Mohnike Wheeler Johnson
1913 — 2000

Mohnike Wheeler Johnson hoped she might live into the 21st Century. Reaching that goal would be a good finish to a life that began almost 88 years before, June 24, 1913, in Brazos County. She was a lifelong resident, born in the small town of Bryan, Texas, in a more innocent age just before The Great War, when the United States was a handful of big cities and a few million people living on farms and in small towns spread out across thousands of miles of farm land.

Mohnike didn’t quite make it. She passed away just 30 hours before the 20th Century ended, Saturday, December 30, 2000, at Montgomery Convalescent Hospital in Santa Rosa, California, after a long disability and illness.

Mrs. Johnson moved to Santa Rosa from Bryan three years ago to be near her oldest son and his family. She had two sons who grew up in College Station — James Johnson, Texas A&M Class of ’57, and Charles Johnson, Class of ’58. Two of her grandsons were also Aggies — Richard Johnson, Class of ’84, and Chris Johnson, Class of ’86. Son James and grandson Chris are residents of Santa Rosa, Calif., Charles lives in Allen, Texas, and Richard lives in Bentonville, Arkansas. Four other grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive her.

Mohnike and her family were an integral part of Brazos County for most of the 20th Century. Her ancestors were pioneers who came to Texas more than 150 years ago, when the state was still a republic. Her mother and father moved to Bryan in 1898, where they started a family of five girls and one boy. Charles Cody Wheeler was the young pastor of the Bryan Freewill Baptist Church until he was killed in a tragic train wreck in 1917. His widow, Maude Gant Wheeler, was determined to keep the family together, taking in washing and ironing and boarders while her children grew to maturity.

In 1930, Mohnike Wheeler married a talented singer, Walter Johnson, who served as educational director and choir leader at several Bryan-College Station Baptist churches before World War II. After the war, they returned to Brazos County, where he continued his church dedication and worked as a mail clerk at the U.S. Post Office in College Station until his death at age 61. They lived on a small farm near Northgate until moving to a new home on Turkey Creek Road, near Easterwood Airport in 1956. After her husband’s death in 1964, Mohnike dedicated the rest of her life to serving her church and the Lord, and to being a loving grandmother.

No funeral services are planned for Mohnike Johnson, but a memorial service will be held in her honor at her beloved Calvary Baptist Church, 2009 Cavitt Drive in Bryan, Sunday afternoon, January 28, at 2 p.m. She will be buried in the family plot at Bryan City Cemetery, near her mother and father, two sisters, her husband of 35 years and other family members.

For more information, call Calvary Baptist Church at 822-3570.
