Arthur D. ‘Art’ Simmons
April 25, 1929 — March 16, 2001

ROCKDALE — Graveside services for Arthur D. “Art” Simmons, 71, of Lampasas are set for 11 a.m. Monday at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rockdale.

Arrangements are under the direction of Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

Mr. Simmons died Friday in the Metroplex Hospital in Killeen.

He was born in Sharp, Texas, and lived in Lampasas since 1996. He was a truck driver for 50 years, hauling heavy equipment and gravel while building Interstate 35. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Survivors include his companion, Gaynell Edmundson of Lampasas; two sons and daughters-in-law, Billy and Vickie Simmons of Liberty Hill, Texas, and Ronny and Kathy Simmons of Bartlett, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Theresa and Kevin Tuel of Bartlett; a brother and sister-in-law, Harvey and Doris Simmons of Austin; and 10 grandchildren.

Johnnie Ward
Oct. 28, 1922 — March 18, 2001

Services for Johnnie Ward, 78, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

Bob Wolfert of Central Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be in Lake Grove Cemetery in Grimes County.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 8 a.m. to the time of the services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ward died Sunday in Shady Oaks Assisted Living Center.

She was born in Valley Mills, Texas, and lived in Bryan for 30 years. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin L. Ward; and a daughter, Cynthia Sue Dodgen.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Bubba and Virginia Ward of College Station, Paul and Vicki Ward and Mike and Suzy Ward, all of Bryan; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Sharon Dyer, Connie and Carl Blackburn and Janet and Bill Roark, all of Montgomery, Sheila Ward of New Waverly, Texas, and Tevyan and Ed Whorton of Navasota; a brother, Dempsay L. Phillips of Bryan; a sister, Dorothy Jean Stroope of Abilene; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Alvin W. Ginzel
Aug. 11, 1917 — March 18, 2001

Services for Alvin W. Ginzel, 83, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

The Rev. Henry Beseda of the Caldwell Brethren Church will officiate. Burial will be in Rest-Ever Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 a.m. to the time of the services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Ginzel died Sunday at his home.

He was born in Caldwell and lived in Bryan since 1951. He spent his adult years as a farmer, businessman and 19 years as a police officer with the Bryan Police Department. He spent the last nine years as a weekend information desk representative at St. Joseph Regional Health Center. He was a member of the Caldwell Brethren Church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha M. Ginzel.

Survivors include his wife, LaVelle Ginzel of Bryan; two sons and daughters-in-law, Alwilliam and Martha Ginzel of Bryan and Daniel and Sherry Ginzel of College Station; a step-son and daughter-in-law, Daryl and Dionne Massey of Bryan; a brother, Leroy Ginzel of Baytown; and three grandchildren.

Norman S. Grabo
April 21, 1930 — March 14, 2001

Norman S. Grabo, 70, of Greeley, Colo., died Wednesday in Greeley.

He was born in Chicago, Ill., and was a former Distinguished Professor at Texas A&M University. He received his master’s and Ph.D. from UCLA and taught in the English department at Michigan State University, the University of California at Berkeley, Texas A&M University and the University of Tulsa, where he was Chapman Professor of English, and also taught the Great Books program at St. John’s College in Santa Fe, N.M., and retired in Greeley.

His booksinclude Edward Taylor, Edward Taylor’s Christographia, Edward Taylor’s Treatise Concerning the Lord’s Supper and The Coincidental Art of Charles Brockden Brown. He also edited, alone or with others, American Thought and Writing, American Poetry and Prose and Edgar Huntly. At the time of his death, he had completed an unpublished history of Colonial American Literature called “American Literary Design, 1520 - 1820.”

Survivors include a son, Scott D. Grabo of Annandale, Va.; a daughter, Carrie D. Grabo of Vienna, Va.; and four grandchildren.

Jerry Lee Guinn Jr.
Dec. 27, 1964 — March 16, 2001

Memorial services for Jerry Lee Guinn Jr., 36, of Houston are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Bryan.

The Rev. C.W. Stewart of Mt. Olive Baptist Church will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Jones-Washington Mortuary in Bryan.

Mr. Guinn died Friday in Houston.

He was born in Electra, Texas, and worked for Fuddrucker’s restaurants. He was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

Survivors include his mother and step-father, Shirley Ann and Homer Rice of Bryan; his father, Jerry Guinn Sr. of Buffalo; two step-brothers, Harold Thompson Rice of Houston and Dominic Rice of Bryan; two sisters, Shirley Gene Guinn of Oxnard, Calif., and Ardelia Lashunn Williams of Dallas; and his grandmother, Pearlie Mae Robinson of Nashville, Tenn.

Edith Winona Murphy
Nov. 21, 1926 — March 17, 2001

Services for Edith Winona Murphy, 74, of Calvert are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sneed Memorial Methodist Church in Calvert.

The Rev. James Green of Sneed Memorial Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan and from 1 p.m. to the time of the services Wednesday at the church.

Mrs. Murphy died Saturday at her home.

She was born in Wellborn and lived in Calvert since 1980. She was a member of Sneed Memorial Methodist Church and Order of the Eastern Star Franklin Chapter No. 311. She was retired as a secretary with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Diane Whittemore.

Survivors include her husband, Glenn Murphy of Calvert; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Mona Shoemate of Redrock; a son-in-law, Joe C. Whittemore of Austin; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

William Theodore ‘Ted’ Hascall
Dec. 24, 1932 — March 18, 2001

WICHITA, Kan. — Private memorial services for William Theodore “Ted” Hascall, 68, of Wichita have been held.

Arrangements were under the direction of Downing & Lahey Mortuary in Wichita.

Mr. Hascall died Sunday.

He was born in Riverside, Calif., and formerly lived in College Station. He served as a career officer in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. As a pilot, he completed more than 100 combat missions in fighter aircraft in Vietnam. His awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross with Clusters, the Bronze Star and Air Medal with Clusters. He received two degrees in Industrial Engineering and a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Texas A&M University and taught on the faculty at Texas A&M and Wichita State University. Following his academic career, he established a real estate appraisal consulting firm in Wichita, Ted Hascall Associates.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Hascall.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Hascall; two daughters, Elizabeth Gomez of Wichita and Susan McKinney of Overland Park, Kan.; a brother, Alva Hascall of Justin, Texas; two granddaughters; and a step-grandson.

Memorials may be made to scholarships established with Butler County Community College in El Dorado, Kan., or the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets in College Station.

Lois Ann Winkelmann
July 4, 1945 — March 18, 2001

BRENHAM — Services for Lois Ann Winkelmann, 55, of Brenham are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church of Zionsville.

The Rev. Virgil Pecht will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery .

Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham.

Miss Winkelmann died Sunday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.

She was born in Brenham.

Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Dean and Sandy Winkelmann of Brenham; two nieces; two aunts; and numerous other relatives.

Memorials may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Myrtle Laura Anna Ponfick Guelker
March 30, 1912 — March 19, 2001

BURTON — Services for Myrtle Laura Anna Ponfick Guelker, 88, of Burton are set for 4 p.m. Wednesday at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Burton. The Rev. Glen Schoeneberg will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery .

Arrangements are under the direction of Foehner Funeral Home in Burton.

Mrs. Guelker died Monday in Bluebonnet Hills Care Center in Brenham.

She was born in Washington County and attended Sandtown and Carmine schools. Mrs. Guelker was a homemaker. She was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, the Burton Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, Burton American Legion Auxiliary and Burton Cotton Gin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry L. Guelker.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Henry L. and Jerry Guelker of Burton; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Wilbert Rogas of Brenham; a brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Dorothy Ponfick of Burton; her sister, Peggy Ponfick of Brenham; a son-in-law, Harold Kelm of Burton; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the St. John’s United Church of Christ in Burton.

Marilyn Fay Lockie
Dec. 7, 1939 — March 19, 2001

Services for Marilyn Fay Lockie, 61, of College Station are set for 10 a.m. Thursday at Christ United Methodist Church in College Station. The Rev. Jerry House will officiate. Burial will be in the Veterans National Cemetery in Houston.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home and from 9 a.m. to service time Thursday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station.

Mrs. Lockie died Monday at her home in College Station.

She was born in Van Wert, Ohio. She was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in College Station. Mrs. Lockie was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Charles “Chuck” Lockie of College Station; a son and daughter-in-law, Dwight Jay and Debra Lockie of Grover Hill, Ohio; a daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Mike Kriger of College Station; her mother, Ruth Reed, a brother, Doug Reed and a sister, Carolyn Pruden, all of Grover Hill; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Brazos Valley.

Mike C. Ybarra
Sept. 29, 1933 — March 20, 2001

NAVASOTA — Services for Mike C. Ybarra, 67, of Navasota are set for 10 a.m. Thursday at Christ Our Light Catholic Church in Navasota. The Rev. Paul Felix will officiate. Graveside service will be at 4 p.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in New Braunfels.

A rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Mr. Ybarra died Tuesday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.

He was born in New Braunfels. He was a fork lift operator for Interstate and a member of the Christ Our Light Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ramona M. Ybarra of Navasota; a son, Mike Ybarra, Jr. of Navasota; five daughters and two sons-in-law, Connie and Jeff Cranford of Navasota, Sylvia and Eric Raherimanjato of Navasota, Caroline Espinoza of College Station and Wendy and Laura Ybarra, both of Navasota; three brothers, Frank, Pete and Augustine; five sisters, Frances, Lucy, Josie, Mary Jane and Helen; nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
