Sept. 18, 1901 — Feb. 6, 2001

HEARNE — A graveside service for Elizabeth Moore Klement, 99, of Hearne is set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Norwood Cemetery in Hearne. Howard Martin of United Methodist Church in Troy, Texas, will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Heartfield Funeral Home in Hearne.

Mrs. Klement died Tuesday.

She was born in Ennis. She was a homemaker and a co-owner of the Wholesale Grocery in Hearne. She was a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her husband, A.W. Klement.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, John Klement of Temple, Louis and Janet Klement of Troy, and Frank and Lois Klement of Carvallis, Texas; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Tommie Marie McRee
Oct. 30, 1917 — Feb. 7, 2001

LEONA — Services for Tommie Marie McRee, 83, of Leona are set for 11 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Centerville. The Rev. Larry Ashley will officiate. Burial will be in the Evans Chapel Cemetery near Leona.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Walters Funeral Home in Centerville.

Mrs. McRee died Wednesday.

She was born in Marquez. She was a lifelong resident of Leon County and a member of the First Baptist Church in Centerville. She was a waitress for more than 30 years in Centerville and Leona.

Survivors include her husband, William B. McRee of Leona; a daughter and son-in-law, Dixie and Kenneth Streeter of Tomball; a sister, Doris Jean McWhirter of Austin; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ira Thomas
June 19, 1914 — Feb. 5, 2001

NAVASOTA — Services for Ira Thomas, 86, of Navasota are set for 11 a.m. Friday at Greater New Hope Baptist Church in Navasota. The Rev. O.D. Vanduren will officiate. Burial will be in Little Flock Cemetery in Anderson.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home Chapel in Navasota.

Mr. Thomas died Monday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.

He was born in Grimes County. He was a farmer.

Survivors include ten sons and five daughters-in-law, Charles and Bobbie McGee of Dallas; Johnny Thomas, Melvin and Ovenia Thomas, George Thomas, Ira Charles and Debra Matthews, Bobby Matthews, all of Navasota; Jerry and Madine Thomas of Brenham; Herbert Thomas of Houston, Oscar Matthews, Andrew and Willie Suel of Abilene; two daughters, Alice Reed of Abilene and Carolyn Beasley of Lynwood, Wash.; one brother, Cleveland Thomas of Navasota; one sister, Daisy Thomas of Navasota; and a host of relatives.

John D. Volk
Feb. 27, 1931 — Feb. 6, 2001

A memorial service for John D. Volk, 69, of College Station is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Callaway-Jones Chapel in Bryan. Marilyn Guynes, chaplain of Hospice Brazos Valley, will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home.

Mr. Volk died Tuesday at his home in College Station.

He was born in Chilicothe, Mo. He graduated from Gallatin High School in Gallatin, Mo., and attended Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in Maryville, Mo. He received a master’s degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia. He moved to Bryan in 1981 and worked with A.G. Edwards. In 1986 he founded Magic Broom Home Cleaning. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Shirley H. Volk of College Station; his son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Jan Volk of Bryan; his sister and brother-in-law, JoAnn and Frank Worssam of Overland Park, Kan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley, 205 E. 29th St., Bryan, Texas 77803.

Eva Mae Eaton
Aug. 6, 1905 — Feb. 2, 2001

Services for Eva Mae Eaton, 95, of Bryan are set for 1 p.m. Friday at North Bryan New Birth Baptist Church. The Rev. Lonzell Payton will officiate. Burial will be in Cannon Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Jones-Washington Mortuary.

Miss Eaton died Friday at her home in Bryan.

She was born in Dikins, Texas. She was a homemaker and attended Prairie View A&M. Miss Eaton was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Leonora Francis and Devora Dobson, both of Boston, and Iola Monroe of Bryan; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

James Garrett Tarver
Nov. 19, 1923 — Feb. 8, 2001

MADISONVILLE — Services for James Garrett Tarver, 77, of Madisonville are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Madisonville Funeral Home. Lanier Stevens will officiate. Burial will be in the Farris Cemetery.

Visitation is set from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. to service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. Tarver died Thursday at Madison St. Joseph Health Center.

He was born in Madison County. He worked for Armco Steel in Houston as a maintenance supervisor. He moved to Madisonville in 1983. He was a World War II veteran in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Tarver was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and the Paralyzed Veterans.

Survivors include his wife, Sherry Tarver of Madisonville; a son, Garrett B. Tarver of Galveston; a daughter, Dena Sue Tarver of Conroe; two brothers, Jerald Tarver of Madisonville, and Donald Gene Tarver of Sealy.

Charles Edward “Chuck” Cooks
Aug. 5, 1969 — Feb. 4, 2001

HEARNE — Services for Charles Edward “Chuck” Cooks, 31, of Hearne are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the New Elam Baptist Church in Hearne. The Rev. O.W. Mack will officiate. Burial will be in the Port Sullivan Cemetery in Cameron.

Arrangements are under the direction of Robertson Funeral Chapel in Hearne.

Mr. Cooks died Sunday in Hearne.

He was born in Milam County. He attended Cameron schools.

Survivors include his son, Charles Cooks Jr. of Hearne; his father, James Cooks Sr., of Hearne; two brothers, James Cooks Jr. of Haskell, Texas, and Frederick Cooks of Midland; seven sisters, Estella Hart of Midland, Addie Jones of Houston; Ora Mae Cooks of Dallas, Lois Willis, Carla Cooks, Margaret “Tina” Johnson and Diedra Williams, all of Hearne; and his grandmother, Lora Gibson of Cameron.

Barkley Williams
Aug. 25, 1927 — Feb. 1, 2001

GRIFFIN CHAPEL— Services for Barkley Williams, 73, of Rockdale are set for noon Saturday at Griffin Chapel A.M.E. Church in Griffin Chapel. The Rev. Elmer Snell will officiate. Burial will be in Griffin Chapel Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

Mr. Williams died Thursday at Manor Oaks Nursing Home in Rockdale.

He was born in the Griffin Chapel community. He was a self-employed auto mechanic. He was a member of Griffin Chapel A.M.E. Church in Griffin Chapel. He attended school at Griffin Chapel.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Rae Williams of Griffin Chapel; two sons, Ambrose Williams and Johnny Williams; two brothers and a sister-in-law, John and Mildred Williams of Griffin Chapel, Calvin Williams of Compton, Calif., two sisters, Gloria Gray of West Virginia and Lonnie Odom of Houston; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Sanford ‘Sandy’ Foster Sr.
Aug. 9, 1944 — Feb. 6, 2001

SPRING — Graveside services for Sanford “Sandy” Foster, Sr., 56, of Spring, and formerly of Brazos County, are set for 10 a.m. Friday at Steephollow Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home. Mr. Leslie Boone of Cavitt Street Church of Christ will officiate.

Mr. Foster died Wednesday at The Woodlands.

He was born in Houston. He was a construction supervisor for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice until his retirement. He was a graduate of Jessie Jones High School in Houston and had an associate degree in blacksmithing from Sam Houston State University. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Elkhart.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Sanford “Easy” and Sarah Foster Jr. of Bryan and Roy Foster of Elkhart; and a sister, Nancy Loughridge of Spring.

Rebeca Peña
Nov. 25, 1913 — Feb. 8, 2001

Services for Rebeca Peña, 87, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Monday at Santa Teresa Catholic Church in Bryan.

The Rev. Victor Robles of Santa Teresa Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Peña died Thursday at her home.

She was born in Eagle Pass, Texas, and was a lifelong resident of Bryan. She was a member of Santa Teresa Catholic Church and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymundo Peña.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Rafael and Dora Peña and Corando and Barbara Peña, all of Bryan, and Joe R. and Santa Peña of Eagle Pass; four brothers and a sister-in-law, Roberto and Marcelina Rosales, Juan Rosales, Raul Rosales and Domingo Rosales, all of Mexico; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Julia DeLeon, Gloria and Daniel Cortinas and Vita Ochoa, all of Mexico; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Santa Teresa Catholic Church.

Jack Lee Boyd
Aug. 27, 1943 — Feb. 8, 2001

BREMOND — Services for Jack Lee Boyd, 57, of Bremond are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bremond Funeral Home.

The Rev. Matt Smith of Faith Baptist Church in Bald Prairie, Texas, will officiate. Burial will be in Nesbitt Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to the time of the services Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. Boyd died Thursday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

He was a lifelong resident of Bremond and was a retired farmer.

Survivors include seven brothers and five sisters-in-law, Jim Joe Boyd of Bryan, Thomas Jefferson Boyd and Calvin and Debra Boyd, all of Bremond, Robert and Earlene Boyd of Houston, James and Naomi Boyd of Hearne, Roger and Darlene Boyd of Howe, Texas, and Richard and Diana Boyd of Milano; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Marie Sydlik of Bryan and Ruby and James McKay of Caldwell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Abner Morgan Chaffin
Dec. 25, 1937 — Feb. 6, 2001

MOCKSVILLE, N.C. — Services for Abner Morgan Chaffin, 63, of Mocksville are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Ijames Baptist Church in Mocksville.

The Revs. Tommy Faust, Franklin Myers, John Parks and Joe K. Woodward will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery .

Arrangements are under the direction of Eaton Funeral Home in Mocksville.

Mr. Chaffin died Tuesday.

He was born in Davie County, N.C., and was retired from Hoechst-Celanese and also was a retired tobacco farmer. He was a member of Ijames Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Smith Chaffin.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Chaffin of Mocksville; two sons, Dr. Morgan Keith Chaffin of College Station and Bryan K. Chaffin of Mocksville; four brothers, Norman S. Chaffin of Advance, N.C., Edwin Dale Chaffin of Mocksville, Thurmond Odus Chaffin of Welaka, Fla., and Gary Ijames Chaffin of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sisters, Doris Chaffin Kurfees and Bonnie Chaffin Gunter, both of Harmony, N.C., ; and a grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Ijames Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 477 Sheffield Road, Mocksville, N.C. 27028.
