater of Vanetia; a sister, Fannie Flynt of Huntsville, Texas; three sisters-in-law, Merle Higginbotham of Monahans, Texas, Belva Higginbotham Rollo of Huntsville and Nell Watson of Vanetia; a granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mollie B. Menton
Sept. 20, 1906 — Sept. 13, 2000

ROCKDALE — Services for Mollie B. Menton, 93, of Rockdale are set for 11 am. Wednesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. The Rev. R.O. Watters, Sr. will officiate. Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home in Caldwell.
Mrs. Menton died Wednesday at Bryton Inn Health Center in Bryan.

She was a housewife.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Field Menton.

Survivors include two brothers, Ivison Brown of Lubbock and Sam Brown of Grand Prairie, Texas.
