Merron Van Washington
Jan. 9, 1934 — March 1, 2001

CALDWELL — Services for the Rev. Merron Van Washington, 67, of Caldwell are set for 10 a.m. Monday at the Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell.

The Rev. R.R. Walls will officiate. Burial will be in Roland Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Rev. Washington died Thursday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.

He was born in Burleson County and was retired from the Texas Highway Department District 17. He served as pastor of Holy Temple of Jesus Christ in Rockdale, as assistant pastor of Holy Temple of Jesus Christ in Caldwell and as State Overseer of Holy Temple of Jesus Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Johnnie Washington of Caldwell; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Arthur M. and Opal Lockhart of College Station, Merron V. Washington Jr., Henry B. and Linda Washington and David E. Washington, all of Caldwell; three daughters and a son-in-law, Betty D. Sheppard and Bertha Gee, both of Caldwell, and Ruth A. and Leroy Grove of Fort Worth; two brothers, Booker T. Washington of Caldwell and George Washington III of Waxahachie; four sisters, Della Gray, Helen Green and Hazel Bryant, all of Caldwell, and Ruby Shoels of San Antonio; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Ruby Margurite Neely
Sept. 13, 1915 — March 3, 2001

MADISONVILLE — Services for Ruby Margurite Neely, 85, of Madisonville are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Madisonville.

The Rev. Dick White will officiate. Burial will be in the Madisonville City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at J.M. Day Funeral Home Chapel in Madisonville.

Mrs. Neely died Saturday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

She was born in Seabrook, Texas, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Madisonville. She was a member and served as matron of the Madisonville Order of the Eastern Star.

She was deputy grand matron of District 4, Section 10, as well as district deputy OES for District IV, and several grand chapter committees. She worked as the bookkeeper of the Day Funeral Home, Furniture Store and Insurance companies for 34 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil J. Neely.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Cecil and Lynn Neely of Madisonville; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Madisonville Building Fund.

Mickie Thompson
Nov. 12, 1946 — March 2, 2001

ROCKDALE — Services for Mickie Thompson, 54, of Rockdale are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Rockdale.

The Revs. Paul Kethley of St. John’s United Methodist Church and Carl Hudson of Little River Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

Mrs. Thompson died Friday at her home.

She was born in Washington, D.C., and lived in Rockdale since 1991. She was a licensed vocational nurse, having worked for the rural health clinic through Richards Hospital in Rockdale, the Clinic Pharmacy and Fletcher Financial Services. She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church and sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Matinee Music Club.

Survivors include her husband, Don Thompson of Rockdale; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Edward C. and Kymberlee Thompson of San Antonio, Brian M. Thompson and Greg A. Thompson, both of Rockdale; her father, Elbridge C. Narron Jr. of Hagerstown, Md.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, James and Valerie Narron of Woodbine, Md., John Narron and Richard and Diane Narron, all of Hagerstown, Texas; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Kay and Pete Partidge and Kathy and Jeff Reedy, all of Durham, N.C.

Evelyn Schultz Werchan
Nov. 24, 1940 — March 3, 2001

BRENHAM — Services for Evelyn Schultz Werchan, 60, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham.

The Rev. Erich Schaefer will officiate. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Werchan died Saturday at her home.

She was born in Giddings and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Alfred Werchan Jr. of Bryan; a daughter, Cindy Werchan of Bryan; her parents, Olee and Emma Kaspreak Schultz of Industry, Texas; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Gloria and Nelson Roehling of Brenham; two nephews; and four great-nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley.

Loreta Irene 'Reta' Rich Covington
Aug. 22, 1919 — March 4, 2001

AUSTIN — Services for Loreta Irene “Reta” Rich Covington, 81, of Rockdale are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Louis Catholic Church in Austin.

The Rev. Larry Covington, pastor of St. Louis Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the College Station Cemetery.

A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Cook-Walden Funeral Home in Austin.

Mrs. Covington died Sunday.

She was born in Wharton, Texas, and worked for many years with the extension service and the Farm Labor Program. She helped develop the Farm Labor Program for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. She was a Catholic.

Survivors include her husband, Homer Baker Covington; a daughter and son-in-law, Loretta and Manny Tirado of Jacksonville, Fla.; a son, the Rev. Charles L. Covington of Austin; a sister-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Barbara Youngblood Beasley
BEAUMONT — Services for Barbara Youngblood Beasley, 69, of Beaumont are set for 10 a.m. Thursday at Broussard’s Mortuary in Beaumont.

Burial will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at the College Station Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Beasley died Sunday at her home.

She was a native of Bryan and lived in Beaumont for 23 years. She was retired as a claims adjuster with Texas Employers Insurance Company.

Survivors include two sons, Joe Layne Beasley of Houston and Richard Beasley of Deerpark, Texas; a sister, Gwendolyn Burtis of Kerrville; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Calvin J. Borman
Jan. 7, 1920 — March 4, 2001

BRENHAM — Services for Calvin J. Borman, 81, of Brenham are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham.

The Rev. Bill Derrick will officiate. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham.

Mr. Borman died Sunday in Trinity Medical Center in Brenham.

He was born in the Wesley community of Washington County and served in the U.S. Air Force. He worked 36 years for LCRA and Bluebonnet Electric.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Aline Borman.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Doyle L. and Janet Borman of Waco; two daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie J. and Duane Westfall of Gatesville, Texas, and Darcelle A. and James Jones of Angleton, Texas; a sister, Florence Draehn of Brenham; five sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Elvie Luhn Koronka of Huntsville, Felix Jr. and Ruby Luhn and Bernita Luhn, all of Brenham, Nolan and Laudene Luhn of Coffeyville, Kan., and Florence Luhn of Bellville; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham.

Atria Mae Bay Bowen
Dec. 17, 1935 — March 2, 2001

NAVASOTA — Services for Atria Mae Bay Bowen, 65, of Richards are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Richards.

The Rev. Raymond W. Davis of the First Baptist Church in Richards will officiate. Burial will be in Long Street Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Jones Funeral Home in Navasota and from 10 a.m. to the time of the services Wednesday at the church.

A wake service will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Bowen died Friday in College Station Medical Center.

She was born in Grimes County and was a homemaker. She was a member and usher at the First Baptist Church. She was involved with 4-H, FHA, Richards Founders Day and the Civic Club. She was owner of a ceramic and craft shop.

Survivors include her husband, Jack W. Bowen; a son, Jack Anthony Bowen Sr.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Gwendolyn and Robert Pendleton, Cheryl and Melvin Barry and Karen and Ray Steptoe; three brothers, Albert Bay, Nathaniel Bay and Otis Bay; two sisters, Marie James and Minnie Ferguson; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Helen Maurine Bullock
Oct. 26, 1933 — March 5, 2001

CALDWELL — Graveside services for Helen Maurine Bullock, 67, of College Station are set for 11:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Houston National Cemetery in Houston.

Arrangements are under the direction of Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell.

Mrs. Bullock died Monday at her home.

She was born in Houston and was retired from the wholesale grocery business.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William M. Bullock.

Survivors include two brothers and sisters-in-law, Irving and Jo Chambers of Portland, Ore., and Pete and Kay Chambers of Cleveland, Texas; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Flora Mae and Ray Bokemeyer of College Station, Lillian and Richard Hogan of Caldwell and Mary Walters of Florence, S.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley.

Tom Frank Harrington
Feb. 15, 1921 — March 5, 2001

NORMANGEE — Services for Tom Frank Harrington, 80, of Flynn, Texas, are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Flynn Baptist Church.

Bro. Ross Newton of the Flynn Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Clear Creek Cemetery in Leon County.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Cozart Funeral Home in Normangee.

Mr. Harrington died Monday in Mexia, Texas.

He was born in the Ten Mile community of Madison County and was retired as a pipefitter for Local Union 211. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and was a member of the Flynn Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Harrington.

Survivors include three sons and a daughter-in-law, Donald and Beth Harrington of Kingwood, Texas, Mike Harrington of Houston and Kenneth Harrington of Huntsville; two brothers, James Harrington and Lee Bob Harrington, both of Pasadena, Texas; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary Edna Jones of Pasadena, Ella Mae Louqie of Lutcher, La., and Patricia and Billy Brown of Houston; and two grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clear Creek Cemetery.

Silas 'Curly' Hennesey
March 24, 1928 — March 4, 2001

JEWETT — Graveside services for Silas “Curly” Hennesey, 72, of Jewett are set for 3 p.m. Tuesday at Russell Cemetery near Jewett.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ricks Funeral Home in Jewett.

Mr. Hennesey died Sunday at his home.

He was born in Cuero, Texas, and lived in Jewett for more than 40 years. He was a painter.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Durant Hennesey of Jewett; three daughters and a son-in-law, Carolyn E. Burns of Pasadena, Texas, Diane and Travis Williams of Jewett, and Silisa Hennesey of Houston; a brother, Joe C. Hennesey of Jewett; three grandsons; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
