SAN SABA, Texas — Services for Lorenzo Z. Ramirez, 63, of San Saba, formerly of Bryan, were Friday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. The Rev. John McCaffrey of St. Joseph Catholic Church officiated. Burial was in the Bryan City Cemetery.

Mr. Ramirez died Tuesday in Caldwell.

He was born in Refugio, Arolla Seco, Quet., Mexico. He was a construction worker.

Survivors include his sons and daughter-in-law, Lorenzo and Petra Perez of Dallas, Salomon Ramirez of Rio Verde, SLP, Mexico; his mother, Angelina Zarate of Celaya, GTO, Mexico; two brothers, Lorenzo Sanchez of Tampico, Mexico, and Emilio Sanchez of Garland, Texas; his sister, Natalia Sanchez of Celaya, GTO Mexico; and five grandchildren.

Catherine Jewel Mayo Vaughn
Nov. 23, 1919 - Dec. 23, 2000

BLACK JACK — Services for Catherine Jewel Mayo Vaughn, 81, of Black Jack are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethany Baptist Church near Hearne in Robertson County.

The Rev. Eldon Alfred of Bethany Baptist Church will officiate. He will be assisted by the Rev. Eddie Mayo of Elliott Baptist Church. Burial will be at Suggs Cemetery near Hearne in Robertson County.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday at Heartfield Funeral Home in Hearne.

Mrs. Vaughn died Saturday morning at her home.

She was born in Hearne and had lived in Black Jack all of her life. She was a retired cook for the Hearne school district and was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee W. Vaughn, and a daughter, Pat Sapp.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Lee W. and Patsy Vaughn Jr. and Ronnie L. and Diana Vaughn, both of Black Jack; one daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Ronnie Rowan of Black Jack; one son-in-law, Ernest Sapp of Maysfield, Texas; two brothers, Eddie Mayo of Elliott, Texas, and Steve K. Mayo of Porter, Texas; three sisters, Mary Newton of Spring, Texas, Marie Moran of Springtown, Texas, and Shirley Nelson of Round Rock, Texas; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Charles Cowan Harter Sr.
Oct. 13, 1916 - Dec. 22, 2000

A private memorial service for Charles Cowan Harter Sr., 84, of Bryan is set for 2 p.m. Thursday.

The Rev. John McCaffrey of St. Joseph Catholic Church will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

Mr. Harter died Friday morning at his home.

He was born in Canyon, Texas, and lived in Fort Worth for 52 years before moving to Brazos County, where he lived for 6 years. He was retired after having been a teacher, principal and school administrator for 33 years.

He was a member of University Baptist Church in Fort Worth and served in the United States Army during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Harter of Bryan; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Nancy Harter Jr. of Bryan; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kaye and Paul Lord of Arlington, Texas, and Lynne and Jack Garner of Aledo, Texas; one brother, William Cass Harter of Amarillo; one sister, Dorothea Prichard of Fort Worth; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

J.D. Gaas
June 12, 1934 — Dec. 22, 2000

BRAZORIA, Texas —Services for J.D. Gaas are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Baker Funeral Home Chapel.

Deacon Jimmy Smith will officiate. Burial will follow at Brazoria Cemetery.

Mr. Gaas died Friday at his home in Brazoria. He was 66.

He was born in Lyons, outside of Caldwell, and moved to Brazoria in 1957. He was a drywall contractor who also played the fiddle and other instruments and was a member of several bands.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Gaas of Brazoria; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Marlin and Madelene Jones of Brazoria; two stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Kemp Wall of Jones Creek, Texas, and Carol and Tommy Breazeale of Brazoria; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Matilda and Ben Kocurek of Caldwell, Josephine Benn of Brazoria and Ann Sherlock of Colorado; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Milton and Rita Gaas of Bryan, Tony and Helen Gaas of Buckholts and Richard and Erma Gaas of Bryan; brother-in law Ivo Junek; sister-in-law Libby Gaas; mother-in-law Beatrice Turk; five grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family requests donations be made in Mr. Gaas’s name to the Hospice Care Team, Brazoria Lion’s Club, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Joe A. Kucera
Aug. 6, 1931 — Dec. 22, 2000

Funeral Mass services for Joe A. Kucera, 69, of Snook will be noon. Sunday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard, Texas.

Father Don Ruppert will officiate. Rosary services will precede the Mass at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow the services in Evergreen Memorial Park in Wharton, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Kucera died Friday.

Mr. Kucera was a 40-year resident of Snook. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and worked as a heavy-equipment operator in Burleson County for more than 20 years until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Bryan.

Survivors include his wife, Sidonia Kucera of Snook; two daughters and a son-in-law, Suzanne and Cecil Drake of Snook and Vicki Urbanosky of Snook; five sisters, Gladys Fucik and Georgie Kaspar of El Campo, Texas, and Helen Konvicka, Frances Wesels and Mildred Stavinoha, all of Wharton; four brothers, Bill Kucera of Bryan, Herman and Herbert Kucera of Wharton and Tony Kucera of Van Vleck, Texas; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Kucera.

Memorials may be made to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Bryan or Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard.

Susie Agnes Vassar
Feb. 14, 1911 — Dec. 23, 2000

JEWETT — Services for Susie Agnes Vassar, 89, of Jewett are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ricks Funeral Home in Jewett.

Burial will be in Little Flock Cemetery on F.M. 1512.

Mrs. Vassar died Saturday in Parkview Regional Hospital in Mexia, Texas.

She was born in Hubbard, Texas, and lived in Houston for 20 years before returning to Jewett. She was a homemaker and quiltmaker. She was a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Vassar; two daughters, Reda Conklin and Jean Conklin; and two sons, Howard Vassar and Ray Vassar.

Survivors include two sons, J.D. Vassar of Jewett and James Vassar of Henderson, Texas; 21 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Winnie Davis Brown
May 27, 1908 — Dec. 24, 2000

MADISONVILLE — Services for Winnie Davis Brown, 92, of Madisonville are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Centerville.

The Rev. E.B. Beasley of the First United Methodist Church in Carthage, Texas, will officiate. Burial will be in the Centerville Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Madisonville Funeral Home in Madisonville and from 10 a.m. to the time of the services Tuesday at the church.

Mrs. Brown died Sunday in Madison St. Joseph Health Center.

She was born in Centerville and had lived in Madisonville since 1990. She retired in 1970 after teaching for 33 years and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Centerville. She was a past Matron of the Centerville Chapter No. 1002 Order of the Eastern Star and received the Outstanding Older Texan Award in 1987.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Nell Brown and Jack Hunter of Madisonville; two sisters, Mattie Jo Neyland and Margie Brown, both of Centerville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Carl Luther McAdams
Dec. 7, 1910 — Dec. 23, 2000

MADISONVILLE — Services for Carl Luther McAdams, 90, of Madisonville are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the McAdams Chapel in Walker County.

Dr. J.W.L. Adams will officiate. Burial will be in the McAdams Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the Madisonville Funeral Home.

Mr. McAdams died Saturday in Madison St. Joseph Health Center.

He was born in Shiro and was a lifelong resident of the Madisonville area. He was a warden for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He was a member of the Madisonville Masonic Lodge and the Sons of the American Revolution, was a past president of the Farm Bureau, was a Shriner and served on the board of the Madison County Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Fannie Irene McAdams.

Survivors include two daughters, Donnie McAdams Moore and Ann McAdams Colwell, both of Madisonville; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

Bernice Roehling Raines
Aug. 5, 1930 — Dec. 24, 2000

SOMERVILLE — Services for Bernice Roehling Raines, 70, of Somerville are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Somerville.

The Rev. Virgil Pecht will officiate. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 a.m. to the time of the services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Raines died Sunday in Trinity Medical Center in Brenham.

She was born in the Longpoint community of Washington County and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Charles E. Raines of Somerville; a daughter, Mary Jackson of Somerville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Ralph and Jeanette Raines of Plantersville and James Edward and Andrea Raines of Brenham; two sisters, Eleanor Riley of the Birch community and Irene Steinbach of Somerville; a brother and sister-in-law, Marvin Lee and Leona Roehling of Houston; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church of Somerville.

Wayne Beavers
Oct. 9, 1947 — Dec. 22, 2000

HUMBLE, Texas — Memorial services for Wayne Beavers, 53, of Huffman, Texas, are set for 1 p.m. Friday in Callaway-Allee Funeral Home Chapel in Crockett, Texas.

Arrangements are under the direction of Rosewood Funeral Home in Humble.

Mr. Beavers died Friday.

He was born in Houston.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Chambers Beavers of Huffman; a son, Tony Beavers of College Station; two daughters and a son-in-law, Shelley Beavers of Houston and Laurie and Mark Moreno of Webster, Texas; his mother, Marie Beavers of Crockett; two brothers, Jerry Beavers and Larry Beavers, both of Crockett; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and other relatives.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Texas Liver Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital.

Willie Davis
Jan. 23, 1923 — Dec. 24, 2000

Services for Willie Davis, 77, of Caldwell are set for 2 p.m. Thursday in Ruby’s Chapel of Jones-Washington Mortuary in Bryan.

The Rev. Travis McConley of John the Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Oldham Cemetery in Oldham Settlement.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Davis died Sunday in Southwood Nursing Home.

She was born in Burleson County and was a lifelong resident of Caldwell. She was retired and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sisters, Martha Aldridge and Orilla Jones, both of Caldwell, and Bertha B. Jones of Lubbock.
