Winfred Freeman Imel
Sept. 14, 1931 — Feb. 14, 2001

MADISONVILLE — Services for Winfred Freeman Imel, 69, of Madisonville are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Second Baptist Church in Madisonville.

Arrangements are under the direction of Madisonville Funeral Home.

Mr. Imel died Wednesday at his home.

He was born in Sasakwa, Okla., and lived in Madisonville for 10 months. He formerly lived in Florida for 20 years. He owned his own construction business and attended the Second Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Imel of Madisonville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Linda Imel of Kerrville, Robert and Amy Imel of Dallas and Bruce and Helen Imel of Lancaster, Pa.; a brother, Earl Imel of Las Vegas; two sisters, Loydene Keener of La Feria, Texas, and Donieta Kowis of Laredo, and 10 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Society, the American Heart Association, the Second Baptist Church or to a charity of choice.

Kenneth McElroy
Feb. 22, 1937 — Feb. 15, 2001

NORMANGEE — Services for Kenneth McElroy, 63, of Houston are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Cozart Funeral Chapel in Normangee.

Bro. Sam Manning of the First United Pentecostal Church will officiate. Burial will be in Ellison Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. McElroy died Thursday in St. Lukes Hospital in Houston.

He was born in Houston and served in the U.S. Navy. He was a retired truck driver for Air Freight in Houston and was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Ann McElroy of Houston; a son, Christopher McElroy of Houston; a daughter, Robin McElroy of Houston; a brother, William McElroy of Normangee; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Lynda and Billy Joe Glover and Billie Jean Smith, all of Normangee.

James Douglas Smith
Dec. 14, 1927 — Feb. 12, 2001

BEDFORD, Va. — Graveside services for James Douglas Smith, 73, of Roanoke, Va., will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Carder-Tharp Funeral Home in Bedford.

Mr. Smith died Monday in Roanoke.

He was born in Paulling, Iowa, and served as a captain in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a retired professor emeritus from Texas A&M University in the Soil and Crop Sciences Department. He served on the Faculty Senate and was a member of the American Society of Plant Physiologists, the Genetics Society of America and the Botanical Society of America. He received the Margaret Menzel Award in Genetics.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna M. Smith.

Survivors include a son, Scott M. Smith of Appomattox, Va.; a daughter, Shannon L. Smith of Arlington, Va.; a brother, C.W. Smith of Toledo, Ohio; and two sisters, Mary Hanger of Seabrook, Md., and Sandra McKee of Ames, Iowa.

Greta Gayle Pevoteaux Solcher

Greta Gayle Pevoteaux Solcher passed away Saturday, February 17, 2001, from complications of cancer at Methodist Diagnostic Hospital. She was born on December 19, 1935, in Galveston, Texas.

She is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Dean Clarence Solcher; son, Greg Solcher and wife, Deborah, and daughter, Leslie Gayle of Austin; son, Stephen Solcher and wife, Susan, and children, Christian and Jordan of Houston; son, Barry Solcher and wife, Angela, and children, Kathryn Gayle, Sarah, Sam and Anna of College Station; son, Christopher Solcher of Houston; and son, Patrick Solcher and wife, Brook, and daughter, Vaughn of Houston; brother, Wayne Pevoteaux and wife, Brenda, and son, Lee of Spring; sister-in-law, Nancy Duke and husband, Jack, and children, Jessica and Jack of San Antonio; brother-in-law, Bill Solcher and wife, Bettye, and children, Jim Kelly, Cyndi and Mike of Clear Lake; and many loving friends.

Gayle “Nana” touched the lived of many people through her loyal and dedicated teaching of young girls at Duchesne Academy. In lieu of flowers, please cherish the moment and hug someone you love!

Mass will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Road, Houston, at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, February 19, 2001.

Glenda Ellen Magee Bednorz
Aug. 15, 1936 — Feb. 16, 2001

MADISONVILLE — Services for Glenda Ellen Magee Bednorz, 64, of North Zulch are set for 3 p.m. Sunday at the J.M. Day Funeral Home in Madisonville.

The Rev. Dean Ferguson will officiate. Services will also be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Friendship Church in the Blackfoot community with the Rev. Bud Magee officiating. Burial will be in Rock Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Bednorz died Friday at her home.

She lived in North Zulch for 19 years and was a member of the First Baptist Church in North Zulch. She painted oil landscapes.

Survivors include three daughters, Sharon Bednorz of Merit, Katharyn Whitaker of Madisonville and Rhonda Santiago of Yoakum; three sons, Darrell Bednorz of Victoria and Chris Bednorz and Jason Bednorz, both of North Zulch; her former husband, Johnnie Bednorz of Yorktown; three sisters, Rebecca Glen of Bullard, Peggy Smith of Centerville and Florine Mason of Palestine; a brother, Robert Magee of Poynor; 10 grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.

Jessie James Bohler
July 17, 1926 — Feb. 16, 2001

JASPER — Services for Jessie James Bohler, 74, of Hearne are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Forest Oaks Funeral Home in Jasper.

Burial will be in Ferrell Cemetery in Tyler County.

Mr. Bohler died Friday at his home.

He was a native of Jasper County and lived in Hearne for 10 years. He was a resident of Liberty for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Jessie B. Bohler of Hearne; four sons, Richard G. Bohler of Hearne, Frank W. Bohler of Liberty, Larry G. Bohler of Hull and Terry R. Bohler of Bryan; a sister, Merline Roth of Kountze; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Joan Newberry Batten
Sept. 6, 1949 — Feb. 16, 2001

Services for Joan Newberry Batten, 51, of Longview are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

The Rev. Billy Adkisson of Evergreen Freewill Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in College Station Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Batten died Friday in Longview Regional Hospital.

She was born in San Antonio and graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan. She was employed by Neiman Marcus in Longview and was a former member of A&M United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Amanda Batten.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne Batten of Longview; two sons, Doug Batten and Ross Batten, both of Longview; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Bill Williamson of Iola, Linda and Bob Worsham of Ingram, Texas, Jean Veriato of Wimberly, and Nancy Griffin of Kilgore; and a grandchild.

Gwendolyn Winifred ‘Winnie’ Jensen
July 11, 1917 — Feb. 18, 2001

Services for Gwendolyn Winifred “Winnie” Jensen, 83, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

Burial will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the San Saba City Cemetery in San Saba, Texas.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 8 a.m. to the time of the services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Jensen died Sunday in College Station Medical Center.

She was born in Plano, Ill., and lived in Bryan since 1956. She was retired after 20 years of service as a cafeteria manager with the Bryan public schools.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete Jensen.

Survivors include two sons, Jack R. Keeling of Cleburne, Texas, and James W. Keeling of Brenham; two stepsons and a daughter-in-law, Neal Jones and James “Jimmy” and Jan Jones, all of Bryan; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the Brenham State School, 4001 Texas 36 South, Brenham, Texas 77833.

Mary Henry Little
Oct. 28, 1905 — Feb. 17, 2001

Graveside services for Mary Henry Little, 95, of College Station are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the College Station Cemetery.

The Rev. Tim Owens of the First Baptist Church in Bryan will officiate.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.

Mrs. Little died Saturday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

She was born in Bryan and was a lifelong resident of College Station. She was a retired homemaker and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bryan. She was a former member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Texas A&M University Women’s Social Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Survivors include a son, William Henry Little of College Station; a stepdaughter, Martha L. Babenco of El Paso; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Bryan or to a charity of choice.

Norris D. McCorquodale
Jan. 16, 1923 — Feb. 18, 2001

BEDIAS — Graveside services for Norris D. McCorquodale, 78, of Iola are set for 1 p.m. Monday at Lake Grove Cemetery in Iola.

The Rev. Scott Jones of the Iola Missionary Baptist Church will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Bedias.

Mr. McCorquodale died Sunday.

He was born in Grimes County and was a member of the Iola Missionary Baptist Church. He was a charter member of the Iola American Legion Post No. 146.

Survivors include a brother, Davis McCorquodale of Magnolia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
