Dale Harding Smith

Services for Dale Harding Smith, 81, of Palestine will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Methodist Church in Palestine with the Rev. Scott Dornbush officiating.

Dale Harding Smith died at HomePlace Hospice of East  Texas Tuesday, April 6, 2004. He was born in Houston Nov. 30, 1922 to William Andrew and Ethel Harding Smith. His family moved to Palestine when he was 6 years old and has lived in Palestine all his life. He and his wife, Celia Owen Smith founded Palestine Concrete and Tile Company in May, 1945. He was a pioneer in the concrete block manufacturing business. With the purchase of another block plant in Dallas, today the business is one of the major suppliers of all shapes, sizes and colors of blocks throughout  Texas and beyond. He also made many other concrete products and with retirement his love of concrete continued with the making of red concrete hearts and giving them to all he met.

He attended Shriner College and the University of Missouri. He served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II in landing craft. He participated in the island invasions of Makin, Kwajalein, Tinian and in the first wave in the battle of Saipan.

As a member of the First United Methodist Church in Palestine, he served as chairman of the building committee for the Carroll Building built in 1986 and also for the Fellowship Hall built in 1990.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Wayne Smith of Palestine; his sister, Frances Friedman of Tyler.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Celia Owen Smith; daughters, Linda Smith Allison and her husband Charles Allison of Bay City, Sherry Smith Long and her husband David Long of Emerald Bay; sons, Dale Wayne Smith and his wife Brenda, Danny A. Smith and his wife Dorenda, all of Palestine; grandchildren, Joe Allison of Houston, Chad and Summer Moody and J.P. Moody of Austin and Camille Smith of Palestine; great-granddaughter, Ryann Marie Allison of Houston; sister, Dolly Ann Stallings of Matagorda; and goddaughter, Gail Smith Kelly of Monroe, Ga.

Much appreciation is extended to former loyal plant manager Archie Rampy, Armando Casas and all Palestine Concrete Tile employees. Special thanks also are extended to Dr. Michael Gorby and the First United Methodist Victor Sunday School Class.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Joe Allison, Chad Moody, J.P. Moody, Owen Smith, Evan Smith and Aaron Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Don Carroll, Paul Elliott, Ted Maffitt, Bobby Kenderdine, Bill Haney, Jack Wallace of Palestine and Bill Campbell of Austin.

Condolence calls will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Herrington Land of Memory Chapel. Interment will be in Roselawn Park following the service.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church, 422 S. Magnolia St., Palestine,  Texas 75801 or Hospice of East  Texas, 4111 University Blvd., Tyler,  Texas 75701.

Wilsie Brown Ross

Services for Wilsie Brown Ross, 92, of Tennessee Colony will be at noon Friday at Church of the Living God in Tennessee Colony with burial to follow in the New Hope No. 2 Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Emanuel Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ross died Monday in Cedar Hill.

Will Ledbetter

Graveside services for Will Ed Ledbetter, 91, of Bremond, and formerly of Palestine, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Palestine City Cemetery under the direction of Herrington/Land of Memory.

Mr. Ledbetter died Monday in Bremond.

Eliza Hamilton

Services for Eliza Hamilton will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Providence Baptist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Community Funeral Home in Waxahachie. Local arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.

A wake service will be held from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church before the service.

Mary Cecelia (Long) Ballard

Mrs. Ballard died this morning at MYA Health Care Center.

Mary Elom

Funeral arrangements for Mary Elom, 86, of Houston, and formerly of Palestine, are pending at Bailey & Foster.

Mrs. Elom died Wednesday night at Herman Memorial S.E. in Friendswood.

Mary Cecilia (Long) Ballard

Services for Mary Cecilia (Long) Ballard, 85, of Palestine will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Palestine Middle Cemetery with Rev. Jay Abernathy officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster.

Mrs. Ballard died Thursday morning at MYA Health Care Center in Palestine, and went home to rest in Jesus loving arms. She was born Aug. 24, 1918 in Palestine to Julian Elbert and Lelia (Wray) Long. She graduated from Palestine High School in 1936 and later attended Nixon Business College. She worked for 33 years with the Missouri Pacific Railroad in Palestine in the freight claims department, until her retirement in August 1978. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Palestine from 1930 to 1980.

Mrs. Ballard was preceded in death by her husband, Hal Ballard; mother, Lelia Jency Long; father, Julian Long; sister, Margaret Geneva Long; two brothers, Pascal E. Long and Charles E. Long; granddaughter, Deirdre Adele Ashley, daughter of Vernon and Benjy Ashley.

She is survived by her son, Vernon E. Ashley and wife Benjy of Clear Lake City,  Texas; numerous nieces and nephews; and very special friends, Barbara and Bill McKinney of Elkhart.

Condolence calls will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mary Reynolds Elom

Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, Mary Elom, passed away April 7, 2004. Born in Danville, Ill., and a lifelong resident of Oakwood, she was a loving Christian and precious encourager who was tenaciously devoted to her family. She passed away of heart disease complications in Friendswood. She was 86 years old.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ennis Rudloph Elom; her daughter, Patricia McCurdy; and her grandson, Richard McCurdy. She is survived by three sons, Mike McConathy Sr., Robert Elom and Daniel Elom; two daughters, Mary Beale and Lynda Stanforth; two sisters, Jennie Hutchins and Gladys Stark; and many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandbaby, nephews, nieces, family and friends.

Several of her grandsons will serve as her pallbearers, with one honorary who is serving our country in Iraq. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Bailey & Foster Chapel in Palestine, with Dr. Barry Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood City Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster, Palestine.

Condolence calls will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Jeff Holt

Services for Jeff Holt, 52, of Grapeland will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Parker Cemetery with the Rev. Richard Dobbins officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster, Grapeland.

Mr. Holt died Wednesday at East  Texas Medical Center in Crockett.

Condolence calls will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Jerry "Red" Eldridge

Services for Jerry "Red" Eldridge, 57, of Oakwood will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Oakwood City Cemetery under the direction of Buffalo Funeral Home.

Mr. Eldridge died Thursday at his residence.

Gary Wayne Jones

Services for Gary Wayne Jones, 59, of Porter will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Marquez Cemetery with Anne Dennix officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home of Buffalo.

Mr.  Jones died Sunday in Montgomery County.

Services for X.A. Alford, 83, of Fairfield will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Fairfield at 303 S. Mount St. Burial will follow at Bethel Cemetery in Oakwood under the direction of Emanuel Funeral Home of Teague.

Mr. Alford died Wednesday night at East  Texas Medical Center in Fairfield.

Robert Bill Betts Jr.

Services for Robert Bill Betts Jr., 73, of Oakland,  Calif., and formerly of Palestine, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Fuller Funeral Home Chapel in Oakland with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland.

Mr. Betts died Sunday.

He served in the U.S. Army then returned and graduated from A.M. Story High School in 1955.

Mr. Betts was preceded in death by four sons.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey Whitt Betts; son, Robert Betts II, both of Oakland; mother Louise Betts of San Bernadino,  Calif.; brother, David H. Betts of Tyler; sisters, Cecelia Lacy and Gailyn Young, both of Houston; and Annie McElroy of San Bernadino,  Calif.; granddaughter, Tenya; and great-granddaughter, Anastasia, both of Alameda,  Calif.

A wake will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Fuller Funeral Home.

Chase Westmoreland

Services for Chase Westmoreland, 18, of Crockett will be at 4 p.m. Thursday in the First United Methodist Church in Crockett with Dr. Jerry House officiating. Burial will follow in the Crawford Cemetery in Elkhart. Arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Allee Funeral Home.

Mr. Westmoreland died Monday in Jacksonville.

He was born July 24, 1985 in Houston.

Mr. Westmoreland was a 2003 graduate of Crockett High School and was attending Lon Morris Junior College in Jacksonville on a baseball scholarship playing for the Bear Cat baseball team. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Crockett.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Ron Alford, in 1999; and grandfather, Richard Westmoreland, in 1995.

Mr. Westmoreland is survived by his mother, Michele Westmoreland and Bob Overstreet of Crockett; father, Calvin Westmoreland and wife Lori of Bullard; stepbrother, Joe Monaghan of Kilgore; stepsister, Kari Monaghan of Houston; grandparents, Frances Alford of Elkhart, Nick and Jackie LaFleur of  Whitehouse and Joe and Willene Spellman of Bullard; uncle, Mike Alford and wife Laura of Nashville, Tenn.; cousins, Jacob and Jamison Alford of Nashville and Ryan Linn of Granbury; aunt, Brenda Linn and husband Mark of Granbury; and numerous other relatives.

Pallbearers will be Bob Overstreet III, Vance Bruner, Bryan Easterly, T.J. Tabor, Joe Monaghan, Neal McCoy, Jacob Alford and Mike Innerarity.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
