Glen Ray Morgan
Oct. 11, 1922 — Jan. 13, 2001

ROCKDALE — Services for Glen Ray Morgan, 78, of Milano are set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

The Rev. Richard Ruzicka of Buckholts will officiate. Burial will be in the Hurt Cemetery near Milano.

Mr. Morgan died Saturday in the Heritage House Nursing Center in Rosebud.

He was born in Milam County and was a lifelong resident of Milano. He was a farmer.

Survivors include seven sisters, Vera Williams of Goldthwaite, Texas, Thelma Morgan, Minnie Ruzicka, both of Cameron, Miriam Morgan of Milano, Mary Ponder of Houston, Jean Olin of Tomball, Texas, and Joan Griffith of Rockdale.

Alejo Sotelo
Feb. 17, 1945 — Jan. 14, 2001

JEWETT — Services for Alejo Sotelo, 55, of Jewett are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Katerina Catholic Church in Buffalo.

The Rev. Ted Rydelek will officiate. Burial will be in Sardis Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Ricks Funeral Home in Jewett.

Mr. Sotelo died Sunday in Jewett.

He was born in Mexico, and worked for Helcamp in Jewett for two years. He formerly was a resident of Piedras Negras, Coah., Mexico. He was a Catholic.

Survivors include his wife, Antonia Sotelo of Jewett; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Alejandro Felipe and Paloma Sotelo, and Jesus Sotelo, all of Jewett; a daughter, Roxana Sotelo of Palestine, Texas; two brothers, Jose Mardonio Sotelo and Francisco Sotelo, both of Piedras Negras; two sisters, Martha Sotelo and Juanita Sotelo Jimenez, both of Piedras Negras; and three grandchildren.

Agnes Helen Bownds
Aug. 24, 1924 — Jan. 13, 2001

ROCKDALE — Services for Agnes Helen Bownds, 76, of Lexington are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

Deacon Don Sims of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rockdale will officiate. Burial will be in the Mesquite Cemetery near Lexington.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Bownds died Saturday in Rock Island, Texas.

She was born in Urichsville, Ohio, and lived in Lexington 37 years. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Royce T. Bownds; and two daughters, Susan Eitner and Nancy Ahrendt.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, R.T. “Terry “ Bownds Jr. of Houston and Patrick John and Nancy Faye Bownds of Rock Island; a daughter, Maureen Johnson of Taylor, Texas; three sisters, Mary J. Merrick, Ann Butler and Patricia Hauser, all of Ohio; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Keith Galpin Schmidt
Jan. 17, 1920 — Jan. 15, 2001

Graveside services for Keith Galpin Schmidt, 80, of Bryan are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Waco Memorial Park in Waco.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors in Waco.

Local arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.

Mr. Schmidt died Monday in the College Station Medical Center.

He attended schools in Wheaton, Ill., and lived in Bryan since June 2000. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and worked for several paper companies. He joined Gulf States Paper in Waco in 1963 and was a manager until his retirement in 1985.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ernestine Schmidt.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Joann Schmidt of Cummings, Ga., and Ron and Vickie Schmidt of Bryan; a daughter, Patti York of Waco; a brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Jean Schmidt of Estes Park, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Myrtle Schmidt of Montgomery, Ill.; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of the Brazos Valley.

Janet Marie Sherwood
March 6, 1928 — Jan. 14, 2001

CAMERON — Graveside services for Janet Marie Sherwood, 72, of Rockdale are set for 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Milano Cemetery.

The Rev. Charles Cole will officiate.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Cameron.

Mrs. Sherwood died Sunday in a Rockdale hospital.

She was born in Milano and was a retired sales clerk and homemaker.

Survivors include a brother, Berrien Claude Williams of Rockdale; and a sister, Norine Lagrone of Milano.

John Herman (J.H.) Carroll
July 18, 1938 — Jan. 14, 2001

A private family service for John Herman (J.H.) Carroll, 62, of Bryan will be scheduled for a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.
Mr. Carroll died Sunday at his home in Bryan.

He was born in Caldwell. He had been a resident of Bryan since 1969. He served in the U.S. Army, 82nd Air Borne Division. He was a crew supervisor for Alenco, until his retirement in 1999. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Caldwell.
Survivors include his wife, Gwenda Carroll of Bryan; one son, Kenny Carroll of Bryan; two stepsons and a daughter-in-law, Bill and Gwen Meeks and David Yarbrough, all of Oklahoma; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Joe John Fazzino of Bryan; a stepdaughter, Alenda Carroll of College Station; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Richard Hamburg and Nancy and Ronnie NeSmith, all of Bryan; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley, 205 E. 29th St., Bryan 77803, or the American Cancer Society, 3207 Briarcrest Drive, Bryan 77802.

Helon Doris Hammond
Nov. 12, 1913 — Jan. 14, 2001

GROVES, Texas — Services for Helon Doris Hammond, 87, of Groves are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Clayton-Thompson Funeral Home in Groves. The Rev. W.P. Murchison will officiate. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Zion Cemetery in Iola.
Mrs. Hammond died Sunday in Groves.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo Hammond.She was born in Iola. She was a nurse’s aide at St. Mary’s Hospital in Port Arthur. Mrs. Hammond was a member of Val Verde Baptist Church.

Survivors include her three daughters, Trula Cross of Bridge City, Texas, Tena Hammond of Austin, Patsy LaGrone of Groves; a son, Buddy Hammond of Port Arthur, two brothers, Lee Gilpin of San Antonio, Woodrow Gilpin of Kurten; and one sister, Trula Mize of Reliance.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Ruth Benavidez
March 21, 1917 — Jan. 14, 2001

A mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday for Ruth Benavidez, 83, of College Station. The mass will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in College Station. Rev. David Konderla will officiate. Burial will be in College Station Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 8:30 to 9 a.m. Friday at Hillier Funeral Home.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Deacon Bill Scott.
Mrs. Benavidez died Sunday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

She was born in Bastrop, Texas. She was a homemaker and had lived in College Station for 62 years. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, Eusebio Q. Benavidez of College Station; three sons and daughters-in-law, Willie and Mary Benavidez of Brenham, Frank and Agnes Benavidez of Pearland, Eusebio “Sonny” and Susie Benavidez of Simi Valley, Calif.; a daughter, Bea Marin of Bryan; a sister, Juanita Saldana of San Antonio; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Annabelle Nichols Linton
Nov. 19, 1906 — Jan. 13, 2001

BRENHAM — Services for Annabelle Nichols Linton, 94, of Brenham are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lindley-Robertson-Holt Funeral Home in Navasota. The Rev. Lacy Largent of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Linton died Saturday at Bluebonnet Hills Care Center in Brenham.

She was born in Waco and was a former resident of Navasota. She was a retired medical assistant with Methodist Hospital in Houston.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Linton.Survivors include her sister, Lorene D. Lackey of Claremont, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Elsie Nichols of Navasota; and three grandchildren.

Mavis Clyde McBride
Sept. 26, 1913 — Jan. 15, 2001

CAMP CREEK COMMUNITY — Services for Mavis Clyde McBride, 87, of Camp Creek community in Robertson County are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the McCauley Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin. Charles Renfroe of the Black Jack community in Robertson County will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near Franklin.
Mrs. McBride died Monday in Waco.

She was born in the Camp Creek community and was a member of the New Baden Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Matthew “Bill” McBride.
Survivors include her daughter, Thelma Moore of Brenham; two sons and daughters-in-law, Stanley and Norma McBride of Camp Creek, Mack and Diane McBride of Houston; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lois McKalip Miller
Dec. 7, 1916 — Jan. 16, 2001

SAN ANTONIO — Services for Lois McKalip Miller, 84, of San Antonio, formerly of Bryan, are set for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. The Rev. Bob Richers of First United Methodist Church in Bryan will officiate. Burial will be in Bryan City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to service time Thursday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

Mrs. Miller died Tuesday in San Antonio.

She was born in Mexia, Texas. She was a homemaker. She grew up in the Smetana community near Bryan and attended the Smetana public school. She was a member of the St. Matthews Methodist Church in San Antonio.

Survivors include her husband, John Elvon Miller of Temple, Texas; her son and daughter-in-law, Elvon (Jerry) and Jose Miller of San Antonio; her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Herb Rosencrans of Salado, Texas; her sister, Mattie Henry of Bryan; four grandchildren and four great-granchildren.

Melvin W. Jensen
March 1, 1910 — Jan. 15, 2001

Washington — Services for Melvin W. Jensen, 90, of Washington are set for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Friedens Church of Washington, U.C.C. The Rev. Glen E. Schoeneberg of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Burton will officiate. Burial will be in Friedens Church Cemetery in Washington.

Arrangements are under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel in Navasota.
Mr. Jensen died Monday in Brenham.

He was born in Washington. He was the owner of Jensen’s Package Store from 1954-1972. He was a self-employed carpenter. He had been a charter member of VFW in Brenham and was also a member of the Farm Bureau. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942-1945 and received a Good Conduct Medal.

Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Bennie and Willie Mae Jensen of Washington; a sister, Olga Holle of Washington and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Winnie Lee Patterson Hayward
April 6, 1912 — Jan. 15, 2001

MILLICAN — Services for Winnie Lee Patterson Hayward, 88, of Millican are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Nobles Funeral Chapel in Navasota. The Rev. Dan Bates of Millican will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Mrs. Hayward died Monday in Navasota.

She was born in Navasota and was a homemaker. She was a charter member of Millican Ladies Club and a member of the Millican Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hartwell Hayward.

Survivors include three brothers and a sister-in-law, James Monroe (Cotton) and Vera Patterson of Millican, Myrtle Patterson of Millican, Jaunita Patterson of College Station; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
