Jack Lundeen Jones
June 23, 1920 — Dec. 29, 2000

On December 29, 2000, Jack Lundeen Jones, age 80, of Bryan passed away in Rockdale, Texas. Mr. Jones was born in Kerrville, Texas, and was a resident of Bryan for 32 years. Mr. Jones graduated from the Texas A&M University, class of 1942, with a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning. He retired from the Texas Agriculture Extension Service as a Resource Development Specialist.

He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Bryan, an usher and a member of the Men’s Bible class as well as a substitute teacher for the Neighborly class, past staff sports photographer for the Batallion, past Secretary and Treasurer of the Beautify Texas Council, Sons of the American Revolution, N.A.R.F.E., and a member of the Taft American Legion and was the first President and charter member of the Kiwanas Club, Taft, Texas.

Mr. Jones was a Major in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII, a member of Eisenhower’s staff and a recipient of the Bronze star for LeBourget Air Drome evacuating many wounded.

Mr. Jones is preceded in death by his parents, WDC & Edna Jones; and a brother, Claiborne Jones.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Jones of Bryan; son and daughter-in-law, David and Monica Jones of Houston; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Richard Clark of Cincinnati; a brother-in-law, Joe and Jan Hague of Tyler; two grandsons, Bryan Kyle Clark of Cincinnati, and Jordan Barrett Jones of Houston; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hillier Funeral Home and Funeral Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday in the First United Methodist Church of Bryan with Reverends Bob Richers and Harral Dunnam officiating. Interment will follow in the Bryan City Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Bryan or to the American Alzheimer’s Association.

Norma Louise Lacina
Nov. 15, 1920 — Dec. 31, 2000

Norma Louise Lacina passed away December 31, 2000, at home in Brenham. Born November 15, 1920, to August William and Norma Hartstack Hodde, she was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Brenham. She married L.J. Lacina on June 29, 1947, and became a parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in 1962 and confirmed in the Catholic faith in 1966.

She graduated from Brenham High School and Blinn College, and attended the University of Texas. She taught at Prairie Hill and Chappell Hill schools.

She is survived by her husband, L.J. Lacina; sister, Alma Eve Hodde; brother, A.W. Hodde Jr.; children, L.J. (Johnny) Lacina Jr., Carey Lacina, Dr. Lorna Lacina-Gifford and Russell Gifford, Tim Lacina and Michele Lacina; grandchildren, Rachael Lacina, Jonas Lacina, James Gifford, Lauren Gifford and Mark Ellis.

She was a member of the Fortnightly Club and a strong supporter of the Brenham Public Library, an avid bridge player, and Chairperson of the Clerical Endowment Fund of the Austin Diocese for St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Memorials may be given to the St. Mary’s Catholic Church building fund, the L.J. and Norma Lacina Family Endowed Scholarship at Blinn College or the A.W. Hodde Endowed Scholarship at Texas Lutheran University.

Funeral Mass will be offered Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001 at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Brenham.

Visitation will be Monday, Jan. 1, 2001 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Brenham Memorial Chapel.

DeMarkis DreShawn Johnson
Dec. 27, 2000 — Dec. 27, 2000

Graveside services for infant DeMarkis DreShawn Johnson are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Babyland section of Oakwood Cemetery in Bryan.

Arrangements are under the direction of Daniel & Son Funeral Home in Bryan.
DeMarkis died Wednesday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

Survivors include his parents, LaShawn Denise Jackson and Robert Charles Johnson, both of Bryan; and his grandparents, Woodrow W. Jackson and Gracie Johnson, both of Bryan.

Ducie Owens
Feb. 11, 1909 — Dec. 27, 2000

Services for Ducie Owens, 91, of Bryan are set for 1 p.m. Tuesday at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Bryan.

The Rev. John Foster of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and from 8 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Daniel & Son Funeral Home in Bryan and from 11 a.m. to the time of the services Tuesday at the church.

Mr. Owens died Wednesday in St. Joseph Rehabilitation Center.

He was born in Gause and was a lifelong resident of Bryan. He was a retired maintenance man for St. Joseph. He was a member of Galilee Baptist Church, where he taught the men’s Bible School, was in BYPU and was an usher. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Owens, and a son, Ennis Owens.
Survivors include two sons, Lee A. Owens and Roosevelt Owens, both of Bryan; two daughters, Willie B. Shaw of San Antonio and Earnesell Walter of Lytle, Texas; a sister, Cowetta Owens of Houston; 20 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Galilee Missionary Baptist Church.

Dorothy Mae Smith
Oct. 27, 1917 — Dec. 30, 2000

FRANKLIN — Services for Dorothy Mae Smith, 83, of Franklin are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the McCauley Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin.

Burial will be in Henry Prairie Cemetery in Robertson County.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to the time of the services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ms. Smith died Saturday in Franklin.

She was born in Robertson County and was a lifelong resident of Franklin. She was a member of the Henry Prairie Baptist Church.

Survivors include numerous cousins.

Mary Ellen Stuart Vincent
October 30, 1903 — December 31, 2000

Mary Ellen Vincent was born October 30, 1903 in Bryan to Randall A. and Ann Adair Stuart. A graduate of Bryan High School, she also received her Master’s degree from Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas. Mrs. Vincent became a Spanish teacher, educating many in Bryan, Brady and Comfort, Texas, until her retirement in 1970. Mrs. Vincent was acknowledged by the Spanish Honorary of Bryan High being named after her.

Involved in so many activities, she received many awards acknowledging her training in Spain, Central America and Mexico.

Mrs. Vincent was a founding member of the Texas Pan American Round Table, an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bryan where she taught the Volunteer Sunday School Class for more than 50 years and was a member of the choir. She was a member of the Bryan Poetry Society and enjoyed playing bridge. Mary Ellen volunteered through many organizations including the Women’s Federal Prison and Lamar Junior High School.

She is preceded in death by her husband, John Blackstone Vincent; and her son, Charles Homer Vincent.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Anne Homan Vincent of Lometa, Texas; two granddaughters, Ellen Lyle Vincent of Dallas, Texas, and Katie Sara Vincent of Austin, Texas; one niece and one nephew and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

Family visitation is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hillier Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Hillier Funeral Home with Dr. Philip W. McLarty of First Presbyterian Church of Bryan officiating and with Dr. Robert Leslie to assist. Interment will follow in the Bryan City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Twin City Mission or to the First Presbyterian Church of Bryan.

Barbarita Martinez
Dec. 5, 1932 — Jan. 1, 2001

Services for Barbarita Martinez, 68, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Templo Sulamita in Bryan.

The Rev. Edward Hernandez of Templo Sulamita will officiate. Burial will be in Bryan City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.
A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Martinez died Monday at her home.

She was born in Llano Grande, Texas, and had lived in Bryan for most of her life. She was a member of Templo la Hermosa in Caldwell and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose Martinez.

Survivors include four sons and three daughters-in-law, Jose and Yolanda Martinez of Mission, Texas, Arturo and Minerva Martinez of San Marcos, Texas, Samuel and Lisa Martinez of Bryan, and Moises Martinez of Dallas; a daughter and son-in-law, Christina and Richard Martinez of Bryan; two stepsisters, Felipa Villalpando of Bryan and Hermelinda Tirado Sanchez of Rio Bravo, Mexico; four brothers, Pedro Avendano of Linares, N.L., Mexico, Santiago Avendano of Reynosa, Mexico, and Jose Avendano Jr. and Pedro Avendano, both of Bryan; a stepbrother, Roberto Tirado of Rio Bravo; six sisters, Dolores Ocon of Caldwell, Juana Muniz of Reynosa, Gloria Garcia and Margarette Hernandez, both of Mission, Tomasa Barrera of Alton, Texas, and Mariana Colunga of Donna, Texas; 20 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Annie Elizabeth Burrell
Sept. 9, 1931 — Dec. 28, 2000

NAVASOTA — Services for Annie Elizabeth Burrell, 69, of Navasota are set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Truevine Baptist Church in Navasota.

The Rev. W.M. Gantt of Truevine Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Dennis Bryant Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Jones Funeral Home in Navasota.
Mrs. Burrell died Thursday at her home.

She was born in Grimes County and was a lifelong resident of Navasota. She was a member of Truevine Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, James Wesley Burrell of Conroe, Texas; a daughter, Marilyn Stella Prosper of Navasota; two sisters, Jessie Marie Seymore of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Othella Love-Humphrey of Navasota; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Richard E. ‘Dick’ Magee Sr.
Nov. 9, 1916 — Dec. 26, 2000

NAVASOTA — Services for Richard E. “Dick” Magee Sr., 84, of Anderson are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Nobles Funeral Chapel in Navasota.

The Rev. Fred Seay of the First Presbyterian Church in Navasota and Richard Magee Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Anderson.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Magee died Tuesday in Bryan.

He was born in Brookhaven, Miss., and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a lieutenant JG. He graduated from Mississippi State University in 1940 and was retired as executive vice president for Wyatt C. Hedrick in Houston. He was a member of the American Legion in Anderson, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, MENSA, International Society for Philosophic Inquiry and was a mason.

Survivors include his wife, Zelda Magee of Anderson; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Richard E. Jr. and Judy Magee of Las Cruces, N.M., John William and Debra Magee of Stoneham, Texas, Chester Magee of Houston and Charles Edward and Lori Magee of Las Vegas; a daughter, Mary Helen “Susie” Townsend of Austin; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John L. and Priscilla Magee of California and Fred and Mavis Magee of Catoosa, Okla.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Inez and George Reid of Point Blank, Texas, and Jonnie and Chester Clark of Brookhaven, Miss.; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Nicole Lynn ‘Nikki’ Duhr
Jan. 20, 1981 — Dec. 30, 2000

BREMOND — Services for Nicole Lynn “Nikki” Duhr, 19, of Bremond are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bremond Funeral Home in Bremond.

Terry Sealey of the Calvert Pentecostal Church will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home by the Rev. Celso Yu of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bremond.

Miss Duhr died Saturday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

She was born in Hearne and worked at the Coal Mine Restaurant in Bremond. She was a Catholic.

Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Betty and Darrell Kyle of Bremond; a brother and sister-in-law, Daniel and Kelly Barnett of Bremond; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Angela and Randy Tucker, Tina Barnett, Julie Duhr and Jamie Duhr, all of Bremond; her grandparents, Natalie Duhr and Eldon Wiley, both of Bremond, and Dorothy Wiley of Calvert; and her great-grandmother, Mrs. R.C. Wiley of Bremond.
Memorials may be made to the family of Nicole Duhr to help with medical expenses.

Martin John ‘Mike’ Leitko Sr.
July 15, 1919 — Dec. 31, 2000

THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Services for Martin John “Mike” Leitko Sr., 81, of The Woodlands and formerly of Bryan are set for 1 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Forest Park The Woodlands.

Burial will be in St. Matthews Lutheran Church Cemetery in Spring, Texas.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to the time of services Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Leitko died Sunday.

He was born in Old Dime Box and was a veteran of World War II. During his years in Bryan, he owned and operated Leitko Texaco.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Frieda Leitko; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael and Margaret Kowis Leitko of Lago Vista, Texas, Martin John “Johnny” Leitko Jr. of Houston and Dennis Leitko of The Woodlands; a daughter, Cheryl Leitko of The Woodlands; three grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.

Tommy Gene Newman
July 31, 1951 — Dec. 30, 2000

BRENHAM — Services for Tommy Gene Newman, 49, of Washington are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fellowship Baptist Church in Washington County.

The Rev. Darren Donaldson will officiate. Burial will be in Good Hope Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham.

Mr. Newman died Saturday in an auto accident.

He was born in Brenham and was employed by Fairbanks Plastering.

Survivors include his wife, Gayle Koch Newman; two sons, Kevin Gene Newman of Washington and Casey Alan Newman of Brenham; his parents, Tommy and Louise Newman of Brenham; a sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Ray Averitt of Washington; his mother-in-law, Odel Koch of Brenham; a brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law, Larry Joe and Carol Koch and Terry Koch, all of Brenham; an aunt; numerous nieces and nephews; and a great-niece and nephew.
