Lois Williams

JEWETT — Services for Lois Williams, 82, of Jewett are set for 3 p.m. Thursday at the Ephesus Baptist Church near Jewett. The Revs. Ray Payne and Bob Burgin will officiate. Burial will be in the Sardis Cemetery near Jewett.

Arrangements are under the direction of Walters Funeral Home in Centerville.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until noon Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Williams died Tuesday at a Madisonville hospital.

She was a lifelong resident of Leon County, spending most of her life in the Jewett area. She was a homemaker and a member of the Ephesus Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ories Williams.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Ories Lee “Bo” and Paula Williams of the Old Bowling community near Marquez; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marie and Charles Hancock of Jewett and Marsha and Larry Tyree of Houston; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Valton and Florence Burgin of Lancaster, Edgar Burgin of Jewett and Rev. Bob and Tillie Burgin of Arlington; a sister, Imogene Freeman of Dallas; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many friends and other relatives.

Elsie C. Peters
May 10, 1914 — Jan. 30, 2001

NAVASOTA — Services for Elsie C. Peters, 86, of Navasota are set for 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church of Navasota. Pastor Don Kasper will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lindley-Robertson-Holt Funeral Home of Navasota.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 7 to 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home and 10 a.m. to service time Friday at the church.

A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Peters died Tuesday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

She was born in Washington County. She was a homemaker. She attended Sandy Hill School in Washington County and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband, Bernhardt “Bennie” Peters of Navasota; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Arnold Peters of Carmine and Ernest and Esther Hemann of White Hall; Emma Addicks of Brenham, Lonnie Addicks of Brenham and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 1530 E. Washington Ave., Navasota, 77868.

Sam Garcia Jr.
June 23, 1928 — Jan. 30, 2001

A Mass for Sam Garcia Jr., 72, of Bryan is set for 2 p.m. Friday at St. Teresa Catholic Church. The Rev. Victor Robles will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan. A rosary will be recited by the Rev. John McCaffrey at 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Garcia died Tuesday at St. Joseph Rehabiliation Center. He was born in Bryan. He was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Garcia of Bryan; four sons and a daughter-in-law, Sam Garcia III, Steven and Carol Garcia and Sergio “Sonny” Garcia, all of San Antonio, and Paul Ortega Jr. of Austin; two daughters and a son-in-law, Maria Yolanda and Roy Arellano of San Antonio and Victoria Plotnik of Dallas; two sisters, Maria Ramirez of Texarkana and Adela Mendez of Bryan; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Teresa Catholic Church, 1212 Lucky St., Bryan, Texas, 77803.

Joyce Everett Armstrong
Nov. 10, 1929 — Jan. 30, 2001

Services for Joyce Everett Armstrong, 71, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Friday at Callaway-Jones Chapel in Bryan. Burial will be in Bryan City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Armstrong died Tuesday at St. Joseph Rehabilation Center.

She was born in San Antonio and lived in Bryan for most of her life. She was a member of Central Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Robert C. Armstrong of Bryan; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Kay Armstrong of Bryan; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Armstrong and Ron Shaw of Magnolia and Sandra “Sandi” Armstrong and Lawrence Smith of College Station; a sister, Doris Herzog of Bryan; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Sharon J. Kennon
Dec. 31, 1950 — Jan. 25, 2001

LYTLE, Texas — Services for Sharon J. Kennon, 50, of Lytle are set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Galilee Baptist Church in Bryan. The Revs. Foster of Bryan and . E.L. Granderson of New St. Mark Baptist Church in San Antonio will officiate. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Bryan.

A wake service is set for 7 p.m. Friday at F.E. Lewis Memorial Chapel in San Antonio. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Home in San Antonio.

Ms. Kennon died Thursday in San Marcos. She was born in Bryan.

Jimmy ‘Cricket’ Rodriguez Sr.
Dec. 14, 1945 — Jan. 29, 2001

Services for Jimmy “Cricket” Rodriguez Sr., 55, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Friday at Santa Teresa Catholic Church. The Rev. Victor Robles will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 8 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Rodriguez died Monday.

He was a lifetime resident of Bryan. He was a licensed plumber and a member of LULAC Council #229.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Rodriguez of Bryan; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Jane and Francisco Aguillon Sr., Josie and Ted Sanchez Sr. and Virginia and Rene Carmona, all of Bryan; four sons, Jimmy Rodiguez Jr, Tony Rodriguez, Vincent “Shorty” Rodriguez and Ernest Rodriguez, all of Bryan; a brother and sister-in-law, Victor and Eluteria Rodriguez Sr. of Caldwell; a sister and brother-in-law, Josie and Martin Jimenez Sr. of Bryan; and ten grandchildren.

Walter William Koester
July 27, 1924 — Jan. 31, 2001

BRENHAM — Services for Walter William Koester, 76, of Brenham are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Wiedeville. The Revs. Jon Siemsglusz and Cecil Rice will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery .

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham.

Mr. Koester died Wednesday in Trinity Medical Center.

He was born in the William Penn community of Washington County. He attended Washington County public schools and Blinn College. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Koester was employed as the head overhauler at Brentex Mills for 58 years. He was a member of VFW James F. Dillon Post.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Koester of Brenham; a son, Donald Koester of Brenham; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Chester and Pat Rice, Earl and Shirley Middlesteadt, Louis and Bernice Bilski, Bill and Deloris Garrett, Caroline Rice, Mike Rice, the Rev. Cecil and Carol Rice, Linda Rice and Jerry Rice; a granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church of Wiedeville Building Fund.

James L. ‘Pappy’ Rosier
Feb. 18, 1924 — Jan. 31, 2001

Services for James L. “Pappy” Rosier, 76, of Bryan are set 10 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. The Rev. Bob Wolfert of Central Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be in New Church Cemetery near Edge.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. Rosier died Wednesday at his home in Bryan.

He was born in Madison County and retired from Texas A&M University after 31 years as a custodial supervisor. He was a World War II veteran of the Navy. He was a member of Central Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Rosier of Bryan; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Bob Rosier of Anderson, Ken and Molly Rosier of Edge and Tom and Lynn Rosier of Minot, Minn.; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Emma and Jimmy Pletzer of College Station; two stepdaughters and a son-in-law, Judy Billings of Bryan and Elaine and Billy Mac Miller of College Station; two brothers and sisters-in-laws, Sigal and Ruby Rosier of Bryan, and Glen and Mary Ann Rosier of Woodville; a half-brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Stazie Rosier of Dalhart; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mackie Mitchell of Bryan and Amy and Milton Kurten of Kurten; a half-sister, Rosa Batten of Bryan; a sister-in-law, Lena Rosier of Bryan; 21 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Brazos Valley.

Ella Mae Williams Burns
Nov. 29, 1942 — Jan. 30, 2001

HEARNE — Services for Ella Mae Williams Burns, 58, of Hearne are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Old Elam Baptist Church in Hearne. The Rev. F.C. Lewis will officiate. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Hearne.

Arrangements are under the direction of Robertson Funeral Chapel in Hearne.

Mrs. Burns died Tuesday at Scott & White Hospital in Temple.

She was born in Hearne and was a homemaker. She was a member of Old Elam Baptist Church, where she served as vice president of the choir.

Survivors include her husband, Calvin H. Burns of Hearne; four sons, Ronnie Williams, Ricky Burns and Louis Burns, all of Hearne, and Calvin Burns Jr. of Bryan; five daughters, Deborah Murphy and Elvira Pierce, both of Hearne, Vicky Burns of Baltimore, Md., Joyce Godfrey of Jacksonville, N.C., and Kashonda Woods of Dallas; a sister, Helen Williams of Hearne; her mother, Elvira Seymore of Hearne; a brother, Roy Lee Williams of Hearne; a stepbrother, William Athchison of Hearne; a stepsister, Juanita Atchison of Hearne; 23 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Reynaldo C. Perez
Feb. 25, 1925 — Jan. 31, 2001

GIDDINGS — Services for Reynaldo C. Perez, 75, of Giddings, and formerly of Bryan, are set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Templo Buenos Nuevas Assembly of God in Bryan.

The Revs. Rubin Manchaca, Maximo Rosas, Dean Wagoner and Jacob Perez will officiate. Burial will be in Bryan City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Wake service will be at 6 p.m. Friday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

Mr. Perez died Wednesday.

He was born in Bastrop. He was the president of the Youth Ambassadors at Templo Buenos Nuevas Assembly of God. He was the owner of Las Palmas Restaurants in Bryan and Giddings.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lydia Perez.

Survivors include five daughters, Alice Vega of Cresent City, Calif., Diana Villapando of Ontario, Calif., Elizabeth Alemen and Olga Perez, both of Bryan and Mary Louise Alvarado of Giddings; three sons, Jacob Perez of Ontario, David Perez of Giddings and Joshua Perez of Bryan; five sisters, Eulaila Rodriguez and Candida Beccerra, both of Bryan, and Petra Lopez, Matilda Padilla and Janie Gonzales, all of Waco; one brother, Isauro Perez of Hearne; 40 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

Veta Turner Backhus
Jan. 24, 1918 — Jan. 31, 2001

ANDERSON — Services for Veta Turner Backhus, 83, of Anderson are set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Lindley-Robertson-Holt Funeral Home in Navasota. Burial will be in Lake Grove Cemetery near Iola.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Backhus died Wednesday at Grimes St. Joseph Health Center.

She was born in the Mesa community of Grimes County and was a lifelong resident of Grimes County. Mrs. Backhus graduated from Iola schools. She was a former cafe owner and operator and had worked for the Grimes County District Clerk’s office and Shoe World. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Backhus.

Survivors include three sons and a daughter-in-law, LaVearne and Geralyn Backhus of Anderson, James Backhus of Navasota and Burk Backhus of New Waverly; a daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Randy Cleere of Anderson; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Turner of Galveston; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mary Ola Hamilton
Aug. 30, 1910 — Jan. 28, 2001

FT. WORTH — Graveside services for Mary Ola Hamilton, 90, of Fort Worth are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Zion Cemetery in Iola.

Arrangements are under the direction of BaumGardner Funeral Home in Fort Worth.

Mrs. Hamilton died Sunday.

She was born in Iola and lived and worked in Fort Worth for many years.

Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Verna Darby of Bryan and Thelma Darby of Tucson, Ariz.; a special friend, Janice Culpepper; and her family of Fort Worth; and numerous nieces and nephews.
