Paul O. Jones
June 7, 1922 — March 11, 2001

MADISONVILLE — Services for Paul O. Jones, 78, of Midway are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Madisonville Funeral Home in Madisonville.

Bros. Don Grisby and David Grisby will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Houston National Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Jones died Sunday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

He was born in Paris, Texas, and lived in Midway for 10 years. He formerly lived in Houston and was superintendent of crane operations for the Port of Houston Authority. He was a gospel singer and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Jones of Midway; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul Jr. “Bubba” and Dawn Jones of Houston; three brothers, Frank Jones of Humble, Wayne Jones of Pasadena and Jimmie Jones of Escondido, Calif.; four sisters, Helen Burchett of Pasadena, Billie Hill, Bobbie Macey and Omega McCracken, all of Humble; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to the United Pentecostal Church in Madisonville.

Jimmy Howard Kirby
Oct. 22, 1936 — March 11, 2001

BEDIAS — Graveside services for Jimmy Howard Kirby, 64, of Bedias are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Burial will be with full military honors.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Bedias.

Mr. Kirby died Sunday.

He was born in Sevier County, Tenn.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Gayle Parsons Kirby of Bedias; a son, John Edward Kirby; a daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Kenny Brock of Burleson; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Billie and Joe Barnes, Sylvia and Earl Jones and Joyce and Mike Cobb, all of Knoxville, Tenn.; and five grandchildren.

Rosia Lee Langston
Sept. 21, 1910 — March 10, 2001

Services for Rosia Lee Langston, 90, of Bryan are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday in Ruby’s Chapel of Jones-Washington Mortuary in Bryan.

The Rev. Bennie Mosley will officiate. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Langston died Saturday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

She was born in Robertson County and was a lifelong resident of Bryan. She was a retired cook and was a Baptist.

Survivors include her husband, Vestin Langston Sr. of Bryan; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Eddie Lee and Mable Langston of Bryan, Odell Langston of Phoenix, Ariz., and Vestin Langston Jr. of Wichita Falls.

Jennie Beatrice Lummus
April 13, 1907 — March 10, 2001

JEWETT — Graveside services for Jennie Beatrice Lummus, 93, formerly of Jewett are set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery in Leon County.

Bro. Woody Jackson will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ricks Funeral Home in Jewett.

Mrs. Lummus died Saturday in Midland.

She was born in Leon County. She was a teacher in Leon County before her marriage and returned to teaching during World War II. She taught 18 years in Ennis, Maypearl, Sterret and Waxahachie. She also taught Sunday school at South Prong Baptist Church in Waxahachie for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Roger Lummus.

Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Taylor; a son and daughter-in-law, Donnie and Martha Lummus; a sister, Verlon Lewis; a brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Dora Mae Craddock; five sisters-in-law, Melissa Craddock, Melba Lummus, Cliffair Lummus, Agnes Lummus and Cora Daughtry; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Memorials may be made to Children’s Fund, South Prong Baptist Church, P.O. Box 981, Waxahachie, Texas 75168, or Hospice House of Home Hospice, 903 N. Sam Houston, Odessa, Texas 79761.

Marvin Eugene Pickett
May 1, 1945 — March 11, 2001

CALDWELL — Services for Marvin Eugene Pickett, 55, of Somerville are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell.

The Rev. Larry Flanary will officiate. Burial will be in Caldwell Masonic Cemetery.

Mr. Pickett died Sunday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.

He was born in Brady and was a field supervisor for Sage Energy Company. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietname War.

Survivors include his wife, Minnie Pickett of Somerville; his mother, Ruby Hatten of Mission; a son, Michael Eugene Pickett of Somerville; a step-son, Jimmy Don Walden of Ardmore, Okla.; a daughter, Christine Tally of Ontario, Canada; a step-daughter, Michelle Walden of Somerville; two brothers, Charles David Hatten of Grape Creek and Auby Leroy Hatten of Mertzon; three sisters, Ruby Bowles of Eastland, Joyce Patterson of Mission and Polly Pipkin of Olden; and 12 grandchildren.

Alvin A.. Price
Oct. 8, 1917 — March 11, 2001

Services for Dr. Alvin A. Price, 83, of College Station are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Bryan.

The Rev. Bill Wiman of the First Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the College Station Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Chapel College Station.

Dr. Price died Sunday at his home.

He was born in Lingleville and lived in College Station for over 50 years. He received his B.S. and D.V.M. from Texas A&M University. He was assistant professor of anatomy, director of biomedical science and dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University. He served in World War II and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bryan.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Price.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Bob A. and Sandy Price of College Station; a daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Bob Agee of Orlando, Fla.; a brother and sister-in-law, E.M. and Helen Price of Mineral Wells; a sister, Wilma Riley of Dumas; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley, 205 East 29th Street, Bryan, Texas 77803, or the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 200 South Texas Ave.; Bryan, Texas 77802.

Robert Charles Standridge
Oct. 31, 1941 — March 10, 2001

MENA, Ark. — Services for Robert Charles Standridge, 59, of Bryan and formerly of Mena are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home Chapel in Mena.

The Rev. Chad Hill will officiate. Burial will be in Lower Big Fork Cemetery.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Eubank Funeral Home in Mabank, Texas.

Mr. Standridge died Saturday.

He was born in Mena and served in the U.S. Air Force. He was an office supply store owner and was a Methodist.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Kay Standridge of College Station; his mother, Zazel Standridge of Mena; and two brothers, Gene Standridge of Gurdon, Ark., and Gary Standridge of Van Buren, Ark.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Brazos Valley Hospice of the American Lung Association.

Mary Verde
April 4, 1908 — March 11, 2001

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Services for Mary Verde, 92, of Kansas City are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gabriel Archangel Catholic Church in Kansas City.

Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Passantino Bros. Funeral Home in Kansas City.

Mrs. Verde died Sunday in North Kansas City Hospital.

She was born in Kansas City and was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Gabriel Parish, where she was past-president of the Altar Society. A scholarship was established in her honor by the St. Gabriel PTE in honor of her work with the parish spaghetti dinners. She was also a member and past regent of the Daughters of Isabella No. 881. She was the recipient of the Bishop’s Recognition Award and the St. Pius X Sartonian Award.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nick Verde.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Julian and Cheryl Verde of St. Louis, Mo.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and Fred Fontana of Bryan and Leonore and Lawrence Messina of Kansas City; a sister, Katie Fontana of Kansas City; 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; a nephew; and two nieces.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Gabriel Church, the Mary Verde Scholarship Fund at St. Gabriel School or St. Pius X High School.

Obert Lamar Barnett
May 18, 1922 — March 13, 2001

HEARNE — Graveside services for Obert Lamar Barnett, 78, of Hearne are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near Franklin.

Bro. Howard Vann will officiate. Masonic burial rites will be at the cemetery .

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Heartfield Funeral Home in Hearne.

Mr. Barnett died Tuesday in the Marlin Veteran’s Administration Hospital.

He was born in Wheelock and was a longtime resident of Hearne. He worked for the Pacific Fruit Express Railroad in Hearne and was a Baptist. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was a member and past master of the Golden Rule Lodge No. 361 AF&AM in Hearne.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Barnett of Hearne; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Sharon Barnett of Waxahachie; a daughter, Shirley Charlton of Hearne; a brother, James Barnett of Houston; a sister, Winona King of Scottsdale, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Annie Gurka
July 25, 1909 — March 12, 2001

BRENHAM — Services for Annie Gurka, 91, of Chappell Hill are set for 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Chappell Hill.

The Rev. Gene Shepard will officiate.

A rosary will be recited by the Altar-Rosary Society at 7 p.m. Wednesday and an additional rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Gene Shepard at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham.

Mrs. Gurka died Monday in a Brenham nursing home.

She was born in Chappell Hill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Gurka.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Joe E. and Bebe Gurka of Brenham; a daughter, Clara Gurka of Chappell Hill; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
